Dear Friends

On meeting her child from school for the very first time the anxious

Mum asked “Was it alright? Did you enjoy it?” The child replied

without telling her mum anything of what she had been doing at

school. “I did enjoy being at school”. Then after a short pause

“What are we doing tomorrow?”

I wonder how many of you can relate to that. Starting school or

preschool is an anxious time for parents although the children usually

take it in their stride and most seem to enjoy school.

At Christ Church both our Toddler groups will be losing children they

have known and loved for most of their infancy as they start school.

We wish them well.

The next big anxious time for parents and for children of course is

that move from primary school to senior school and some of our FFC

(Faith for Children) will be experiencing that. It’s natural for both

children and parents to be a little anxious at these times in their

children’s lives.

Then of course comes sixth form, college or university. Some young

people will be leaving home for the first time.

If you are one of those parents who are anxious about your child

starting school, or going to their senior school, or leaving home and

going to university perhaps it would be good to focus on Jesus’

words because he told us not to be anxious about anything. Easy to

say and hard to do I hear you say and I can get as anxious about

things the same as anyone but I do believe that God who made such

a beautiful world for us, who sent his son to die on a cross and rise

again so

Christ Church Harvest 2019

We will be supporting The Community of the Sisters of the Church again

this Harvest. Last year, they gave out 10,000 bags of food to needy peo-

ple. They are seeing an increase in the number of people disadvantaged

by benefit sanctions and struggling to meet fuel costs. As a result, the

Sisters are more dependant than ever on our donations. Christ Church

Harvest will be on Sunday 6th October. The church will be decorated for

Harvest and we would appreciate your donations of the following:-

Tins of meat, rice pudding, fruit, custard, baked beans, soup,

vegetables and tuna. All tins need to be “in date” please.

Packets of cereals, pasta, rice, instant soup, biscuits, tea bags

and jars of coffee

Sundries – tin openers, toiletries for men and women and large

size nappies.

The Sisters say “we are now spending anything between £1000 and

£2500 PER WEEK, most of it on bulk buying of basic foods to supplement

the food donations we receive. During the winter months, £210 PER

WEEK of this goes on topping up utility keys for callers who are struggling

to pay for gas or electricity and we urgently need to replenish our funds in

order to meet this basis need”.

On Sunday 15th September we will be welcoming Sister Theresa Mary to

our 10 o’clock service where she will be talking more about the work that

they do. Do please come and listen to her.

Your Harvest donations can be brought to the office during office hours or

to the church on Saturday mornings or Sundays.

Thank you in advance, everything we donate is appreciated very much by

those who receive them.

CHOIR VISIT TO ST MARY REDCLIFFE

Christ Church and Tickenham choirs participated in their eagerly antici-

pated annual visit to St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol on 28th July to

sing Evensong.

A large congregation, including members of Christ Church, enjoyed

hearing the choir sing a beautiful version of the Magnifcat and Nunc

Dimittis by Stanford, as well as an anthem -

All in the April Evening - made famous by the Glasgow Orpheus

Choir.

This last item was movingly announced as being a tribute to Betty Llew-

ellyn, who has just retired from the choir, sitting in the congregation

with her husband Raymond.

As usual, the ladies of St Mary Redcliffe provided a lovely selection of

food with tea between the rehearsal and Evensong.

The Very Rev. David Frayne, who had taken that morning's Holy Com-

munion and Baptism at Christ Church, reminded us that he had insti-

gated this tradition many years ago, and how pleased he was that it has

been continued. As the newest member of the choir, it is good that

with Phil Lawrence's leadership, we continue this tradition as long as

possible. John Broughton

"Chorister's Confession' Almighty and most merciful Conductor, We have erred and strayed from thy beat like lost sheep. We have followed too much the intonations and tempo of our own hearts; We have offended against the dynamic markings; We have left unsung those notes we ought to have sung, and we have sung those notes we ought not to have sung, and there is no support in us. But thou, O Conductor, have mercy upon us miserable singers. Succour the chorally challenged, Restore thou them that need extra note bashing, Spare thou them that are without pencil, Pardon our mistakes, and have faith, that hereafter, we will follow thy direction, and sing together in perfect harmony

Fewer of us give to charity

We are giving less time and money to charity than we were two years

ago. That is the finding of a recent survey by Charities Aid Foundation

(CAF). It found that the proportion of those of us giving money or

sponsoring someone has dropped from 69 per cent in 2016 to 65 per-

cent in 2018.

The trend has been described as ‘worrying’ by the CAF. It comes as

figures show that our trust in charities has fallen (from 51 to 48 per

cent). Oxfam and Save the Children both attracted negative media

coverage after staff were accused of sexual misconduct, while other

charities have been accused of chasing vulnerable people.

CAF said that charities now have the challenge of finding ways “to in-

spire people to give and demonstrate that their money is making a dif-

ference.”

