A Reader Writes By the time this magazine is being read the Football World Cup will be well
under way. I can recall watching England win nearly half a century ago but I
confess I am not interested in the game and will seek out football free zones. It
is however something which generates great passion among its followers and I
hope there is a fair and exciting tournament for them to enjoy. I do worry
about the huge sums of money involved. Analysts writing Deloitte’s Football
Finance Report have calculated that the Premier League Clubs’ revenues ex-
ceeded £3billion in the season just ended. The average player salary in such
clubs was £1.6million. Brazil, the host nation, is destined to have one of the
super economies of the future – but at the present it is a land of wide contrasts.
There are huge numbers of people living in a sickening and de-humanising
poverty that feeds a level of violent crime that is beyond comprehension.
None of this means that enjoying football is wrong and it does not mean that a
country should not aspire to host showcase events. It does bring into question
our sense of values and how we often look to satisfy our own consumerism. If
we do so without proper regard of the needs of those around us in the world we
are simply takers. In the twelve years I have spent teaching and preaching on
giving I have always reminded people that what may be a modest level of giv-
ing to church or charity for one person may be truly sacrificial for another.
When the phrase ‘charity begins at home’ leads to charity being confined to our
immediate circle then it becomes very unhealthy. A mark of generous living is,
‘When, if what I give away was given back to me – it would make a real differ-
ence’.
Football introduces us to another contrast. More people in this country go fish-
ing than actually play football. Fishing is not particularly renowned as a huge
spectator sport on the other hand. There is a difference between the ‘doers’ and
the ‘followers’ – the players and spectators. That is the same in our faith.
Christians are called at different times to be both ‘doers and followers’. In
Chapter 2 of the Letter of James we read:
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not
have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily
food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill’,
and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith
by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith and
I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show
you my faith.
Enjoy this short football festival or whatever other activity you choose to fol-
low. Remember God’s love and grace are 24/7 and our response should be
likewise.

Levens Choir in North Cumbria Levens Choir gets around. Our biennial three day tours have given us the op-portunity to sing in many fine churches such as York Minster, Ely, Salisbury, Lichfield and Worcester Cathedrals and Tewkesbury and Sherborne Abbeys . In the intervening years we like to sing in some of the fascinating and beautiful places which are not so far from home but which are not amongst our regular venues. So on October 11th this year Levens Choir will be setting out on a mini tour of northern Cumbria. This will take us first to Carlisle Cathedral where we shall give a recital from 11 am. After lunch we shall set out for Caldbeck in the northern fells where we are looking forward to singing in St Kentigern’s Church. Weather permitting we shall also have time for a look around the village and a cup of tea before the homeward journey.

for this remote village in Nepal.

The Khiraule Education and Health Project (KEHP)
KEHP will have achieved its aim of providing a Lower Secondary School for Khiraule, a
remote village in East Nepal once the current building work has been completed.
We have achieved a tremendous amount in the past year. Our co-founders Pat and
Lhakpa have visited Khiraule on numerous occasions and Lhakpa has just returned from
two trips to Khiraule where he has been monitoring and supervising work on our current
programme:
Solar panels funded by the Juniper Trust have been installed. These feed batteries and
supply power to 2 PC’s and to lights in each classroom.
KEHP were successful in getting a Rotary International Award and work has started to
level the playground area, install a boundary wall, 4 additional toilets and a water
supply, and build display boards and office furniture, plus supply books.
KEHP are constructing a new building with 5 rooms for a nursery, a Health Clinic and a
Library.
We are now raising funds to continue to fund 3 additional teachers at the school to sup-
plement those funded by the Nepal Education Authority, and will need to fund more
teachers in the near future. We will also be funding the training for a Health Worker to
midwife level, providing the equipment and supplies for the clinic, and will be paying the
annual salary of the Health Worker.
KEHP was formed in May 2011 and now has 37 members and many donors. We are a
Registered UK Charity (no 1149503) and are able to claim back Gift Aid from HMRC for
any payments made by UK taxpayers. All donations go directly to the projects. Our web-
site www.khiraule.org.uk provides updates on events and information about member-
ship and donations. We also have taken a trial subscription to www.justgiving.com for
those who wish to raise money by sponsor events.

PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL
A regular meeting of the Parochial Church Council was held on 2nd
June 2014 and among the matters discussed were:-
The repairs to the church building, which were identified by the quin-
quennial inspection, are almost complete. The PCC was grateful to
receive a legacy for the fabric fund from the late John Wooler’s estate
and it will be put towards these repairs.
Some of the applications for further funding for the re-ordering of the
church have been successful and the outcome of others is still awaited.
A tendering process will begin shortly, for this re-ordering project.
Future events include:

The Northern Fells Groups ‘men in sheds’ project will start again on Tuesday 1
st July at 10.00. Please come along, meet the new Shedmaster, Ken, and
help to decide how the project develops in the coming months. We have a small collection of tools and materials, and have access to some power tools if they are required. There is wheel chair access to the workshop, but no on-site toilet facilities. We can be found in the old joiners’ workshop, on the green in Caldbeck. Come along see what we plan to do, and what we offer. The tea/ coffee making facilities are first class.

CALDBECK & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
The Viking Influence in Cumbria
At the May meeting of the Caldbeck & District Local History Society in the Parish
Hall, local historian James Relph, who is also President of the Lakeland Dialect
Society, spoke about ‘The Viking Influence in Cumbria’.
Lightheartedly claiming that most of us were descended from the Vikings, he de-
scribed how they originated in North Russia. From there, over the 9th to the 11th
centuries they sailed to: Scandinavia, Scotland, England, Ireland, Normandy,
Greenland, Iceland, Newfoundland, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, and
were to settle in Normandy, Ireland, eastern England and Scotland.
In his accompanying slide presentation, Mr Relph showed typical Viking land-
scapes, farm buildings, weapons, boats, etc. and spoke of the Viking influence on
Cumbrian place names and the English language. Evidence of their presence in
Cumbria included the brooches found at Orton Scar in 1847, the Gosforth Cross
and the Penrith hogsback tombstones.
Finishing his talk as he began, Mr Relph reiterated that a lot of us must be de-
scended from the Vikings and so must be related!
The meeting was chaired by President John Price, who thanked the speaker for his
interesting talk.
The next meeting of the Society will be in the Parish Hall on Wednesday, 16th
July at 7.30 pm, when Susan Dench, formerly Archivist at Carlisle Record Office,
will give an illustrated presentation on 'Women's History Illustrated from Cum-
brian Sources'
A MESSAGE FOR DOG OWNERS
On the 23rd May 2014 an incident was reported to me about a dog, belong-ing to a local person who lives in Caldbeck, that was seen chasing Ewes on the common above Whelpo. It then attacked a lamb and if it had not been for the quick intervention of a local resident the lamb may have suffered hor-rendous injuries which could have led to the lamb being killed. Incidents of this nature are fortunately rare but it is of some concern that the owner had no control over the dog. This has highlighted the need for all dog owners to keep them under control when walking through sheep either on footpaths or on the Common. Ken Pears - Chairman of Caldbeck Commons

CALDBECK MOTHERS’ UNION MAY 2014
The May meeting of Mothers Union was opened by Ann Wade, who gave a
report on .the Trienniel Conference of MU held at Swanwick attended by
Shirley Rolph and herself. There had been various seminars and work-
shops. The Bible Studies led by Bishop James Newcombe were particularly
memorable as he included many amusing anecdotes. Shirley showed exam-
ples of her handiwork from the craft workshops.
The volunteer leader, Liz Boydell chose the opening hymn and shared
three inspirational readings from “The Friendship Book,” which had been
given to her some years ago by her very good friend Barbara. Liz also led
the prayers, before introducing the speaker, Mr Ken Whalley from Tools
with a Mission ( TWAM )
Mr Whalley began by telling us how a man living in Essex was commis-
sioned to design and build some chicken coops to send to Africa and he
soon had orders for more. He replied to their request by suggesting that
they made the coops themselves following the instructions provided, but
was told that they had no tools. This sparked the idea of sending tools over-
seas. TWAM have been doing exactly that for 29 years and there are now
250 collectors in the UK. A wide variety of tools are collected, including
sewing machines, knitting machines, carpentry tools, motor mechanic tools,
garden tools, engineering tools. Educational bags are made up for the
schools and items for craftwork and lengths of material for sewing projects.
Mr Whalley displayed information and had photographs to hand around,
showing all the types of Hand Tools being used by the people who had re-
ceived them. The tools are collected and then refurbished at their centre,
before sending overseas. Literature, patterns and lists were available for
each member to take and become part of the team.
TWAM also provide moulds which allow trained teams to build rainwater
harvesting tanks. Over 40 tanks have been installed in rural areas in
Uganda and are now planning to start installations in Rwanda. Mr Walley
closed in prayer and emphasised the charity is interdenominational .The
patrons are Archbishop of York, Rt Rev John Sentamu, Delia Smith and
Tommy Walsh
Pat Shaw expressed appreciation on behalf of the MU members for the in-
spiring initiative of the charity channelling our throw away items to be-
come a means of enabling other people to earn a living and to support
themselves.

