We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which this parish church stands.

WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH

Today’s mass is celebrated in a church with very few people present, only those who are assisting with the liturgy, and then ‘keeping their distance’ with love. Others will be watching at home, and will have the ‘reserved sacrament’ with them so they can communicate at the appropriate time in the service. Others will be watching at home and will make a spiritual communion when the time comes. Others will not be able to watch the service, but will spend time following the service paper and then either make their communion with the reserved sacrament or make a spiritual communion. Wherever you are, and however you share in worship today, we are united by the Spirit of the Lord as one company of believers with Christians everywhere. If you are watching try less to ‘watch’ the screen as you might a television programme. Enter into the service … say the prayers … sing the hymns!

GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

INTROIT HYMN

1 Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won; Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,

Refrain:

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, Endless is the vict'ry thou o’er death hast won.

2 Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; Let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting:

Refrain

3 No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; Life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife, Make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Refrain

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Christ is risen. Alleluia, Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia, Alleluia!

PENITENTIAL RITE

Bishop Lindsay introduces the service and invites the people to confess their sins:

My brothers and sisters, as we wait for the Lord to speak to us through his Word and feed us with the gift of himself in the Holy Communion, let us call to mind our sins.

Show mercy to us loving Father, We have sinned against you, please make us anew. In your love and your grace you forgive us, Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Look not on our failings, Lord Jesus, We have sinned against you, please make us anew. By your life and your death you redeem us, Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Come fill our hearts, Holy Spirit, We have sinned against you, please make us anew, Forgive us, and heal us and save us, Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

4

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

Glory to God, we give you thanks and praise; of heav’nly joy and earthly peace we sing. We worship you, to you our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav’nly King.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, you bore for us the load of this world’s sin. O Lamb of God, your glorious vict’ry won, receive our pray’r, grant us your peace within.

Alone, O Christ, you only are the Lord, at God’s right hand in majesty most high: who with the Spirit worshipped and adored; with all the heav’nly host we glorify.

COLLECT

Let us pray:

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: help us when we hear his voice to know him who calls us each by name, and to follow him where he leads; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PETER

2: 1-10

Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slan-der. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: "See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner," and "A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble be-cause they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may pro-claim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The King of love my Shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his And he is mine for ever.

Where streams of living water flow My ransomed soul he leadeth, And where the verdant pastures grow With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love he sought me, And on his shoulder gently laid, And home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death's dark vale I fear no ill With thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread'st a table in my sight; Thy unction, grace bestoweth: And O what transport of delight From thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise Within thy house for ever.

Christ is the shepherd of the sheep Lays down his life their souls to keep My love is sure and strong and deep. Alleluia.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

10: 1-15

"Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him be-cause they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

SERMON

Bishop Lindsay

After the homily there is a short time for reflection.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary And became truly human.

Page 7: Christ Church — Enter the Mystery€¦ · We have sinned against you, please make us anew. In your love and your grace you forgive us, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Look not

7

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

All respond at the end of each petition

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

After the last petition, all say together:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

THE PEACE

The risen Christ came among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Them they were glad when they saw the Lord.

The peace of the risen Christ be always with you And also with you

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

OFFERTORY HYMN

1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; His the sceptre, His the throne. Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Sion Thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of ev'ry nation Has redeemed us by His blood.

2 Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now. Alleluia! He is near us; Faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received Him When the forty days were o'er, Shall our hearts forget His promise, "I am with you evermore"?

3 Alleluia! Bread of Angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay. Alleluia! Here the sinful Flee to You from day to day. Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth's Redeemer, plead for me, Where the songs of all the sinless Sweep across the crystal sea.

4 Alleluia! King eternal, Thee the Lord of lords we own; Alleluia! born of Mary, Earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne: Thou, within the veil hast entered, Robed in flesh, our great high priest; Thou on earth both Priest and Victim In the eucharistic feast.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, ever-living God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us.

Page 9: Christ Church — Enter the Mystery€¦ · We have sinned against you, please make us anew. In your love and your grace you forgive us, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Look not

9

By his death on the cross, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin, and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. And now we give you thanks that you raised him to life triumphant, and exalted him in glory. By his victory over death, the reign of sin is ended, a new day has dawned, a broken world is restored and we are made whole once more. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising you and singing:

Page 10: Christ Church — Enter the Mystery€¦ · We have sinned against you, please make us anew. In your love and your grace you forgive us, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Look not

10

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

The celebrant continues the prayer which now recalls the Last Supper and the invitation from Jesus to remember his death and resurrection in the gift of Holy Communion.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,

The sanctuary bell is rung.

we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

The sanctuary bell is rung.

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

The sanctuary bell is rung.

Page 11: Christ Church — Enter the Mystery€¦ · We have sinned against you, please make us anew. In your love and your grace you forgive us, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Look not

11

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The celebrant breaks the Host in silence

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

The celebrant sings:

through him, with him, in him, united in the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour are yours O Lord, Almighty Father, Amen, Amen.

AGNUS DEI

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Behold the Lamb of God Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

When the sanctuary bell is rung, those who have the reserved sacrament with them in their homes are invited to receive it reverently.

Those who are making a spiritual communion should pray one of the following two prayers:

At thy feet O Jesus I prostrate myself before thee with an unworthy yet contrite heart, humbled, yet longing to be in your eucharistic presence. I love the gift of yourself offered to me in this great and Blessed Sacrament. Though unable to receive this food for my journey, I desire all the graces that this encounter with you can bring, and offer my heart afresh as a place where you might dwell. While I wait for the day when I shall again have the joy of sacramental communion, I trust in your desire to abide in me, and wish to possess thee in spirit. Come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for thee.

Or

Page 13: Christ Church — Enter the Mystery€¦ · We have sinned against you, please make us anew. In your love and your grace you forgive us, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Look not

13

Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you, body and blood, soul and divinity. Since I cannot at this time receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you or from the community of your church, and lead me with all your holy people to your banquet in heaven. Amen

Once you have received communion or made your spiritual communion. spend some time in re-flection. You might find it helpful to use the following prayer in thanksgiving:

In days of joy and sorrow, in times of serenity and in times of confusion, be unto me O Lord, my good shepherd, guiding and directing the course of my daily living. And when it be that I stray, or so fail or am weary, do thou lift me up, and carry me on thy shoulders and set me down in a better place that I may serve thee with a good ful-some heart. And when the day comes, that I must lay down this earthly life, by thy glorious wounds make me worthy of a place in the green pastures of everlasting life. Amen

COMMUNION HYMN

Sing as a prayer

1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Refrain

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Refrain

3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you what is pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen

Let us go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia Alleluia! Thanks be to God. Alleluia Alleluia!

REGINA CÆLI

Sung to the tune of ‘Jesus Christ is risen today’

Joy to thee, O Queen of Heaven. Alleluia! He whom Thou wast meet to bear. Alleluia! As he promised hath arisen. Alleluia! Pour for us to God thy prayer. Alleluia!

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia. For the Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia.

O God, who by the resurrection of thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ has brought joy to the whole world; grant that with the help of the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

As the celebrant and attendants leave the church, the final verse of the great Easter hymn is sung:

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; Life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife, Make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the victory, thou o’er death has won.
