PREFACE
This issue of The Electrochemical Society Transactions (ECST) contains a portion of the accepted papers presented at China Semiconductor Technology International Conference 2012 (CSTIC 2012) held March 18-19, 2012 in Shanghai, China. The compact disc (CD) version of these papers will serve as CSTIC 2012 conference proceedings and will be distributed to registered conference attendees.
CSTIC is the largest annual industrial semiconductor technology conference in China. It aims to provide a platform for executives, managers, engineers and researchers from around the world to exchange the latest developments in semiconductor technology and manufacturing and related fields. It also offers an opportunity for those who are interested in investing and collaboration opportunities in the semiconductor industry in Asia, particularly in China.
CSTIC covers all the aspects of semiconductor technology and manufacturing, including design, devices, lithography, materials, processes, integration, testing, reliability, and manufacturing as well as emerging semiconductor technologies, including clean energy such as light emitting diode (LED), III-V semiconductors and Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
In addition to the traditional areas of semiconductor technology and manufacturing, CSTIC 2012 added a new symposium on MEMS and sensor technologies due to strong interests in these areas as a result of a recent national emphasis on Internet of Things (IoT) and the growing business opportunities in China.
In the meantime, CSTIC spun off the Symposium on Silicon Materials for Electronic and Photovoltaic Applications to form an independent sister conference on photovoltaic technology, called China Photovoltaic (PV) Technology International Conference (CPTIC). CPTIC 2012 will be co-located with CSTIC 2012 and will be held right after CSTIC 2012 in Shanghai, China.
CSTIC 2012 continued the fine tradition of this conference to have a broad international representation and attracted nearly 400 paper submissions from around the world. These papers were from all major semiconductor manufacturing regions in the world, including China, Europe, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Nearly 260 papers have been selected for oral presentations and approximately 80 papers for poster presentations after careful review by the conference organizing committee. Among the accepted papers, 53% of the papers percent are from China, 18% from the United States, 10% from Europe and the remainder from the rest of the world.
194 papers are included in this ECST issue after peer reviews. They represent a snapshot of the recent developments in semiconductor technology and manufacturing in the world. In particular, they offer a glimpse into state-of-the-art semiconductor technology and manufacturing in China. These papers are divided into ten sections according to the ten symposia of CSTIC 2012. They are:
Design and Device Engineering Lithography and Patterning Dry and Wet Etch and Cleaning Thin Film Technology Chemical-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) and Post-CMP Cleaning Materials and Process Integration for Devices and Interconnections Packaging and Assembly
iv
Metrology, Reliability and Testing Emerging Semiconductor Technologies Advances in MEMS and Sensor Technologies
We hope that this ECST issue and the CSTIC 2012 proceedings will prove valuable to the engineers and the researchers in the fast-moving and growing semiconductor industry. We also hope that it will help readers understand the status of semiconductor technology and manufacturing in China. We further hope that it will also serve as a useful reference for those who are interested in nanofabrication, micro- and nano-fluidics, micro- and nano-photonics, organic electronics, bio-chips, photovoltaic (PV), light emitting diode (LED) and other clean energy technologies.
We thank the invited speakers and the authors, particularly the plenary speakers, Professor Leo Esaki, Nobel Laureate, IBM Fellow and Chairman of the Science and Technology Promotion Foundation of Ibaraki, Japan; Dr. Kinam Kim, Samsung Fellow, President and CEO of Samsung Institute of Advanced Technology, Korea; and Dr. Luc Van den hove, President and CEO of IMEC, Belgium, for their valuable contributions to CSTIC 2012. We also thank the more than 100 organizing committee members, particularly the symposium chairs, for their dedication and hard work to help improve the quality and broaden the reach of CSTIC. These committee members are experts in their respective fields of semiconductor technology and are from well-known companies or prestigious institutions. They all have demanding day jobs, yet they have volunteered to devote the 25th, 26th hour of their days to help organize this conference and to review papers presented in this ECST issue. We are grateful for their contributions to the semiconductor community. We are also grateful to the financial support from the sponsors of CSTIC 2012. Finally, we extend our sincere thanks to the SEMI and the ECS staff for their tireless efforts and their meticulous organizational skills to help organize CSTIC 2012 and to assemble and publish this ECST issue and the CSTIC 2012 proceedings.
