CHIDEOCK CHATTERS … I started ‘Chideock Chatters’ a while ago for women to get together, have a chat, a glass of wine and meet others. Whilst there are lots of groups meeting during the day, there wasn’t anything for working ladies or ladies who have other commitments in the day time. So we meet in the evenings! The group has been a success and we have a ‘get together’ in one of the local pubs or the village hall every 6 weeks or so.

If you would like to join in and come to a ‘get together’, please email or phone me and I will put you on the mailing list. [email protected] tel no. 01297 489996

Some are quite rare and we are very grateful to Tony and Pam Fuller who negotiated with the former owner to offer the collection to the Society. We had another wonderful collection of photos brought in that afternoon by the Symes family ,who have very kindly allowed them to be put on a disc so we can share them with the village. A35 Bypass. Six residents have come forward to form a Working Group. If anyone else is interested in being involved please contact the Clerk who will put you in touch with the group. Dorset Association of Town and Parish Councils AGM. The Dorset Association of Parish & Town Councils’ Annual General Meeting on 5th November was attended by Councillors Geraghty and Campion with Parish Clerk Sal Robinson. This was an opportunity to meet councillors from across Dorset, to exchange ideas and experience and to vote on matters as a county-wide body. Chideock Parish Council’s motion that Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty be Statutory Consultees in Planning Applications was passed by 42 votes to 2. The motion for a 20 mph speed limit on single track highways with no footway/pavement was defeated – after some debate, centred on the speed limit proposed - by 32 votes to 18. There was general approval for some action, however, and this issue will continue to be discussed. Any views/questions on these matters can be forwarded to the Clerk at [email protected] Poaching. PSCO Ash, Dorset Police, has reported concerns from the gamekeeper at Chideock Manor regarding poaching in the North Chideock area. Shots have been heard, vehicles heard making off at speed when approached, and marbles/lead shot located. Police are increasing late patrols in the area, and ask the public to report any suspicious activity immediately, so that we can challenge those responsible can be challenged and any offences dealt with. Come and Have Your Say at a Parish Council Meeting. The Parish Council exists to represent YOU, the residents of Chideock, Seatown and most of North Chideock, and is funded by a small part of the Council Tax which you all pay. There is a “Democratic Period” at every meeting. So if you have got something on your mind which you think the Parish Council should know about and / or do something about, then come along and tell councillors about it. Parish Councils have few powers, but they can, and do, try to get those who do have the powers to do what needs to be done. During the winter Chideock Parish Council is meeting at 10:00 am on the last Tuesday of the month but the meetings will be at 7 pm when the lighter evenings are with us again. There is no meeting in August or December. Obscured Road Signs. A reminder that it is the responsibility of the owner or occupier of land or property to ensure that vegetation growing on their land does not obscure any road traffic sign.

Clearing vegetation near a road, ditch, brook or river. Please ensure that any bushes / trees / brambles etc. overhanging pavements / footpaths are cut back to allow pedestrians to safely walk along without going onto the highway to avoid this vegetation (This is particularly necessary on narrow lanes without footways.) Also, please make sure that, when strimming banks or pruning hedges / trees close to a public highway, ditch, brook or river, all detritus is removed and not allowed to block up drains, gullies and culverts or fall into the ditch, brook or river. Clear a Drain! When you are out walking on any of the side roads and you see a drain blocked or partially blocked by leaves, mud or other debris then please give it a bit of a clean with your boot or stick. DCC Highways are doing their best but there are an awful lot of drains in Dorset, not to mention potholes etc. If you think that the drain is actually blocked inside or find another Highway problem then let DCC Highways know, either by phone on 01305 221020 or via the dorsetforyou.com website, or contact a member of the Flood Group or the Clerk. Do not attempt to clear blocked drains on the A35. Contact Connect on 01404 823381 or a member of the Flood Group or the Clerk. MEET THE BISHOP The new Bishop of Sherborne, the Rt. Rev. Karen Gorham, will be joining members of the Golden Cap team for a lunch on Tuesday, January 31st 2017 in Hawkchurch Village Hall, from midday to 3:00:pm. This is an open invitation to meet her whilst enjoying a pleasant lunch. Fifty places are available, so it is first come, first served. Chideock W.I. Report

