Family, icon and

human family,

From the Pastor’s Desk
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On behalf of Fr. Adams and myself, thank you for all the Christmas cards and gifts. We are truly grateful and humbled by the outpouring of love that our parishes show. I pray that your Christmas was blessed with the presence of loved ones and the joy that comes from the birth of Jesus! We are now in the Christmas Season, a period of time extending from Christmas Day (December 25) through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (January 8). Our culture begins stripping away the Christmas decorations, but this is only the start of our Christmas celebration. We remain open to the gift of Jesus’ birth and ask for an outpouring of His grace during this time.
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, a time to look to the life and love shared among them as a model for our own family life. The holiness and love that was present in their home is what our own families strive for, even if it may be challenging at times. These days families face many threats—alcohol and drug addiction, pornography, financial woes, domestic abuse, divorce, neglect, and busy schedules that don’t allow families to spend much time together. What is the remedy to strengthen the family once again? It’s found in following the example of the Holy Family and calling upon the grace of God through prayer to help our families in our own specific struggles. It requires something of our families as well – it requires a family to be consciously attentive to each other’s needs and willing to contribute their gifts and efforts to the building up the home. Pope St. John Paul II once observed that “the future of the world and of the Church passes through the family”, which plays a vital role by raising children well and being a model to others of mutual love, service and respect.
On September 26, 2015, Pope Francis was in Philadelphia for the Festival of Families. He explained the beauty of family life as modeled by the Holy Family:
“All the love God has in himself, all the beauty God has in himself, all the truth God has in himself, he entrusts to the family. A family is truly a family when it is capable of opening its arms to receive all that love… God came into the world in a family. And he could do this because [the Holy Family] was a family with a heart open to love, a family whose doors were open. We can think of Mary, a young woman. She couldn’t believe it: ‘How can this be?’ But once it was explained to her, she obeyed. We think of Joseph, full of dreams for making a home; then along comes this surprise that he doesn’t understand. He accepts, he obeys. And in the loving obedience of this woman, Mary, and this man, Joseph, we have a family into which God comes. God always knocks on the doors of our hearts. He likes to do that. He goes out from within. But do you know what he likes best of all? To knock on the doors of families. And to see families that are united, families that love, families that bring up their children, educating them and helping them to grow, families that build a society of goodness, truth and beauty.”
In the entrances of the church, you will find prayer cards with an image of the Holy Family and a special Family Prayer that can be prayed at home. I encourage you to take one and pray it often, perhaps as part of your family meal prayer. Lift up your family’s needs to the Lord and entrust each member of your family to God’s providential care. Happy Feast of the Holy Family!
God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]
Please note Fr. Adams will be out of the office January 7-21.

We are excited to welcome Matthew Maile to our parishes! Matthew is a Theology I seminarian studying at The Saint Paul Seminary in St. Paul. As part of his formation, he stays at a parish in the Archdiocese for the month of January and shadows the priest in the everyday work of the parish. Matthew will be with us January 2-26 and will split his time
among all four parishes that we work with, attending Masses, Faith Formation classes, and other meetings and events. There will certainly be no shortage of things for him to do! I hope you will get the chance to meet Matthew during his short stay with us. We will allow Matthew to introduce himself next weekend at Masses and in the parish bulletin.
We welcome the newest members of the Church through the waters of Baptism: Gabriela Monica Munguia

A Family Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation to love.
In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit.
Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live. May our family always be a place of generosity, understanding forgiveness and joy.
Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be witnesses to your eternal design for the family, and grant that the Holy Family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
Prayer composed by Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, MD, Supreme Chaplain, Knights of Columbus. Next Pro-Life meeting will be Monday, January 8, 2018 at the home of Fran Christian at 1:00 pm.

St. Henry News
Church Cleaning - Chrit Hoey & Cindy Widmer are scheduled to clean the church by January 7, 2018.
What is the Dead Theologians Society (DTS)? A Catholic apostolate for 8th grade through high school age teens. Through the Saints of yesterday, the Dead Theologians Society inspires the youth of today to become the saints of tomorrow. Its motto is, “Dead to the World, alive in Christ!” This is inspired by Romans 6:11 where St. Paul tells us to be dead to sin but alive in Christ Jesus. Come and have fun, learn about a rock star in the faith, eat well and spend time with Jesus.
Mark your calendars and plan to join us the second Sunday of each month from 6-9PM. We will be alternating the location between the Church of St. Mary, Le Center and the Church of the Nativity, Cleveland: January 14 (Le Center), February 11 (Cleveland), March 11 (Le Center), April 8 (Cleveland), May 13 (Le Center), June 10 (Cleveland).
Become an official member by attending 3 times in a row or 5 times total! As a member you receive an official sweatshirt, rosary, and scapular! (All pictured here). But even better, by being a member you will experience your love for God grow by leaps and bounds and form a foundation that will enable you to go out into the world knowing that God and the friendships you made in DTS will carry you through. Please contact Fr. Adams if you would like to attend or have questions.
All parishioners of all ages, come to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during the DTS gatherings. We especially need adorers to commit to be before our Lord for an hour during the 6-9PM gathering time. Also, we need cooks willing to help make and serve a meal to the kids. If you are able to help in either capacity, contact Fr. Adams or the parish office and let us know.
Youth Grades 8-12
This summer we would like to take a group of youth to the Steubenville North - Youth Conference in Rochester July 13-15th. The theme for this year is REVEALED - We live in a world where voices are shouting at us from
all sides, trying to tell us who we are and who we aren’t, who we should be and who we shouldn’t be. But amidst all the noise is our loving Father, who wants to make Himself known to us and speak truth about who
we are. God’s love is deeper and His plan for our lives is greater than anything the world has to offer – will we allow Him to reveal it to us?
Join us for:
Music – Dancing – Laughs – Spiritual Growth
Over 50,000 Catholic teens across North America will participate in 25 Steubenville Youth Conferences, and we want you to be one of them! Come experience the love of God in a new and more profound way.
He has so much in store for you.
Registration forms and $50 non-refundable deposit will be due to the church office by February 14, 2018 to reserve a spot for your youth. Registration forms and information packets may be found at the church office
or at our parish website.
For more information please contact Jean or Fr. Chris at the church office or visit the website below! http://www.partnershipforyouth.org/steubenville-rochester/
