    I. Course Description

This course will provide an introduction to pastoral counselling. It is not intended to produce

professional "pastoral counsellors, but it will prepare you to be more effective in counselling

as a pastor or lay leader. You will develop basic counselling skills, such as active listening,

empathy, problem identification and goal setting in order to respond appropriately. You willlearn both the conceptual frameworks and intervention skills that will facilitate positive change

    and personal growth.

More specifically, the course covers three major areas: (1) It will establish a Christ-centered

perspective and the general framework and strategic short-term pastoral counselling. (2) It will

provide an overview of the basic counselling skills and processes. (3) It will cover the basic

tenets and interventions of Logotherapy and meaning centered counselling (MCC).

This course emphasizes MCC for three reasons: (1) Meaning is the core construct in pastoral

counselling. The deepest yearning in every human being is for a sense of meaning, purpose

and significance. This inner void cannot be fully met until we know God personally and follow

His calling for our lives. (2) Relationship is the basis for pastoral counselling. We are relational

beings, created for God and one another; therefore, counselling will not work without

establishing trust and mutual understanding. (3) The messenger is the message. Personal

development is just as important as skill development. An effective counsellor needs to

develop empathy, authenticity, and compassion in order to have a healing presence.

A variety of teaching methods will be used. In addition to lectures, case studies, demonstration

and role play, students also learn from self-reflections and practicum in triads. There will be

ample opportunities for interactions and for hands-on experiences.

    II. Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to :

    1. Develop an understanding of the Biblical foundations of counselling.

    2. Understand the contributions and limitations of pastoral counselling.

    3. Understand the need for integrating psychology with biblical teachings in pastoral

    counselling.

    4. Understand the basic tenets and skills of logotherapy and meaning-centered counselling.

    5. Apply these skills to some of the common problems in life.

    6. Reflect on the course in order to facilitate personal growth spiritually and professionally

    Open book exams:

The mid-term and final exams will be open book take-home exams. The mid-term will cover

the materials of the first 6 weeks; the final will cover primarily the materials after the mid-

term. You may use all kinds of resources, but you cannot plagiarize or collaborate with other

students. The questions will be essay type. The purpose of open-book exams is to give you an

opportunity to review, digest and integrate the materials you have learned from lectures,

readings and your own reflections. Thus, evaluation is primarily based on the depth of your

understanding and the clarity of your expression.

    Mid-term- Due in Week 6 (Feb 20, 2014)

    Final - Due in Week 13 (April 17, 2014)

    Reflective book review:

You may choose any book related to pastoral counselling from the bibliography or the library.

Different from the traditional book review, the emphasis is not on critical assessment of the

book. You need to achieve two objectives in your review: (1) Summarize the main theme(s) of

the book, and (2) Reflect on the books impact on you, such as your psychological or biblicalunderstanding of your world view and identity as a pastoral counsellor. Due in Week 7 (Feb 27,

    2014).

    Quotations and comments:

You will submit a total of ten direct quotations from the texts or other readings. Beginning

from week 2, submit one quotation each week. Write a couple of paragraphs as to why these

quotations were selected and in what ways they deepen your understanding of pastoral

counselling or any of the course objectives. Hopefully, these quotations and comments reflect

your personal journey over the semester. Week 2Week 11

    Case study:

Present a case of any individual in need of pastoral counselling and then describe your

responses to the situation. Decide how to apply MCC in case conceptualization, explore

treatment objective and plans, and decide what MCC macro and micro skills are relevant.

Evaluate the relevance and efficacy of ABCDE. Also discuss your own feelings and thoughts in

the process of helping this individual. Also reflect on the strengths and limitations of a

meaning-centered approach in this case. Due in Week 9 (March 20, 2014)

    Class participation:

Evaluation will be based on attendance and taking part in discussions and role plays.
