Board Chair:ALEX WASHINGTONDear Friends,

to say that the past twelve months have been challenging for Chicago’s public school teachers and students would be an understatement. School closings, policy changes, and teacher movement created uncertainty for everyone and CFe was not immune to the impact. However, the commitment to our mission never wavered and our staff did a fantastic job of ensuring the effective implementation our programs. Importantly, thank you to all of our stakeholders (donors, volunteers, and partners) for your patience and cooperation throughout the year.

CFe’s reach continues to grow. In 2013, we worked with 319 Chicago public Schools (a 24% increase over the prior year). 274 volunteers evaluated grant applications, visited schools, and supported award-winning teachers (a 9% increase over the prior year). our volunteers are the life-blood of the organization and we continue to seek new and innovative ways to expand these relationships. a great example was the formation of a CFe associate Committee. Composed of a core group of young, energetic professionals, the aC raised more than $25,000 at the 1st annual WhirlyBall tournament for teachers and introduced approximately 40 new donors to CFe.

In transitioning into this next term as CFe board chair, I thank Mary Beth Canfi eld for her tremendous leadership and continued service. along with Brian Duwe (our new vice chair), I look forward to building upon the solid foundation and positive momentum that we enjoy. It is an honor to work with all of you.

Sincerely,alex WashingtonBoard Chairperson

Teacher of the Year:CARA BUCCIARELLIDear Friends,

When I became a founding teacher at a new CpS school six years ago, building a K-8 Spanish language curriculum seemed a daunting task. thankfully, CFe was one of the fi rst organizations I discovered and the Small Grant became the fi rst of many grants for which I would apply. over the past several years, the four Small Grants I received have funded project-based thematic units with topics as diverse as nutrition, textiles, prepositions, and music from around the Spanish-speaking world. My recent Fund for teachers fellowship experience inspired me to integrate countries of study, one per grade level, into our curriculum, thereby ensuring that my students engage in contextualized, culturally-rich language study.

CFe’s “for teachers, by teachers” philosophy inspires me to share what I have implemented in my classroom through three Study Group Coach Grants and presentations at two Workshops. these rewarding experiences have brought together teachers from across the city and from a variety of subject areas. CFe has developed me as a teacher-leader, and with that foundation I pursued a teach plus fellowship, led professional development workshops for CpS, and am a member of advance Illinois’ educator advisory Council.

thank you to CFe for continuing to support me in my teaching career and for recognizing me as the 2012 Debby Jannotta and Shirley Jaffee teacher of the Year. I am honored to serve on CFe’s Board of Directors and look forward to working with the organization for years to come.

Sincerely,Cara BucciarelliK-8 Spanish teacherlaSalle II Magnet School

STUDY GROUP PROGRAM

Chicago Foundation for education Study Groups bring together preK-8th grade CpS educators (team Members) to learn effective teaching methods from their peers (Coaches). Coaches are identifi ed each spring, and then a catalog of Study Group offerings is shared with teachers across the district. potential team Members review the catalog and rank their top choices.

once team Members have been selected, their Coaches facilitate a minimum of 15 hours of cooperative learning. During meetings, team Members share strategies, support each other through implementation, and adapt teaching methods for optimal effi cacy across classrooms. peer feedback and refl ection on progress are hallmarks of the Study Group process. Collaboration is essential, allowing teachers to share suggestions and form a network of professionals working toward similar goals.

this year, CFe awarded 260 teachers the opportunity to participate in 35 Study Groups led by 39 teachers. Strategies implemented by Study Groups included: Common Core and the Interactive Science Classroom; Easy as Pi: Hands-On Measurement Activities; and Helping Scholars fi nd the Joy in Reading and Books.

Study Group TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHTrosa ramirez, a 4th grade teacher at Seward eS, was interested in how the lesson Study teaching methodology could help her students meet the Common Core Standards. In erendira’s group, rosa learned from and collaborated with her peers. She “appreciates how CFe team Members relate their personal experiences to offer suggestions on how to modify teaching practices.”

Study Group COACH SPOTLIGHTerendira alcantara, a 3rd grade teacher at Chavez eS in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, utilized the lesson Study teaching approach to engage her students in active learning, higher-order thinking, and refl ective questioning. She had the opportunity to share her success with colleagues and district leaders, but was also interested in helping other teachers learn about this powerful methodology. CFe Study Groups provided a forum for her to mentor others as they implemented lesson Study in their own classrooms.

SMALL GRANT PROGRAM

Chicago Foundation for education Small Grants fund the implementation of classroom and school-wide curricular projects that respond to the specifi c academic, social, and emotional needs of a student population. Grants of up to $600 are available to fund books, supplies, materials, fi eld trips, or any other items that will deepen student engagement and promote active learning. each application is evaluated by a minimum of three CFe volunteers who use a common rubric to assess how the teachers determined student needs.

last fall, CFe made 281 awards to 323 pre-K through 8th Grade CpS teachers. these Small Grant recipients utilized their awards to reach 12,993 students with projects such as Math Workstations in the Primary Classroom, Bringing the Lab Back into Science, and Character Studies though Newbery Award Books. after implementing their projects, teachers had the opportunity to disseminate their ideas by presenting at CFE’s Annual Teachers as Leaders and Learners Workshop and participating in CFe’s Study Group Coach program.