HELP CUMBRIA
The Cumbria Community Foundation is a County wide charity set up some 15
years ago which exists to benefit people and places in Cumbria. The Foundation
makes grants all over the county helping organisations like village halls, first re-
sponders, and other organisations that help with older people, the disabled, and
youth groups. It also has funds for travel bursaries and educational grants. It is
able to do this because people and businesses have created grant making funds
with the Foundation.
Until 31st March 2015 the government will add 50% to the value of any new
money given to the Foundation for long term investment, where the income is
used to help benefit a particular age or disability or area or other charitable pur-
pose in the County as specified by the donor.
50% is also added by the government to the funds of an existing local charity
transferred to the Foundation where the management of the local charity has run
out of puff and needs fresh organisation.

The Annual meeting of Castle Sowerby Parish Council was held in Millhouse Village
Hall on May 15th 2014,where the Chairman welcomed a full Council. He then gave his
Annual Report. He commenced by thanking the Councillors, Clerk, Auditor. also Geoff
Hine, Northern Fells Group representative for their valuable contribution. He also went
on to thank Parishioners for attending meetings and generally keeping the Parish tidy,
by picking up litter, cutting verges and also keeping the recycling bank tidy. The Parish
Council meet 6 times each year. Additional meetings may be called if a planning deci-
sion is controversial. Receipts from the Recycling bank amounted to £562.00 which
will be used for the benefit of the parish. Grants were awarded to the cutting of grass in
Castle Sowerby Church yard of £250.00, and Northern Fells Group of £200.00.
Northern Fells. Northern Fells Group Trustee, Mr Geoff Hine had attended meetings,
he also said he had spoken to Prince Charles on his recent visit to Caldbeck who is very
interested in the Northern Fells as he helped to set up the Northern Fells Group with Dr
Jim Cox.
Meeting. The Bi monthly meeting followed with the Election of Officers. The Chair-
man Mr. John Foster and Vice Chairman Mrs. Joyce Wetherell were re-elected for the
coming year.
Hewer Hill Quarry. No signs have been received yet to define the footpath more
clearly through the Quarry.
Highways. Several road repairs were reported to the Parish Council, one near to Mun-
grisedale Parish at Well House, the Coal Road, the bridge at Chapel Howe on the B
5305 is getting worse, the sign on the B 5305 leading to Hewer Hill is still badly
twisted, also the drains at Sour Nook. These will all be reported to the County Council
Highways Dept. The Parish Council would investigate the flooding at Sour Nook to
see if there was any damage to the Inspection Chamber at Sour Nook Inn.
Led Plan. Councillor Philippa Groves together with parishioner Helen Kerry had at-
tended a meeting at Thursby to find more information about the Community Led Plan.
After a discussion it was decided to support the Led Plan. It would enable organisa-
tions in the Parish to access funding for projects.
Planning. Planning Applications received by the Parish Council: Construction of two
storey extension to existing dwelling to provide self contained but connected living
accommodation with disabled and elderly access to ground floor and two additional
bedrooms to first floor, Cherry Trees Farm, Hewer Hill, Hesket Newmarket, for Mrs.
V. Thompson.
Finances. Annual Financial Return for 2013-2014. Accounts are available for inspec-
tion by the Public from June 2nd 2014 to June 27th 2014 by appointment with the
Clerk. The Internal Auditor approved the Parish Council Accounts for 2013 2014. The
meeting approved the Chairman to sign 2013 / 2014 Annual Financial Return and Gov-
ernment Certificate.

