Coffee Morning in aid of Nepal Earthquake Victims
13th June at The Roebuck Hilderstone 10am – 12am
The aim is to raise funds for the rural areas which to date have received
no aid. We have contact with an orphanage in the Lalitpur region which
has been funded by generous Stafford people over the recent years.
Whilst damage to the orphanage is small, the neighbouring villages are
suffering badly. Emergency aid raised by these Stafford people is
channelled directly to these villages by means of the members of the
orphanage team. For more details of the orphanage and the devastation
of the local area it serves please take time to visit the Hilderstone Village

sent by the Orphanage team. Any help in the form of donations of cakes
etc. and of course your presence at the coffee morning will be most

The Vicar writes: A brief guide to churches and the Church of England An occasional series to help you understand churchspeak. A word that occurs quite frequently in ‘churchspeak’ is Diocese. For those in the know it trips off the tongue very readily, but to others it has no clear meaning. I think that the closest equivalence in daily life is the County. In a dictionary a Diocese is a name given to ‘the territorial unit of administration in the church. In Roman Catholic usage a diocese is defined as ‘a portion of the people of God entrusted for pastoral care to a bishop’, but in Anglican use it is firmly territorial. A point of confusion can be that not every Bishop has a Diocese. These Bishops can be Area or Suffragan or Assistant Bishops. To use our Diocese of Lichfield as an example, the Bishop of Lichfield heads the Diocese which then is divided into 3 Areas, each with a Bishop. (Stafford, Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury). And there is a further Bishop, Rt Rev’d David Bentley, who is a retired Bishop, who can help out. Diocesan Bishops are eligible to take on national responsibilities by taking a seat in the House of Lords. This privilege is given to the most senior 24 of the 42 Diocesan Bishops. Bishop Jonathan took his seat in 2009, and will relinquish it when he retires. . So what does the Diocese of Lichfield look like? It serves an area of 1744 square miles (from the Welsh border to the River Dove; from the Cheshire border to the old Staffordshire border now in the West Midlands) that comprises 427 parishes with 583 churches. There are 275 paid clergy and over 500 people who are authorized voluntary ministers. It costs around £20 million per year to maintain its ministry. Lichfield is one of the largest 5 Dioceses in the country.

The Bishop of Lichfield has responsibility for a considerable number of people and a pay roll equivalent to a considerable sized company. You may be aware that our current Bishop of Lichfield, Jonathan Gledhill is retiring at the end of September. Very soon the process of seeking a successor will begin. This will need to bring together people’s views on the challenges that face the Diocese and the attributes of a potential successor. The process is organized and run by the Archbishop’s and the Prime Minister’s Appointments Secretaries. These two people would like to hear from you as they cast a net far and wide in their task. Probably the three most important questions are: a) What are the main challenges/ concerns that face us as a Diocese? b) What are the main priorities for the church in the Diocese of Lichfield in the next 10 years? c) What are the qualities you would like to see in your new Diocesan Bishop? If you would like to respond to the questions or make any other comment, you can do so in two ways. You can write your responses and send them to the Bishop of Stafford either by e-mail or in a sealed envelope marked for the attention of the Appointments Secretaries and sent to the Bishop’s Office. Christ Church is an Open Church During the summer months Christ Church is open on Saturdays from 10 am until dusk, and on Sundays from 12.30 until dusk. Do go in and look around, or go in and reflect and pray. It’s your church, do make use of it. Thank you to the churchyard team. They are back for another season, for which we are very grateful. We hope that it will make a difference in the eyes of the judges for the Best Kept Village. Eric Stubbs Eric Stubbs was born into a farming family at Tixall. He cycled to school in Stafford each day and was not averse to an odd schoolboy prank or two.. Farming was Eric’s chosen way of life, and for entertainment Eric loved parties and dancing. Eric met Amy through dancing, and they married at Fulford . The family moved to Dayhills in 1964, and continue to farm there. Eric and Amy lived at High View, from where there is a good view of the churchyard where Eric is now interred. Our sympathies are extended to Amy and all the family in their loss.

