The Vicar writes: Setting dates for events can sometimes feel like a conspiracy, The longer ahead you seem to go, the more it turns up as the weekend everyone else is busily organising for. There was a real note of frustration in Christine Clark’s voice when we found out that the weekend of 11th and 12th of June would be the celebrations to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. You can’t phone the Palace and ask for them to just change the date by a week or so. Too look on the Brightside there are lots of people awaiting the Hilderstone Scarecrows because it’s been on the calendar for so long. Trying to combine scarecrows and Royalty may well prove quite a challenge. That is if you are trying to avoid the Tower. In our church service on 12th June there will be a number of themes. One is to represent the the 4 home nations in the hymns we sing, and there is a hymn that includes the word Commonwealth. Over the course of that weekend much will be said about our Queen. From the young lady who acceded unexpectedly to the throne, To the family who couldn’t seem to keep off the front pages. And to the years of loss as her mother and her sister come to the end of their lives. Then there was the death of her daughter in law, Diana, in very different circumstances. What is it, the reporters may say, that enables her to come through those tough years and yet still appear such a gracious lady? The answer that many would give is her faith Perhaps the most remarkable aspect to our Queen’s life is her faith. Gradually it has been revealed to us. Royal biographer William Shawcross observes Her faith is something she speaks humbly but openly, especially in her Christmas broadcasts. The Queen said ‘I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new

beginning. I know that only way to live my life is to try to do what is right and to do give of my best in all the day brings, and to put my trust in God. I draw strength from the message of hope in the Christian gospel.’ The scarecrows that are so skilfully put together every two years are often a reflection of real people in unlikely situations. When I look at the pulpit there’s a larger than life scarecrow, and it starts me thinking if I look at all like that . But what I see is a straw person. A straw person who has no hope, not made in God’s image or redeemed by the gospel However the scarecrows make us laugh or bring out feelings of admiration for the makers, and they start us thinking. What from our human world is it? And what does it reflect? What we can say with straw may be much more then we could in words. I’ll just watch out for the preacher in that pulpit Peter Dakin The Servant Queen is a 64 page colour book that isn’t a best seller. The Servant Queen is without the name of author or editor on it’s cover. The Servant Queen could be on your coffee table where it will be admired by your visitors. It’s not a best seller because it can’t be sold, So residents of Hilderstone will benefit from a link of the Parish and Parochial Church Councils that will fund, we hope, sufficient copies for each dwelling too have a free copy. It comes with our best wishes Rev Preb Peter Dakin Vicar. Cllr Roy Clark, Parish Council Chairr Are you ‘crafty’? If you are crafty there’s some good news for you. On the third Sunday of each month there is a small gathering at the back of church of young people who are crafty. Crafty in this instance means to like doing things with paints, paper and glue. Each month the activity is different, and they are shown off to the adult congregation at the end of their service. Crafty is ideal for primary school aged children. To find out more, get in touch with Lisa on 01889 589244.
It may be that we are tired of hearing
about it, but Thursday June 23rd will be
one of the most important days in our
life time – and in the life time of our
children and grandchildren. Whether
the United Kingdom votes to remain in
the European Union or to leave, the
consequences will be far – reaching
and impossible to fully determine. We
might ask for more information but the
reality is that no one can be sure what is
going to happen on June 24th and in
the subsequent weeks and months.
However we vote, we are stepping into
an unknown future.
It is not the role of a Bishop to tell you
how you should vote but it is my respon-
sibility as a leader of the Church to
remind you that you should vote and
offer a Christian perspective to this
crucial decision.
There will be many different opinions
expressed in these last days leading up
to the Referendum and it is important
that we listen to all views and then
reflect on them prayerfully, asking the
guidance of the Holy Spirit as to how we
should vote.
Jesus reassures us that part of the role
of the Holy Spirit is to guide us into all
truth and so we should find time not
only to ask for guidance in our prayers
but also to leave space in order to
receive an answer – for God gave us
two ears and one mouth so that we
might listen twice as much as speak!
We believe God always answers prayer
although not necessarily at the time or
in the way that we expect.
Prayer has been described as ‘wasting
time with God’ and that is a very good
description. When you are in love with
someone you simply enjoy being with
them – not necessarily ‘doing’ anything
but just ‘being’ in their company. So it is
with God. In prayer we meet God. We
learn to see the world and other people
through God’s eyes and we begin to
see ourselves through God’s eyes too.
We start to understand what it really
means to be loved sincerely and
unconditionally for ever.
