Dear Cathedralites Today is Harvest Festival. How well I remember as a kid waling up the aisle of St John’s Anglican Church in Woolston proudly holding up the corn that I’d cut from my Dad’s veggie garden. It was a thrill. So today we thank God for the harvest. And welcome to the seasonal workers from Vanuatu, to the Hoddy family, to others who have been part of the scheme that enables those from the Pacific to come and help harvest many crops in the Nelson Region. Sentence: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it. Psalm 24:1 Collect: We bless you, God of Seed and Harvest, and we bless each

other. We pray that the beauty of this world, and the love that created it, might be expressed though our lives and that we may be a blessing to others. This we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen

I also want to commend the Cathedral Holiday Programme headed once again by our enthusiastic Johnny Laing. You’ll see the exciting posters all around town advertising it. So, come along, be a helper, bring your children, your neighbours, the grandchildren. It’s often many years later it has occurred to me a wee while ago, that people in the 30’s look back and remember those days when they attending the Church Holiday Programme, and explain how much it impacted positively on their lives. It was good once again to go to The Loaves and the Fishes at All Saints last Thursday and to lead a bit of community singing. It’s an opportunity to meet folk in Nelson who come to enjoy such a lunch. Tonight at Word & Worship is this wonderful and gifted Youth Pastor of Mapua Anglican Church, Mark Waweru, who hails from the Nairobi Chapel. He’s a great speaker, come and hear him. He is also bringing some of the young people to join us in the 7pm service tonight. Of course at 5.30pm we will be having Choral Evensong with a special Anthem. I hope you are enjoying the spectacle of the Commonwealth games. While it’s wonderful to see the underdogs coming up from nowhere and getting gold my sympathies lies with the gold medal favourites who are expected to win. The pressure on them must be enormous and it must be such a relief when they do win the gold. To that end maybe our netballers might strike gold unlikely though it seems, because we have lost all expectations that they will win! In His service, Mike

Congratulations to Wale Ilori on becoming a New Zealand Citizen. Wale and the Mayor Rachel Reese

1These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jeru-salem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2 This was after King Jeconiah, and the queen mother, the court officials, the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the artisans, and the smiths had departed from Je-rusalem. 3 The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom King Zedekiah of Judah sent to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. It said: 4 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jeru-salem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters

in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into ex-ile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your wel-fare. 8 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let the prophets and the diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, 9 for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, says the LORD. 10 For thus says the LORD: Only when Baby-lon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfil to you my promise and bring you back to this place. 11 For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 12 Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.

1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the

growth. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have a common pur-pose, and each will receive wages ac-cording to the labour of each. 9 For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Matthew 13:1-9 1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. 2 Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the

beach. 3 And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 Other

seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. 6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up

and choked them. 8 Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 Let anyone with ears listen!’

Psalm 142

1. I call to the Lord with a loud voice: with a loud voice I entreat his favour.

2. I pour out my complaint before him: and tell him all my trouble.

3. When my spirit is faint within me you know my path: in the way where I walk they have hidden a snare for me.

4. I look to the right hand and see: but no man will know me;

5. All escape is gone: and there is no one who cares for me.

7 It was not because you were more numerous than any other people that the LORD set his heart on you and chose you—for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 It was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath that he swore to your ancestors, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a

thousand generations, 10 and who repays in their own person those who reject him. He does not delay but repays in their own person those who reject him. 11 Therefore, observe diligently the commandment—the statutes and the ordinances—that I am commanding you today. 12 If you heed these ordinances, by diligently observing them, the LORD your God will maintain with you the covenant loyalty that he swore to your ancestors; 13 he will love you, bless you, and multiply you; he will bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain

Deuteronomy 7:7-14

6. I call to you O Lord I say ‘You are my portion in the land of the living.’

7. Heed my loud crying for I am brought very low: O save me from my persecutors for they are too strong for me.

8. Bring me out of the prison-house: that I may praise your name.

9. When you have given me my reward: then will the righteous gather about me.

and your wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the issue of your flock, in the land that he swore to your ancestors to give you. 14 You shall be

the most blessed of peoples, with neither sterility nor barrenness among you or your livestock.

Revelation 2:1-11 1 ‘To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands: 2 ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance. I know that you cannot tolerate evildoers; you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them to be false. 3 I also know that you are enduring patiently and bearing up for the sake of my name, and that you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember then from what you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this is to your credit: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 Let anyone who has an

ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers, I will give permission to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise of God. 8 ‘And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of the first and the last, who was dead and came to life: 9 ‘I know your affliction and your poverty, even though you are rich. I know the slander on the part of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Beware, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have affliction. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Whoever conquers will not be harmed by the second death.

Guide the team charged to lead the music in our Cathedral giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

ST BARNABAS PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, we pray today for the “Chibok girls” of Nigeria, kidnapped from their school in Chibok during the night of 14-15 April 2014. You know, O Father, the ordeal that these mainly Christian girls suffered, as they were forcibly converted to Islam and made to marry jihadists. We pray especially for the 100 or so who are still in captivity. Be close to them in their hearts, reminding them of Your love and the truths of Your Word. Enable them to cling to You as their Saviour, Lord and God, despite the teaching of radical Islam forced on them for four long years. Thank you that around 160 girls have escaped, been rescued or released; we ask that You would help them too, as they recover from the trauma of what they have endured.

Amen.

YOU'RE INVITED TO THE 2018 NELSON WALK FOR LIFE!

This is a celebration of life from conception to natural death. It is a peaceful, non-judgmental statement that life is precious and worth living. It opposes abortion and euthanasia by making a

positive case for life (rather than being a protest march).

It is a family-friendly event. It starts at the top of the cathedral steps on Trafalgar Street and walks to Halifax St and back (return via Rutherford Street).

All welcome to join us in making a great statement.