Meeting held on 1st November 2016

When Chideock WI met in November we were intrigued by the title the speaker Dawn Lawrence had given us “It all began with a Camel.” This title came from an incident when a camel ate her son’s trainers and most of his tent. She said that the race is on to save endangered animals and her sole purpose is to raise awareness to help save endangered species. Dawn does this by talks and the sale of her books. She has a passion for wildlife which is evident not only in knowledge and writing but in the descriptive poetry which brings alive the nature of the animals. Proceeds from the sale of her books is directed to the rain Forest Project in Kenya and wild life charities throughout the U.K. Two thirds of the Amazon Forest has already gone, destroying vital habitat for wildlife. Dawn gave us some interesting information about the intelligence of animals. Among the most intelligent are chimpanzees, gorillas, elephants, dolphins, rats, crows and ravens. Nearer home the friendly hedgehog is in danger of extinction and the most endangered animal in the world is the frog. There are many different kinds of frog, one I never want to meet is a Goliath frog who is reputedly as big as a dog. In India there is a large crocodile who has a long thin nose and small mouth, feeds entirely on small fish and is not a threat to humans. I still believe the song “Never smile at a crocodile.” Dawn brought several books along and sold most of them. Shirley Lambert thanked the speaker congratulating her for what she was doing towards the race to save endangered animals across the world. After tea the Vice Chairman Linda Gould reminded us of coming events. Making Christmas wreaths at craft group, the lunch and natter meeting, the walking group, Christmas dinner in December and a day trip to Wells with carols in the Cathedral. More to come in January, lunchtime skittles, book club and auction of unwanted gifts. A warm welcome awaits you.

WI PHOTOS THANKS Dear Friends, Pam and I are so lucky to live in Chideock. As you know, we have had a hard time lately with various illnesses but the people of Chideock have rallied around and been such a help with flowers and visits for Pam, and many get well cards. Also cooked meals for both of us. It has been so special and for those who know me it will be no surprise to see the following poem : Tony Fuller COMMUNITY (What it means to me) I’ll never move because I’d miss The people in my neighbourhood They’re kind, considerate… more than this They make me feel the way I should Like caring for my neighbours too By doing things they cannot do Run an errand, maybe two Doing all the things I could. When I help, in some small way And put another’s life at ease By doing so, make someone’s day While knowing that I’ve tried to please Then life becomes a better place By seeing someone’s smiling face Your worries, this will soon erase Your inner person you’ll appease. I think it’s time that I took stock Of things that matter in my life, When I do, Well! What a shock! I have them all here to survive My friends and my community Make life how it ought to be This place is good enough for me I think I’ll stay in CHIDEOCK.

We wish all our friends in Chideock very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a Healthy New Year To all my friends in Chideock I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and good health and happiness in 2017 As in former years I will not send cards to friends I shall see and greet personally, over the Christmas Season; but I will give a donation to Shelterbox. Sincere greetings to you all, Judy Campbell Marian and Steve Warburton wish all their friends in Chideock a Very Happy and Joyful Christmas, and a Prosperous and Peaceful New Year. Instead of sending cards this year we will be making a donation to St Giles church. Greetings! Deborah and Guy Mills wish all our friends and acquaintances a very happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year. As in the past, we will be sending a donation to our chosen Charity, instead of cards to people living locally. SADLY… On 3rd November I sadly said my goodbyes to my neighbours of six years – Andy and Nicky Forrest, who also were sad, and specially their daughters, to be leaving Chideock. They ran an imported wine business, sold some of the wooden wine boxes and created wonderful things with others. They came to the rescue, temporarily to the village, whilst ‘The Clock’ was closed, with their lively original and popular ‘Lost Souls Bar’ which was greatly enjoyed by many people. Occasionally there was music there – very occasionally – it didn’t bother me, a close neighbour, but it did bother some others, who also objected to the temporary bar… sad souls. They complained to the landlord and Andy and Nicky were given notice to leave. A loss to the village of a very sociable and friendly family. Isabel Ward. (Editor: I don’t usually like to make any comments BUT on this occasion I too would like to add my sadness that they have left – such a fabulous couple who I am sure will be sadly missed by many others too)

“OUR LOVE / HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRISTMAS” We all have a love hate relationship with the ‘Festive Season’! A Christian community were invited to ‘brainstorm’ their pet Hates and Loves. Their ‘hates’ included: waste, false jollity, commercialism, greed & excess, fantasy, sentimentality, travel, overspending, self-centredness. Their ‘loves’ included: Christmas lights, candles, joy of children, treats, family reconnections, music and carols, playing games, mulled wine, thoughtful gifts. Why not make up your own lists, and then seek to minimise the frustrations of the ‘hates’, whilst maximizing the pleasures of the ‘loves’? One of the things I like about Christmas is the good humour, some of it in my favourite form of satire. As in the following poem from the book “Doing December Differently”: “M£rry Chri$tmas”: Dashing round the store On a late December day Through the aisles we go Trolleys in the way. Bells on tills go ring Making wallets light Oh, what fun it is to shop Til’ Jesus Christ’s birthday! The materialistic pressures of Christmas / New Year season are massive; so how can we rediscover a spiritual dimension? Here are a few tips, based upon my own experience:

1. Listen to a variety of inspirational Christmas themed music, both privately and also through public performances, of both traditional and more contemporary styles.