When some of us help as volunteers at
the Night Church in the centre of the
night – clubbing district of Hanley, we
often have young people requesting
prayer – invariably for others
(especially for their grandparents!) but
sometimes for themselves. When they
ask that we should ‘do’ the praying we
always say that of course we will but
invite them to join with us in praying too.
The sad response is often that they
could not possibly pray because they do
not know how to do it! But that is
nothing new – the disciples asked
Jesus to teach them how to pray as
John the Baptist had taught his
followers – and of course Jesus then
gave us that prayer that is known and
welcomed throughout the world (except
in certain cinema chains!) – the prayer
which begins “Our Father in heaven”.
However we vote on June 23rd we
cannot be certain of the future we are
passing to our children and young
people but if there is one gift that we
can give them that will always be of
benefit to them, it is to know the value of
prayer and how to pray.

BISHOP OF STAFFORD’S PASTORAL LETTER
JUNE 2016
SEASONAL ADVICE From Staffordshire Police
Staffordshire is a safe county to live in, but we still need to be on our
guard and take precautions to make life difficult for criminals. Make sure
that your valuables are identifiable by marking them with your post code
and house number.
At home
Summer weather encourages us to leave our doors and windows open, but
this is just what opportunist burglars are looking for. They don’t plan their
crimes, they just take advantage of an easy target, and what could be
easier than a house where you don’t even have to break in! Make life more
difficult for burglars by keeping doors and windows locked when you are
out and in all unoccupied rooms, and don’t forget to make your house
secure while you are out relaxing in the garden.
Be a good nieghbour this summer. Contact the police immediately if you
see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, and if possible, take
the registration numbers of any suspicious vehicles.
Holidays
Before you go, cancel milk and paper deliveries and tell near neighbours so
that they can keep an eye on your home. Ask someone you trust to be
your key-holder and to make your house looks lived in, for example by
opening and closing the curtains and taking in the post. Use automatic
timer switches to turn on lights and a radio. Cut your lawn before you go
and if it is an extended holiday, try to arrange for a neighbour or friend to
cut it while you are away. Put away all of your garden tools, ladders and
garden furniture. They can all be used to break into a house, and if you
have a shed or garage, check that it is locked and secure.
Don’t discuss your holiday plans on social media or where you could be
overheard by strangers and don’t put your home address on luggage. Keep
it tucked inside your cases during the outward journey. Finally, as you are
leaving, double check that you have closed and locked all doors and
windows, and don’t forget to set the burglar alarm.
Vehicles
Will you be visiting beauty spots this summer? Be on your guard, thefts
from cars often rise at these locations during the summer months. When
you go out in the car, only take what you need and try to carry your
property with you when you leave the car. Where ever you park your car,
please don’t leave property unattended. Wallets, handbags, lap-tops,
cameras, Satellite Navigation Systems and CDs are a thief’s popular
choice. At home, where possible, it is advisable to garage vehicles when
not in use. Away from home think about a safe parking location. Are there
passers by who would spot suspicious activity? If you are not returning
until after dark, is the location well lit? !"#$%&#'()#$*+,-.)$/0)*1)$,-1-'$'()$2)3$4'*%%"#+1(-#)$5"0-.)$3)61-')$*'$

How To Make a scarecrow Now that you are sowing lots of vegetable crops, why not make a scarecrow to frighten away birds from the new plants as they start to grow?
What you'll need
1 sturdy stick or bamboo cane, about 2m long
2 1 sturdy stick or bamboo cane, about 1m long
3 1 sturdy stick or bamboo cane, about 30cm long
4 Old clothes – shirt or jumper, trousers, hat
5 Old pair of tights
6 String
7 Straw or leaves
What to do Make a frame
1. Tie tightly the 1m stake to the 2m stake about 15cm from one end, in a cross shape and then tie
the other stake in the same way about half way down. This is the frame for your scarecrow.
2. Make a head
1. Cut one leg from the tights and fill with some straw.
2. Push the straw firmly to the end and make it into a head shape. Tie a piece of string around the
tights to stop the straw from falling out.
3. Paint a funny or scary face on it; you could make some glasses and maybe a beard.
4. Now tie the head on to the top of the frame.
Dress your scarecrow
1. Placing a shirt on the top crossbar and the trousers on the smaller bar is the standard scarecrow
design but you can clothe your scarecrow as you wish.
