Singapore Management University (SMU) is one of the national universities funded by the Singapore Government. We have worked closely with world class institutions, including the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon University.

Singapore-China bilateral relationship enjoys sustained, rapid and sound development since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990. As a key national university in Singapore, SMU aims to contribute to the Singapore-China bilateral co-operation by nurturing China-ready and bicultural graduates and engaging in China-related top-notch research projects.

As China plays an important role in SMU’s next phase of growth and international reputation building, SMU formed and officially launched the China initiatives in late 2012 to focus on enhancing collaboration with existing universities as well as extending our network of partners in China.

SMU China Initiatives works closely with SMU’s Senior Management, schools, institutes, centres, labs and initiatives on SMU’s China Strategy and Initiatives. It facilitates and lends support to Senior Management’s trips to China and work with schools, institutes and centres to follow-up on the various potential projects.

In summary, SMU’s long-term strategy in China is to

Raise the international profile, brand name and reputation of SMU in China

Improve the quality of student-intake for SMU undergraduate, postgraduates and executive programs

Engage faculty members in common research and PhD Co-supervision with their counterparts at leading Chinese universities

Engage students in student exchange programs and internships in China

A premier university in Asia, the Singapore Management University (SMU) is internationally recognised for its world-class research and distinguished teaching. Established in 2000, SMU’s mission is to generate leading-edge research with global impact and produce broad-based, creative and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy. SMU education is known for its highly interactive, collaborative and project-based approach to learning, and for its technologically enabled pedagogy of seminar-style teaching in small class sizes.

Home to over 8,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, SMU is comprised of six schools: School of Accountancy, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, School of Law, and School of Social Sciences. SMU offers a wide range of bachelors’, masters’ and PhD degree programmes in the disciplinary areas associated with the six schools, as well as in interdisciplinary combinations of these areas.

School of Information Systems (SIS) is recognised internationally for its innovative research and education focused on Information Systems Technology, Information Systems Management, as well as problems and issues at the intersection of IS related technology and management. SIS is eligible for Singapore government funding schemes targeted for Science & Technology based university programmes. SIS is the home of the Living Analytics Research Centre, Livelabs, the Urban Management & Analytics lab, and a number of other well-funded R&D initiatives.

The School of Accountancy (SOA) aims to develop future global citizens who are competent accounting professionals and responsible business leaders, through pertinent knowledge creation, holistic education programmes, and collaborative engagements with the business community. Our programmes are accredited by various reputable professional bodies and are internationally recognized. The SOA community shares a sense of professionalism, personal integrity, social responsibility, as well as an aspiration for exemplary leadership in the field of accounting.

School ofaccountancy

Established in 2007, the School of Social Sciences (SOSS) is Singapore’s first multi-disciplinary social sciences programme. With its interactive pedagogy, flexible curriculum, problem-oriented methodology, our graduates are becoming leaders in a wide-range of fields in business, government, social and academic sectors.

School of Law (SOL) has a strong body of faculty who have obtained degrees from universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Yale and Stanford. Their collective expertise ranges from commercial law and international trade law to constitutional law and criminal law. SOL has expanded its programmes beyond the LLB to include the JD and the LLM, and its Continuing Legal Education programme offers courses for professional development.

Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB) is a dynamic Asian business school with over a hundred full-time faculty and more than 3,000 students. The school offers undergraduate, master’s (including MBA and EMBA) and doctoral programmes and is affiliated with a number of active research centres such as the Institute of Service Excellence and the Centre for Marketing Excellence.

It has a talented international faculty with research expertise in a broad range of areas and extensive experience in research, teaching and consultancy. The Wharton-SMU Research Centre (WSRC) was established in June 1999 as a centre for research collaboration between SMU and the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. It aims at establishing a strong Wharton-SMU presence in the international research arena, with specific focus on issues relevant to Singapore and Asia. Through this joint activity between Wharton and SMU, it helps inculcate a strong research culture at SMU.

The prestigious Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange (SSUE) Programme is spearheaded by the respective Ministries of Education (MOE) of Singapore and China. It is the only G-G (Government-to-Government) Tertiary Exchange Programme between Singapore and China. (May 2015)

During Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s officialvisittoChina,theXinjiangAutonomousGovernment hosted a lunch for him and the Singapore delegation in Kashgar. During the lunch, Professor James Tang, Emily Hogan and Andrew Chin from SMU shared with the Prime Minister about SMU projects in Kashgar. Since 2011 SMU has sent more than 200 students to set-up 3 different cultural centres to help preserve the ethnic cultures. (Aug 2013)

Xinjiang autonomous Government 12th Sino-Singapore Undergraduate exchange

SMU signed a Double-Masters agreement with Peking University (PKU) in June 2013. The PKU- SMU Graduate Collaborative Programme welcomed its first cohort of 28 students on 7 September 2013 at a ceremony held at the Wuxi Campus of PKU’s School of Software and Microelectronics.

In 2014, SMU and Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) signed partnership MOUs to jointly recruit and enroll top students from SYSU and other Tier 1 universities in South China to SMU’s Master of Science in Applied Finance (MAF) programme and Master of Science in Quantitative Finance (MQF) programme.

In 2012, SMU and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) sealed a partnership to recruit and enroll top students from SWUFE and other Tier 1 universities in Western China to SMU’s Master of Science in Financial Economics (MSFE) programme. SMU and SWUFE has subsequently expanded the partnership to include SMU’s Master of IT in Business (MITB) programme, Master of Science in Applied Finance (MAF) programme and Master of Science in Quantitative Finance (MQF) programme, Master of Science in Professional Accounting (MPA) programme.

SMU and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SHUFE) have signed a MOU to jointly enroll top students from SHUFE and other Tier 1 universities in East China into SMU’s Master of Science in Professional Accounting (MPA) programme.

Singapore enterprises and Singapore-based Chinese enterprises have made substantial development in China and in Singapore in recent years. There is a need to address the cross cultural impact on social investment/corporate social responsibility issues. SMU China Forum Series is an annual China Forum held at Singapore Management University, which aims to provide a high-level dialogue platform for the exchange of ideas among leaders from the corporate, government and the academia community addressing on the key challenges and opportunities in China faced by local and foreign enterprises. More than 300 business leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers, academics and students attended the inauguralSMUChinaForum,themedBeChinaReadyon13November2013tolearn,shareanddiscuss trends and influences shaping the growth and development of China.

Given Singapore’s past experience in upgrading its economy, Singapore Management University (SMU) and Southwest University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) are co-organising the Global Forum on “ManagingEconomic Transition: Perspectives from China and Singapore” in Chengdu, China. The forum congregates leading scholars both universities, government officials, business leaders to discuss issues relating to China’s

economic transition, including how certain aspects of the Singapore experience could be relevant to China’s context. It will also share findings from the latest research on China real estate industry, case-studies in logistic management and logistic financing.
