This week, Digital Communications Coordinator Jason Giraulo, who coordinates the Birds of a Feather Fest,

finalized the program book for the birding fest, updated the promo video and assisted in arrangements for our

expert guides. Communications & Marketing Manager Cindi Lane sent out a news release about “An Evening with

Moose Peterson,” who will be our keynote speaker for a free community presentation a 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at Flagler

This week PCTV videotaped and aired the Palm Coast City Council meeting. In preparation for our two big events

coming up, Video Production Coordinator Tom Hanson began airing a promo for the birding festival and created

scheduling and production plans for the tennis tournament. The Birding Fest promo can be viewed here:

https://youtu.be/uYIvqgJND7w. Also, a short video was produced to feature some moments of a sailing regatta,

courtesy of the Palm Coast Model Yacht Club: https://youtu.be/1Wzmw9WQcTA.

Cindi also sent a news release about last fall’s Pink 5K raising $14,448 for breast cancer care at Florida Hospital

Drainage System Improvements: In an ongoing effort to improve the City-

Wide drainage system, the City began

working on a project that is intended to

increase the capacity and function of the

drainage system in the “R” section in the

area of Ramblewood Dr. The project

includes clearing and regrading the ditch

lines in the area to bring them back to

their original design capacity or greater.

Similar work has been completed in the

past years in the “B” and “L” sections of

the City with great success. The end

results of these projects can have a

dramatic effect on the look of the ditch

line. This openness change will affect the

overall look of the area while providing

greater capacity and accessibility for

ongoing maintenance.

Wildlife photographer Moose Peterson to share his photos, stories at free event Feb. 10

PHOTO of Moose Peterson attached

Palm Coast – Moose Peterson has traveled the world for 40 years photographing birds and other wildlife, and his photos have been published in more than 150 books and magazines.

On Saturday evening, Feb. 10, Peterson will share his images and the stories behind them in a free community presentation – “An Evening with Moose Peterson” – at the Flagler Auditorium, 5500 State Road 100, Palm Coast.

The keynote event at 7 p.m. is being presented by the City of Palm Coast. A limited number of tickets are also available for a pre-event reception with Peterson. Sign up at www.birdingfest.com. While tickets are not required for the free lecture, space can be reserved in advance through the registration site. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

“My passion for birds began at age 9 and has grown exponentially ever since,” Peterson said. “For 40 years I have traveled the globe, seeking out birds to witness the biology that makes each species unique, and bringing back those stories in my photographs to share the marvels I've seen. With nearly 900 bird species in my image files, I've been very fortunate over the years!”

“Come along as we look at some of these amazing birds together, the stories they have shared with me and the unique place they hold in our wild heritage,” he said.

Recipient of the John Muir Conservation Award, as well as a Nikon USA Ambassador, Lexar Elite Photographer and research associate with the Endangered Species Recovery Program, Peterson found his way to Palm Coast through the City’s annual Birds of a Feather Fest.

The fourth annual festival based at Palm Coast City Hall will be Feb. 9-11, with a weekend of birding, photography, workshops and family activities in “PeaCee’s Big Backyard.” As part of the Birds of a Feather Fest, Peterson will lead a Sunrise Photography Field Trip to Orlando Wetlands Park – an exclusive event open to only 10 participants.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear and see Moose Peterson’s incredible story,” said Festival Coordinator Jason Giraulo, the City’s Digital Communications Coordinator. “As Palm Coasters, we have a strong commitment to the environment, and we’re proud that our community is ‘Rooted in Nature.’ This event is a perfect fit for us, and we’re proud to offer it free of charge as a gift to our residents and visitors.”

A resident of California, Peterson is world-renowned for his conservation work. He shares his knowledge through his writing; he’s been published in 143 magazines worldwide and is the author of 28 books including Photographic FUNdementals, Taking Flight and Captured. He gives lectures across the country.

But he also continues his main goal of photographing the life history of North America’s endangered wildlife and wild places. Being a creative innovator of new techniques both behind the camera and the computer is the driving force behind his photography and goals.

For more information, visit www.birdingfest.com or contact Giraulo at 386-986-2484 or [email protected].

Pink 5K raises $14,448 for mammograms, diagnostic tests for local women Palm Coast – Last fall’s Pink 5K run/walk was one of the most successful ever – raising $14,448 for Florida Hospital Flagler’s breast cancer fund, which provides screening mammograms, diagnostic studies and education to qualified local people. Representatives of the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation and the City of Palm Coast celebrated Tuesday with the presentation of an oversized check at the City Council meeting. About 670 people walked or ran in the 5K, the One-Mile “Pink Out Your Pup” Fun Walk or the Kids Fun Run. The race started at the hospital and followed a route through Town Center last Oct. 15. John Subers, Executive Director of the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation, thanked the City Council, the Palm Coast Parks & Recreation Department, the Palm Coast Fire Department, Flagler Schools and Chairwoman Helga van Eckert and her staff at the Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity for their leadership in putting on the event. “We’re raising funds for breast cancer awareness and education,” Subers said. “We have, since we started the breast cancer fund, spent $120,000. We have done 611 procedures on Flagler County residents – mostly women, but a few men – and have touched over 200 lives.” “I know we saved some lives with our treatment and our screenings and our education,” he said. “So this helps put money back into the bucket so we can continue to do great things for Flagler County residents, the men and women of our community.” For more information, contact Palm Coast Parks & Recreation at 386-986-2323.

Animals require more than love to survive. They require food, shelter, and veterinary care. This can add up over time and they can be as expensive as having a kid! Please make sure that you can financial provide for a pet before getting one. Many people find out after they get the pet that they can’t afford it. Be sure to research the financial expense before getting the pet. Dogs and cats require annual vaccinations and veterinary visits when they are not well. Pocket pets, birds and reptiles require multiple cage cleanings a week with fresh bedding. Many reptiles require crickets or fresh vegetables weekly. Don’t get a pet without making sure that you can financially care for it and its needs. Shelters receive many of their pets because people have obtained them and didn’t do their research prior. Pets can be expensive and are not novelty items. They require as much care as you would give a child. For more information on the costs of pet ownership, call FHS at 386-445-1814. Donation Opportunities: The Flagler Humane Society Thrift Store always accepts donations. They cannot take in any computers/printers or large appliances.
