the plans for redeveloping knowle west, which are being drawn up by bristol city council and local residents, are fast reaching the point where they can be made available for residents to express their views on them. it is hoped that the plans, which will show options for the redevelopment of the area over the next 20 years, will be opened up to public consultation this september.

residents were invited to a fete at filwood broadway on saturday 12th june. they were entertained by morris dancers. there was a bbQ, henna tattoos and face-painting, as well as raffles, table-top sales and a bouncy castle.

the day was a great success, residents had a wonderful time and even the weather was beautiful! the event was a good opportunity for the community to come together.

we are now looking forward to the summer fete at the mede on saturday 24th july and the filwood funday on saturday 11th september.

knowle west health association (kwha), the longest running organisation in knowle west, has been awarded the Queen’s award for Voluntary service. kwha will receive a certificate, signed by the Queen, and an exclusive commemorative crystal, presented by her majesty’s representative in bristol at a special ceremony.

knowle west media centre (kwmc) was presented with two awards at the national ewell being awards in june: the building community networks award and the special award for an outstanding contribution to digital inclusion.

Local Good News!congratulations to broadwalk football club (based at the park) for winning, from the f.a. and somerset f.a., the regional chartered standard development club award, coming in front of 100s of other clubs. this is a fantastic achievement!

also well done to andy williams (secretary of broadwalk fc) for being awarded avon youth league secretary of the year! not to be outdone, 2 local women have picked up awards from the s.f.a.: anita pearce (secretary of ashton ladies and co-ordinator of school holiday football coaching at filwood playing fields) for ‘outstanding contribution to community football’ and joanne garton (manager ashton ladies) for her contribution to women’s football.

the hearts and stars awards are an annual event celebrating the work done by local volunteers on the estate.

this year’s event will take place on saturday 23rd october at filwood community centre at 7pm.

cracK dowN oN drUg deaLerS IN NewqUay road because of local people’s concern about drug dealing in newquay road, the police and bristol city council have been working together with residents to try and improve the local area and crack down on those individuals who are causing the problems.

some of the work to date includes:• increased police patrols in the area• extra funding to install two cctV cameras and to paint shop fronts• arranged for community payback offenders to spend two days cleaning up the area • target residents with lots of rubbish in their front gardens• a day of action to target people dealing drugs which led to four arrests and seizure of drugs and money

july should see your garden a

riot of colour and vegetable crops ready (or almost ready) for harvesting. but don’t despair if you haven’t been able to do much so far this year; it’s not too late to start now.

early carrots can go in now, for autumn baby carrots, as can early peas and summer salads: radish, lettuce, beetroot and salad onions. you can also begin to sow winter vairities of cabbage and spring greens.

the garden centres are full of plants to go into the ground now for crops of beans, squash, courgettes and peppers. watch out for spring bulbs coming into the shops.

plan wisely and you could have a succession of flowers from snowdrops in february to anemones in april.

at the end of the season (august / september) you will find that many of the shops sell their seeds at half price (or cheaper). this is an excellent investment for next year, but try to use them as soon as possible. Happy harvesting!

we are celebrating here at knowle west media centre, having just installed 50 dehems energy meters in knowle west homes. dehems (digital environmental home energy

management system) is european union funded looking at how technology can improve our energy use. participants can view their home energy use live on the internet. this knowledge will help participants to save money and reduce their environmental impact.

in the first of the project’s three ‘cycles’, 20 people received energy meters. participants fed back about the best and worst parts of the kit, which helped to structure cycle 2, for example, several participants expressed an interest in knowing how much individual appliances use.

heather, dehems user said: “i’m going to find dehems really useful because i’m concerned about how our energy is being used by individual appliances. i’m really glad that dehems listened to the participants requests in cycle 1 and actioned them in cycle 2”.For more information contact Misty on 0117 903 0444.

the sun shone on filwood green for the launch event of the university of local knowledge. it was a chance for residents to get together with their neighbours for a celebration meal, while sharing the wealth of skills and knowledge in the area. these ranged from bringing up a large family to war memories on melvin square and a recipe for spotted dick! bbc cameras helped to film some of the thousand stories from local people that will make up the project.

locally grown and sourced food was prepared by the community kitchen – and included a hog roast and parade of puddings. graham blacker (74) who attended the event said: “it was a glorious day, a great atmosphere and there was the opportunity to listen to people talk about what life was like in knowle west.”

the highly-praised ilminister avenue specialist nursery school and a pioneering footprints children’s centre in knowle are joining forces to become the first specialist nursery school and children’s centre in bristol.

from september 2010 footprints children’s centre will move from the park in daventry road into the former new fosseway lower school in knowle alongside the neighbouring ilminister avenue specialist nursery school. this building will be the new home for the specialist children’s centre, providing support for families of children from nought to five in knowle west. it will also provide health services for children with severe and complex needs for the whole of south bristol.

the centre will be open from september, led by pat rogers, currently head of the specialist nursery, which is rated as outstanding by the learning watchdog ofsted and is especially praised for its inclusion policies. miss rogers said: “this is a further opportunity to bring together the different expertise of both footprints and the nursery. all the existing services will continue and will be enhanced particularly by the extension of health services. developing our partnership with health will benefit the local

community particularly in terms of availability of access”.

the new centre will benefit from the hydrotherapy pool, sensory room and soft play room facilities as well as the extensive outdoor learning space.

lil bowers, head of footprints, who will become locality family support leader at the new centre, said: “it is a fantastic opportunity to create a much better range of services under one roof. ‘the idea is that we will be able to deliver all our family services and wraparound provision for children aged nought to five from 8am – 6pm all year round. we have been running services in this community for nine years now, and this move will enable us to make the best possible use of a fantastic facility. we would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff team at the park for all their hard work and support over the years.”

this is the first of three specialist children’s centres planned across bristol. the aim of the centre is to give families access to health, community and education all in one place. paediatric services from the tyndalls park centre in clifton will be provided at the new ilminister avenue centre.

celebrating age festival 2010 will take place at the exciting new venue of bristol’s colston hall on saturday september 11th.

this year’s festival has the theme of ‘you’re never too old’. entry is free and features include information stalls, health checks, food and an entertainment line-up led by acker bilk and his jazz band.

bristol city council are supporting organisations across bristol with advice and small grants, to put on activities for people over 50 in the week leading up to the festival. activities last year included tai chi, wii games, computer skills sessions and poetry reading.

over the last few weeks a group of knowle west residents have been coming up with ways to raise awareness of lung cancer.

in addition to a local media campaign, the group have been involved in local activities, even putting on an event for the world cup final to get their message across.

they want men over 50 in knowle west to know that: ‘if you have a cough that changes or lasts more than 3 weeks, you should see your doctor to get it treated’.the group are keeping the message alive through a skittles ‘cough cough’ cup tournament, bbQs, bingo nights, coffee mornings and social clubs. help them spread the word!

Autumn pipe walkevery year st mary redcliffe organise a walk along the route of the water pipe which stretches between the church and the ruge well in old knowle hill.