Small GrantTEACHER SPOTLIGHTDemetrius Sajous-Brady, a 3rd grade teacher at lincoln eS, used his CFe Small Grant funds to purchase plant seeds and insect larvae for a unit on natural habitats. over the course of the semester, his students observed and documented the relationships among organisms. Students were responsible for raising their plants and for providing food, water, and shelter to their insects. through this hands-on experience, students mastered both state and national science standards.

ACTION RESEARCH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

action research is a systematic process that teachers use to analyze the effectiveness of their instruction through data collection, evaluation, and refl ection. Chicago Foundation for education’s action research leadership Institute (arlI) has been hailed by grant winners as “the best professional development” experience they have ever had.

over the course of a school year, arlI Fellows collect data in their classrooms, examine the effi cacy of specifi c instructional strategies, document student achievement, and refl ect upon their practice. the program includes more than 45 hours of collaborative learning facilitated by a university advisor and supported by two Senior Fellows. the research fi ndings and resulting policy recommendations of a teacher’s inquiry have the potential to impact a classroom, school, or an entire district.

100%“strongly agreed” or “agreed”

that they continue to use action research to inform

their teaching

100% “strongly agreed” or “agreed” that

the process made them a more refl ective and effective teacher

100%“strongly agreed” or “agreed”

that the fellowship increased their enthusiasm for teaching

Action Research FELLOW SPOTLIGHT Georgia anne Moore, a 3rd grade teacher at Sumner Math & Science eS in West Garfi eld park, was awarded an arlI fellowship to research inquiry-based learning in her classroom. She analyzed student work samples, interviewed students directly and with exit slips, and refl ected on their progress in her teacher journal. She found that when her students worked collaboratively instead of competitively, they were more likely to succeed. By the end of the year, all of her students improved their standardized test scores and 92% “met or exceeded” their math goals.

FUND FOR TEACHERS PROGRAM

Chicago Foundation for education Fund for teachers Fellowships honor Chicago’s most talented teachers by providing them with powerful opportunities for professional renewal and growth, while simultaneously allowing them the chance to work towards increasing academic achievement, global awareness, and cultural sensitivity in students. at the beginning of 2013, in partnership with the national Fund for teachers organization, CFe awarded 31 Fund for teachers Fellowships to 39 Chicago public School teachers.

teachers with three or more years of classroom experience submitted proposals detailing how a Fellowship would improve their instruction and how the skills garnered during this experience would ultimately benefi t their students, curricula, and school environment. 2013 Fellow experiences included: attending a “Magic of electrons” summer institute and developing a middle-school engineering curriculum; collaborating with world-renowned ugandan educators to learn ways of empowering students to express their fears and struggles through issue-based performance; and tracing the steps of uS soldiers in World War II to enhance american History curriculum.

100%of Fellows “strongly agreed” or

“agreed” that their FFT Fellowship experience positively impacted

their professional growth

100% “strongly agreed” or

“agreed” that their Fellowship experience resulted in the use

of new strategies that motivate students to learn

100%“strongly agreed” or “agreed”

that their Fellowship experience allowed me to be more innovative in my

approach to teaching

Fund for TeachersFELLOW SPOTLIGHTemily porter, a literacy and technology teacher at Smyser eS in the portage park neighborhood, earned a FFt Fellowship to attend workshops at the German Museum of Cinema and television in Berlin. She studied technology trends and developed lesson plans to engage students across grade levels. She then taught her students to incorporate interviews and other primary sources into reports about their family history. ultimately, her students created digital archives of their process.

CITYWIDE INFLUENCE

CHARACTER EDUCATION INITIATIVEChicago Foundation for education has always recognized the importance of social and emotional learning as an integral part of a student’s education. CFe encourages teachers who cultivate students’ intrinsic motivation to:

• Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills

• Strengthen self-esteem and increase their respect for others

• understand the consequences of their decisions and actions

• advance into productive, responsible citizens of their classroom, school, and community

CFe currently offers $100 and $200 Character education Bonuses to our Small Grant, Study Group Coach Grant, and action research Fellowship applicants. More than 25% of these grant winners apply for and earn Bonuses to support their integration of lessons that promote core character values.

WORKSHOPCFe hosted its 24th Annual Teachers as Leaders and Learners Workshop on September 30, 2012. the conference featured 65 CFe teacher-presenters, all of whom showcased their grant-winning curricular projects, instructional strategies, and action research fi ndings. nearly 400 teachers participated in this Saturday morning event and were greeted by an engaging Keynote address from Donald Hyun Kiolbassa, 2008 World Games Gold Medalist, author, and CpS graduate. CFe’s Workshop also offered a resource Fair, grantwriting assistance, and a “Meet and Greet” networking session at the end of the day.

OUTREACHChicago Foundation for education is proud to work with teachers across the entire CpS district, and to recognize our 319 partners on the next page. We reach several thousand educators via our monthly e-newsletter and continue to rely on our volunteers and teacher liaisons to connect on school grounds. CFe has also recently expanded social media efforts. By sharing resources and creating an open dialog with teachers online, we have seen an increase in the number of grant applications across our programs. to stay connected, “like” Chicago Foundation for education on Facebook and “follow” CFe on twitter @CFegrants.