Please keep in mind that if you don’t open the door to strangers or deal with cold callers over the phone or at
the door, you can’t be the victim of such crime.
If you need work doing around the home or garden, try to find
a tradesperson recommended by friends or family, or use the Traders Register, who have a directory of local tradespeople
who have signed up to the register voluntarily and agree that
Trading Standards can arbitrate if there is a problem with their
work. Never be rushed into agreeing to work being done - try
to get at least three quotes from reputable companies and beware, ‘special offers! that are only available on the day.
Beware pressure sales and try to pay by credit card, which gives you extra safeguards. Don!t keep lots of cash in the house
and think twice about anyone who only accepts cash payments.
Be wary of unexpected callers. If a caller hasn!t made an
appointment, tell them to go away and write to you to make an
appointment to visit at a later date. Don!t be tricked by the
‘Waterboard! caller. Around 50% of distraction burglars claim to
be from the Waterboard, but Water officials very rarely need
access to a house. It!s just an easy excuse for a criminal to
scare a resident into allowing access by purporting that there is a problem with the water. Bogus callers can claim to be from
other agencies as well. There have already been incidents this
year where callers have purported to be from the council and in
the past they have also claimed to be from other agencies including gas, electric, even the police!
Be wary of any caller who wants to come into the house or
wants you to step outside – excuses are numerous and include
purporting to need help, to use the phone or toilet, to have a

Best Kept Village
As you will read elsewhere in the Parish Magazine villagers’ support is needed for the BKV competition. It requires everyone to make a
contribution to show the judges that we have pride in our village. If we
are to do better than Highly Commended we have to up our game in ensuring every fine detail of village life gets attention. Reading in the
Stone Gazette what other villages - for example Oulton and Barlaston
Community Group - are setting out to do is very commendable. Hopton
and Salt were last year’s winner. Just have a ride out and see what they do in their villages. This is not just for BKV competition but to show
people travelling through, residents and visitors that we have pride in
our village. The judges’ comments from last year are on our Village Website. Do not just rely on the Parish Council and Bill Holmes to
make the additional improvements; the rules are such the effort has to
be seen as the whole community taking part.
Speedwatch
I have been informed today that the surveillance due to take place in
May will be the last unless a new co-ordinator takes over from Richard Pilcher who is now standing down. Richard and his team have been
excellent over the last two years in providing a presence in the village
helping to curb speeding traffic. The data that has been collected is invaluable in informing the Police & Crime Commissioner, Staffordshire
& County Council Highways that we need to have other means of
controlling the volume and speed of traffic through Hilderstone.
Would everyone who shows concern for the problems relating to speed
please give thought to carrying on this activity and become the Co-
ordinator.

Honey Oat Yummies
To make 20 yummies you will need
Ingredients
4 ounces margarine 4 ounces caster sugar
2 eggs 8 ounces self raising flour
2 large teaspoons of set honey 2 ounces porridge oats
Method
Put the margarine, honey and sugar into a bowl and mix well together.
Put in the eggs and mix again. Sieve the flour into the bowl with the oats and mix very carefully until the flour and oats are all mixed in.

little, to allow for spreading during cooking and cook at gas 4 for about 15 minutes
Hilderstone Parish Council 2015 Parish & Borough Elections As Hilderstone Parish was uncontested (i.e. there were the same number of nominations as councillor vacancies) there was no poll on 7th May. The current parish councillors will therefore continue serve Hilderstone Parish Council. Full contact details for all of the Parish Councillors are available on the Hilderstone Village website. In the Stafford Borough elections Councillor Andrew Harp was elected along with Councillor Frances Beatty to represent the Milwich Ward. Help Hilderstone Win the Best Kept Village Competition 2015! As the village has come second and third in the past, there is still a good chance of winning. The village will be judged again in June and July, so please continue to maintain your front garden to the highest standard. All householders are being asked to have a hanging basket or flower tub at the front of their house as part of the competition efforts, but also to increase the overall attractiveness of our village. The Best Kept Village volunteer team have worked hard to maintain many of the public areas including regular Saturday morning sessions in the Churchyard. Please support their efforts by picking up any litter that you pass when walking around the village; sadly a great deal is thrown from cars passing through the village. If you live near to one of the public flower boxes in the village it would be very helpful if you could water it in dry periods to keep the displays in good condition. We hope that you will enjoy the fabulous children’s posters on display in the bus shelters again this year. These have been created by the class one and two pupils of Green Lea School.

