The first CIE Expert Symposium in this Series, entitled “Light and Health” was held in Vienna, Austria, 29 September – 1 October 2004, and its emphasis was centered on the results of unfolding research on the effects of light upon the neuro-endocrine system and ultraviolet radiation effects upon the skin and eyes. The emphasis of the 2nd Expert Symposium is upon practical implications for lighting from new research findings.

Preliminary Programme

Two-Day Expert Symposium Thursday, 7 September: Sessions on Fundamentals: Biological Basis and Applications Effects upon Healthy People: Fundamentals and Applications Friday, 8 September: Sessions on Medical and Clinical Lighting Therapy: Fundamentals and

Applications Applications in Lighting - General Discussion Purpose of the Symposium: This symposium is aimed to bring together experts from the health research and the lighting communities in order to examine proposals regarding optimal lighting parameters to enhance health. A specific aim is to define the ranges of daily doses of light and ultraviolet radiant energy that are physiologically optimum. The Symposium will examine the impact of spectrum and spectra; variations, optimal profiles of light exposure variations, constraints regarding flickering, and recommendations for potential changes as a function of time of the day, season, climate, work conditions. The sessions are organized to present new health information where the basic scientists will be asked to speculate on the impact of their research to the indoor lighted environment. At least one-third of the time will be devoted to discussion of the possible consequences for different lighting scenarios, lamp and luminaire specifications. The panel discussion will be triggered by a featured speaker in each session. Support for the symposium is expected from the lighting industry, watch the website for announcements.
