Thanks to Steve for lining up the first Drive ‘n Eat of the season to Gate-way Classic Cars in Olathe and then onto lunch at the Old 56 Family Restaurant. Lunch was great and they got our large group through pretty effi-ciently. The next event is a trip to Abilene and the Eisenhower Presidential Mu-seum. The museum was recently completely remodeled and rededicated last October. So if you were on the 2015 National Tour when we stopped there, its all new. We will depart from the Free State Electric parking lot in Topeka at 9:00AM. There will also be a stop at Russell Stover's factory outlet in Abilene. We have 4:30PM reservations at the Brookville Hotel for their famous chicken. I will need to call the Brookville the morning of the event so if you are planning on attending and are NOT planning on meeting us at the Free State parking lot PLEASE CON-TACT ME so I can have your numbers counted for that morning's reservation. If you didn't buy an old car at Gateway because you need a new car, remember that the Auto Show will be in Bartle Hall March 4-8, and they also always have a nice display of old cars on hand. The next meeting will be March 13th (Friday the 13th !!!) in Topeka, hope to see everyone there.

Happy Motoring! – Malcolm

Millennial Madness

The Millennial Generation does have a heart for collector cars and it is growing .7 to .9 percent per year. Their cars of choice are 1. 1973-87 Chevrolet C/K, 2. 1965-66 Ford Mustang, 3. 1967-72 Chevrolet C/K, 4. 1987-93 Ford Mustang, 5. 1994-2004 Ford Mustang, 6. 1966-1972 Chevrolet Chevelle, 7. 1973-1979 Ford F-Series, 8. 1968-1979 Volkswagen Beetle, 9. 1974-1982 Chevrolet Corvette, 10. 1967-1969 Chevrolet Camaro. These cars receive the most calls to Hagerty with questions.

The following cars are growing more popular by the day. 2005-2013 Chevrolet Corvette, 1989-1997 Mazda Miata, 1993-2002 Pontiac Fire-bird, 1980-1986 Ford F-Series, 1993-1998 Toyota Supra, 1989-94 Nissan Skyline, 1997-2004 Chevrolet Corvette, 2005-2014 Ford Mus-tang, 1986-95 Jeep Wrangler, 1993-2002 Chevrolet Camaro.

In our club there are examples of these vehicles. Let’s break them out for cruise nights and tours to show them off to future members of the

group. Their common denominator is price, $23,000 compared to $29,500 for Gen-X.

Do Radial Tires Develop Flat Spots While in Long Term Storage?

Two of my Coker American Classics, the tires that are radial but look like bias play, are out of round. Coker will sell me two replacements and give me an adjusted price based upon the wear (little or none). I look forward to the refund.

No Heet Necessary

All gasoline contains 10% alcohol right from the pump. I have been using Iso-Heet since 1975, as it contains isopropyl alcohol, which will not clean the fuel system like regular Heet, which contains methanol. My mechanic told me that I no longer needed to use gas line anti-freeze so the case I bought for all four cars is not necessary. Keeping the tank at half full, or above so you don’t experience gas line freeze will always be a good idea.

Sunflower Region Meeting Minutes - February 14, 2020

Meeting was called to order at 7:33 at Merriam Elementary School. There was a total of 13 in attendance.

Don Beck provided the budget update, and the balance of the account. Motion to approve was moved by Rich and seconded by Diane.

The minutes from the November meeting were accepted.

Drive ‘n Eat is planned for February 22. The lunch location that was discussed was to consid-er eating at the Hwy 56 Diner. There was esti-mate for 13 people from the meeting that will be attending. Recommended reservation of 20 peo-ple for lunch. Steve Hartwich is leading the coor-dination. The event is at Gateway Automotive.

There is language in Kansas legislation being introduced for antique automobiles under Kansas House Bill No. 2528. All vehicles over 35 years of age would be defined as antique. This allows modified and street rods to be considered as well. The State of Missouri is looking at House bill 1652 to remove the mileage restriction for an-tique vehicles. Missouri currently has a 1000-mile restriction beyond attending car related events. General discussion on the licensing of antique cars and hot roads.

March 21 Drive ‘n Eat. Going to the Eisenhower museum, Russell Stover outlet, and Brookville place for dinner. Diane Plemons has made the arrangement including credit card reservation at Brookville. They can’t attend, so someone will need to confirm the number for the meal, and it is like $21.00 +/-. Malcolm volunteered to be the lead contact for this. We will need a hard rsvp for the number of those attending the day of the event. Leave at 9:00 am from Topeka Free State electric parking lot. The Brookville reserva-tion is for 4:30 pm, adequate time for the muse-um, and some time for the Russell Stover’s prior to getting to Brookville.

From the planning meeting the June event was discussed about attending the New Theatre, and possibility of getting tickets June 20th for the mat-inee.

