Shri. Shantanurao L. Kirloskar, our founding father had a philosophy of “making a difference in people’s lives”.

Kirloskar believes in CSR as defined by the World Bank and aspires to be an excellent, society oriented and

ethical company.

Enriching lives (making a difference) and EDGE (Excel in all initiatives) are the two most important drivers

guiding KPCL’S CSR Initiative. This is reflected in the commitment that the company demonstrates while doing

business as a responsible corporate citizen. With a focus on education and health care they have committed 1%

of PAT in 2011-12 towards CSR Contributions.

The organization structure for CSR initiative includes a core team driving the programs along with employee

volunteers that are monitored by the chairman, MD, HR Head and are supported for implementation by

administration.

The expertise comes from their NGO partners and a volunteering platform offers employees an opportunity for

contribution to a social cause with a sense of pride. Every program is based on the needs and expectations of

our identified beneficiaries.

They have adopted 8 schools in Hadapsar and 4 schools in Saswad and have worked with them in the areas of

education and health.

Kirloskar believes that an educated youth of today is a responsible citizen of

tomorrow

Education

In education their major schemes are as follows:

7 Swabhimaan – Scholarship after Xth to Bharari & SC/ST students

Their focus in education is the Bharari Scheme.

For economically & socially challenged

children

The selected students are given support in the form of school bag, uniform, shoes, notebooks, general knowledge books, SSC Exam fees etc.

Skill Development Program

The company has tied up with Madhavi Kapur Foundation which is a leading NGO in the field of education to

impart skills to these students.

Objectives :

Students will:

1) Feel supported

2) Become more communicative

3) Understand their own needs

4) Communicate their problems

5) Understand their strengths & weaknesses

6) Understand their responsibility w.r.t studies / work

7) Set and try to achieve their goals

8) Increase their self confidence and work towards progress.

Skills Imparted:

These students are called in the company premises twice in a year and with the help of this NGO. The company

imparts new skill sets to these children which not only enhances their academic performance but also develop

their personality. These include:

a) Goal setting ,

b) Time Management ,

c) How to take notes ,

d) Memory techniques such as Web Chart , Flow Chart, Fish Bone Chart, Mind Map, SQ3R, KWL.

e) They are also motivated to solve their own problems using techniques like Circle time and Theatre in

education.

f) Expression through art

g) Brainstorming

h) Story Telling

i) Games, activities to improve communication skills and personality development.

Reading Workshops :

The company also takes reading workshops for 5th to 7

th std students of Saswad to improve their reading and

vocabulary once in a week. They also have suitcase libraries in all 12 schools where story books are replenished

every year and helps to inculcate reading habit in students. The objective of this workshop is :

These workshops have started from 2011-12 and are giving good results.

Leadership Camp

The company conducts Leadership Camp for IXth STD students where they are taught about team goals, roles,

motivation, communication and time management through games and classroom sessions. They are then given

the responsibility of handling the suitcase libraries given by us throughout the year.

English & Maths Coaching

The company also conducts English & Maths Coaching for Xth std students at Hadapsar & Saswad which helps

them to improve their academic results. Last year in addition to Bharari students one whole class of Kanya

Prashala attended this coaching all year which helped to improve their Board Results of 44% in 2010-11 to 91

% in 2011-12.

Career Counselling

Kirloskar conducts career counselling for Xth std students through which they teach them time management, how

to prepare for Board exams, understanding strengths while selecting career, list of career options available along

with list of colleges in and around Pune & Saswad

Review:

• They track not only the academic performance of the students but also track them qualitatively.

• The company visits these schools at least twice in a year to talk to these students and find out if they are

using the skills taught, understand their problems, talk to teachers and parents to solve their problems.

• In addition, they also have a team of employee volunteers who work with these 12 schools to increase

interface with these students and understand the problems

• They have developed one to one rapport with 100% of the children.

Impact:

In addition to the 3 years observations mentioned above, 50 % of the students have improved their academic

results

Swabhimaan – Scholarship Scheme after Xth

From 2011-12 they have taken this support one step further and started a new scheme called Swabhimaan. The

objective of the scheme is to motivate the students for further studies and make them employable.

Through this scheme the company gives scholarship to these students for further studies like ITI, Diploma or

Arts, Science & Commerce up to 12th.

Students who opt for Arts, Science and Commerce get a scholarship of Rs 5,000 p.a for 2 years

Students who opt for ITI, Diploma get a scholarship of Rs 10,000 p.a for the duration of the course and a chance

for training in the company after completion of the course.

Thus through their schemes Bharari & Swabhimaan the company has taken a small step in living the philosophy
