W inter has certainly arrived in the West and caught up to the rest of Austral-

ia. Down the local club in mid June, and we stopped racing about 2 races too late. Torrential downpour while unrigging! But it does show with our sport, that there are diehards that sail rain, hail or shine! (tho, personally, I don't do rain). All clubs note that the new ver-sion of HMS (Heat Management System) has been released, so if your club/state is using the 2007 version, you should download the

2013 version from the ARYA website. On the subject of the website, Eddie has done a fantastic with the new, fresh-

er look. If you haven't been there a while, pop on over and check it out. Depending on the voting of the State councils, the next issue of Radio Waves may be the last hard copy. Will let you know!!

DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE IS OCTOBER 13, 2013

On Another tack…

A man fell overboard from his little sailboat, and was thrashing around in the water when another boat

pulled up.

"Jump in, we'll save you" - they screamed.

"No" cried the drowning man, "God will save me".

The scene was repeated twice more and then a helicopter hov-ered over the man.

"We came to rescue you" yelled the pilot.

"No, God will save me" was the response again.

The man drowned, and as he crossed the Pearly Gates, he ran straight to Jesus.

"I placed my faith in You, and You let me drown?!”

"Hey!" said Jesus. "I sent three boats and a helicopter".

From The President

A s all skippers would be aware, we are entering the period in which your State bodies ask you to renew your member-

ships.

Part of the money that is paid to the ARYA goes to cover the over-arching insurance policy that is available for all events sailed by Clubs, States and the ARYA. While the existing cover has served the organisation well it is seen as timely to review this policy, par-ticularly in the light of the court actions that were recently con-ducted in NSW between that State and one of its members.

The ARYA is seeking to obtain ap-propriate protection in its new policy for the national and state executives to ensure that these people do not wind up having to put their personal property at

risk, simply by undertaking volun-tary positions in the organisation of our sport.

It is also seen as timely to get a move on with the revision of our constitution. In a previous Radio Waves I mentioned that this was a matter which would exercise the ARYA’s mind this year and asked for members to provide any thoughts or insights that they may have. Several members did and I thank you for them. These comments will be considered in the mix.

As I reflect on changes in our sport there is an obvious growth in some clubs and a diminution of numbers in others. This is a natu-ral phenomenon, but it can be exacerbated by clubs introducing new classes into their fleets and thereby reducing the sailing size of the existing fleets. I am not suggesting, here, that we should not embrace new ideas and or classes, but I would suggest that club officials should ensure they continue to support the classes that are already enthusiastically sailed in their areas. In a similar vein I note the decreased num-bers, generally, at regattas. This is a trend that must be very disap-pointing for the organisers of these regattas and I would en-courage skippers to enter at least their local regattas.

Jul-Oct 2013 Page 7

I assure you that my comments are not directed at any person or club in particular and wish you all good sailing

From The Secretary

G ’day fellow sailors,

Fortunately for me I am a fairly large bloke with big feet, and let me tell

you I need them. Because I have found that I have had some pretty big shoes to fill !

When I took on this role I had no idea of the amount of effort in-volved in ensuring our sport pro-gresses, nor the amount of effort to inform all States and their members of various issues, which arrive on my desk from Australia and all over the World.

Since my election in January, Ken Dobbie has been invaluable with assistance and guidance, so to our President and the Committee. And I cannot thank them enough. I hope that so far, you are not disappointed in my efforts.

We have, with Eddie’s guidance, created a new look, more up to date web site. Feedback to date is extremely positive. Keep an eye

on the “Notice Board” section for up to date issues affecting RC Yachting both in Australia and overseas. This section will also allow the ARYA Executive to com-municate current matters to all sailors.

The decision regarding the future publication media for Radio Waves will be available before the end of June. Every sailor should have had the chance to voice their opinion on the “White Paper” circulated, though their State Body.

Disappointing that only 3 Australi-an skippers nominated for the IOM Worlds in Israel in October. Even more disappointing that 2 of these have been forced to with-draw. I only hope Scott Condie has broad shoulders because he is the sole Australian representative at the Championships. Final date for entry is June 15, maybe we will get some late comers.