May was a very normal month for our rainfall here at Sebergham with no surprises and
the average May rainfall over the last 10 years has been 72.44 mm (2.85 ins) and as you
can see we could not have been closer to our May monthly average for this year. How-
ever we had 23 wet days during the month and that is when we recorded at least 0.2 mm
during a 24 hour period and on 12 of these days we recorded in excess of 2.00 mm with
the most rain falling on Wednesday 7th May of 10.20 mm (0.40 ins). Also, this year we
are above our 10 year average rainfall for the first 5 months of this year of 365.20 mm
(14.38 ins) and you will see this is just over 5 ins to the end of May whereas last year
2013 we were about 3 ins below our 10 year average.

month has been above our ten year average of 06.28°C (43.30°F) and our coldest night
time temperature for May was in 2010 of 05.17°C (41.30°F). We recorded no frost during
the month and the last time this happened was in 2007 and there were only 16 days of
frost between 01 October '13 and 31 May '14 (8 months) and the most severe frost was
Friday 22 November13 of -02.80°C (26.96°F).
Wind.
The average wind speed for May was 1.4 mph and we recorded a high on Friday 09 May
of 24 mph from the WSW at 13.00 hrs. The dominant wind direction for the month was
from the W being the first time from this quarter since March 2013.

On the evening of Wednesday 4 June we were driven by Mr Tyson in his bus
to The Trout Hotel in Cockermouth for a meal to celebrate our WI’s birthday.
Despite the poor weather and all the road works in Cockermouth, we arrived
in good cheer looking forward to our meal. As usual, many of us couldn’t
remember what we had chosen from the menu at our last meeting! - So, thank
you, Mrs P Richardson, for reminding us! Your skills as our secretary were
much appreciated.
The competition for a decorative thimble was won by Mrs K Davie.
After a pleasant evening of good food and ‘crack’, we were driven back to
Caldbeck by Mr Tyson.

MAY 2014
In May members heard a captivating talk by husband and wife team, Hugh and
Yvonne Povey from Treetyme Nurseries, Kirkoswald. Their talk was in 2 parts
the first of which focussed on their specialism, Cercis, which are small trees or
shrubs, otherwise known by the nickname ‘Redbud Tree’. Treetyme have the
national collection in their small arboretum. Whilst they are native to many areas
in the world they are not well known in the UK and there are only roughly 28
species. Cercis will flower best in warm, sunny locations and as the climate be-
comes cooler flowering becomes reduced. Cercis Chinensis such as ‘Avondale’
and ‘Shirobana’ are the only species that flower prolifically in the UK. However,
it is not all bad news! Other species can give good displays. Cercis leaves are
heart-shaped and can be red, green, yellow and variegated. The trees are drought
tolerant, do not have invasive roots, are winter hardy and are safe plants for small
gardens and patio containers. Celebrity endorsement – Mark Knopfler (of Dire
Straits fame) recently released a CD which included the song “Redbud Tree”.
The second part of the talk was about Hugh Povey’s business involving plant
breeding and marketing. He explained the immense competitive investment of
time, money and commitment seeking out new plants, flowers, longevity of flow-
ers, disease resistance and in no small way the economic factors, the ability to sell
at a good price and marketing vogues. We all like to visit nurseries at the start of
a new season to see what plants will look good in our gardens during the year or
years. Hugh’s talk gave us a brief insight into the huge effort that goes into pro-
ducing new plants. It is a very competitive business and one fact stays in my
mind is that in 2015 there will 49 new varieties of Petunias launched on the mar-
ket!

FELLVIEW SCHOOL NEWS JUNE 2014
SATs for Y2-6 have been part of this term’s assessment. All of the children have taken
Reading Comprehension, Writing, Spelling and Maths tests, with the Y6 pupils also
being tested in grammar and punctuation. Year 6 SATs tests, apart from writing, are
marked externally. The results are sent back to school at the beginning of July.
Sport has featured prominently again this month. Years 5 and 6 pupils have partici-
pated in cricket training and tournaments, the younger pupils have entered a KS1 athlet-
ics competition and received multiskills training and there has also been a football After
School Club.
Our other After School Club, which has been extremely successful, has been Drama.
Twenty children attended the sessions; it was amazing to see that even the quiet and shy
pupils could be quite confident in acting and speaking, as was demonstrated when they
gave a short performance to their parents at the end of one of the sessions. School has
booked a Dance After School Club in September and another Drama Club for next
year.
Year 5 and 6 pupils visited Nelson Thomlinson as part of a taster Day. Amongst other
activities, the children enjoyed Samba and Science.
The highlight of this term, for Y5 and 6, has been the trip to Manchester. Debbie Gra-
ham organised a host of activities which kept the children busy from first thing in the
morning until they fell into bed exhausted. The itinerary included a trip to Quarry Bank
Mill to find out about the Industrial Revolution and the living conditions of the employ-
ees at the mill. Other visits were; Imperial War Museum, Manchester United, Sewage
works at the Science Museum, Mosque, Cathedral and Lowrey Centre. The children
enjoyed a Chinese Meal and settled that down with skydiving! A fabulous time was
had by all.

