Dear Parents,

As we end Week 5 we are continuing to receive calls

for enrolment tours. Many of these are for grade levels

right across the school. Given that we are currently

trying to formulate grade structures, class sizes and

staffing needs for 2014, we need to firm up enrolment

numbers.

Therefore, we ask any families intending to leave our

school, to please notify the office staff in writing as

soon as possible.

Likewise, if you know of family or friends who are

looking to enrol their children at our school, we ask

that they call the office to arrange a tour promptly to

avoid any possibility of disappointment.

School Gates

We wish to advise all parents that the school gates will

be opened after 2:45pm.

Concerns were raised by many staff members about the

gates being opened too early. Given that many students

are still moving around the school for such things as

going to the toilet, running errands or visiting a

specialist class, it’s not safe to have all gates open for

anybody to wander freely in and out of our school

grounds.

Parking

This is a reminder that we ask all members of our

school community to avoid parking in front of the

big blue skip bin. We have been informed that the

rubbish truck will not enter our school grounds if a car

is stopped in front of the skip bin.

Also, all parents are reminded to avoid using the staff

car park.

Christmas Raffle

Our Christmas raffle is on again. Students were given

the raffle tickets to take home last week.

Many donations that we could use to place in hampers

for prizes have begun coming in. We would really

appreciate parents donating items such as food, toys or

Christmas decorations. All donations can be dropped in

the office area.

Grade 4 Camp

On Monday, the grade 4 students depart for a 3 day

camp to Phillip Island. Having attended this camp

before, I can assure you that the students are in for a

very exciting time completing various outdoor

challenges, visiting the Penguin Parade and spending

time with their friends.

fun night. I have seen many grades filming their Oscar

So don’t forget to pack your picnic rugs and the jaffas.

Student of the Week

Buy a Poppy for Remembrance

Our school has once again been supporting our local

RSL with students from grades 5 and 6 selling a range

of Poppy products to our school students. Prices range

from $1 to $5. There is also a box of Poppies at the

front office for parents to purchase from.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is commemorated on the 11th of

November every year.

It recalls the end of World War 1 on

that date in 1918, were we

remember the Air Force, Navy and

Australian Army, who served their

country with pride and fear.

We also remember those who fought in World War 2,

the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the war in

Afghanistan.

The Red Poppy came into play, when soldiers saw that

they were growing wild on the battlefields of France. It

reminded them of the wounded soldiers and those

who bless their souls, died during the bloodbath of

war.

As always, our school will hold our Annual

Remembrance Day Ceremony on Monday 11th

November 2013 in the Hall.

Grade Prep, 1 & 2 will be at 10:30am

Grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 will be at 10:45am

We hope to see everyone wearing their Poppy badges

and wristbands during the assembly.

CSIRO

On Thursday 31st October 2013, all the grade 4s had a

visit from a scientist named Gemma who works for a

place called CSIRO which stands for:

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research

Organization.

She showed us different experiments like;

Balancing birds,

A train that either rolls or floats,

A bridge that can stand without a back

support and many more.

My favourite part was when someone had to sit on a

box full of over 1,000 nails. Also, at the end, Gemma

swung her arm while holding a bucket full of water all

the way around and it did not spill.

It was a lot of fun and I think it was the best incursion

ever.

Inter School Sports – Newcombe

On the 25th of October two Newcombe teams

from TLPS played two matches against

Overnewton Primary School. Although

Overnewton won every game, they were good

games. The girls’ team was close to winning but

sadly lost. Taylors Lakes Primary School was

the school which tried really hard to win

because it was their first match. After the

matches both schools shook hands and said

things like, “Good game.” Also after the game both teams had one child

giving a speech. One of the hilarious highlights

was when Deacon, our speech giver, said during

his speech, “Over Tooten”. Everyone from TLPS

laughed their heads off. No-one will ever

forget that moment because of Deacon.

By Chloe Parsons 5VR

First day, first try, first loss

We started off the day energetic and fresh,

looking forward for some serious tackling! Didn’t

take too long before the bus arrived so soon we

were off.

On arriving to Overnewton, the girls’ speed ball

team looked out the window trying to spot the

opposing speed ball team…but no luck.

The girls’ speed ball team was so energetic that

for some reason we began to perform gymnastics!

But it wasn’t long before we stopped and started

watching the boys’ match so we knew what we

were up against.

Within what seemed like an hour, next up was the

girls’ speed ball team. However just when we

started getting up Mr. Rayner told us the news

that made us even more energetic! It turned out

that there was only one girl participating in their

mixed team which meant our GIRLS’ speed ball

team had to play against the Overnewton BOYS’

speed ball team (plus one girl)!

Being confident & strong, we began our match.

The Taylors Lakes speed ball team shot one goal

while the Overnewton team shot two goals.

Leaving, with our heads held high, we were proud

that we only lost by one goal … plus we played

against boys!

European Handball

On the 25/10/13 the European handball team went to Overnewton, Taylors Lakes. At the start they couldn’t fit a boys and a girls’ team so we had a full mixed team with a lot of rotations. First on was myself, Mitchell, Akashdeep, Natalie, Alessia and Ben. The game started really well. In the first game it was 7-0 our way, the second game was 6-0 our way then the last game was 6-0 our way so overall we got a score of 19-0, a tremendous win. We were so happy to win the first game. This team of European Handballers is kicking off a great season. It is totally worthwhile. By Flynn H 5VR

Inter-school Sports!

Today the Newcombe team played their first

match. We were all very excited. When we

got to Overnewton the girls and mixed team

walked enthusiastically to the Newcombe

court. There, we met the Overnewton teams.

The T.L.P.S mixed team went first. Even though

our school lost our team spirit kept going. Our

girls’ team lost too but we still had our heads

held high.

Next round the coach of the other team

gave us a few tips so we used them and did

better. After the rounds we shook hands then

began to cheer a little a hip, hip, hooray!

Although the Overnewton grade 5s have

been playing interschool sports since January,

I thought we did a pretty good job.