Congratulations to all those that have had success thus far in 2013. From reading Regatta and Race reports, indications are that the sport is flourishing. Good entries, good, well run sailing and, for the most part, skippers enjoying themselves.

RG65s Arrive in Australia

H i Lindsay,

Just a note to let you and the ARYA know that the RG65 Class has ar-

rived in Australia.

The class has emerged with a number of boats launched at PLMYC in Victoria.

We held our first official event for RG65 today and had 6 boats rac-ing. The RG65 is a 1/2 size Mar-blehead. And sails like one.

650mm long, 1100mm mast height, 2250cm sail area.

Very open rules. No min weight or draught. No doubt you would have seen the class expanding in Europe, South America and USA.

New from Hales Micro: Surface Mount Block SMB-1

Blocks are supplied with two 2mm stainless steel washers, two plastic 2mm flange washers, a plastic 3mm washer and a M2 x 12mm stainless steel bolt and nut. These accessories provide for various fixed or swivelling applications. A typical mainsheet bulkhead application is shown above. The mounting accessories can be replaced by a M3 mounting screw if desired. Spread the arms of the bracket slightly to fit the M3 screw. The surface around this block may need reinforcement if it is used in the right angle configuration.

Jul-Oct 2013 Page 9

4 of the boats sailing today were Andrew Cooks design, Go Spec-tra. The 5th boat was a Lincoln McDowell design based on his IOM.

Built from scratch by Mario Gulic, it proves that anyone can start with just an idea on a hull design.

PLRMY is holding regular RG events this year.

We still have IOM, MM and Laser sailing as well.

Best Regards,

Bill Hutchison

T he second regatta at Port Broughton was once again supported by the Remote Controlled Yacht

Association and Ray Levi lent me on of his boats so I was no longer the Officer of the day spectating, but a participator which really fed my enthusiasm. It became clear the Port Broughton venue had many problems, tide waves and the danger of unenclosed waters. It was suggested by John John-ston from Adelaide that we look for another venue, somewhere in the Moonta or Wallaroo area.

After the first regatta, Ray and I kept in touch and he and his friend Larry made a mould for a 1940’s Marblehead Hull and I bought a hull from then and com-menced building my own model. This model is still a work in pro-gress!

In between the two regattas, we would meet weekly to sail remote controlled model yachts on the pond at the Archery Club at Kadi-na. This venue was fine if there was enough water in the pond or it contained no excess weed.

After many discussions Ray, Larry Youngberry and I came up with

the suggestion of the Wallaroo Marina. The big problem was how to obtain access to the Mari-na, but first we needed to estab-lish ourselves as a group and it was that, which prompted us to approach the Wallaroo Yacht Club with a scheme to form a sub group for Model Yachts. The Yacht Club agreed and got behind us to get started. Next was to plough our way through the bu-reaucratic tangle to get access to the Marina and the pontoon to launch from.

Our permanent home at Wallaroo Marina

Ray Levi took up this task and dis-covered that the water in the Ma-rina is controlled by the Ports and Harbours and the land under the water is controlled by the local Council. What a bureaucratic nightmare! Ray persisted and fi-nally Michael Nance received per-

mission for us, and a key to a pon-toon was supplied.

Permission was gained just in time to arrange a third regatta for the long weekend in October 2012. Once again the Remote Model Yacht Association support-ed us and added to the spectacle of our fleet. This regatta gained considerable attention and our membership began to grow.

At present we have a mixed fleet of boats with at least six more be-ing built. We race every Tuesday morning and each week there seems to be a few more specta-tors and people expressing inter-est in our group. The nearby hotel has sponsored us with a free meal for a monthly trophy.

NSW Soling Regatta

A round of the New South Wales Radio Yacht Asso-ciation Interclub Re-gattas was successfully

conducted by Basin Radio Yacht Club on the 3rd March, 2013 sail-ing on St. Georges Basin off Island Point Wharf controlled, as usual, by NSWRYA Regatta Officer Allan Bicknall.