FRIENDS OF FELLVIEW
Ladies Pampering Evening
Friends of Fellview Primary School hosted an evening of pampering on 16th May in Caldbeck Parish Hall. £423 was raised towards much needed funds to keep our school children well provided for with equipment and field trips.
Guests on the night received a complimentary glass of sparkling wine on arrival and were free to browse the pampering themed stalls in between receiving relaxing treatments.
Treatments included acupressure massage, sports massage, foot & calf massage, reflexology, happy place colour therapy, bio-energy therapy, threading, facials, nail shape & paint, shellac paint on finger or toe nails, make-up and hair styling. Lots of short taster sessions were available, so people could try something new without paying for a full session. There were products available to try and to buy from, among others, Arbonne, Avon, Neil's Yard Organics, Aloe Vera, Suzie Bou and Pampered Chef.
The event was extremely successful and has received lots of praise from those who attended as customers, stall holders and as therapists. Many people have been asking when the event will be repeated, so they’ll be pleased to hear we are planning the next one for Friday 28
th November,
ahead of the party season and in time for Christmas presents to be or-dered. Look out in the parish magazine and local notice boards for adver-tising.
A big thank you to all who helped, attended and donated prizes.
Three Peaks Challenge Nicola, Val and Helen would like to thank everyone who supported them during this venture. Despite the poor weather conditions Nicola and Val managed to reach the summits of Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw in 12 hours. Not be-ing ardent fell walkers it was good to get the encouragement from friends dur-ing the actual climbs. The Curry Night and the Plant and Cake stall were both very successful fund raisers and together with sponsorship £2900 was raised for 'The Eden Valley Hospice and The Jigsaw Appeal'. Unfortunately Helen was unable to take part, but the good news is that they are now in training to do it all again in September so that Helen will be able to com-plete her challenge, hopefully in better weather so that this time they will be able to see where they have been!

A summary of the meeting held at Rosley Hall on Monday, 5th May,
2014
Annual Parish Meeting In his review of the year the Chairman re-
ported that wind turbine applications continued to be the main issue
for the parish.
He thanked Anne Burgess for all her work as the Northern Fells Vil-
lage Agent for our area and wished her successor Barbara Stoddart
well in her new post. The two village halls were still very well used
and the school has had a successful year. The bad state of the roads
throughout the parish is of continuing concern.

Vice Chairman – Mr T Todd. Parish Representatives: Neighbour-
hood Forum – Mr W Brown, Northern Fells Group – vacancy.
Parish Council Meeting 1. Mr Ian Jackson has resigned from the
Council, the Chairman thanked him for his work on behalf of the par-
ish over the years. 2. Community Grants are available – for more
details contact the clerk. 3. Footway Lighting: there is concern about
North West Electrics policy for the removal of lighting from their
supply poles. It was felt that all those affected in the parish were a
priority. This is to be reported back to a sub committee on footway
lighting at Allerdale Borough Council. 4. Work is to go ahead to
restore the milestones at Old Carlisle and the Wreay road end. 5.
The council discussed two pre-applicaton consultations on wind tur-
bines a. at Clea Green – two turbines, hub height 20m, 27m to the tip
and b. at Fell Hill Farm, Welton – one turbine, hub height 30m, 45m
to tip. The council are against both applications.
6. Highways – there is still part of the wall missing on the bridge
near Stoneraise also one of the 30mph signs at Curthwaite still needs
replacing.