2. Make special effort to spend time celebrating Christmas with those who might not find the Christmas season ‘easy’. Perhaps people living on their own, or suffering particular stresses.

3. Take some ‘time out’ to get away from the frenetic rush of Christmas activity. Even in this Winter season, we have lovely days which are perfect for a walk or trip to a beautiful place.

4. Reread the story of Christmas – the coming of Christ incarnate as a small vulnerable baby. Perhaps through the use of prayer and poetry ask God to reveal its message afresh again.

I hope to see you at one of our many Services, to wish you a blessed Christmas! Revd Stephen.

Come and join in the fun on Saturday 14th January 2017 – doors open from 7.30pm. Grateful thanks go to Symondsbury Estate for once again giving permission to use the beautiful Tithe Barn, Symondsbury. Musical entertainment will be provided by the amazingly talented Jess Upton & The Guilty Pleasures. What’s not to love?! Director, Andrew ‘Harry’ Harrison explained that, ‘all proceeds will go to worthy causes close to our hearts including Young Epilepsy, St Catherine’s Pre-School and the Bridport Arts Centre.’ Harry and Marilyn’s grand-daughter Matilda was diagnosed with epilepsy earlier this year. Matilda, like many children with the condition, has multiple seizures on a daily basis and needs constant care. As epilepsy is a disorder of the brain and there are over 40 different seizure types, there is still much to learn and charities such as Young Epilepsy are vital in supporting children and families who are affected. Proceeds will also go to St Catherine’s Pre-School, who have been a fantastic support to Matilda. The staff at the Pre-School give Matilda the best possible care and the whole family are grateful that she is looked after by such a dedicated group of people. Finally, the fundraiser will be supporting the much loved Bridport Arts Centre. The Arts Centre, which needs funds for essential building work and facilities has been a cultural hub for the people of Bridport and beyond for the past 40 years and long may this continue. Tickets cost just £10 and are on sale now from Creeds. Contact the office on 01308 423411 or email [email protected] to get your hands on some. Book early to avoid disappointment, as this year’s event was a sell out two weeks in advance! Lyme Regis Development Trust (LRDT) We are seeking additional Trustees to bring new skills, fresh ideas, sound leadership and good governance to our exciting range of projects. Our Development Trust uses its property as a basis to generate funding and activities for local social benefit. LRDT owns St. Michael's Business Centre, the Hub and another small property. Its activities currently include youth clubs, job club volunteering opportunities, internet help, careers advice, business support, office space for local businesses and Lyme's Fossil Festival. We already plan a lot more including affordable housing, food training, a video and recording studio and work support. For more information please contact Peter Jeffs (CEO) on [email protected]. Join us and make a difference.

A New Year, a new you, with a little help from food labelling Come the 1st January 2017, after the excitement and excesses of Christmas and all of that wonderful food; Chocolates, Cakes, Turkey, Brussel sprouts! Many of you will be making your New Year’s Resolutions, one of which may be to ‘go on a diet’ or ‘eat more healthily’. Changes in the requirements for food labels policed by Dorset Trading Standards that come into force this month may help you meet your goals. From 13th December 2016, most packed food you buy in the shops will need to be marked with detailed Nutritional Information. This information includes the all-important number of calories the food contains, along with the amount of other nutrients such as Carbohydrates, Sugar, Protein, Fat and Saturated fat. For those of you who are concerned about the amount of salt in your food, that information will now also be given. As long as there is space on the label, the Nutritional Information will be given in a table, usually on the back or side of the package. The figures quoted will be per 100g/ml to make comparisons between different foods easier and some manufacturers may also give information for ‘servings’ or ‘slices’. So if you want to make informed choices about the food that you eat or you are just watching your calories, take a closer look at the labels on your food in the New Year. THANKS Just to let you know our Tea at the Ritz held in the village hall on the 15th October raised a fantastic £1,151.00 A big THANK YOU to those who attended and supported us.
