Rose John

Finance Coordinator

Community Members:

One of the recommendations from the 2015 and 2005

KPMG Organization Review was that the position of

the Assistant Band Administrator be eliminated. This

report was made available to staff and the community at

large.

It was Council’s decision to carry out this recommenda-

tion, and as a result of eliminating the positon, Kelly

Williams is no longer an employee with the First Nation.

We want to thank Kelly for her years of service and

wish her the best in her future endeavours.

Do any of these situations bother you?

Entering or exiting a highway, changing lanes on the highway, passing, parking, left turns. Yielding the

right of way, night driving, winter driving, the frustrations of today’s complicated traffic environment.

RE: Anishnaabeg Celebration Relay

For Press Release

For a period of 12 millennia prior to the coming of newcomers to our part of Southern Ontario the Anish-

naabeg people lived and worked in an environment protected by lush foliage and tall trees. Occasional

clearings produced gardens of vegetables and fruit orchards for their family's nourishment as well as meat

from deer and moose.

At the end of the 1700's and ending in the mid- 1800's English settlers from the Upper United States plus

immigrants from the British Isles moved into Anishnaabeg Territory and squatted what they thought was

unclaimed land raising the concerns of Anishnaabeg leaders. The main concern was that our people would

be in jeopardy once again. They remembered that Tecumseh died while helping the British soldiers de-

fend Canada from American aggression. During that war called the War of 1812-14 the British soldiers

with the help of Tecumseh and his warriors stopped the American army from taking Canada.

In the year 1827, 14 years after Tecumseh's demise, our leaders were wary of the British army that could

be used to protect the interests of settlers against our people. The British established a fort near Amherst-

burg and it was at this venue where our leaders agreed to surrender in excess of 2 million acres of Aborig-

inal land in exchange for four parcels of land containing less than 30,000 acres.

EVENT DETAILS

Anishnaabeg Run, Walk, Paddle, and Ride Relay.

“In honour of our Ancestors; here and never forgotten.”

At a time when Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday, the Aamjiwnaang Heritage and Culture Club in-

vites everyone to celebrate and gather together by exploring our Anishnaabeg traditional territory in

Southwestern Ontario with this very unique experience. We will be touring much of the perimeter of the

traditional lands--an estimated 600 km*--with scheduled stops at historically sacred spaces. Participants

can join in and/or leave at any point along the route. This event is an opportunity to celebrate, educate,

and gain an understanding of our local history on Turtle Island (North America). The projected time

frame is mid-July, 2017. Sweat equity (volunteers), donations and participants are required for such an

event and we look forward to meeting those interested in becoming involved in this project.

What is Lent - A Time Set Aside Just as we set aside time to spiritually prepare for Christmas Day, it makes sense to set aside time to prepare for the two most important days of the Christian year. Lent is a time that offers us an opportunity to come to terms with the human condition we may spend the rest of the year running from and it brings our need for a Savior to the forefront. Like Advent, Lent is a time to open the doors of our hearts a little wider and understand our Lord a little deeper, so that when Good Friday and eventually Easter comes, it is not just another day at church but an opportunity to receive the overflowing of graces God has to offer.

But unlike the childlike joy associated with the season of Advent, with it's eager anticipation of the precious baby Jesus, Lent is an intensely penitential time as we examine our sinful natures and return to the God we have, through our own rebelliousness, hurt time and again. Lent is also an opportunity to contemplate what our Lord really did for us on the Cross - and it wasn't pretty. But ultimately, the purpose of Lent does not stop at sadness and despair - it points us to the hope of the Resurrection and the day when every tear will be dried (Rev. 21:3).

And about three o'clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:33-49

Although the nature of suffering is not one that offers itself to easy explanations or pat answers, the answers we seek seem to make the most sense in light of the Cross. There is nothing in the world - no religion, philosophy, or material comfort - that offers such a powerful answer to life's toughest questions as the two slabs of wood on which our Savior died. Although I was drawn to Christianity in search of joy, it's the Cross that keeps me coming back day after day, year after year. It is this time of year, known as Lent, that I am reminded of what Jesus did for me. When I look into the eyes of our suffering God, I'm in awe - suddenly the complexity of our Lord, the love of our Lord, the humanity of our Lord shows through. I realize God is not just some nebulous energy source or a grandfather sitting in the clouds - He is so much more. The Cross is where our faith stands when all other faith's fail. Christ's sacrifice and his subsequent resurrection are the true "cruxes" of the Christian faith. Without one there would be no salvation, without the other, no hope. This is why Good Friday and the following Easter Sunday are the most important dates on the Christian calendar - even more so than Christmas.

SARNIA JUSTICE FILM FESTIVAL

The Apology. Sarnia Justice Film Festival hopes you will join us on Saturday, March 25 at 7pm for the screening of "The Apology" at Sarnia Library Theatre The Apology, a National Film Board film, gives voice to the comfort women of World War II. Will this documentary’s sex slave survivors ever get the apology they deserve? A granddaughter asks on their behalf. The Apology follows the personal journeys of three former “comfort women” who were among the 200,000 girls and young women kidnapped and forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Some 70 years after their imprisonment in so-called “comfort stations,” the three “grandmothers”– Grandma Gil in South Korea, Grandma Cao in China, and Grandma Adela in the Philippines – face their twilight years in fading health. After decades of living in silence and shame about their past, they know that time is running out to give a first-hand account of the truth and ensure that this horrific chapter of history is not forgotten. Whether they are seeking a formal apology from the Japanese government or summoning the courage to finally share their secret with loved ones, their resolve moves them forward as they seize this last chance to set future generations on a course for reconciliation, healing, and justice.

In Loving Memory of

Miss Me But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the day,

And the sun has set for me.

I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.

Why cry for a soul set free:

Miss me a little, but not too long,

And not with your head bowed low.

Remember the love we once shared—

Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,

And each must go along.

It’s all part of the maker’s plan,

A stop on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart

Go to the friends we know.

And bury your sorrows in doing good

deeds—

Miss me, but let me go.

It is with saddened hearts that the family of

Joan (June) Wilson Strangway announce her

passing on February 10, 2017 at Bluewater

Health, in Sarnia, at age 78. Beloved wife

of Bruce Strangway. Loving mother of Deb-

orah Wilson, Twila Wilson, Patti Jones and

husband Charlie Trainor. Grandma to Sarah

Stauffer and cherished great grandma to

Tristen and Jacob. Predeceased by her

mother Eleanor White. Dear sister to Ca-

mille dePaépe and wife Wanda Pazdziora,

Peter dePaépe and wife Bonnie Vye as well

as all her nieces and nephews. Predeceased

by brothers and sisters Vince dePaépe sur-

vived by wife Lise dePaépe, Louie dePaépe,

Bright. Predeceased by best friends Diane

Chapman and Jean Henry. Many thanks to

bin for the directions they so lovingly tried

to help us with. Much love to Josh, Jesse,

Gerry, Kenny and Corrin. Special thanks al-

so to all Twila’s caregivers for all their help.

I hope we have not forgotten anyone but all

help was truly appreciated and will never be

forgotten. A celebration of life will be an-