Basin Radio Yacht Clubs express-es its appreciation to Allan, who travelled from the Central Coast and to the fourteen skippers rep-resenting Clubs from the Central Coast, the Metropolitan Area down to Tabourie Lakes as well as local BRYC members.

Faced by very difficult sailing con-ditions with strong South East to Southerly wind and heavy swells complete with white caps, more

correctly described as gigantic waves comparable to severe Bass Strait conditions for these Soling 1 metre Yachts.

Whilst unfortunately a couple of skippers had gear failure during the day, it was impressive to see them hurriedly make repairs to enable them to continue racing.

Ten scratch races were concluded in the morning

The close grouping shows just how competitive the racing was and it was noted that Leigh Grove despite his many problems man-aged to complete the series.

After a break for a sausage sizzle lunch provided by BRYC, racing resumed in the afternoon.

Although the last three skippers were unable to complete all races in the series due to gear failure but the other results show how excellently the handicaps were calculated by Allan Bicknall.

Trophies for the first three places in each series were presented by BRYC President, Fred Elphinstone to the successful skippers and the trophy for the over-all winner of the day went to Ken Smith.

Despite the difficult conditions there was excellent, close compe-

tition by all skippers who are con-gratulated on their skill and per-severance and it was obvious that all skippers enjoyed a successful regatta.

Interclub Challenge 2013

A group of Hardy, Dedi-cated, some might say Foolish but definitely not “Fair Weather Sail-

ors” gathered at the NSW Mid North Coast Town of Tuncurry/Forster, some 300 km north of Sydney for the running of the In-augural Interclub Challenge

dio Yacht Club & Drummoyne Sailing Club Radio Yacht Division

The Event; Conducted jointly by Forster Tuncurry Radio Yacht Club and Drummoyne Sailing Club Radio Yacht Division the event was to consist of a series of relay races with teams repre-senting each of the above clubs. Points were allocated to each team for each race completed in the same way that points are allo-cated to individual competitors in other events. In other words the first finishing team gained 20 points second place team 17 points, third team 15 points and so on.

Owing to the greater number of competitors coming from DSC the format was adjusted to form 3 teams. Each team was made up of 1 x 10R and 1 x Marblehead. In this case the teams were labelled Teams A, B & C.

Each race consisted of a triangle followed by a windward return followed by a triangle to the fin-ish.

The “Start Line” and “Finish Line” were one and the same

Each team chose their own leader and that leader started the first race. At the countdown to zero, the 3 Leaders passed through the

”Start Line” and competed for the first triangle. As each leader passed through the “Finish Line” that team #2 started through the “Start Line” to compete through a sausage. As the #2 of each team passed through the “Finish Line” that team leader passed through the “Start Line” and competed through a triangle to the finish.

Any boat passing through the “Start Line” before their fellow team member had crossed the “Finish Line” was recalled.

For race 2 the starting order was reversed and the #2 of each team covered the first triangle whilst the #1 of each team completed a sausage followed by the #2 com-pleting the second triangle.

Four races were conducted, each with 1 minute intervals before the first 10 minute break, thus both the leader & #2 of each team competed over the same distance in each set of 4 races.

Jul-Oct 2013 Page 17

Whilst the day’s events were threatened by the local weather, see above, we struck a lucky patch and were able to conduct 2 x sets of 4 races before calling a halt to the day’s proceedings. With eight races completed each team dropped 2 races for the points calculations. A perpetual trophy befitting the style of this event was presented to the win-ning team

trophy “Relay Baton” being passed from DSC RYD secretary John Wainwright, after presen-tation, to the winning team of Pat O’Brien (Left) & Paul Ziems (Centre)

Summary;

This event was an experiment to see if a “Different” style of racing could be conducted that would encourage team spirit and cama-raderie between both competi-tors and clubs. Those who took part took a little while to grasp the format of the event but hav-ing done so were soon encourag-ing their fellow team members

and got right into the spirit of the day. The general call at the presentation was that the event should be contested annually and planning has already begun for next year.

