Lila Joyce Zacharias, daughter of Ed and Nettie (Young) Weber, was born November 26, 1926 in Wagner. She died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Golden Living Cen- ter in Armour. Lila attained the age of 86 years, one month and 16 days. LIla graduated from Wagner School and then attended Southern Normal in Springfield where she earned her teaching degree. She taught country school for a couple of years. Lila married Wesley J. Zacharias on February 13, 1945 at the As- sumption Catholic Church in Dante. They farmed south of Wagner from 1945 to 1995. Upon their retirement, they moved into Wag- ner. Lila and Wes became residents of the Golden Liv- ing Center in Ar- mour on August 22, 2011. Wes died Sep- tember 7, 2012. Lila was a member of the As- sumption Catholic Church, Altar Society, a life time member of the VFW Auxiliary, where she was ac- tive at the District and State level, and the Card Club. Lila also served as a 4-H leader for many years. Lila will be remembered for her great cooking and baking, her en- joyment of fishing and her big heart and smile. Thankful for having shared her life are her children: James of Wag- ner; Larry (Danielle) of Astor, FL; Jane (John) Blaha of Dante; Nancy (Steven) Hermanson of Yankton; Mary Lou (Larry) Snyder of Lake Andes; Angela (Roger) Blaha of Wagner; and David (Debora) of Long Pine, NE; 24 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; three step grand- children; one great-great grand- daughter; three brothers: John (Elaine) of Parkston; Dale (Shirley) of Salem; and Dean (Karen) of Wag- ner; one sister, Elaine Anderson of Mitchell; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Weber of Wagner and Angeline Min- nehan of Aurora, CO; and many nieces, nephews and friends. They lived in Norfolk, Nebraska until moving to Fordyce in 1979. Susan was a day care provider in her home for many years. Susan’s greatest joy in life was caring for her family and her daycare kids. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Lady’s Guild. He grew up in the Bow Valley, Nebraska area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hartington in 1960. Gary then served in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed in Hawaii. Gary mar- ried Judy Ann Eickhoff on Au- gust 8, 1964 in Hartington. He worked on a farm east of Bow Val- ley for Bud Hesse for five years prior to starting his own business (Pinkelman Sales) in Hartington in 1969. Gary was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Bow Valley Park Association and the Yankton Home Builders Association. Gary served on nu- merous school & church boards and committees over the years. He was an avid hunter and fisher- man and always enjoyed getting people together for fish fry’s. Gary especially enjoyed the time he could spend at his cabin on the Missouri River. He attended Sacred Heart Ele- mentary School in Yankton and prep school at St. John’s Univer- sity in Collegeville, Minnesota. Joe grew up on the dairy farm west of Mission Hill and when he was 12 years old, his father died. After graduation, Joe returned home to farm with his mother and siblings. Joe built one of the first modern milk- ing parlors in Yankton County in the 1950’s and was a pioneer in conservation farming in the 1960’s using the latest tillage practices and equipment. Joe married Irene Vlasak on April 30, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church in Yankton. After returning from their honeymoon in 1952, Joe never missed a morning or evening milking until 1973 when he won a trip to Hawaii through the O’sGold Seed Company. Dur- ing his many years of farming, he was a promoter of breeding through artificial insemination and involved with the Dairy Ex- tension, Yankton County 4-H, Knights of Columbus and was a charter member of the South-East Experimental Farm at Beresford. He passed his love of farming to his sons and granddaughter and helped out on the family farm until he was 91 years old. He was very devout in his faith, a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church and strong sup- porter of Sacred Heart Catholic School. Joe was a quiet man who always lived life through his faith. When things were stressful, Joe’s favorite saying was “Oh Himmel” which meant Oh Heaven. Joe be- lieved that Sunday was a day of rest from farm work and would spend the day visiting with family and friends. He would often take milk, cream, fruit, and vegetables from his garden to shut-ins and friends in town. He had a passion for gardening and loved to share the fruits of his labor. Although Joe couldn’t travel, he loved geog- raphy and spent hours studying maps and reading about faraway places. Joe is survived by his wife Irene of Mission Hill, sons Tom (Alecia) and John (Sandy), both of Mission Hill; sister, Grace (Al- bert) Dutcher of Yankton; 8 grand- children; 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Ida Holzbauer and Anna Marie Holzbauer-Mach, and brother, Leo. Irene was employed at Gurney’s in Yankton as a seasonal worker for many years. She also worked at Sunset Manor in Irene and the Human Service’s Center where she retired in 1984 at the age of 70. She continued to work in home health care until age 79. Irene spent her spare time cro- cheting, reading and baking for various occasions and people. She also enjoyed visiting with her chil- dren, grandchildren, friends and other family members and would bring with her a bag of groceries or baked goods. Susan’sgreatest joy in life was caring forher family and her daycare kids.She was a member of St. John theBaptist Catholic Church andLady’s Guild.

