FORWARD AND STEWARDSHIPRob Blackwell, Church AdministratorOctober is traditionally the month where we have an annual stewardship campaign, and sometimes a capital campaign along with it. This year, we just seek to remind you of our FORWARD initiative and how that relates to stewardship. Last year, when we introduced FORWARD, along with the concept of the Giving Ladder, we asked everyone to take a step up the ladder when prayerfully considering their giving to the church. The goal is to act in obedience to God’s word and give at a tithe (10%) or above, while acknowledging that it may take more than one step to get there. While we may not have a full-fledged campaign this year, it is an opportune time to reflect on the commitment you made last year to FORWARD and recommit if you’re behind or to make a commitment now if you haven’t done so. One of the things to keep in mind about giving is that it has a double benefit. The main one is that it brings us into a closer relationship with God as the act of giving turns our hearts toward Him. As we do so and He blesses us, it empowers us to bless others even more. The second benefit is that it enables the ministry of the church to continue and grow. While giving is primarily a spiritual act of obedience and relationship, a practical aspect is that the church has expenses and doing ministry costs money. Christ UMC cannot do the wonderful work that it does without funds to hold Sunday services, operate youth and children’s ministries, offer a multitude of outreach and missions ministries, pay staff, pay the electric bill, etc. So please use the month of October to pray about stewardship and giving. For more information on FORWARD and for help in thinking through the process of making a commitment, take a look at christumcmobile.com/forward or contact me or Patricia at the church office.

OCTOBER 2015THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNDAMENTALSJeff Spiller, Senior Pastor As football season gets into full swing, we’re once again hearing football coaches speak about the importance of fundamentals. You know, the fundamental, basic and important things we must do in order to be successful! You can’t exhaust an extensive and complicated playbook unless you’re having success blocking

and tackling. I’m amazed at how all of us try to move forward to the next play in life without first mastering some of the fundamentals. Or we get sloppy and forgetful when it comes to remembering the key fundamentals of life.

What would your list of life’s basic fundamentals look like? Here is mine:

n Remember daily how much God loves you and He knows what’s best for your life!

n Remember daily that God has given you everything you have including life itself, so be thankful and humble! We haven’t earned anything.

n Love God and tell Him so! Make weekly worship and daily prayer a priority.

n Love your neighbor! Do a little something for someone else each day. You will both be surprised how good it feels!

n Be Generous! Generous with your time, talent, energy, and money. You can’t take any of these things to Heaven.

n Hug and forgive your family and friends TODAY! One of you might not be around tomorrow.

These are important fundamentals to me. I hope they are helpful to you! Pray for me that I will live them out every day. In Christ,

Jim Kinder, NewSong PastorThe water is flowing freely in Gnangoussou!

Through the Water for Life Initiative, we are fulfilling the call of Christ to be His witnesses throughout "Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth."

On Friday, September 4th, a team of ten people left from Mobile with a great sendoff! It was 32 hours before we finally landed in the capital city of Côte d’Ivoire to a warm welcome from Jean Claude and Francine Masuka, missionaries who would be our guides in the country. We were exhausted but their excitement was contagious. The next day was Sunday and off we headed to worship! We split up and went to three churches. Along the way, we had to push the bus out of a sand pit and dodge a goat herd. It almost compared to getting through our parking lot on a Sunday!

On Monday, we toured villages in what many would call "the bush" of Côte d’Ivoire. We paraded through the village to a gathering area where four ladies performed a ritual tribal dance for us. A number of people gave reports regarding the effectiveness of Imagine No Malaria—a campaign in which the United Methodist Church is highly involved. Of the 70,000 people in the surrounding areas, half of them had malaria. Since the

beginning of Imagine No Malaria, those numbers have dropped to less than 18,000 cases of malaria. United Methodists are making a huge difference in this area!

Over the next few days, we led leadership training for 50 headmasters of local Methodist schools and inspected the well in Gnangoussou to see if it needed any work before the grand opening on Saturday. Along the way, we were able to see the largest Catholic Church in the world! We met a local missionary who is planting churches among mainly—Muslim tribes. We were able to pray for and with him and his ministry.

We all arrived in Gnangoussou on Thursday of the trip. We were excited to see the church and the well that we had been dreaming of for months. But, we were more excited to meet the wonderful people who live in the village. An evangelism team was already working with the youth in the village when we arrived. So we partnered with them to distribute food and clothing, not only to Gnangoussou, but also to surrounding villages.

On Friday, Dan Roach worked with a team from the Methodist Hospital in Dabou to run a medical clinic. They tested many people for diabetes and thankfully, only a few tested positive. While they were in the clinic, the rest of us had some time to connect with the villagers by meeting them and playing with the children. That evening, we were hosted by Bishop Boni

(who many of you remember from his visit to Christ UMC) for dinner. We got to hear many stories of the great work of God happening in the Ivory Coast. We even got to meet five elderly women who are instrumental in building a new church that will seat over one thousand people! We prayed with them and asked God to bless their efforts.