Can you help us to save our Tai Chi exercise class?
The class, with teacher Lesley Relph was started in 2003 by the Northern Fells
Lend a Hand Group. Sadly, over the years numbers have diminished to
such an extent that it is no longer financially viable.
WE URGENTLY NEED SOME NEW RECRUITS!!
Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise, which helps to relieve stress, ease sore joints,
tone muscles, improve balance & circulation and build up strength & flexibility.
It has been found to be beneficial for sufferers of arthritis & osteoporosis & similar
conditions and can also improve concentration & mental focus. Movements are
slow & graceful and many can be done seated, making Tai Chi accessible to all
ages & fitness levels. No special clothing or equipment is needed.
We currently meet in Caldbeck Parish Hall on Wednesdays
from 10.30 to 11.30am & charge £4 per session.
There will be 4 classes in July – on 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th. August is a holiday
month & we hope to resume (numbers permitting) on 3rd September. If you’d like

Concerts in Caldbeck It is very satisfying when artists who come to play for us want to return.
The Northern String Quartet made a splendid impression when they
played in November last year, and they expressed a wish to come again.
Their wish will be granted next year. Details in due course. I have re-
cently had an email from the harpist Claire Jones, who was so delighted
with the warm welcome she received in May that she hopes we will have
her back. Those who were there will be glad, I’m sure, to listen to her
excellent harp playing again, and if you weren’t able to make it last time
you will not want to miss the opportunity. She would like to put together
a programme with her composer/percussionist husband Chris, who
played a final piece with her, to great acclaim. They are in great demand
now, especially in America, but I’ll see what I can do to bring them back
again.
The next concert will be on Sunday afternoon October 5th in Caldbeck
Parish Hall at 3.00 pm, as previously mentioned. £10 will get you in, £8
if you are a paid-up Solway Arts member, £5 if you are under 16. The
international string quartet, the Carducci (named after a town in Italy)
will be coming. They have played in many countries, have produced
many CDs, and are in great demand this year and on to 2015. I am de-
lighted that they have agreed to play for us in Caldbeck. Mozart will fea-
ture in their programme. More details in the August magazine, but please
put the date in your diaries and on your calendars.

On 29th April three members i.e. Frances Osborne, Jean Simpson and
Jean Osborne (Kumara) joined the A.C.W.W. walk at Burgh-by-Sands
Village Hall. One hundred and twelve people set off at 10:00 a.m. on a
beautiful morning and walked to the King Edward monument, then along
Burgh marsh to Old Sandsfield, along the estuary turning right to Holmes-
mill and back to Burgh Hall for soup and bacon butties, made by Helen
Hinvest and her team. Some members did an extended walk via Beamont
and back on the Hadrian's Wall footpath. All proceeds go to support
development projects worldwide.
The May meeting was presided over by Jean Harper-Tarr and was very
well attended, plus two guests Jeanette Hudson and Liz Osborne. Apolo-
gies were noted and the County News discussed. County and national
raffle tickets were sold by the treasurer.
The president introduced the speaker, Lynn-de-la Plants, who grows her
plants just up the road. A flower quiz got members' grey matter going.
The winner being C. Scott. Lynn then demonstrated how to fill a con-
tainer, small and large hanging baskets, which were donated for the raffle.
The finished items were beautiful and won in the raffle by 1st L. Low 2nd
J.Osborne (Kumara) and 3rd J. Hudson (guest). The competition for a
pretty flower vase was won by L. Huckell, 2nd M. Nelson and 3rd S. Mor-
ton.

ANNUAL CHARITY PLANT SALE HESKET NEWMARKET
Monday 26 May was a lovely day for the annual plant sale. The sun brought out the ‘plant punters’ and trading was brisk, with people looking for the best specimens and the most unusual plants. As ever the ‘edibles’ section was popular and we had plenty of tomatoes on offer, with a huge range of varie-ties! It was lovely to see some of our regular customers coming back for more gems, and lots of people contributed items from their gardens, which we really appreciated.
By the end of the morning we had sold a large volume of plants and took £630. With additional sales since the day the total now stands at a super £709.88, which will go to West House, the charity which supports young peo-ple and adults with learning difficulties throughout Cumbria.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make the sale such a suc-cess:

PURPLE BAG SCHEME
If by any chance you run out of purple bags (sometimes it is difficult for the refuse
collectors to identify who has left out purple bags for collection and you may not
have received replacement bags) Gillian and Martyn and Liz and Andy at the two
village shops have kindly agreed to hold a supply of spare bags and Allerdale Bor-
ough Council have left spare bags with them. So just ask at the shops if you need a
purple bag for recycling your tin, glass and plastic.
There are still a few households in the parish who are not covered by the green bins
and purple bag recycling scheme – please contact the Clerk, Antoinette Ward, on

like the Parish Council to follow this up with Allerdale Borough Council and see if
some arrangement can be put in place to make it easier for you to recycle than your
current system of taking your recycling to ‘bring sites’.

