FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: All of us have grown up to love the Cross of Jesus. Hopefully you have a crucifix in your home, a reminder of the Lord who died there for us. This week we honor a saint who knew the Cross of Jesus and who teaches to unite our whole lives with that saving Cross.!His official name is Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, but most people simply call him St. Padre Pio. He was born in 1887 as Francesco !Forgione. Even as a teenager, he heard God’s call, literally one day hearing Our Lord speaking from the tabernacle and telling him that he would suffer, be scourged and crowned with thorns. At 15 he joined the Capuchin Franciscans and was given the name Pio. In 1918, shortly after celebrating Mass, Our Lord appeared to him and gave him the stigmata, Christ’s wounds in his hands, feet and side.!He carried these wounds for the rest of his life. They were examined again and again by doctors who found no earthly explanation. The wounds neither grew smaller nor larger. They caused Padre Pio great pain, but a pain which he accepted for the salvation of !sinners. People came from far and wide to his confessional. He had the ability to read souls, knowing what sins each person had and helping them to face their sinfulness and obtain God’s mercy. Countless miracles were attributed to him during his lifetime. Even our late Pope John Paul II as a young priest traveled from Poland to visit Padre Pio for confession. And later on the late Pope, when he was a bishop in Poland, wrote to him to ask for his prayers for a woman who was suffering from cancer. Pope John Paul had the joy of !presiding over Padre Pio’s canonization as a saint on June 16, 2002 and attending that ceremony was the Polish woman whom Pope John Paul had asked the beloved Padre to pray for.! Padre Pio never drew attention to himself, though he knew his popularity and his fame. “The life of a Christian is nothing but a !perpetual struggle against self,” he said. “There is no flowering of the soul to the beauty of its perfection except at the price of pain.”!When he died in 1968, there was a little doubt that this great man of God would continue to do great things from heaven. “I will be able to do much more when I am in heaven than I can now while I am on earth,” he said. He still does. He is one of the church’s most popular saints and we can certainly understand why.! Our gospel today reminds us that we cannot serve two mastersGod and this world. Padre Pio certainly knew that. And he knew that service of God often means carrying one’s cross. St. Padre Pio is the saint of the Cross of Christ. Pope John Paul said of him, “The cross of Christ is truly the outstanding school of love, indeed the very wellspring of love. Purified by suffering, the love of this faithful disciple drew hearts to Christ and to his Gospel of salvation.” The point of Padre Pio’s life was that the wounds He bore were the visible signs of the love of the Crucified Jesus, a suffering love, a love that is ready to suffer to bring souls home to our Father’s love. For so many people during his lifetime and since his death, Padre Pio has been a channel of God’s love and a sign of God’s love for all. We could say that what was important in him was not the visible wounds of Jesus, miraculous as they were ; what was !important was the love of Jesus that flowed out of those wounds.! Ultimately that is the message of St. Padre Pio to us. We do not bear the visible wounds of Jesus as he did. But nonetheless we bear our sufferings, our pains, our wounds and we try to unite them with Jesus’ wounds on the Cross. Like Jesus, we must empty ourselves of our own desires and we must humble ourselves even as He did to the point of dying for us on the Cross. Then we must ask Jesus to let us bring His love through our hands, through our feet, through our heart to others in the world. We must be the channels of love to others, even as Padre Pio was. And it is precisely our love for Jesus even amid our sufferings that may bring souls home to Christ.! May we learn from this wonderful saint. May we learn to love the Cross and to love Jesus as he most certainly did. May we !remember that we can serve only one Master and that is Jesus who carried the Cross for us.!!

St. Padre Pio, saint of Christ’s wounded love, saint of the Cross, pray for us. Amen !!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Father Thomas B. Derivan!!

!

POPE JOHN PAUL II’S PRAYER TO ST. PADRE PIO! Humble and beloved Padre Pio, teach us humility of heart and help us to pray without ceasing, certain that God knows what we need even before we ask Him. Obtain for us eyes of faith that will be able to recognize right away in the poor and suffering, the face of !Jesus. Sustain us in the hour of the combat and of the trial and, if we fall, make us experience the joy of the sacrament of forgiveness. Grant us you tender devotion to Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother. Accompany us on our earthly pilgrimage toward the blessed homeland, where we hope to arrive in order to contemplate forever the glory of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Pope John Paul II!