HARVEST BUFFET

++++++++++++++

SUNDAY 6 OCTOBER AT 12 PM

Our Harvest Lunch this year will take the form of a Plough-

man’s Buffet Lunch. This will make it easier for everyone

especially as on that Sunday it is the Children’s Service

and we want families and their children, in particular, to

feel very welcome. The Children’s Service will start at

11.00 am on that Sunday so that we can eat straight after.

We will put a sign-up form in the Church Porch to give us

some idea of how many to cater for. If you forget to sign it

you will still be very welcome. This is our Church Family

and includes everyone.

Sky fright

An airliner flew into a violent thunderstorm and was soon bumping

around in the sky. One very nervous lady happened to be sitting next

to a clergyman and turned to him for comfort. “Can’t you do some-

thing?” she demanded forcefully.

“I’m sorry ma’am,” said the minister gently. “I’m in sales, not manage-

ment.”

SEPTEMBER 2019

4 September, Holy Communion 10.00am in Church, prayers Mary

Sheasby 18 September, Ploughman’s Lunch 12.30pm - Vestry Hall

Well, we certainly have had a hot summer this year! As I type this, I

realise how lucky we are in this part of the country when you consider

the poor folk in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, having to be evacuated

from their homes because of the amount of rain they have had.

Obviously, we all need to think about what we can do to combat global

warming, otherwise we will destroy our beautiful world. We need to

think of future generations and what we leave for them to inherit. I try

to think about the amount of plastic on food shopping and wrappings

that can’t be recycled. I do buy milk from the supermarket, but am

thinking I should go back to the milkman and have the milk delivered in

bottles. If I really think about it, I know there is loads more I could do.

For instance, there is a shop in Nailsea High Street where you can buy

herbs, spices, beans, rice, flour, etc and take your own container.

On Wednesday 18 September, we have our Ploughman’s Lunch and this

is usually well attended. Please tell your friends and family about it as

we love to have visitors, and meet our members’ families. Saying that,

it is open to anyone who would like to come, and you will be made most

welcome. The tickets this year will be £6 for a ploughman’s lunch and a

pudding. Do come!

Looking back to June, we all enjoyed our Cream Tea at Cheddar

Garden Centre – after tea we were able to look around at the plants etc

which made it more interesting. I w as away on holiday when we had

the joint garden visit with After 8’s and was sorry to have missed it. I

have had feedback and people said they really enjoyed it.

It is 4 months until Christmas!!! I know I can’t believe it either. We

were in Devon at Knighthayes, National Trust, yesterday and they

Page 15: Christ Church Chronicle · 2019. 9. 4. · 2 Christ Church Nailsea in the United Benefice of Christ Church, Nailsea and St Quiricus and St Julietta, Tickenham Associate Vicar : Rev

15

already have their Christmas cards and calendars. Chris Mahony has

next year’s diaries too.

Getting older with aches and pains isn’t any fun. We all have them;

most of us do if we are truthful. Bad backs, hips, knees, the older

you get the more you get. The thing is to keep our sense of humour.

That is if you are not in so much pain or obviously really ill, that is a

different matter. I find things seem a lot better if you can laugh

about it. Prayer too should be our first thought of course. I will leave

you with this:- Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made; Our times are in His hand Who saith “A whole I planned, Youth shows but half; trust God: see all nor be afraid”. Enjoy the rest of the Summer.

God bless

Much love

Jacqui

North Somerset Child Contact Centre

A Child Contact Centre is a safe, neutral place where the children

of separated families can meet with their non-resident parent. The

North Somerset Centre operates twice a month in Clevedon or

Nailsea and is run and managed by the Mothers' Union. It is

staffed by a team of volunteers, male and female, who are all DBS

cleared and trained. This is a valuable service bringing much happi-

ness to "absent parents" and their children. Referrals are always

welcome and a few more volunteers would also be gratefully wel-

comed. If you feel that you could spare a couple of hours on a Sat-

urday afternoon occasionally, or would like more information please

phone Sylvia on 07749712699 or speak to Jacqui Broughton -

When Columbus started out, he didn’t know where he was going.

When he got there, he didn’t know where he was. When he got

some teenagers who go on family holidays...

A time for grace and patience

September is the month when schools go back, harvest services are

being planned, and the College of Bishops takes place. Yippee! Actu-

ally I’m not being sarcastic. Of course there’s always a sense of this

is a month when many of us feel ‘back at work’. It can seem a busy

month with lots to challenge us. However we do have some agency in

how we approach the tasks of daily living, don’t we?