Those present said they would like to see a format of;

Each team made up of 1 x each of 3 different classes.

Each set of 3 races would have the 3 different classes rotating their starting and team order

All Sailing Rules would apply.

However the day would have a heavy leaning on having FUN & TEAM SPIRIT.

All in all, the experiment proved successful.

A Class NSW GP Round 2

H ere is a quick run-down of the FTRYC A Class Interclub round 2 event held at Tuncurry

race course on the weekend of the 26/27th May 2013. Foster Tuncurry Radio Sailing Club has again showed that they are more than capable of hosting a great regatta on a state level. This years A class GP2 event was attended by 9 boats competing in the two day combined scratch & handicap event. Numbers were down due to several skippers hav-ing to work across the weekend. Sunday saw the addition of two extra skippers sailing local boats making a total of 11. We had skip-pers attend mainly from Wollon-gong, Foster and two exceptional people from QLD.

Results from the Sat scratch rac-ing contribute to the national AR-YA rankings for the class. The Sun-day Handicap series is run to en-courage those skippers new to the class; and provide valuable fleet racing to gain confidence to enter A class title regatta’s.

The weekend started well on Fri-

day night at the Tuncurry Bowling Club with a very social meal with almost all wives attending. It was great to see so many of the ladies in support. This set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

Here’s some notes on the racing from Qld’s Yeoman Sands;

Sat, 25th, woke to an over cast day. Got to gate way to find it still locked, had to wait for key , there were eleven entry's that fronted the start line for the first race of round two of GP series held on the pond in the Tuncurry race-course, once the gate opened drove around to the inside track to the east side of pond to where they have a pontoon setup, a great site, no trees close by good clean air. The first day will be

scratch racing and the Second day handicap, the weather has come right, looks like we are in

for a great weekend sailing. The OD Phil (funky) Lawson set a course to suit the s/e wind, 5/15 kn, the first race got under way by 10am, with the Warrens Sword 05, Garry's Privateer 76, Jon 94, and Brian 91, Gunboats close be-hind setting the pace. Laurie’s 36, Sweet, Johns 14, A1 Robinson, Allan 03 Gunboat, Yeoman 61, Scorpion , Rays Sidewinder, in mid fleet having their own battle , and at the back end of the fleet the boys were having their own competition.

After lunch we had a couple of course changes. Stayed mostly light, (the PRO had to disqualify two skippers for bad behaviour and back chatting him??) Garry had a couple of wins, Yeoman after sorting out his battery prob-lems started moving up the, fleet , giving Warren & Garry a hard time, Brian was also up there, Ray was still having problems but manage to stay in mid fleet, hav-ing competed 16 races by 4.00pm. Warren in first place, Garry in second, Brian in third place. We headed back Taree to

local boy Craig Sargent sailing Garry's boat in first place , Yeo-man in second and Brian in third place. The wind swung into the SSW dropping to 5 kn and bring-ing a heap of weed across the pond making it hard to stay up in the top of the score sheet. The wind drop away to nothing for the last race to become a drifting race with half the fleet being fin-ished on the water, finishing a great weekend sailing, Craig Sar-gent won, Brian second, and Lau-rie third, after packing up it was back to Funky's place for BBQ and prawns… Warren’s win was well deserved considering the new boat. He sailed with plenty of respect for the other competitors + PRO; and we hope he can back it up at the next GP.

As you can see the handicap rac-ing was hotly contested with a great win for Craig Sargent com-ing down to the final heat and last few metres to the finish line; where he secured first place. Well done Craig. It was very encouraging to see four new skippers (Allan Thomp-

son, John Heard, Warren Norrie & Bob (FTRYC) competing, and we look forward to seeing you all again at the next GP which will be at Carr’s Park in Sydney.

A huge thank you to all the guys from FTRYC who put in to make the weekend such a great event. Also thank you to all the sailors, especially those who drove long distances for your commitment & good sportsmanship. A good time was had by all & we also look for-ward to the Doug Billing Trophy later in the year.

