ACTIVITY BOOK

Page 2: Children's Activity Book

Just like an airport is a place for planes to land, load, and unload travelers, the Port of Long Beach is a place where ships come to dock, and pick up or drop off their cargo: things like sneakers, clothes, electronics, cars, fruits and vegetables, computers, toys, and televisions.

When cargo comes into the United States, it’s called an “import” and when something made here gets shipped to another country, it’s called an “export.”

Cargo is transported using large metal boxes called “containers.” These containers are moved on or off ships using giant cranes. The cranes also move containers onto trains and trucks that will transport their cargo across the United States.

Let’s learn some more about the people and things that make up the Port of Long Beach...

A Sneaker Story

So what is a port anyway?

Have you ever wondered how things like sneakers travel all the way from the factories where they’re made to end up on your feet? Solve this little puzzle to find out! Try to figure out what order the boxes go in, from first to last, by writing the numbers 1 through 6 in the white circles.

Answers: 3, 5, 1, 4, 6, 2.

Maze Craze

On a ship, things have different names than they do on land. A kitchen is called a galley, the floor is called the deck, and walls are bulkheads. Another difference is instead of saying left and right, they say port and starboard. When you are facing the same way as a ship is heading, port is on the left, and starboard is on the right. All ships have a green light on their starboard side, and a red light on their port side. This makes it easy for a captain to tell what direction another ship is heading from far away, or when it’s dark out.

(connect the dots to see what is appearing on the ship’s radar screen)

Take your ship through the maze to the center, trying to collect as many stars as you can along the way, and then sail your ship back to where you started. Here’s the catch: you can’t cross over your path, or go through the same opening twice. See if you can catch all 18!

How many stars did you catch? Write the number here:

Port pilots help ship captains navigate their ships through the port. It’s tricky sailing even for experienced captains, so they need port pilots to help. Part of the job is climbing up huge Jacob’s Ladders, like this one, to board the container ships. Who has to climb the tallest ladder, Doug or James? Count their steps, and write them down in these boxes.

Radar RiddleRadar helps the ship’s captain see things below the water’s surface, like this shape below. Radar works by sending out radio signals, and then waiting for them to bounce off the ground and return. Help the captain by connecting the dots below, and figuring out what object the radar is picking up.

Answer: Doug climbs 19 steps, and James climbs 18. Answer: It’s a crab!

Lab Report

These environmental scientists have a very important job at the Port: monitoring the wildlife and ensuring that they are healthy and happy! Help them out by counting the fish and birds that they see, and then answering the questions below.

Sustainable means being as good to the earth as possible, and thinking about the impact that you have on the future, just like the Port of Long Beach does.

The Port of Long Beach is one of the greenest ports around! The port does its part by making good choices about what’s best for the earth and for all the critters that you’ve seen in this book who make the port harbor their home. You can help out too by choosing which of these statements is a good environmental choice. Positive choices get awarded green flags (just like how the Port of Long Beach gives green flags to ships that reduce their air pollution) so color the box next to the good choice green.

1. Contribute to the protection of the Bolsa Chica wetlands

2. Use air monitoring stations to check on the air quality

3. Make sure all trucks leave their engines running at the port

4. Discipline ships that blow out too much smoke

5. Throw trash into the ocean, where an animal might eat it

6. Offer a reward to ships that switch to cleaner fuels

7. If you were a sea lion who lived in the port’s waters, what would you want people to do to make sure your environment was healthy and clean?

See how many new words can you make from the word:2-4: Good! 5-7: Awesome!8+: Excellent!

1. How many herons did all three scientists find?

2. How many more yellow fish are there than blue fish?

3. How many blue fish did Ken see?

4. How many fish in total did Kim and Jessica find?