There is also a pending June 7th, for a birthday

party for Mike Kozubek

April 18th is the Drive ‘n Eat to go to the SAC museum in Nebraska. There is a request for a day before to let them know that we are coming. Sr. and Vets are $11.00, regulars are 15.00. Guided tours for groups over 20 is $50.00. There is a phone number for the museum and the state park.

Planning meeting also discussed updated signs for the vehicles. Magnetic is about $10.00 and window cling are $5.00 each. 100 or more of the magnetic might have a price break, and the same for the window cling it could be a price re-duction. Another person that Tom knows it said it would be without the sunflower, and it would be $4.00 and may be $3.00 if it was over 100 or-ders. There is a question for the national organi-zation to consider buying some for national distri-bution. Malcolm is to share with the national club.

National tour update. Rich will be doing a scout-ing trip to Michigan.

The newsletter needs content.

Car show at dealership in Topeka on June 13th, they will have a car show that will support veter-ans. The $10.00 entry will be donated back to the post. Gates open at 8:30, show starts at 10:00 with awards at 3:00 pm.

The picture of car and couple in the Starterator were past car club members from August of 1986 of the Sandburg’s. Dick recently passed away and Barbara recently moved.

Show and tell had an old photo from mid to late 1980’s from Rich. Steve Hartwich brought in an older hubcap for an Oldsmobile. Steve also brought a mystery part that was guessed to be an auto part, a cannon, and a rodeo horse rider with a lasso, and the actual part was a starterator on a block of wood. Kelly brought in a book of Lincoln and Ford Ads. He also brought a Match-box car and a model station wagon.

Tom Millard and Steve Hartwich brought treats.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:38 pm.

Tom Millard met Mr. Conde in late 1994. He lived in Independ-ence MO and stated he was a car designer for Lincoln in the 1956 era. Tom obtained the photos and booklet described and gave them to me.

The black and white photos were taken at the Ford Rotunda building in Dearborn MI in approximately 1956. These GM-designed cars were the same ones that were part of the 1955 GM Motorama Show that was touring the US in that same time period. Mr Conde stated to Tom that the GM Motorama went to New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami. I believe it went to other cities as well.

Some of the concept cars he mentioned are in the photographs he took. They are the 1955 Chevrolet Biscayne, 1955 LaSalle II Roadster, 1955 LaSalle II sedan, 1955 Buick Wildcat III, the wheel and tire of the 1955 Pontiac Strato Star, 1955 Lincoln Fu-tura which later became the original Batmobile transformed by George Barris and the 1955 Eldorado Brougham. Tom bought Mr Conde’s copy of a GM concept car styling booklet titled Styl-ing, The Look of Things published by GM in 1955. The cover of the booklet is included in the photos. The book, which has 74 pages has a Foreward written by Harley Earl, Vice-President of GM in charge of Styling Staff. It chronicles the evolution of de-sign in the US not only of automobiles but of household items such as appliances, furniture, bathroom fixtures, kitchen items and home architecture in addition to other items in everyday use during the design period covered in the booklet.

Mr Conde died in 2008. In his obituary it stated that he was born in Santiago, Cuba and immigrated to the US in 1947. Mr Conde graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and obtained a degree in Transportation Design. He worked as a Designer for the Ford Motor Company, Raymond Loewy Studios and the Vendo Company.

WAYNE WORKS

Long known for making school buses, Wayne Works started building

horse-drawn “School coach-es” or “Kid coaches” in 1868

in Richmond, Ohio.

The company switched to motorized buses in the early 1910’s, and by the 1920’s

was a major supplier of city bus and school bus bodies for mounting on just about

any truck chassis available.

Over the years the company changed hands and is no longer in existence. But if you rode a school bus to school, there is a good chance it had a Wayne

body. If you are interested in more visit:

PEERLESS

“As Always...ALL THAT THE NAME IMPLIES”

The 1920’s were a heyday of growth in the automotive industry in terms of the number of cars built in sold, and new technology. Unfortunately many manufactur-ers had their 1930 models out, or ready for release within a few months of the October 29, 1929 stock market crash. The result would see the end of some com-panies within a few years.

Peerless was one of those com-panies, always having a quality car, priced between Buick and LaSalle. Prior to 1929 Peerless had one eight cylinder line, adding a second for 1929. For 1930, they added another eight that was clos-ing in on Cadillac price territory.

1930 Peerless models were first introduced in September 1929 with two 6-cylinder lines and one 8-cylinder model, all three identical to the 1929 series introduced Jan-uary 1929. The sixes were now gone.

In January 1930 the three models in this article were introduced all nicer with more features and high-er prices. The Standard Eight at the bottom was priced at $1,545 and was the cheapest Peerless 8 to date. The Master Eight in the middle cost $2,045, and the Cus-tom Eight at the top was $2,845. Unfortunately no one wanted eight’s this year or next. Peerless last season was 1932.

This ad at left is from the January 1930 issue

of “MoTor Magazine”, a monthly Hearst publi-

cation for automotive dealerships, service

centers, marketers,etc.