Sebergham Sports Day
The weather was lovely for the Annual Sports Day at Sebergham last Sunday afternoon,
held in a field kindly loaned by Mrs. E. Horn, Lime Tree Grove Farm, Sebergham. The
Chairman of the Village Hall Committee, Mr. Geoff Hine welcomed everyone followed by
judging of the two competitions. Animal made from fruit / vegetables. 1st Lizzy Holgate
with cousins Monty and Martha.. 2nd Harriet Dickinson, 3rd Phillippa Dickinson., other
entrants were ..Steven Dickinson and James Dickinson. Fancy Dress beginning with the
letter “ G '' 1st Steven Dickinson ( Gamekeeper ) 2nd Phillippa Dickinson ( Giraffe ) 3rd.
Asher Thompson ( Grand Prix Driver ). other entrants were Harriet Dickinson, ( Gorilla )
and Michael Magnay ( Golfer ). Carol Foster ( Hall Secretary ) and Trish Airey took
charge of the Raffle. Prize winners being ..Irene Dickinson, Elsie Horn, Phillippa Dickin-
son, Connie Foster, Veronica Hornby, Lizzie Holgate, Steven Dickinson, Steven Quest,
Frank Dickinson, Janet Wilkinson and Harriet Dickinson. Jean Dickinson ( Hall Treas-
urer ) looked after the Ice- cream. Malcolm and David Foster organised games and was
starter for the sports. Carol and Irene Dickinson took charge of the prize money. The

The Village Hall at Sebergham was well supported on Saturday night for the May
dance. Music was by Roe Valley. John welcomed a room full of dancers, thanking
them for their support. During the interval, refreshments were served, followed by
John and Jean Salisbury taking charge of the raffle. Prize winners were: John Salis-

Notes from Caldbeck Parish Council Annual Parish Meeting and Annual Parish Council Meeting on the 12th May 2014.
The Annual Parish Meeting was held at 7pm with fairtrade tea and coffee served. The atten-dance at the Annual Parish Meeting had been 27 including 9 Parish Councillors, the Clerk and the two speakers. Following the Chairman’s Report and the Financial Report Rob Kitchen and Dar-ren Pineiro from Allerdale Borough Council Recycling Dept had spoken about the new purple bags issued to householders who already have green bins for paper and for garden waste recy-cling. The new purple bags are for plastic, glass and tin and are collected once a fortnight. It was agreed that the Clerk would liaise with the two village shops as to the possibility of them keeping spare purple bags there for people who might not have received replacement bags on occasion. She would also find out which areas of the parish don’t have recycling bins and liaise between them, the Parish Council and Allerdale as to whether a nearby site could be found for a commu-nal purple bin. The APM was followed by the Annual Parish Council Meeting and Norman Atkinson was elected as Chairman for the year 2014/15 and Colin Smithson was elected Vice-Chairman. Sincere thanks were expressed to Alan Tyson who had stood down as Chairman after two years in the role.
Public Participation: a) Kerry Harris, PCSO, had emailed her apologies - no incidents had been reported in Caldbeck parish over the last month; b) Residents raised four issues: 1) the continuing situation of the broken down wall and metal fencing at the proposed building site in Hesket New-market. The Parish Council had written to the owners of the site who explained that they are soon to put a new housing application in, and the Planning Officer has agreed they can leave the fence in situ until that new application is decided; 2) car parking on the edge of Hesket Newmar-ket Green (on the slip road leading towards Newlands Lane) causing erosion. The Chairman ex-plained that this is an ongoing problem with no easy answer. Neither the LDNPA nor the Parish Council wish to see railings around Hesket Newmarket Green, the possibility of stone kerbing has been considered but would be very expensive and would probably lead to cars parking on another section of the Green; 3) sieves on Caldbeck Green - agreed that these are a perennial problem but they will be cut down when the first cut is done in June; 4) parking on the Green at Caldbeck causing erosion - agreed that this is due to current building operations on the Green and should be a temporary problem.
Planning Applications: 7/2014/2100 Manor Cottage, Caldbeck. Replacement of 3 uPVC windows with timber windows. Agreed to support this application. Decisions: 7/2014/2065 The Beeches, Hesket Newmarket. Proposed Livestock and Machinery Shed. Approved with Conditions. 7/2014/2047 Fellside House Farm, Caldbeck. Proposed sheep shed. Approved with Condi-tion. 7/2014/2053 Lords Mill, Caldbeck. Proposed alterations to openings & fenestration on north elevations, addition & alterations to roof windows, repairs to chimney and lime pointing to stonework. Listed Building Consent.
Parish Maintenance. A number of matters of interest are being pursued: following up the situation with the 72 and 73/73A buses, both of which remain under threat; the cycle stand sites have been agreed and CCC is now to apply for formal planning permission for them; the Caldew footbridge near Waters Meeting has been repaired by CCC; drainage problems on School Hill to Commercial Row, and Long Lea to Parkend are being followed up by Highways and the Parish Council; a possible route for the proposed footpath beside Hesket Lonning is being negotiated; the need for sets to delineate parking spaces in Hesket car park has been notified to the LDNPA.
The next meeting is on June 23rd at 7:30pm in the Parish Hall.

