SynopsisAt the Earths core is a fantasy sci-fi novel

written in 1914 by Edgar Rice Boroughs, the

same year WW1 broke out. The story follows

two men who build a prospector to uncover

minerals in the earth, but discover the earth is infact hollow. Inside they find a prehistoric world

called Pellucidar where it is always midday

because of the rounded worlds light source- a

sun-like ball of lava which is in fact the earthscore. The world is roamed by dinosaur like

creatures and a human like specious- some

good and some not so good

The book had a relatively good reception when

it was first released and has gone on to inspire

other authors such as H.P Lovecraft. A film

adaptation of the book was made in 1976

directed by Kevin Connor. The book was not aswell remembered as Boroughs other novels

(such as Tarzan) but many authors and critics

praised Boroughs for the indepthcity of the world

in the book, Pellucidar.

2Excerpts

A Strange WorldThere are a lot of environments described in this first section

of the text. During this excerpt the characters emerge from

their prospectors to explore the world, they find they are in a

strange pre historic earth type place by a sea with no

horizon as everything in this place is at a curve. The sea is

dotted with thousands of islands. Beyond this they discover

a forest in front of the mountains where a large creature lives

among tall trees intertwined with creepers. Among the treesalso live ape like people who seem to dominate a pack of

wolf like creatures.

The Mahar TempleOne of the characters is taken to a far off temple beyond the

sea. They wade through jungelous terrain to reach the

temple- and through another small village. They go down a

ladder into the dark temple to a room filled with a large tanks

dotted with artificial islands. On these islands cower terrified

inhabitants, and on large boulders surrounding the tank sit

hideous giant bird like creatures.

3Visual Concept

Although experimenting with various different angles, I liked

the idea of using wide shots throughout, with small figures to

signify how lost in the overwhelming world the main

characters are. I wanted the colours to be vivid-almost like

super earth, but with dark undertones and areas to give an

eerie sense of something not quite being right. I wanted to

create the effect of unknown in the background, as the

characters themselves do not know what is beyond eachenvironment.

5Key Scenes Concept

Beyond the ProspectorI chose this section as one of the key scenes

because there is a lot of scope for different

environments. In this I wanted to create a

sense of depth as the scene spans from the

ship they are (which I decided to base on a

ww1 tank- relevant to the time period and

also to the idea of man corrupting peace), to

the horizonless ocean and mountainsbeyond. The passage mentions the west

indies so I also researched some foliage

from there.

5Key Scenes Concept

Treetop VillageI was inspired by the description of the

village high up in the trees. I liked the idea

that it was in the middle of nowhere and

that the houses and buildings were all

linked together. I thought this would give

me scope to experiment with different

architectural options for the tree houses.

5Key Scenes Concept

Inside the TempleI liked the description of the temple and

the fact it was underground, it made me

think of caves which have scope for a lot

of dark atmospheric imagery. The

description reminded me of the caves of

drach in majorca, so I decided to look at

some of my photos to help with

thumbnails.

next I will combine these ideas to have a more definite

composition with more depth- a foreground, mid ground

and background.
