Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Christmas is a season of giving. God gives, and the people give. If Christmas is the feast of giving, then the question of what to give and how to give becomes very im-portant. The Gospel of this 4th Sunday of Advent helps us to answer some of these questions. In the Gospel we read the story of Mary visiting with Elizabeth. What gift did Mary bring to Elizabeth? We are not told that she brought any gift to her cousin, although she might have brought some. We are told she brought just one thing: herself. She gave Elizabeth the gift of her very presence.

Dear friends, this is the best and the hardest gift of all. It is easy to send flowers; it is easy to send a pack-age; it is easy to make a phone call, to write an email or a wishing card; but to give the gift of ourselves, to make our time to be with somebody, that is the gift that many people long for, but do not often receive at Christmas. So the Gospel tells us we should give the gift of our loving presence, the gift of ourselves, for that is exactly what God has done for us. He gave us his very self. He gave us all. Another point we can make out of Mary's gift to Elizabeth is that one should give, not according to one's convenience, but according to the needs of the receiver. It was not convenient for Mary to travel alone, on a dangerous road from Galilee to Judea. But Elizabeth needed help. She was six months pregnant and would no longer be able to go and draw water from the well, to look after the crops and the animals on her farm; she would no longer be able to go to the market to do her shopping. So Mary, as soon as she learned that Elizabeth was pregnant went in haste and stayed with her until she gave birth. Mary gave what Elizabeth needed when she needed it. That is the perfect gift of all. So what is the best gift to give? The gift of our loving presence. Some friends of mine living far away from home shared with me that they wanted to go home for Christmas or New Year. However they could not make it, not because they could not afford the flight tickets, but presents or gifts for their family and friends. They feel bad when they don’t have any gifts to give away. I told them not to let money prevent you from seeing your beloved ones. Your presence is the best gift of all. Nothing else should matter. So just go and bring your loving presence to those you want to visit. And remember to bring your warm and tender presence, not complaining presence: Food is not so great. Weather is so hot or cold. There are lots of mosquitos. Hospitality is low. etc. Bring not our complaints but our joy and our help to our family and to those we visit. Mary’s visit to Elizabeth left the two women full of joy. Mary found joy in be-ing a guest because of her cousin’s hospitality. Elizabeth found joy in being a host, because Mary brought not only her own companionship but also the pres-ence of the Lord. May our own travels in this Christmas and New Year, our own hosting and our own visiting be as rewarding. May we find joy in seeing Christ present in all those we greet, and in bringing Christ into the homes of all those we visit. Fr. Thi, Fr. Chris, Deacon Gustavo and the entire staff of the Church of Good Shepherd wish you a grace-filled Christmas season and a year to come full of joy and peace.
