Following training at the end of last year, Ms Berthon and her new dog, Malo are now an Animal Assisted Therapy Team.

As a result of overwhelming research of the positive benefits to the entire school community, Shalvey Campus and Shalvey

PS have teamed up to introduce a Dog Therapy Program.

Research has found that animals are useful in the promotion of health and wellbeing. Pets can also be used as a tool for socialising, relaxation and

communication, and can also assist children who may be  experiencing anxiety or stress

Five-year-old Malo, a black, border collie labrador cross, had her first day with us last week. Malo will spend Mondays assisting Ms Berthon in her

duties, sitting in on therapy sessions and supporting students.

In week two of this term, Year 7 and 10 students went on an excursion to the Blue Mountains for a field study.

This excursion allowed students to learn about the Blue Mountains World Heritage Site as well as being able to collect first hand data using a variety

of instruments in order to further their understanding.

Year 7 and 10 walked from Echo Point to Katoomba Falls and down Furber Steps. From Furber Steps we had fantastic scenic views of the national park

and at the bottom, we arrived at lush rainforest and cascading waterfalls.

Earlier this term five students from Shalvey Campus -  Carley, Janaya, Steven, Craig and Jermaine participated in an Aboriginal Dance Workshop at Sydney Dance Company.

This workshop was a fantastic opportunity for our students to work with industry professionals to learn more about their culture through dance. In Aboriginal culture, dance

is used for ceremonies, celebrations, rituals, dreamtime and communication.

We are incredibly proud of all our students, in particular, Janaya, who was selected during the workshop to be part of the Aboriginal Dance Ensemble - Gili Dancers.

Janaya and the Gili Dancers will perform at the Ultimo Dance Festival next month.   The students involved are a representation of the talent and skills from Years K-12 in

NSW public schools. For ticketing information for this performance, please contact us.

The NSW Premier's Secondary School Sport Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to

lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Our Year 7 and 8 students will be participating in a ten week sport and physical activity challenge and will work together to foster

increased participation and support each other to "have a go".

7W have already started building up their time participating in physical activity with a class game of volleyball.

Earlier this year, our Year 7/8 Enablers Class participated in the Sydney Water 'Brand Without A Bottle' competition as part of their English studies.

Students were challenged to write a script and create a storyboard that persuaded their peers to choose tap water over bottled water.

A group of Year 8 students - Emmanuel, Purnima, Sean, Atoc and Amuor

had their script chosen as one of the finalists. Their script and storyboard was then professionally filmed and produced.

Each finalist school receives a permanent water refill station, refillable water

bottles and cash prizes for water projects or resources

in the school.

We need your vote! The film that receives the

most votes will be announced the winner.

To vote for the film created by Shalvey Campus students, please visit the  'Brand Without A Bottle'

website or follow the link from our website and Facebook pages.

Our school cross country was held in week 2 and our Deputy Principal,  Mr Berriman set himself a goal for the day - to run 50km!

Students completed the course in their year groups as Mr Berriman ran along beside them. As each year group completed the course, Mr Berriman continued

to run throughout recess and lunch as students cheered him on.

“Undoubtedly the best bit was the chance to run laps with students and staff. The number of kids who waited after their run to do a lap during the recess and

lunch breaks was gold” said Mr Berriman.

Mr Berriman's  goal was to promote

The Run Beyond Project - a project which encourages students to learn about goal

setting, resilience and determination through long

distance running.

Students will begin training sessions next week with

Mr Berriman and will work towards their goal of

completing a 9km race in the Blue Mountains in September.

Our 2017 cross country was a

fantastic show of school pride.

DUBBO TRIP

A group of Clontarf boys attended the Rugby Sevens Carnival coordinated by the Dubbo Clontarf Academy last week. We camped in swags at the Dubbo Academy along with many other academies who

made the trip from across NSW to compete in the carnival.

All of our boys played extremely well. Kyle Whitton received the Clontarf Spirit Award for Shalvey Academy.

The boys were really well behaved, had a great time experiencing Dubbo and look forward to their next trip!

order to create colourful murals within the school. Students are also encouraged to come up with creative designs to turn into murals.

Once we have collected enough bottle tops, teams of students will be formed to create the murals from the winning designs.

The year group who collect the most bottle tops will receive a free sausage sizzle. Other prizes will also follow based on design challenges.

Parents, carers and the community are also encouraged to get involved

COOKING CORNER

A lot of exciting (and delicious) things have been happening

in our kitchens.

Sam and Alia decided to join forces  (and ingredients) to make the biggest pizza of

the lesson. Jaimie got creative with her cooking and made heart-shaped pizzas, while Montanna made

a perfectly round pizza after practicing her dough tossing skills.

Year 7 are enjoying their practical cooking lessons andrecently made delicious cheese and vege triangles.

8V have been developing their food presentation skills andrecently completed the Cake Competition and Mystery Box Challenge.

The students in Stage 5 Food Technology Life Skills course have been working on a project designed to celebrate the significant adult females

in their lives.

They have been developing their skills in investigating, designing and planning to present their final product of a High Tea for their mothers,

aunties and grandmothers.

The students demonstrated their ability to work collaboratively as a team and to adapt to change when needed. The result was an outstanding

High Tea enjoyed by all the guests who attended.
