Fire

Last Sunday, at about 6 in the evening there was a fire in the Church. Seems that, we hope accidentally, a box containing the candles starting to burn out of control. Thanks be to God, there was someone in the Church praying who called the fire department, which arrived quickly to extinguish the fire before the worst would happen.

Jesus in the Gospel says to us: “I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!” (Luke 12:49). Obviously Jesus was not speaking about burning the Church, but uses that image to speak to us about the fire of His love, the fire that should be in our hearts. The fire happened in front of the statue of the Sacred Heart, that heart that burns out of love for us. When Jesus vanished in front of the disciples of Emmaus, they said to each other: “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke, 24:32)

I thank God that nothing happened in the fire, thank the person that called the fire department, thank the firefighters who came quickly to extinguish the fire. But like Jesus… I wish that my heart would burn, and in the heart of each one of you there would be a fire, the fire of God’s love, a real fire that would spread in each home of our parish and our city. For this we pray and work. Amen.

God bless,

Father José Félix

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Christian liturgy has always contained an opportuni-ty to make a choice for sharing. From the beginning, Christians pooled their resources, especially for the care of widows and orphans, at the weekly Eucharist. Over the years, the collection became detached from the litur-gy and baskets or plates would be passed through the community while the Mass was going on at the altar, or contributions would be collected at the doors. In Milan’s Ambrosian Rite, these gifts have always been brought to the altar by lay people in procession. In German coun-tries, the ancient custom was for the entire assembly to process with their gifts—first the men, then the women, then the priests and deacons—to offer their gifts at the altar. The old ceremony of canonization included a curi-ous vestige of this procession: people would present the pope with two loaves of bread, two barrels of wine and water, five candles, and three cages containing pigeons or turtledoves!

trabajamos. Amén.

Dios les bendiga. P. José Félix
