Message from the Pastor:

In a historic moment for the Archdiocese of Newark, Archbishop John J. Myers announced this past Monday his successor, Cardinal-designate Joseph W. Tobin, currently the Archbishop of Indianapolis. The appointment would make him the first Cardinal in the 163-year history of the Archdiocese, which serves about 1.2 million Roman Catholics in Essex, Union, Hudson and Bergen Counties; and the first religious order, a Redemptorist, to preside in Newark. The designation takes effect November 18th. Pope Francis announced a consistory for the 13 new Cardinals to take place on November19th, the eve of the closing of the Jubilee of Mercy. A Mass of Installation for the new Archbishop is expected to take place on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral in Newark.

“The Cardinal-elect expressed his gratitude to “the power of the Gospel, which has brought about remarkable growth of Christ’s Church in this Archdiocese and enabled its generous contribution, past and present, to American society and to the world; to Pope Francis, for his leadership of the Church and the example of his life, which teaches me how to be a bishop; to Archbishop John Joseph Myers, for the 15 years he has spent laboring for the good of the Church, and; to my beloved Archdiocese of Indianapolis – her Clergy, Religious and Faithful – in thanksgiving for all we have been able to do together, for the love and respect we share, for the unity that we will continue to enjoy in the communion of saints and the Breaking of the Bread.”

A As we look to today’s Gospel of Luke it is often referred to as an eschatological text.

It points to the end times and includes cosmic signs and natural disasters - catastrophes, disasters, wars, insurrections, etc., - that speak of the end of things known and familiar. The positive message is that only God has a hand in the matters of life and death and those who persevere in faith will not be saved by the events of the world but by God. We hasten the end not by being fearful of these events, but by being faithful to Jesus’ work of establishing God’s kingdom. Preaching, teaching, and living in Jesus’ name is the one sure way of discipleship that hastens Jesus’ Second Coming and secures for us Eternal Life.

Effective Nov. 15th, Rev. Manolo A. Punzalan will join Immaculate Conception Parish

in Mahwah as their new Pastor and I will relinquish my duties as temporary Administrator there. We wish Fr. Manolo God’s Blessings and guidance in his new assignment and we will keep him in our prayers in the days ahead. I wish you all a wonderful and safe week. God Bless You. Fr. Jacek

BURIAL VS. CREMATION

More Catholics are choosing cremation after death, and we often get questioned on the Church’s position. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Bergenfield, NJ, summarized our belief and our practice very succinctly and he has given me permission to reproduce it here. I felt it is beneficial for all to understand especially during this month of All Souls. Part 2 (Part 1 was in Nov. 6th, 2016 Bulletin) More Catholics are choosing cremation after death, and we often get questioned on the Church’s position. Last week we summarized our belief and our practice, that cremation is possible after the body has been presented for a funeral Mass, that the cremated remains must be always buried or entombed, preferably in a Catholic cemetery, and that occasionally there may be exceptional circumstances in which cremation must occur immediately after death for which the U.S. Bishops have received permission from the Vatican to have the cremated remains present at the funeral liturgy with the pastor’s permission. Some final directives are added below. In All Cases: The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and their final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or a friend of the deceased, is not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Our reverence for the cremated human remains also does not allow them to be separated, made into jewelry, or disposed of in any other way. Whenever possible, appropriate means for memorializing the deceased should be utilized, such as a plaque or stone that records the name of the deceased. The pastor should be advised at the time the funeral arrangements are made as to the final disposition of the cremated remains. If at a nearby cemetery, a committal service at the time of interment or entombment can be readily arranged with a priest of the parish.

SEVERAL SOURCES SHELTERS GRATITUDE!

Dear Fr. Jacek: “Thank you so very much for the warm welcome we received at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church this past weekend. It was truly a blessing to be invited to come with one of our babies. We are so grateful for the generosity of your parishioners - we collected $1,565! We would not be able to continue our work saving God’s precious children without this support. I also wanted to share this photo of you holding our baby. It’s amazing how you are mirroring St. Joseph holding baby Jesus! God bless you for all you do for God’s precious children.” Kathy DiFiore, Founder
