My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
With Easter Sunday being so early this year (March 31st), Ash Wednesday will be here in just a few days. Doesn’t it seem like
we just celebrated Christmas?! Traditionally, the Tuesday be-fore Ash Wednesday is known as “Mardi Gras” or “Fat Tues-
day”, a day for celebrating and eating rich foods before the Lenten fast. As a matter of fact, Mardi Gras is often celebrated
not only on the day before Ash Wednesday but for a period of several days before the beginning of Lent.
We have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate in a big way
this Sunday (February 10th) at our Parish Ethnic Festival in the Parish Center. Hours will be from 1:00 to 5:30 P.M. We will
have delicious ethnic foods, great entertainment, and beautiful visual displays. (Please see the ad in today’s bulletin.) The
event is free. If you would like to try a sampling of the mouth-watering dishes, the cost is only $5.00 per person, and that in-
cludes a sampling of all the dishes available! Come and eat, listen to the toe-tapping music, watch the rhythmic dancing, and
enjoy the arts, crafts, costumes, etc. In other words, celebrate “Mardi Gras” in a way you won’t forget!
Then, on Ash Wednesday, and throughout the Season of
Lent, may we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter by engaging in more fervent prayer, fasting, and works of service.
We so often hear it said that the world is in such a sad state, well, we can do something about it! God surely does hear our
prayers, and He answers them. He responds also to our efforts
at fasting and performing good works. Throughout this Season of Lent, may each of us empty ourselves of everything that is not
of God so that we can more fully rejoice in the new life He of-fers us at Easter.
I urge each of you (and I’m including myself) to experience
Lent in a very serious manner this year so that it will truly make a difference in our lives. Please choose at least one thing that
you will do during Lent that will bring you---and perhaps those around you---closer to God. That might be to read a passage
from the Bible every day, to pray the Rosary, to attend daily Mass at least one or more times each week, to visit a nursing
home or an elderly or infirm person who is homebound, to fast from some kind of entertainment you enjoy, or any one of so
many different things. If we not only make an honest attempt to simplify our lives this Lent by eliminating from our schedules
all those things that distract us from that to which God is calling us, but if we also try to do something positive for others, then
Lent will be a time for spiritual growth and personal fulfillment. All of our sacrifices, however large or small they may be, are
significant in the eyes of God, and He can use them to further the Kingdom of God on earth.
So, as we approach Ash Wednesday, I wish you all a wonder-
ful “Mardi Gras” and a spiritually-enhancing Lent.

THE INCARNATION CHURCH MOUSE
Hi Folks!
Well, if you still have your Christmas decorations up you are about out of time since Lent starts this Wednesday, Feb. 13th. It seems to me that time does fly, except when it’s Lent that is. Then those 40 days seem to never end. When I was a much younger mouse and I’d “give up” cheese or my favorite snack, it was like Easter would never get here. 40 days without something I loved; I’d never make it. My mom would say, “Incy, don’t think about it, you’ll be enjoying those Cheez-it’s before you know it.” “You are doing it for a good reason. Jesus fasted in the desert and you can too.” Mom always had a way of mak-ing sense. Well, now at my older age I still find it hard to “give up” something but I want to have a good Lent and journey with Jesus in the desert. I realize that if Jesus carries us as He did in the Footprint story, He will certainly walk with me and even carry me through the desert these 40 days of Lent. Just as we find peace and comfort when we take walks with our friends and those we love and talk and share our feelings with them, we can do the same dur-ing Lent with Jesus. I hope to tell Him how I feel about Him and love Him. I’d share what’s on my mind or troubling my soul and know that He will be a good listener, giving me some good ways to live a better life, especially with Him as my guide. I may tell Him this Lent I want to “give up” being judgmental or unkind. I may tell Him I’ll try not to gossip or hurt someone with my sharp tongue. I’ll try to “give up” being selfish and prejudiced. I’ll try to “give up” my habits that keep me from being close to Him. I know that these 40 days may be rough, like when I was a kid, but I am no longer a kid. I need to give up things that are harder since I am older and knowing that I am
not alone on this journey of Lent. I want to walk through the desert with Jesus so that at the end of this season I’ll be able to run like the Apostles and look into the empty tomb and see the Light of the risen Lord. I may be a little tired and weak from the journey but in the end it will be worth it. So, as mom said to me, “Hang in there these 40 days, remember Jesus fasted and so can we.” We are not
alone. So when we become “marked people” with our Lenten Ashes on Wednesday let them be a reminder that the journey to the Light has just begun and the journey will be as good as we make it. Have a good and holy journey.