The Wednesday Bus to Carlisle
Caldbeck Parish Council is keen to promote the 72 Wednesday Bus to Carlisle be-
cause, as with so many rural services, it is a question of ‘USE IT, OR LOSE IT’!
The bus leaves Caldbeck Oddfellows Arms 09.35, on to Hesket New Market 09.40, then
Newlands 09.44, Sour Nook Inn 09.47, Sebergham 09.50, Goose Green 09.52, Welton
09.54, Bridge End 09.59 and then on to Carlisle via Dalston and the new Sainsbury’s on
Caldewgate.
The 72 Wednesday Bus is a lifeline for people living in Caldbeck, Castle Sowerby and
Sebergham/Welton parishes. You can use your Pensioner or Disabled Bus Pass on the bus.
The bus timetable is on the Transport Noticeboard opposite Caldbeck Village Shop and is
on the Bus Timetable notice near the Market Cross in Hesket Newmarket. Or please ring

SEBERGHAM WI REPORT, JUNE 2014
President, Nancy Hullock, welcomed everyone to the June meeting. In the ab-
sence of our secretary, Joyce Harrison, the minutes were read by Anne Ludlam.
Joyce has another major commitment in her life and we are delighted that Claire
Guest has offered to step in and help when necessary.
During our holiday month of August, members have again decided to meet up for
dinner at Denton House for a social evening.
The trip to Floors castle was confirmed for Tuesday 2 September, leaving Se-
bergham village hall at 8.30am. The price will be not more than £25 which will
include the coach and entry. We would be delighted if any friends and their hus-
bands would like to join us.
‘Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend’ was the title of the talk given by Judith
Heelis. Judith had worked for one of the five brokers who supplied clients to
DeBeers from whom nearly all the world’s diamonds are bought. This seemed an
incredibly glamorous world to work in, dealing with the type of clients who
spend £3million on uncut diamonds to turn into stunning jewellery for the rich to
buy.
Diamonds have been described as nature’s most fascinating miracle. They are
made simply of carbon but were formed millions of years ago when crystallised
carbon, deep in the earth, was heated to an incredible 11,000-13,000 degrees cen-
tigrade. Only the forces of volcanoes have brought them nearer to the surface of
the earth. A diamond is truly forever and is the hardest element as yet known on
earth.
Diamonds are valued using the four ‘C’s, which are; Carat weight, clarity, colour
and the cut. The cuts are designed to enable light to enter the stone and bounce
off the facets to reflect a myriad of colours. A diamond cutter is highly skilled
and takes years of training as an incorrect cut could ruin a stone.
Very few diamonds are flawless as most have ‘inclusions’ which are tiny chips of
garnet, ore or other minerals.
Judith showed us slides of uncut diamonds, the working mines and finally stun-
ning pieces of jewellery including a tiara given by Napoleon to his wife Jose-
phine. Judith was warmly thanked by Margaret Mattinson.
Judith judged the competition for a piece of costume jewellery, won by Poppy
Hollins-Gibson with Maureen Allen second.