Grant me through his intercession the grace of... (Here state your petition) which I ardently desire. Above all, grant me the grace of living in conformity with the death of Jesus so that I may one day arrive at the glory of the !resurrection. Amen!

5 WAYS TO LIVE A HOLIER LIFE

We are all called to be holy. On its simplest level, that means living a centered on God. This is done by talking with him a lot, !imitating his behavior and developing a love and respect for his !creations. It also means loving and participating in the Church he established on earth to help us be holy. Here are some ways to add holiness to your own life: !

• Make more time for prayer Spending time together is the best way to get to know God better.!

• Practice sharing God wants us to take care of each other. Look for more ways to share your money, ! time and talents with someone who needs them.!

• Celebrate the Mass Make Sunday Mass the highlight of your week. !

• Go to confession and celebrate God’s forgiving spirit.!

• Be a voice in the wilderness When you notice an injustice, be the first one to speak out and take action. ! Treat all people with the dignity they deserve as children of God. Share your faith Talk about God with anyone who!

wants to listen. We shouldn’t keep his love all to ourselves. There’s more than enough to go around.!

CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS TESTThe Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS)!will be given on Friday, November 4th. This test governs !admission to most Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese !of New York. Information on registration for the test and an online Student Handbook are available at www.tachsinfo.com.!Student Handbooks are also available at the Rectory.!The registration deadline is October 17th.!

! SAINT PADRE PIO’SPRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You.!!

Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength, that I may not fall so often.!!

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life and without You I am without fervor.!!

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light and without You I am in darkness.!!

Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will.!!

Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.!!

Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much and always be in Your company.!!

Stay with, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.!!

Stay with me, Lord, as poor as my soul is I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of Love.!!

Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late and the day is coming to a close and life passes, death, judgement and eternity!approaches. It is necessary to renew my strength, so that I will not stop along the way and for that, I need You.!It is getting late and death approaches, I fear the darkness, the temptations, the dryness, the cross, the sorrows.!

O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile!!!

Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers, I need You.!!

Let me recognize You as Your disciples did at the breaking of the bread, so that the Eucharistic Communion!will be the Light which disperses the darkness, the force which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart.!

!Stay with me, Lord, because at the hour of my death, I want to remain united to You, !

if not by Communion, at least by grace and love.!!

Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for, Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will, Your Heart,!Your Spirit, because I love You and ask no other reward but to love You more and more. !

!With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. Amen.!

SEPTEMBER SONG ! A WORD OF PRAISE

Do you ever think of prayer as a means of praising God? Yet, that is what happens when we offer a prayer of thanksgiving for a favor received or when we say: “Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit!” So do we at once give meaningful praise to God and acknowledge the glory of our Creator, the Creator of the world and all things in it.! Imagine what a glorious accomplishment it is, and was, and ever will be: to have created the universe everything! Our God did just that! And we, of all the creatures that inhabit the earth, are able to praise Him for it, are able to give glory to God together with the angels and saints. We are able to praise God for all that He has done. What a concept the created praising the Creator.! St. Francis of Assisi was so enraptured by the thought of !giving back to God, of praising the Almighty for what He had brought into being, that he composed his Canticle of the Sun a hymn of praise to the Creator. And we all are aware of how he exhorted all creatures, the moon, the sun, the stars, all animals, every !celestial body and all existence itself to praise the Lord, to give Him glory, and in every way possible reflect that glory.! Make this September a canticle of praise to God, an !acknowledgment of His glory. Make this September a prayer of praise to the Almighty, a song, a tribute to the Trinity. Make this September time to strive to reflect His glory by being ever mindful and thankful that we have been made a part of that glory that we have been created as vessels destined forever to reflect that glory in Heaven… !Praise be to God for all His giftsespecially Himself.!!
