St. Joseph Parish invites all parishion-ers to our First Communion Celebra-tion that will take place on Saturday, June 3rd at 12 pm. La Parroquia de San José invita a todos los feligreses a nuestra Celebración de la Primera Comunión que tendrá lugar el sábado 3 de junio a las 12 pm.

La visitación de Maria a Isabel. (31de mayo) En aquellos días se puso María en camino y con presteza fue a

la montaña, a una ciudad de Judá, y entró en casa de Zacarías y

saludó a Isabel. Muy próximo a los días de la encarnación,

como se ve por el "sexto mes" de Isabel y los tres que allí per-

manecerá María, ésta "se levantó", y se puso en camino "con

presteza." No eran motivos de curiosidad. Más lo serían de

caridad por atender a su anciana pariente. Pero, sobre todo,

debió de ser la comunicación del gozo de felicitarla. No obs-

tante esta solicitud y "presteza," le hicieron esperar la oportu-

nidad de unirse a alguna caravana de las que iban con frecuen-

cia a la Ciudad Santa, sea con motivo de fiestas de

"peregrinación" o por motivos comerciales. Se ve la ausencia

de San José; si no, no hubiera sido necesario el informe que le

dará el ángel sobre la concepción milagrosa de su "prometida".

Isabel vivía en la región montañosa de Judea, en un pueblo que

no se cita. Una tradición que llega hasta el siglo VI lo localiza

en el actual Kain Karim, a siete kilómetros al oeste de Jeru-

salén, aunque no es muy segura. Otros han propuesto otras

localidades. Para ir entonces de Galilea a Jerusalén se emplea-

ban tres o cuatro días.

Llegada María a casa de Isabel, la saludó primero. El parentes-

co debía de ser próximo o de relaciones muy cordiales. El sa-

ludo hubo de ser al modo oriental, con reiteradas muestras de

afecto. Acaso María, con un gesto de delicadeza, se daría por

enterada del hecho de su gozosa maternidad. Es en esta atmós-

fera de exquisitez espiritual donde se desarrollaban estas esce-

nas.

Al oír Isabel el saludo de María, el Evangelista relata que su-

ceden dos hechos: el Bautista "saltó en su seno" de gozo, y ella

"fue llena del Espíritu Santo," y bendijo a María y al Niño que

guardaba en su seno.

La bendición de María la hace con "fuerte voz." Es frecuente

en Lc para expresar emociones vivas. Y la proclama "bendita

entre las mujeres," que es el modo oriental de suplir la carencia

de superlativos. Pero Isabel, por revelación del Espíritu Santo,

sabe que se halla ante la madre de "mi Señor." Es la proclama-

ción de hallarse ante el Mesías.

¿Qué significa que el Bautista "saltó de gozo" en el seno de

Isabel "cuando sonó la voz de tu salutación en mis oídos"?

Esto último no es más que un conocido semitismo por oír. Isa-

bel atribuyó a la voz de María que el niño "saltó" en su seno.

Estos movimientos fetales son muy conocidos, máxime ante

emociones muy fuertes en la madre. Pero el "gozo" por el que,

según Isabel, saltó el niño, ¿qué valor tiene? En el texto es una

atribución que hace Isabel. Podría ser todo ello un género lite-

rario, con el que se quisiera indicar el privilegio de hallarse el

Precursor ante el Mesías.

Y nuevamente beatifica Isabel a María: "dichosa la que creyó,

porque (?τι) se cumplirá lo que se le ha dicho de parte de

Dios." La frase puede tener un doble sentido. La partícula grie-

ga ?τι puede tener sentido causal, "porque," o recitativo, "que."

Según se adopte una u otra significación, el sentido cambia.

Los latinos y coptos la han traducido con sentido causal. En este caso se beatifica a María por los misterios que se reali-

zarán en ella. Se elogia a María, "que creyó," por lo que se

realizarán en ella los misterios anunciados de parte de Dios.

VII Sunday of Easter - Year of Matthew (A)- May 28, 2017

The Visitation (Luke 1:39-56) May 31st

The meeting of Mary & Elizabeth is only mentioned by

St Luke. We must note the superlative language in

which Mary is portrayed in the scene. Luke has used lan-

guage taken from the OT - from II Sam 6 and I Chr 13.

These OT passages describe the coming of the Ark of

the Covenant to Jerusalem. By use of such language,

Luke wants us to think of Mary as the new Ark of the

Covenant, the dwelling place of God-in-the-flesh. This is

the reason why, Our Lady is addressed as ‘Ark of the

Covenant’ in the litany.

Almost immediately after the Annunciation, Mary sets

out on a journey. Why did she go? We are not told, but

we can imagine that Mary was bursting at the seams with

questions and in complete and utter awe at what the an-

gel had told her at the Annunciation. She needed some-

one who knew what miracles were about. Someone who

would not doubt her story, but who could confirm that

God was at work here.

The moment Mary turned up at her cousin’s house and

called out her greeting special things happened - the baby

John the Baptist, leaped in Elizabeth’s womb and she

was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she ex-

claimed ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and

blessed is the fruit of your womb’. And ‘Why am I so

favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’

Long before we get to the NT story of Pentecost, the so-

lemnity we celebrate this coming Sunday, we see God

pouring out his Spirit in a powerful way on Elizabeth and

then on Mary.

Luke makes the Magnificat, Mary’s response to this joy-

ful meeting of pregnant women, both of whom are

caught up in God's extraordinary initiative to fulfill his

promises. This hymn is an outpouring of praise.

In the Magnificat, Mary aligns herself and her unborn

child with the poor, the outcast, the marginalized - God

has scattered the proud, brought down the mighty, filled

the hungry with good things, sent the rich away empty.

At the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, there’s a

powerful Venetian renaissance sculpture by Bartolomeo

Bon, called the Virgin of the Misericordia. In it Mary is

depicted as immensely tall, strong and regal, with the

infant Jesus at her breast. And her cloak is held open, her

arms outstretched. Huddling within its folds is all of hu-

manity – you, me, the people next door, the great saints,

and the great sinners. It’s a powerful portrayal of the Vir-

gin.

As we celebrate this feast of the Visitation let us remem-

ber this strong, patient and infinitely brave woman who

gave birth to the Savior of the world. Let us thank God

for her - and let us ask for her powerful intercession.
