PRAYING FOR PEACE AND REPARATION
We invite you to stay at the end of Sunday Mass following
the closing hymn and join us in praying three “Hail
Mary’s” for Peace: in our World, in our Families and in our
Hearts. We also pray the Prayer to St. Michael the
Archangel, for healing and reparation in our Church.
SACRAMENTS
Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on
Sundays at 12:30 PM. A PreBaptism class is required for
both parents prior to the Baptism of their first child.
Register with the Parish Office: 203.775.1035.
Marriage Weddings generally are celebrated on Friday
evening or Saturday afternoons and must be scheduled at
least six months in advance. Please do not make final
arrangements for your reception prior to contacting the
Parish Office.
R.C.I.A. Interested in becoming a Catholic? Call the
Parish Office.
“GLUTENFREE” HOSTS
St. Joseph Church has a limited supply of lowgluten
communion hosts available for those with a gluten allergy
(not dietary preference). While often referred to as “gluten
free,” the hosts actually contain 0.01% gluten in order to
conform to liturgical standards. Please advise a priest or
deacon before Mass if you wish to receive the lowgluten
host.
IMPORTANT HOSPITAL INFORMATION
Parishioners entering Danbury Hospital as patients are
urged to contact the St. Joseph Parish Office (203)775
1035 if they wish to be visited by a member of St. Joseph’s
clergy during their stay. Hospital chaplains will continue to
visit patients who identify themselves as Catholic when be-
ing admitted.

TH
SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Finding our place in Joseph’s
story
You had every intention of doing it.
You’d thought it all out, weighed
pros and cons, and made your deci-
sion. It was reasonable, practical. Family and friends were behind you
all the way. But then something happened. A dream, a phone call, a
look from a stranger on the bussomething that maybe wasn’t even
related to your decision, but it spoke to you. It said: Don’t do that, do
this instead. And all these years later, you can’t even explain it to your-
self. Only that you trusted your intuition, and you’d do the same thing
today.
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 7:1014; Romans 1:17; Matthew 1:18
24 (10). “Joseph her husband . . . decided to divorce her quietly. Such
was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream.”

JOHN OF KANTY, PRIEST
Rising above sin and division
Today is the memorial of John of Kanty. A 15thcentury Polish scholar
and priest, he was known for his simple lifestyle and generosity to the
poor. He had enemies, however, who schemed to have him demoted
from professor at the University of Krakow to parish priest (a job he
felt unprepared for). It took him years to win over his flock, but even-
tually he did, and eventually he was reinstated as a professor. Sin and
division within the Church caused harm to John of Kanty, yet he per-
sisted in living a good life. Take a moment to draw hope from people
you know who persist in living generously and lovingly in today’s im-
perfect Church.
TODAY'S READINGS: Malachi 3:14, 2324; Luke 1:5766 (199). “O
Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: Come to save us, Lord our
God!”

SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD
Hope is born!
Saint Augustine wrote these beautiful words describing the Incarnation
of Jesus: “God so loved us that for our sakes He, through whom time
was made, was made in time. Older by eternity than the world itself,
He became younger in age than many of His servants in the world.
God, who made man, was made man. He was given existence by a
mother whom He brought into existence. He was carried in hands
which He formed; He was nursed at breasts which He filled. He cried
like a baby in the manger in speechless infancythis Word without
which human eloquence is speechless.” Let us rejoice in a God who
loves to use what’s small and meek to accomplish great things. Merry
Christmas!

Two thousand years ago or so, a child was
born in Bethlehem to an impoverished young
couple. Mary and Joseph both knew that
there was something very special about this
child but to the world He was simply another
mouth to feed.
When they brought Him to the Temple
there was a holy and righteous man waiting at
the Temple gates. The old man’s name was
Simeon. Upon beholding the child he said,
Lord, you may now let your servant go in
peace; your word has been fulfilled. I have
seen the light of the nations and the glory of
your people. This child is destined to be the
rise and fall of many people. Simeon knew
that the Savior promised of old had come and
now he could rest in peace.
This Christmas let us all recognize the
Savior in our own lives and find the peace He
came to bring us. Let us allow the joy of this
season to continue to transform our lives
throughout the coming year.
God Bless and may you have a Holy and
Blessed Christmas.

STEPHEN, FIRST MARTYR
Let the children lead the way
In religious art, Saint Stephen, first martyr and one of the first seven
deacons in the church, is pictured as a very young man. He must have
taken to the new Christian faith in a big way, because despite his youth
he was already said to be filled with the Holy Spirit and a miracle
worker. Look around our world today. Once again we find deeply com-
mitted young people, not only animating the Church through events
such as Youth Day, but taking the lead on many of the most pressing
issues of global concern, such as change. Lend an ear to what young
people in your life are sayingyou may find some ageless wisdom
there!
TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 6:810; 7:5459; Matthew 10:1722
(696). “They could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with
which he spoke.”

JOHN, APOSTLE, EVANGELIST
Testify with your life
Sometimes a platoon of veterans will get together every five years,
until their numbers dwindle to a few lone survivors. Or a group of
college girlfriends will have an annual reunionuntil one is left with
no one else to reunite with. John the evangelist, a.k.a., the beloved
disciple, was said to have outlived all the other apostles. Perhaps it felt
lonelyor perhaps it drove him to spend every last day recounting and
recording for posterity the incredible events that he witnessed
firsthand. Keep your eyes open and pen at handGod is at work in
your own life and you are the living testament!
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 1:14; John 20:1a, 28 (697). “We
have seen it and testify to it.”

THE HOLY INNOCENTS, MARTYRS
Children first
The Holy Innocents’ only crime was that they were the same age as the
baby Jesus. The local king, Herod, was a jealous man who had few
scruples about killing people. When he heard that wise men from the
east were en route to honor a newborn king, Herod was beside him-
self. He demanded that they tell him where he also could “honor” this
baby king. When they ignored him, Herod did the unthinkable and
ordered that all of Bethlehem’s male babies and toddlers be put to
death. Say a prayer today for the children of our world who have had
their innocence robbed from them through war, grinding poverty, or
abuse. Let their protection be our highest priority.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 1:52:2; Matthew 2:1318 (698). “A
cry was heard at Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation: Rachel be-
wailing her children.”

The Christmas Story
Luke 2: 114
I
n those days a decree went out
from Caesar Augustus that the
whole world should be
enrolled. This was the first
enrollment,when Quirinius was
governor of Syria. So all went to be
enrolled, each to his
own town. And
Joseph too went up
from Galilee from
the town of
Nazarethto Judea,
to the city of David
that is called
Bethlehem, because
he was of the house
and family of
David,to be
enrolled with Mary,
his betrothed, who
was with child.
While they were
there, the time came
for her to have her
child,and she gave
birth to her
firstborn son. She
wrapped Him in swaddling clothes
and laid Him in a manger, because
there was no room for them in the
inn.
Now there were shepherds in that
region living in the fieldsand
keeping the night watch over their
flock. The angel of the Lord
appeared to themand the glory of
the Lord shone around them,and
they were struck with great fear.
The angel said to
them, “Do not be
afraid; for behold, I
proclaim to you
good news of great
joythat will be for
all the people. For
today in the city of
Davida savior has
been born for you
who is Christ and
Lord.
“And this will be
a sign for you:you
will find an infant
wrapped in
swaddling
clothesand lying in
a manger.”
And suddenly
there was a
multitude of the heavenly host with
the angel, praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to those on
whom His favor rests.”