OUR LENTEN PARISH MISSION this year will be
held from Monday, February 18th, to Wednesday, February 20th. Our Mission Director will be Fa-ther Bill McCarthy, MSA, the Di-rector of My Father’s House Re-treat Center in Moodus, Connecti-cut. Father Bill will preach at all of the Masses on the weekend of February 16th and 17th (the first weekend of Lent).
The Theme of the Parish Mission will be a “Personal Relationship with Jesus.” Father Bill has been giving parish missions for more than thirty years and has spoken at over five hundred parishes throughout the United States and Canada. He has a special gift of showing God’s love for each person. Through his teachings, love, acceptance, and joyful encouragement, his missions are healing and inspir-ing. Father Bernie met Father Bill in Rome, and many of our parishioners have heard him speak in the past and have nothing but praise for his preach-ing style. Father Bill will hold two sessions each day: one after the 11:00 A.M. Mass and the other after the 5:30 P.M. Mass on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednes-day (February 18th to the 20th). Morning and evening sessions are exactly the same so you only need to attend one session each day. On Tuesday, February 19th, we will have Lenten Penance Services during the context of the mission at both of the sessions that day. The focus on each day of the mission will be as follows: Day One: Enlightening: Listening to the Father---Exploring ways in which God speaks and how to dis-cern His Voice. Day Two: Enflaming: Loving with the Son---Learning Eucharistic love and true forgiveness---the ABC’s of God’s Love. Day Three---Empowering: Living in the Spirit---Implementing the Power of the Holy Spirit to heal, serve, and evangelize our lives. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend what promises to be a spiritually powerful Lenten Mission!

JIM DRUMMEY, NATIONALLY KNOWN CATHOLIC SYNDICATED COLUMNIST, will speak
in our Parish Center on Thursday, February 14th, at 10:00 A.M.. Mr. Drummey is the author of a number of books on Catholic subjects and writes a newspaper column known as “Catholic Replies.” This will be his fourth presentation at In-carnation Parish. This year, his topic will be “Journeying through Lent with Jesus.” He will speak on the last days of Jesus on earth, including His Passion and Crucifixion, and Seven Last Words from the Cross. This will be part of our Adult Education Program. The next in our series on “Catholicism” by Father Robert Barron will be held on Wednesday, March 13th, at 7:00 P.M. in the Parish Center. The session normally held on the second Wednesday of the month will not be held in February because the second Wednesday of February is Ash Wednesday.

The Saturday 4:30 choir is always looking for people who have sung previously in a choral group. We rehearse at 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, and then we sing at the 4:30 Mass. If you are a snow bird, all we ask is that you will be here for at least a month. Please come up and speak to someone in the choir after the 4:30 Mass, or talk to Jody Wolters, the direc-tor of the choir, after any Mass. He is usually at the piano or the organ.

now in its third year of Parish Ministry. We extend a warm welcome to any interested parishioner, particularly care- givers, who may like to start this New Year with us. We are a close-knit group of parishioners who dis-cuss all issues that impact on our life status. We support and care for each other and learn from each other. Our pri-mary strategy and tools are prayer and humor, and most of all, SHARING FRIENDSHIP. We meet every Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in the small Parish Conference Room. Today's Gospel Last Sunday, we heard how Jesus was rejected in His hometown of Nazareth. In the verses that follow, Jesus travels to the town of Capernaum and begins His ministry of teaching and healing. While in Capernaum, Jesus cures a man possessed with a demon and heals Simon's mother-in-law. After spending some time there, Jesus prepares to preach in other places. The fact that Jesus had previously been in Simon's home and healed his mother-in-law sug-gests that this encounter is not the first between Jesus and Simon Peter. We can read today's Gospel, therefore, as a description of the developing relationship between Jesus and Simon Peter.
In today's Gospel, Jesus teaches from Simon's boat. Jesus turns to Simon and instructs him about where to lower the fishing nets. Simon and others have been fish-ing throughout the night and have not caught anything. Simon pro-tests, claiming that such an effort would be futile. Simon ultimately obeys Jesus and lowers his nets into the deeper water as directed. Notice here that Peter calls Jesus by the title “Master.” He already recognizes Jesus as a person of authority. They catch so many fish that the nets begin to tear; Jesus' presence has created abundance out of
scarcity, just as it did at the wedding feast at Cana, which we heard at Mass just a few weeks ago.
Simon Peter becomes a follower of Jesus immediately. He calls Jesus “Lord”—the title given to Jesus after His Resur-rection—and protests his worthiness to be in Jesus' pres-ence. Today's Gospel, therefore, marks a turning point in the relationship between Jesus and Peter.
Two of Simon's partners are also named as witnesses to the event described in today's Gospel: Zebedee's sons, James and John. Yet Jesus' words are addressed only to Simon. Jesus gives Simon a new job, telling him that he will become a different kind of fisherman. No longer will he catch fish; instead he will catch people. In these words, we hear the beginning of the leadership role that Peter will have within the community of disciples. Peter was chosen for this role. His task will be to bring others to Jesus. Al-ready he is doing so; the Gospel tells us that all the fisher-men with Peter also left their nets and followed Jesus.
We continue to speak of Peter's leadership and influence in the Church today when we call the Pope the “successor of Peter.” We participate in the mission of the Church when we bring people to Christ through the example and positive influence of our lives.

to teach our children about Lent.
We may fast, pray and give alms in
special ways throughout the year, but
it is especially important to do so
during Lent. It is a time to teach
about penance and confession of sin,
sacrificing a dessert or party and
putting the money into the rice bowl
instead; it is about attending Holy
Thursday Mass or the Good Friday
service. We can attend the Stations
of the Cross, abstain from meat on
Fridays, and give generously to the
poor. We do this to renew our minds
and our hearts to celebrate the great
feast of Easter so our minds and
hearts will rise with Christ as well.