2. Tie off the bottom of the legs of the trousers with string and stuff them with straw or leaves.
3. Button up the shirt and tie the ends of the arms then stuff the sleeves with straw or leaves.
4. Push some straw under the hat and leave it dangling out to look like hair.
5. You can design your scarecrow to look like a favourite book or film character.

Saturday & Sunday 11th and 12th June 2016
NOT LONG TO GO NOW ………!
It’s not too late to enter a Scarecrow.
Just let me know it you are entering and I can put you on the Trail List. PLEASE let me know a.s.a.p. either via telephone or email, your name and address. (Obviously I will not be putting
anyone’s name or address in the programme just an indication on the particular road) Let’s see if we can make even more Scarecrows than 2014 The programmes - with a map included - will be for sale from the village hall and Church and this will make it easier for visitors to tour the village.
Don’t forget to visit the new Art Exhibition in the Village Hall and a new Photographic Exhibition in the Church – both courtesy of the Stone & District U3A and refreshments as usual at the ‘Scarecrow Café’
Prize giving on Sunday at 4.30 pm in the Village Hall.
Do come to the special ‘Scarecrow Service’ at 11.15 am on Sunday 12th June. You can come as a Scarecrow, bring a Scarecrow or just come as you are! Remember the Scarecrow Weekend is a fun event so just have a go …. !

Hilderstone Parish Council Wind turbine Application at Drumble Woods The Secretary of State has agreed with the Planning Inspector’s conclusions and recommendation; has dismissed the appeal by the developer and refuses planning permission for the turbine. Please note that this decision may be challenged within six weeks by application to the High Court. The Parish Council should be notified if a legal challenge to the decision is made. Village Publicity Volunteer Required In order to keep Hilderstone on ‘the map’ and a volunteer is required to co-ordinate publicity for village activities, events and facilities. This will require somebody who can not only send information to the various agencies, but also be available in the village to meet with press photographers etc. where there is a photo opportunity. If you are willing to take on this role, please contact the Parish Clerk in the first instance. Contact details at the front of the Magazine or on the Hilderstone Village Website. Village Hall Contacts. A polite reminder that the Parish Council is not responsible for the running of the village hall. There is a separate Village Hall Committee and booking secretary to which all enquiries about the hall should be directed. The contact details are: Hall Bookings and information about the general facilities available: Telephone: 07810 332559 or Email: [email protected] Any other village hall enquiries or problems to report: Telephone Jenny Crump on 01889 505674 or Email: [email protected] Help Hilderstone Win the Best Kept Village Competition 2016! householders are being asked to have a hanging basket or flower tub at the front of their house as part of the competition efforts, but also to increase the overall attractiveness of our village. The Best Kept Village volunteer team have worked hard to maintain many of the public areas including regular Saturday morning sessions in the Churchyard. Please support their efforts by picking up any litter that you pass when walking around the village; sadly a great deal is thrown from cars passing through the village. If you live near to one of the public flower boxes in the village it would be very helpful if you could water it in dry periods to keep the displays in good condition. We hope that you will enjoy the fabulous children’s posters on display in the bus shelters again this year. These have been created by the class two pupils of Green Lea School and other children that live in Hilderstone but attend different schools. Stafford Town Centre The next phase of main sewer replacement works along Beaconside and Weston Road which should have started in May, will continue through out the summer. This is likely to cause severe traffic congestion at peak times and drivers are advised to avoid these areas if possible. Updates on the works can be found on the following site: https://www.stwater.co.uk/my-supplies/in-my-area/investing-in-local-improvements/were-investing-in-stafford In line with Government policy all local planning authorities are required to deliver a particular number of new houses in a specified period. Details of The New Plan for Stafford Borough which covers the period from 2011-2031 can be found at: http://www.staffordbc.gov.uk/theplanforstaffordborough
Hilderstone Heritage, Part Fifteen.
In February 1952 an article appeared in the Stone Guardian
under its regular ‘Personality Parade’ feature. The subject was
Mr Thomas Houldcroft Shelley, better known as Tom,
Landlord of the Bird in Hand. He is described as “a
personality, a small military-like figure with the military
moustache and one only has to see him walk down Stone’s
High Street and hear ‘Good Morning Tom’ from all sides to
realise his popularity.
Tom was born at the Bird in Hand, as was his father,
grandfather and great-grandfather before him, and there was
a proud family tradition that there had always been a Shelley
at the Bird [the earliest extant record shows a Jas Shelley in
1834, but 1819 is quoted by ‘Staffordshire Past’]. Most famous
was Tom’s Great-Grandmother [Ellen Shelley] who used to sit
in a corner of the bar with a long bean stick and would give an
occasional whack to any local who looked like getting out of
hand!
