the plans for redeveloping knowle west, which are being drawn up by bristol city council and local residents, are fast reaching the point where they can be made available for residents to express their views on them. it is hoped that the plans, which will show options for the redevelopment of the area over the next 20 years, will be opened up to public consultation this september.

consultation events and other ways to express your opinion will be widely publicised once dates, times and methods are agreed. as these plans will propose significant changes to the way the area looks and feels now, it is really important that you get involved to help shape what is agreed when the time comes.Contact CIP, tel: 0117 908 4247

What street do you find most interesting? all of them, they all have their challenges. What part of the job do you dislike? being unable to prosecute people who are clearly guilty.Who do you admire in the community? too many to single out one person. What makes you smile on the beat? sorting out long standing problems and making people happier. What are your hobbies? football (well cardiff city anyway) and my children.Where can you see yourself in 5 years? inspector in charge of the neighbourhood policing.

gardeNINg words by lesley belgium, knowle west resident

july should see your garden a

riot of colour and vegetable crops ready (or almost ready) for harvesting. but don’t despair if you haven’t been able to do much so far this year; it’s not too late to start now.

early carrots can go in now, for autumn baby carrots, as can early peas and summer salads: radish, lettuce, beetroot and salad onions. you can also begin to sow winter vairities of cabbage and spring greens.

the garden centres are full of plants to go into the ground now for crops of beans, squash, courgettes and peppers. watch out for spring bulbs coming into the shops.

plan wisely and you could have a succession of flowers from snowdrops in february to anemones in april.

at the end of the season (august / september) you will find that many of the shops sell their seeds at half price (or cheaper). this is an excellent investment for next year, but try to use them as soon as possible. Happy harvesting!

dehemS eNergy Project words by misty tunks, kwmc / photo by sue mackinnon

we are celebrating here at knowle west media centre, having just installed 50 dehems energy meters in knowle west homes. dehems (digital environmental home energy

management system) is european union funded looking at how technology can improve our energy use. participants can view their home energy use live on the internet. this knowledge will help participants to save money and reduce their environmental impact.

in the first of the project’s three ‘cycles’, 20 people received energy meters. participants fed back about the best and worst parts of the kit, which helped to structure cycle 2, for example, several participants expressed an interest in knowing how much individual appliances use.

heather, dehems user said: “i’m going to find dehems really useful because i’m concerned about how our energy is being used by individual appliances. i’m really glad that dehems listened to the participants requests in cycle 1 and actioned them in cycle 2”.For more information contact Misty on 0117 903 0444.

it’s international year of biodiversity. help to protect the variety of plant and animal life and also take pleasure in:• digging and maintaining a pond in your garden – even a small, basic one will attract all sorts of wildlife• making a small log/twig pile in a garden corner. lichens and fungi may grow, bugs and frogs will make a home and hibernate• leaving a small, confined part of your garden to grow wild; plants like nettles and brambles are a haven for wildlife• look into putting up bird, bat and bug boxes.

re:store has delivered furniture to homes across knowle west and knows we have some slick interior designers in the area. in this edition we thought we would do a quick review of 2010 trends in interior design.Mid Century Modern: furniture from the 1930’s to 1960’s, cool, urban and chic it is a look that allows you mix wood, plastic and leather with bright accent colours. Naughties Minimalism: all cream leather and pastel shades, a way to create an oasis of calm in your home. storage is essential; you can’t be minimalist without somewhere to hide the everyday detritus. Bo Ho Chic: reclaiming one man’s junk as another’s vintage treasure so make-do-and-mend. mixing bright colors with crazy floral prints, easy to do on a small budget if you enjoy rummaging and bargain hunting. French Country: a sophisticated look of mismatched chunky painted furniture and pastel tones. give your home an air of french châteaux.

the sun shone on filwood green for the launch event of the university of local knowledge. it was a chance for residents to get together with their neighbours for a celebration meal, while sharing the wealth of skills and knowledge in the area. these ranged from bringing up a large family to war memories on melvin square and a recipe for spotted dick! bbc cameras helped to film some of the thousand stories from local people that will make up the project.

locally grown and sourced food was prepared by the community kitchen – and included a hog roast and parade of puddings. graham blacker (74) who attended the event said: “it was a glorious day, a great atmosphere and there was the opportunity to listen to people talk about what life was like in knowle west.”

ULK aims to bring together the knowledge and skills that exist in our area and share them with other people. To get involved call Penny or Martha at KWMC: 0117 903 0444.

the highly-praised ilminister avenue specialist nursery school and a pioneering footprints children’s centre in knowle are joining forces to become the first specialist nursery school and children’s centre in bristol.

from september 2010 footprints children’s centre will move from the park in daventry road into the former new fosseway lower school in knowle alongside the neighbouring ilminister avenue specialist nursery school. this building will be the new home for the specialist children’s centre, providing support for families of children from nought to five in knowle west. it will also provide health services for children with severe and complex needs for the whole of south bristol.

the centre will be open from september, led by pat rogers, currently head of the specialist nursery, which is rated as outstanding by the learning watchdog ofsted and is especially praised for its inclusion policies. miss rogers said: “this is a further opportunity to bring together the different expertise of both footprints and the nursery. all the existing services will continue and will be enhanced particularly by the extension of health services. developing our partnership with health will benefit the local

community particularly in terms of availability of access”.

the new centre will benefit from the hydrotherapy pool, sensory room and soft play room facilities as well as the extensive outdoor learning space.

lil bowers, head of footprints, who will become locality family support leader at the new centre, said: “it is a fantastic opportunity to create a much better range of services under one roof. ‘the idea is that we will be able to deliver all our family services and wraparound provision for children aged nought to five from 8am – 6pm all year round. we have been running services in this community for nine years now, and this move will enable us to make the best possible use of a fantastic facility. we would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff team at the park for all their hard work and support over the years.”

this is the first of three specialist children’s centres planned across bristol. the aim of the centre is to give families access to health, community and education all in one place. paediatric services from the tyndalls park centre in clifton will be provided at the new ilminister avenue centre.