So, for instance, at the College of Bishops this month, we shall do

more work on ‘Living in Love and Faith’, the theology, social anthro-

pology, biblical scholarship and scientific knowledge being consid-

ered as the Church reflects on issues of human identity, sexuality

and marriage. I’m looking forward to it. And that’s not being sarcas-

tic either. You see it is not that this will be an easy topic, something

which we can just all agree to but rather it will be an opportunity to

meet together with one another in the presence of God. We will no

doubt have some difficult conversations, grapple over impondera-

bles, find ourselves feeling vulnerable but this is the stuff of life, and

seeking to find God’s way in a world which has little time for reli-

gious faith anymore.

The College meets in an Oxford college over a few days and it can

sometimes seem rather distant from the everyday world in which we

live. However we always celebrate Holy Cross day while w e are

there. The Collect for that day reminds us that “the passion of thy

blessed Son hast made an instrument of painful death to be for us

the means of life and peace”.

That surely means that life and peace can be found even through the

experience of pain and death. In fact sometimes it’s the only way

God Loves Me Always

By Make Believe Ideas, Authentic, £8.99

An inspirational collection of stories to teach chil-

dren how God can help them handle their emo-

tions. Each story explores a particular emotion: sadness, happiness,

fear and anger. The stories are written in clear, simple text and are

brought to life with beautiful illustrations.

Included with each story is a page of information for parents which

includes questions to ask children to engage them more deeply with

each new emotion, as well as Bible quotes to prompt thought and

discussion. A sticker sheet and reward chart are also included at the

back of the book to reinforce lessons learnt.

to find them. Dealing with complex issues, tackling challenging

tasks is not about finding the easiest and quickest route to an an-

swer. Sometimes it requires much more from us and we need the

grace and patience of the Christ who made Himself a sacrifice for

us.

The following is the prayer we use on Holy Cross Day after we re-

ceive bread and wine together, perhaps we need to use it more as

we face the challenge of seeking to live as men and women of God

in His world today.

“O faithful God, whose Son bore our sins in his body on the tree and

gave us this sacrament to show forth his death until he come: give

us grace to glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our

salvation, our life and our hope.”

Following the last meeting of The Events Committee, on Wednes-

day 14th August 2019, it was decided we needed more Helpers at

our Events, especially The Summer Fayre. We need committed

people who are available before the event and on the day!

Please give this your consideration.

Our Committee is now a smaller one, but with the same amount of

work to be done!"

The Bible that was thrown away

The story is told by Brother Andrew, who worked with the Persecuted

Church, of a Christian pastor who was travelling on a train in the old

Soviet Union.

There was one other passenger in the railway car. Soon the two men

were chatting. The subject of religion came up, and the other man ex-

tolled the logic of atheism and criticised religious belief. Then the Chris-

tian bravely expressed his own views, took out his Bible to show the

man some relevant verses. But the atheist was unmoved and annoyed.

As the futility of their argument became clear, the men lapsed into si-

lence. When a little later the Christian was nearing his stop, he left the

compartment to get his suitcase. He returned to find his Bible was

missing. The atheist was closing the train window and sneered. It was

clear that he had thrown the Bible out.

A few months later, a stranger came to call upon the Christian pastor. It

was a man from a neighbouring village who asked to be baptised. The

pastor was astonished. The stranger told him this story:

“Until a few months ago I knew nothing of Christianity. I am just a local

builder, working near the railway track. Suddenly one afternoon a book

came flying out of the window of a passing train and landed nearby. I

walked over and picked it up. It was a Bible – the first I had ever seen.

“I took it home and out of curiosity began to read it. I was amazed by

what I read, and I have become a Christian. Now I want to be baptised

and meet with other Christians. I have heard rumours that you are also a

Christian, so I hoped that you would help me.”

The astonished Christian pastor did indeed baptise the builder, and also

confided his side of the story of the flying Bible. Within a few years the

builder had converted several of his neighbours, and a tiny Christian

church had been planted within his own community. All because of a

thrown-away Bible.

POETRY CORNER

The Harvest Comes

The harvest comes

The fields turn gold

The grain is ripe.

And, as of old

The workers glean,

And thresh, and grind

They knead and bake

And bread we find

Fruit of the grain

A Holy token

Of our Lamb of God

His body broken

The sun shines warm

The grapes are ripened

The fruit is picked

For Vintner’s stipend.

The grapes are crushed

Their juices stored

And in due course,

The wine is poured

Fruit of the vine

A token, too

Of the blood of Christ

That was shed for you

By Nigel Beeton

Name Above All Names

Name above all Names, what’s in a

name?

Jesus, Messiah, He’s coming again.

Alpha Omega, Beginning and End,

Apostle and High Priest, the sinners’

Friend.

Walking on water, calming the storm,

God incarnate calling us home.

Creator, the I Am, nailed to a tree

Lion of Judah dying for me.

Risen, the Victor, conquering King

Coming with clouds redemption to

bring.

To gather His bride for heaven above

To reign with the Lamb whose name

is Love.