On Saturday morning, we awoke very excited! This is the day we had been waiting for—the dedication of the church and the well! Tents were set up to accommodate the crowds and the services began with a processional to the church building. Even though the church and well were constructed and ready for use, the village waited for us to arrive and dedicate them before they even stepped inside or poured the first glass of clean water. There was a ribbon cutting where the village chief and I

held the ribbon tight across the door and Bishop Boni cut the ribbon. The door was opened and the Bishop went in first to pray alone. Afterwards, he invited our team to go in and open the windows, preparing the way for the people to enter. We all left the building and formed a processional to re-enter and have everyone take their place. We couldn't fit everyone into the new building! It was standing room only and a few people were outside, watching through the windows. For the service, a number of people spoke and were very thankful for our support. I was able to thank the people for allowing us to partner with them in ministry and told them how their faith

and work for the Lord encourages us in our work for the Lord. Bishop Boni's message was very direct. He asked the lay leader to stand as he challenged the whole church. He challenged them first to take care of the property. Second, he told them in five years, they needed to plant another

Cont'd from page 3

Page 5: Christ UMC - October 2015

5

church in another village. Third, he challenged them to have a project for their church. A project for them is defined as a way that the church can earn money to help support itself and future church plants. Bishop Boni is not interested in handouts and really encouraged the church to learn to support itself. The service began at 9:30 a.m. and lasted until 1:00 p.m.—just a little longer than a typical Christ UMC service! After sharing a meal with the village, we started our journey back to the capital.

On Sunday morning, we divided into different groups so that we could worship at three different churches. John Russell, Tom Grafton and I had the privilege of preaching at the different churches. Earl McKinnell went to the church where Tom spoke. He was able to meet the Methodist Chaplain for prisons and hospitals. In the late 1990's, the Chaplain served as the Pastor of Jacqueville UMC and was responsible for villages in that area—including Gnangoussou. At the time, he actually had family living in Gnangoussou. He told Earl that he dreamed of planting a church in Gnangoussou but did not know how he would be able to do it. "Today," he said, "you have made my dreams come true."

Bishop Boni met with us one last time to thank us again for the partnership of our church with the United Methodist Church in Côte d’Ivoire. One of the most amazing things I saw was in Gnangoussou when we first arrived. I saw a stone monument that was engraved with the date November 14, 2014. It was there on that day that Jean Claude first trusted God for a new church in that village. This was months before we started the Water for Life Initiative. God has shown our church that when we come together as one, guided by His vision, we can impact a community in a powerful, eternal way. We can join with God's plan of redemption for the whole world if we simply trust Him and step out boldly, willing to serve wherever He leads us.

And if we can do that in a place thousands of miles away, what can our church do in a community where we speak the same language, go to the same stores and work in the same places? Gnangoussou is just a beginning. Our journey with God continues. n

By Rick Warren - For more information, visit danielplan.com The Bible says, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15 NIV). One of the things you’re learning in your efforts to become Daniel Strong is that real change requires you to face the truth. Behind every self-defeating behavior is a lie we believe, such as, “I can trust any food that is labeled ‘healthy,’ ‘all natural,’ ‘diet,’ or ‘fat free.’” Changing eating habits begins with developing discernment. If a food is labeled “healthy” but has 20 ingredients, 19 of which you can’t pronounce, that label is lying. Educate yourself about what is truly healthy food, like fresh vegetables, lean meat, nuts, and fruit. While it may seem confusing at first, it is really quite simple to eat healthy. Once you learn to recognize lying labels, you’ll feel empowered to make the best choices for your body. God wants you to “use your head—and heart—to discern what is right, to test what is authentically right.” (John 7:24 MSG)

WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTHY FOODS, USE YOUR HEAD!

By Mike Rollins, MIddle School Minister When I lived in Virginia, October would be the beginning of my favorite time of year. Autumn meant jumping in big piles of leaves, wearing long shirts and carving pumpkins with family. It meant the trees would start changing and become full of beautiful red, orange, brown and yellow leaves and when hit by the sun's rays, they would take my breath away. The weather would get less humid and more crisp! After moving to Alabama, it meant the beginning of football season.

Every time the seasons change from Summer to Autumn, I am reminded how God makes everything beautiful and new. He takes trees, which I just pass by every day, and makes them so their beauty can take my breath away. What I find truly amazing is that the God that can make trees beautiful, that made everything in our universe, loves us. Not only loves us, but wants to make us beautiful and new, no matter what we have done.

So every time you see the leaves change, or feel the crispness of the air in the morning, remember how much God loves us. Remember that every day he is making us beautiful and new.

By Jon Seale, Elementary Minister God really shows how wonderful He is when we look at everything He created. One of the activities we do to teach the children this is to grab a piece of paper and as many crayons, markers and colored pencils as they can find. We tell them to take a moment and be as creative as they want to be. They can color, draw or just scribble. The main thing is just to create something. Each child’s work is unique. We do this again with a second sheet of paper. Everything is different again. Art activities are fun because the children get to express their beauty. Hopefully some of these masterpieces are on your refrigerator at home! Now just think of how creative God was when He made the world and everything in it. God expresses His beauty through His creation, especially us. We were made one-of-a-kind exactly the way He wants us to be. We are all different but He brings us all together. We should all be thankful for our differences and love each other always.

Christ UMC’s Christian Cancer Support Group will host Kathryn Burnham, author of Finding Christ in Cancer, offering hope to cancer patients and their families.

“Discovering that you or a loved one has cancer can be devastating and frightening. In this dark season of your life, it may seem like there is nothing left but despair. However, just as some flowers only bloom in the dead of winter, you can find beauty in the midst of your trial. Finding Christ in Cancer will point you to Christ, who is your hope when life seems hopeless. While the Bible is your ultimate guidebook through all circumstances in life, Finding Christ in Cancer is an additional resource for

the cancer patient and his or her support group. From answers to common medical questions to devotions centered on trials and suffering, this book will give Biblical encouragement through the tough cancer journey.” - Excerpt from Finding Christ in Cancer.

Kathryn Burnham, a physician’s assistant and author has written Finding Christ in Cancer: A Guidebook and Devotional for people fighting cancer and those who love them. She will be presenting her book and answering questions at our October meeting. For more information, contact Teresa Atkins at 251.367.8395.