COUNTRYSIDE WATCHER JUNE CASCADE OF ELDER FLOWERS
June is a green month. There is a sweet smell of new-mown grass in the lane. It is the smell that lingers in the air when Sweet Vernal grass is cut. The Council mowers cut the grassy verges at the beginning of the month. They cut a strip from the lane edge, the width of the council mowers, leaving a stretch of grass, as is the rule, up to the hedge or ditch. Green trees overhang the drumble and meet to form an overhead shade. On sunny days the sun casts dappled, lace-like shadows on the lane surface. The design changes as the breeze rustles through the leaves. The drumble can be a magical place.
In the lane the bush-shaped Elders are in flower, their sweet-smelling flowers shining like stars. Clusters of the creamy white, scented flowers cascade down from the top branches to the bottom. They create a green and white flowery curtain.
Elders do grow into small trees but in the lane, they to love to grow wild and merge into the hedgerows as bushes. They flourish best in places where people used to live, such as abandoned cottage gardens, where the soil has been enriched by the breakdown of refuse matter. The bush branches grow upright from ground level, and then bend and droop over. The bud at the top of the bend grows upwards and this continues until the Elder is a mass of upward growing branches. On these branches, five or seven stalk-less leaflets grow opposite each other, attached to a centre stem. The leaves are dull green above and hairy underneath.
At the branch ends, millions of small, creamy-white flowers form a sweet scented flat head. In Autumn, when juicy, purple-black berries hang in ‘dupes’, or heavy bunches, the heads then droop. Birds love Elderberries. Often, a flock of birds will swoop down and strip a tree. Berries eaten, the birds, in flight, drop the uneaten seeds. So the Elders are spread.
The white flowers, when picked in the sun, make superb white wine. Purple berries make a good red wine. Jams can also be made. Once, the flowers were used to make tea. It was used as a cough remedy, sometimes with a drop of honey in it. Now it is a herbal tea. The flowers were once used to produce blue or lilac dyes. From the yellow-white, hard Elder wood, small objects, such as toys, combs, wooden spoons, whistles and peashooters, may be made.

Green Lea First School, Milwich
Choosing the right school for your child is a difficult
decision. As a community governor of the school for a
number of years, I can only say that if my
grandchildren lived in Hilderstone, Milwich or
surrounding villages I would have no hesitation in
advising their parents to send them there.
Green Lea School offers an environment where children
learn in an encouraging environment. They have the
opportunity to take part in Book Week activities,
explore the outside world, enter dance competitions and
sporting activities. The Green Lea pupil is a well
rounded individual with loads of confidence. Pupils at
the school make good progress in all areas of the
curriculum. Green Lea First School provides them with
the basics to do well in their next school.
Another reason for considering the school is that there is
“wrap round cover” where before school and after
school care is available. The youngsters enjoy a wide
range of out of school activities and they have the
opportunity to try all kinds of sports and skills.

Information for Hiring Hilderstone Village Hall
With effect from June 1st 2015 it will be a set fee for all of the
facilities of the hall, which are as follows:
Hilderstone Residents: £15.00 per hour
Non Residents: £19.00 per hour
We can also offer special rates for Parties, and regular users of
the village hall. Please feel free to discuss with the booking
secretary what your requirements are.

Christ Church is an Open Church During the summer months Christ Church is open on Saturdays from 10 am until dusk, and on Sundays from 12.30 until dusk. Do go in and look around, or go in and reflect and pray. It’s your church, do make use of it. Thank you to the churchyard team. They are back for another season, for which we are very grateful. We hope that it will make a difference in the eyes of the judges for the Best Kept Village. Eric Stubbs Eric Stubbs was born into a farming family at Tixall. He cycled to school in Stafford each day and was not averse to an odd schoolboy prank or two.. Farming was Eric’s chosen way of life, and for entertainment Eric loved parties and dancing. Eric met Amy through dancing, and they married at Fulford . The family moved to Dayhills in 1964, and continue to farm there. Eric and Amy lived at High View, from where there is a good view of the churchyard where Eric is now interred. Our sympathies are extended to Amy and all the family in their loss.