Susan is survived by her hus-band, John Hesse of Fordyce, 4daughters and their husbandsand children, Amy and Chris Hig-ginbotham and Ryan, Samuel and

Gary Francis was born on No-vember 30, 1942 in Yankton, SD toEdward H. and Eleanor (Wort-mann) Pinkelman. He grew up inthe Bow Valley, Nebraska area andgraduated from Holy Trinity HighSchool in Hartington in 1960. Garythen served in the U.S. Army for

two years andwas stationed inHawaii. Gary mar-ried Judy AnnEickhoff on Au-gust 8, 1964 inHartington. Heworked on a farmeast of Bow Val-ley for Bud Hessefor five years

prior to starting his own business(Pinkelman Sales) in Hartington in1969.

Gary was a member of theHoly Family Catholic Church andthe Catholic Order of Foresters,the Bow Valley Park Associationand the Yankton Home BuildersAssociation. Gary served on nu-merous school & church boardsand committees over the years.He was an avid hunter and fisher-man and always enjoyed gettingpeople together for fish fry’s.Gary especially enjoyed the timehe could spend at his cabin onthe Missouri River.

Gary is survived by his wife,Judy of Hartington; four childrenand their spouses Jill and BobQuale of Wilmington, Delaware,Brian and Lynette Pinkelman ofBow Valley, NE, Tracy Pinkelmanof Broomfield, Colorado, Tiffany

Joseph J. Yaggie was born Oc-tober 3, 1916 to Otto and Anna(Zitzelberger) Yaggie in Yankton,SD. He attended Sacred Heart Ele-mentary School in Yankton andprep school at St. John’s Univer-sity in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Joe grew up on the dairy farmwest of Mission Hill and when hewas 12 years old, his father died.

After graduation,Joe returnedhome to farmwith his motherand siblings. Joebuilt one of thefirst modern milk-ing parlors inYankton Countyin the 1950’s andwas a pioneer in

conservation farming in the1960’s using the latest tillagepractices and equipment. Joemarried Irene Vlasak on April 30,1952 at Sacred Heart Church inYankton. After returning fromtheir honeymoon in 1952, Joenever missed a morning orevening milking until 1973 whenhe won a trip to Hawaii throughthe O’sGold Seed Company. Dur-ing his many years of farming, hewas a promoter of breedingthrough artificial inseminationand involved with the Dairy Ex-tension, Yankton County 4-H,Knights of Columbus and was acharter member of the South-EastExperimental Farm at Beresford.He passed his love of farming tohis sons and granddaughter andhelped out on the family farmuntil he was 91 years old.

He was very devout in hisfaith, a lifelong member of SacredHeart Church and strong sup-porter of Sacred Heart Catholic

School. Joe was a quiet man whoalways lived life through his faith.When things were stressful, Joe’sfavorite saying was “Oh Himmel”which meant Oh Heaven. Joe be-lieved that Sunday was a day ofrest from farm work and wouldspend the day visiting with familyand friends. He would often takemilk, cream, fruit, and vegetablesfrom his garden to shut-ins andfriends in town. He had a passionfor gardening and loved to sharethe fruits of his labor. AlthoughJoe couldn’t travel, he loved geog-raphy and spent hours studyingmaps and reading about farawayplaces.

Joe is survived by his wifeIrene of Mission Hill, sons Tom(Alecia) and John (Sandy), bothof Mission Hill; sister, Grace (Al-bert) Dutcher of Yankton; 8 grand-children; 9 great-grandchildrenand many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death byhis parents, sisters, Ida Holzbauerand Anna Marie Holzbauer-Mach,and brother, Leo.

She marriedJames Nielson onJune 21, 1944. Tothis union, six chil-dren were born.James died from a

heart attack on June 25, 1967.Irene was employed at Gurney’s

in Yankton as a seasonal worker formany years. She also worked atSunset Manor in Irene and theHuman Service’s Center where sheretired in 1984 at the age of 70. Shecontinued to work in home healthcare until age 79.

Irene spent her spare time cro-cheting, reading and baking forvarious occasions and people. Shealso enjoyed visiting with her chil-dren, grandchildren, friends andother family members and would

bring with her a bag of groceries orbaked goods.

Thankful for having shared herlife are her children; Barbara (Mor-ris) Almond, Sheryl (Hans) Zink,Rita (Greg) Williams, Leland(Nancy) Nielson, Judy (Larry) Laneand Leila (Bruce) Christopher, 20grandchildren, 32 great-grandchil-dren, sisters and brothers; Opal(Elmer) Wolff, Dorothy Nielson,Robert (Dorothy) Hixon, Harry(Marian) Hixon, Patricia (LaWayne)Dubberpuhl, Bonnie (Vern) Mar-low, Jerrie (Charles) Row andVickie Hixon.