A quick spin around of the States (by no means a complete story):

Western Australia

The Perth Radio Sailing Club has an active calendar of events from week-ly club heats to club championships. The results seem to be shared around amongst a dozen or so regu-lars from what can be seen from the results. Graham Howie (A Class Na-tional Champion) and Glenn Dawson are stand outs with lots of good re-sults from Ian Sheriff, Jeff Green, Rob Mews, Ian Holt and John Goor. Active 10R competitions also occur at Champion Lakes Radio Sailing Club.

Looking back at the 2012 State Titles, it appears there is some very lively interclub rivalry going on there be-tween these two outstanding clubs. Jeff Green (Perth) won and the top 4 placing's all came within 5 points of each other.

There has been a surge in new boats and new members in this

state. The recent Mazda Trophy at Northern Mariners pulled in 20 odd entries resulting in 2 fleets being run throughout the day. New or evolving designs are helping drive this in-crease in numbers along with a very friendly and encouraging atmos-phere. And the sailors appear to be happy to travel. At the Mazda Tro-phy representatives competed from 8 different clubs from Foster/Tuncurry to the north to the Canber-ra boys from the south. There is a full calendar planned for the rest of the year.

Some outstanding results have been achieved this year by Scott Condie (National Champion), Phil Page (National top ranking) and Steve Sedgman (builder of the Aero which

has been the standout design so far this year and he also won the last two GPs) closely followed by rising stars Ian Hayden and Craig Sargeant. There are too many stories to tell here in this active class. Lots more information can be found on the NSW site.

As a side note: Ian Holt produced an excellent round up and summary of the 10Rs in Australia including all the new and emerging designs. This is definitely worth a read and can be found in the News section on the Home Page of the NSW Radio Yachting site here: http://www.rcyachts.net/nsw/

I’m having trouble sourcing recent information on the other states, so if I have missed you... sorry, but I would appreciate any news you have for the next article or even better send me a link for any on line news/results from you area.

Wishing you lots of lifts and plenty of “luck”.

T here’s still plenty of evi-dence of continuing re-newed interest in the class; particularly in NSW and QLD.

Several new boats being completed in NSW on the South Coast are boosting fleet numbers. Newly pur-chased boats are coming onto the water in several states.

Thank you to all who reported on A class events this year. Also would appreciate any photos of new and refurbished boats for publishing & discussion….

As always there’s an open invitation for correspondence on your state events and boat movements.

NSW

Warren Norrie WMYC recently took delivery of a new Sword ordered from SAILSetc. We look forward to this addition to the local NSW fleet. John Heard KOBSC has recently pur-chased an A1 Robinson boat com-plete from Brian Dill/Ralph Hymen. The boat has been beautifully refur-bished by John and we look forward

to racing with him at the upcoming GP events also.

Barry Grant KOBSC has recently pur-chased my Gunboat AUS 492 and has her on the water. I’m planning to build another Privateer, and have started collecting parts. Colin Vau-vert KOBSC has purchased Ralph Hy-men’s Sweet 6 and also has been on the water recently. Hopefully we can get Col up to some of the upcoming GP and interclub meets….

John Hall at CPRYC (Carr’s Park Syd) has complete A class for sale as well as several boats in various stages. Anyone interested can contact me for his details, or through the NSWRYA website.

Garry Bromley has available a series of detailed construction photo’s for the Gunboat design. They reflect the current thinking in the construction of this lighter Graham Bantock de-sign. Copies of the disk are free. We can also supply a basic sail plan tem-plate if required. Just drop an email to [email protected].

NSW GP1

Congratulations to Garry Bromley, Ralph Hyman and Laurie Hinchcliff for their respective places in NSW GP1 held under difficult conditions at Mt Penang gardens. Thanks to Northern Mariners for hosting; and welcome to the Jones family attend-

ing from SARYI. See NSWRYA website for full report.

NSW GP2

Congratulations to Warren Norrie, Garry Bromley and Brian Dill for their respective scratch placing in the NSW GP2 held at Foster Tuncurry. Warren’s win notable for his first A class regatta. Well done Warren.

