Pastor’s Page Below is a reprint of the letter sent on to the parents of students in Holy Spirit’s Religious Education program.

Dear Parents:

I hope your families are well and that you have been able to enjoy the summer.

As we prepare for another year of Religious Education at Holy Spirit, we want to err on the side of caution and do

everything we can to keep our Religious Education program available and safe. That said, we are offering every

family a choice of remote instruction online or the more traditional in-school instruction. All students are

required to complete our curriculum to be promoted to the next grade level.

The online course is a structured course with quizzes and tests. It is monitored by the course publisher and the

results are sent to me and Mr. Bob Hodgson, our Director of Religious Education. Mr. Bob will give you more

information when you register. To register, you must call Mr. Bob at 516-354-0359 (ext. 132), and make an

appointment to meet with him at his rectory office.

Mass attendance for students in the Religious Education program will be postponed temporarily, but this will be

revisited in January. For the record, the Church is clean and safe. We are socially distanced, and Mass is only one

hour per week, so unless there are extraordinary circumstances, everyone able should attend Mass.

Please get in touch with Mr. Bob Hodgson to register for our Religious Education program, as soon as possible.

We look forward to your family’s participation.

Thank you and be assured of my prayers!

Fr. Frank Grieco

September 11 Memorial Mass

This year, we will pray for and remember those who perished in the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001, at all the Sunday Masses on September 13, starting with the Saturday Vigil Mass at 5 p.m. on September 12. The names of those being remembered will be announced, the bells will ring and there will be a moment of silence for each person.

With the restrictions on the number of individuals permitted in the church, members of the New Hyde Park Fire Department will not be attending a particular Mass.

Please join us at one of the Masses that weekend, as we pray for those being specially remembered and their families!

P.S. If you have a loved one that you would like to have mentioned, please email their names to Monica Gannon at [email protected], no later than 12 p.m. on Thursday, September 3.

Reflection Sunday, August 30, 2020 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Lec. 124) 1) Jeremiah 20:7-9 2) Romans 12:1-2 3) Matthew 16:21-27 FOCUS: Trust in and follow the way of Jesus.

Peter can be excused for thinking as a human does, for he is human! But what gets him in trouble is his mistaken idea that he knows better than Jesus – that he knows better how Jesus ought to carry out his mission. This is reminiscent of the Fall: Pride in one’s own knowledge over that of God’s. We’re all susceptible to that, and Jesus reminds Peter – and us – that his way is the way. All we need to do is trust, and follow.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Jeremiah accuses the Lord of duping him, for his prophecies are met with laughter and mocking, derision and reproach. Paul encourages the Romans to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals that he must suffer greatly, and Peter attempts to dissuade him. Jesus accuses Peter of thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. He then tells his disciples that in order to follow him, they must take up their cross.

Announcements Respect Life Committee Florence Scarinci, Coordinator

This month we commemorate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. When asked to name one of the original leaders of the women’s rights movement, even grade school children will tell you, Susan B. Anthony. But Anthony did not start out her political activist career advocating for women’s rights. No, she was an abolitionist, passionately committed to freedom for slaves. It was only when she attempted to address an abolitionist convention, and was denied the opportunity solely because she was a woman, that she redirected her energies to ensuring equal rights for women, thus beginning the feminist movement.

Today when we hear the word “feminist”, we think of equal pay for equal work, equal access to educational opportunities, and sadly, the “right” to an abortion. But Anthony would be appalled to learn the turn the movement has taken to include abortion. As passionate as she was for freedom for slaves, for the rights for women to vote, hold office, get an education, and yes, address a convention, she was equally passionate in her opposition to abortion. As a Quaker, she was opposed to violence in all forms, and that included abortion: “I deplore the horrible crime of child murder…No matter what the motive, love of ease, or desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death. But oh! Thrice guilty is he who…drove her to the desperation which impels her crime.”

As the feminists said in the 60’s and 70’s: “Right on, sister!”

This year, due to COVID-19, the annual 5K Walk/Run will be virtual. Participants can walk, run, bike, or swim on their own, or with a small group of friends/family, any time during the week of September 26 - October 3, 2020.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul sponsors the 5K Walk/Run to raise awareness about poverty on Long Island and raise funds to help our neighbors in need. It is our largest fund raiser, and the parishioners, friends, and neighbors of Holy Spirit have always been very generous. The money raised by our team helps our neighbors in New Hyde Park and Garden City Park who need assistance with rent, utility bills and other expenses.

You can go online to Runsignup.com, search SVDPLI, and join the Holy Spirit team. To receive a T-shirt, you must register before September 14. For more information, please email us at [email protected].
