Valparaiso.At just One Hour and a half from Santiago we arrive to the city of Valparaiso and one of the country's most

important seaports and an increasing cultural center in the Southwest Pacific hemisphere. Nicknamed

“The Jewel of the Pacific”, Valparaíso was declared a world heritage site based upon its improvised urban

design and unique architecture. In 1996, the World Monuments Fund declared Valparaíso’s unusual

system of funicular elevators (highly-inclined cable cars) one of the world’s 100 most endangered historical

treasures. The first of which (Ascensor Concepción, also known as Ascensor Turri) opened in 1883 and is

still in service. As many as 28 different funicular railways have served Valparaíso at one time or another, of

which 14 were still in operation in 1992 and still around 12 in 2010. In 1998 Chilean government and local

authorities apply for UNESCO world heritage status for Valparaíso. Valparaíso was declared a World

Heritage Site in 2003. Built upon dozens of steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Valparaíso

boasts a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and cultural

legacy. Valparaíso is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The local culture from its Spanish

origins, football was introduced to Chile by English immigrants, and the first private catholic school in Chile

was founded by French immigrants in Valparaíso: Le Collège des Sacrés Cœurs (The Sacred Hearts

Viña del MarViña del Mar (meaning "Vineyard by the Sea"), is a city and commune on

central Chile's Pacific coast. Its long stretches of white sandy beaches are a

tourist attraction. Known as "La Ciudad Jardín" ("The Garden City"), Viña del

Mar is a Chilean Municipality located in the Valparaíso Region. Viña del Mar is

best known as a tourist and beach resort destination, its white sanded beaches

include "the be seen" Reñaca Beach, Las Salinas Beach. A major attraction is

its Viña del Mar Municipal Casino founded in 1930, it is one the oldest

gambling establishments in South America. Each Summer in late February,

the town hosts its Viña del Mar International Song Festival. The Festival

ground is nestled in the striking natural tree lined hill of Quinta Vergara

Amphitheater.

Portillo (Just in Chilean winter)

Ski Portillo Chile (known simply as Portillo) is a ski resort located 160 kilometers (100 miles) from

Santiago, Chile, near the city of Los Andes. It rises 2880 meters above sea level and its highest

point reaches 3332 meters above sea level. Ski Portillo has 23 ski trails and 12 lifts.

Plans to build the ski area were drawn up in the 1930s, construction began in 1942 and the ski

area was opened in 1949. Portillo host the alpine skiing World Championships in 1966, the same

year Jean Claude Killy won his first medals. Since then, Portillo has become one of the principal

destinations for ski racers to train during the Northern Hemisphere summer and hosts the ski

teams of Austria, Italy and the USA.