Congratulations to Craig Sargent, Brian Dill and Laurie Hinchcliff for their placing in the Handicap series raced on the Sunday. Craig’s win no-table for the fact he borrowed a boat and had not sailed it before… Great win Craig; snatching the lead back by one point in the last heat!

Great regatta with awesome social and close racing handicap results. Thanks Funky and the gang at FTRYC. See NSWRYA website for the full re-port.

Next GP regatta will be at Carr’s Park Syd with CPRYC hosting. Check web-sites for details.

Unfortunately SARYI located at Pen-rith won’t be able to host a GP event this year.

T he 2013 Qld. IOM Champi-onship was a battle of Na-tional Champions.

It came down to the last race between former Champion Paul Jones taking the title from current National Champion Michael “Knuckles” Grieve by 4 points with Rob Nelson, current NZ National Champion third.

Paul & Rob sailing a Cheinz with Knuckles sailing his Pikanto.

While these three dominated most of the racing, the Fraktals of Doug Allen & Tim Brown also scored heat wins.

Geoff Morris sailing his new Blitz come home with a wet sail taking fourth on a count back from Allan Walker.

Day one saw sailing in solid A Rig conditions with B Rig used almost

entirely on day 2 over windward/leeward courses.

PRO Ian Ash kept the racing flowing with 19 races completed with the 2 fleets. All protests being sorted out on the water and skippers being well behaved considering the keen com-petition between the 31 competi-tors.

Many thanks to the Club Kawana members for hosting an enjoyable if wet at times Regatta and apprecia-tion to Ross Allan Truck & Trailers for sponsoring the event with excel-lent prizes.

Paul Jones also took out Round 2 of the NSW GP at Lake Macquarie from Scott Condie and Andrew Reid, both sailing Britpops. The Lake Macquarie weed once again came into play with varying conditions proving challeng-ing for the 15 competitors.

Andrew & Scott also competed in the SA State Titles, with Andrew tak-ing the Title from Scott & Kirwan Rob third. Scott Mitchell was the highest placed local in 4th. It was good to see representation from all States at the titles.

In the West, Harrington Waters host-ed the South Metro Championship. Sean Wallis sailing his new Psyco took the title in a close finish for sec-ond between Graeme Howie with his

Cheinz and Glen Dawson’s Obses-sion.

At the time of compiling this report, Scott Condie will be our sole repre-sentative at the forthcoming IOM World Titles hosted by Israel. No doubt the location may have some-thing to do with this outcome.

Tim Brown & Lindsay Walker will be representing Australia in the upcom-ing 2013 UK IOM Nationals to be held at Fleetwood. With 84 entries over only 3 days of Racing, days will be long.

Tim will be sailing his Fraktal while Lindsay is taking Craig Smiths latest Fusion design.

Micro Magic Australian Micro Magic Cup 2013

T he 2013 Australian Micro Magic Cup has been run and won for the second year in a row by Michael Grieve from Queensland.

Beautiful surroundings from the Wal-ka Water Works venue in Maitland NSW, home of the Southern Cross Model yacht club, saw a competitive field of 9 entrant’s race in conditions

that at times were very trying to say the least.

Day one produced 8 A sail races with very fluky winds, some weed and persistent rain just to keep us on our toes. Michael Grieve took a slight lead on 13 points at the end of the day, 2 points ahead of the local Bob Tonge on 15 points and Mario Gu-lic 3rd on 27 points.

Day two saw beautiful blue skies and A sail winds to produce another 17 races until the wind died off at about 1:30. Michael Grieve was always go-ing to be hard to catch but noted that the competition was a lot closer than it looked on the score sheet. Great racing in a typical Micro Magic spirit by all skippers.

A big thank you must go to all the competitors who travelled from in-terstate to this regatta, it was great to see 4 states represented 2 from WA, 2 from Qld, 3 from Vic and 2 from NSW.

A Special Thank You to Mal Davidson for his efforts at this regatta. Well organized and appreciated by all Skippers.