The Bird also had a small brewery whose products were
distributed as far as the Potteries, Cheadle and Burston. The
Initials TH [Shelley] were passed through some of the
generations so that the name on the beer barrels, stone beer
jars and beer bottle labels would not need to be changed
[Brewing, which is known to have begun in 1750, ceased on
27th December 1927].
Tom served in the First World War and was wounded on the
Somme. It was whist convalescing in Leicester that he
became interested in sheep dogs. This in time led to him
becoming one of the foremost authorities on sheep dogs in
North Staffordshire; and he bred both border collies and
terriers. He also runs a small dairy farm attached to the Bird.
Tom makes time to serve as a Rural District Councillor and a
Parish Councillor, and was one time Chairman of the Parish
Council”.
[Unfortunately Tom and his wife, Mary/May, did not have any
children so the ‘Shelley Tradition’ sadly came to an end. Tom
passed away in 1954. May continued as licensee until her
retirement in 1970].
The above article led to a fascinating letter the following week
from a Miss C L [Lilly] Smith of Whitelow Brooks:
“The warmth and hospitality of the Bird holds happy memories
for many, but a few of us have memories of a different kind
whenever the Bird is mentioned.
During the war years 1940 [sic] – 1945 many hours have we
paced up and down in a half-asleep state outside the Bird in a
an effort to keep warm; or found shelter behind its walls from
rain or wind at 5.30am on morning shifts, which in reality was
3.30am (Double Summertime) waiting for the Royal Ordnance
Factory bus to take us to Swynnerton.
How good it was on the return journeys from night shifts to
know we were getting near home when the driver shouted
‘Wake up girls! Here is the Bird’”.
COUNTRYSIDE WATCHER – JUNE HEDGE WOUNDWORT
Spring is over; the Cuckoo has been heard in the lane. Now it is June, the beginning of Summer. The hedges are turning green again as the white May blossom begins to fade. The trees are in full leaf. New winged seeds hang on the Sycamore branches. The branched flower heads on the Elder trees are covered in creamy white flowers.
Where the verges are trimmed there are still flowers in bloom at the back, under the hedges. I stop to look at masses of lovely red, wine coloured flowers, Hedge Woundworts. These flowers grow tall, from twenty to forty-eight inches. The Greek name is ‘Stachys sylvatica. ‘Stachys’ comes from the Greek word for ‘ear of corn’, because the flowers look like corn. However, the common name, ‘Woundwort’, is very significant because, according to legends, the plants have had healing properties in our country since the 16
th century. They have
also been known as healing plants since the days of the ancient Greeks. They are old medicinal herbs used to treat wounds and to stop bleeding. Often the green parts of the plants were used to make a poultice. Leaves were also used to make ointments and infusions. Flowers were made into jams. There are some early medical works that are all about the uses of Woundwort and its relation, Betony. These flowers were thought of as almost universal ‘cure-alls’. Modern experiments have confirmed that Hedge Woundworts do have a mild antiseptic quality.
Hedge Woundworts are vigorous flowers, growing on square, tough, hairy, solid, creeping stems. The hairy leaves are stalked, pointed, toothed and heart-shaped, growing in opposite pairs on the stems. When bruised or cut the leaves have an unpleasant smell. The dark reddish-purple flowers grow in whorls up the stem. They have hairy upper and lower lips and grow to around half an inch. The white blotches on the flowers guide Bees looking for pollen to the nectar in the flowers.
Hedge Woundworts are like Marsh Woundworts, similar flowers that have creeping, hollow stems. Their leaves are spear-shaped and the flowers a dark purple. As the name says this flower grows in marshes and other wet places.
I stand and smile at the masses of spreading stems bearing the beautiful, tiny, red flowers of delightful Hedge Woundworts. Yes, summer is really here.

The Scarecrow
All winter through I bow my head
beneath the driving rain;
the North Wind powders me with snow
and blows me black again;
at midnight 'neath a maze of stars
I flame with glittering rime,
and stand above the stubble, stiff
as mail at morning-prime.
But when that child called Spring, and all
his host of children come,
scattering their buds and dew upon
these acres of my home,
some rapture in my rags awakes;
I lift void eyes and scan
the sky for crows, those ravening foes,
of my strange master, Man.
I watch him striding lank behind
his clashing team, and know
soon will the wheat swish body high
where once lay a sterile snow;
soon I shall gaze across a sea
of sun-begotten grain,
which my unflinching watch hath sealed
for harvest once again.
