Urban researCHThe Urban Research Unit conducts applied research for the

administration of the City of Helsinki, for the citizens and for

enterprises located in Helsinki. Research areas include population

and housing, living conditions, regional and municipal economy,

city administration and civic participation, urban culture and urban

environment.

There is an increasing demand for comparative and evalua-

tive studies. Such studies are often conducted in cooperation with

other research organisations. The general outline and key research

projects are defined in City of Helsinki’s Research Programme, as

approved by the City Board. Important aspects of studies include

not only practicality but also scientific validity and close links to

basic research.

RESEARCHED INFORMATION

Publications are the most important channel for distributing

research findings. Publications in the Research and Study Reports

series are published online. Most of them also appear in print.

The Kvartti quarterly (including the English-language Helsinki

Quarterly) as well as the special publications on various topics

are published both online and in print.

The researchers in the Unit also function as experts and give

lectures at various forums in Finland and abroad. The general

public can learn more about research findings in the media.

The Urban Research Unit also coordinates and promotes re-

search that studies Helsinki in its entirety. In addition, the Unit pre-

pares the decisions for granting the City’s research scholarships,

the Helsinki City Scientific Award and awards for academic theses.

A DIVERSE RANGE OF URBAN STATISTICS

The Unit for Statistics and Information Services prepares and

publishes basic and thematic statistics, maintains and develops

statistical databases and registers, offers materials describing

the City and its operations to be used by others and provides

information services.

The city statistics describe the current state and develop-

ment of the city as well as life of its inhabitants. District statis-

tics bring information closer to the inhabitants. Regional and

international statistical comparisons describe Helsinki and the

Helsinki region compared with other Finnish or European cities.

Basic statistics are published regularly on topics such as

population, housing and construction, business life and jobs,

workforce and employment, training, income and services. The

population forecast is prepared annually, and thematic statistics

are drawn up on various topical issues. The first Statistical Year-

book of Helsinki came out in 1908.

The Unit for Statistics and Information Services participates

in international statistics cooperation. Partners include interna-

tional organisations and associations as well as European cities.

Furthermore, Scandinavian cooperation has long traditions.© C

specialises in Helsinki-related statistics and research and functions

as an information service point.

The library provides guidance and advice for finding the

required information and responds to information service

requests related to Helsinki-related statistics.

Publications of the City of Helsinki form the Library’s

special collection. In addition, the collections include statistical

publications from other European cities. Publications are lent as

home loans or as inter-library loans via other libraries.

Literature on Helsinki’s history is mainly accessible in the

reference library of the City Archives, where it can be studied in

the Researchers’ Room.

HELSINKIALUEITTAIN

Helsinki alueittain 2010 esittelee Helsingin 8 suurpiiriä ja 33 peruspiiriä. Kirja

kertoo kunkin alueen taustasta, rakenteesta ja palveluista historia-, tilasto- ja

suunnitelmatietojen pohjalta. Alueita verrataan myös muuhun Helsinkiin.

Aluekuvauksia täydentää tiivis katsaus koko Helsingin alueelliseen

Helsinki alueittain means Helsinki by District, and presents the 8 major districts

and 33 districts of the city their background, structure and services using

historical, statistical and town planning data. Comparisons with the rest of

Helsinki are also made. The descriptions of the districts are complemented by a

short description of Helsinki's urban structure as a part of the Helsinki Region.

KOHTI AURINKOISTA TULEVAISUUTTA

Kunnissa laadittiin 1970- ja 80-luvilla keskipitkän ja pitkän tähtäyksen suunnitelmia. Niiden tilalle tuli 90-luvulla strateginen suunnittelu. Samalla otettiin käyttöön uusi kieli. Vanhat PTS:n tavoitteet muuttuivat strategisiksi päämääriksi. Nykyään kaikki laativat strategioita - oikeastaan kaikki on yhtä strategiaa.

Kuntien strategioiden silmiinpistävin piirre on niiden samankaltaisuus.

Koosteesta herää monenlaisia kysymyksiä: Miksi erilaisissa kunnissa on hyvin samankaltaiset strategiat? Miksi strategioissa ei näy huolen häviävääkään? Kuntien tulevaisuus on pelkää aurinkoa. Mikä merkitys strategioilla ylipäänsä on?

ADVICE, GUIDANCE AND FILING

The City Archives heads the City of Helsinki’s records management

and serves as the city’s central archives. It receives and maintains

documents that are created by the City’s public operations and

require permanent storage and provides related information and

research services. In addition, the City Archives receives private

material about Helsinki, such as archives of associations and hous-

ing companies.

Records management also includes guidance and advice

to the City’s public agencies and public corporations concerning

archival matters and participation in various projects to develop

the management of documents.

The intermediate archives of the City’s case management

system Ahjo, located in the Meritalo building, are also part of the

City Archives.

DOCUMENTS FROM YEARS GONE BY

In all, the collections of the City Archives include approximately

14 shelf kilometres of documents, the oldest of which date back to

1569. Uninterrupted document series begin in the early 18th century.

In the Researchers’ Room of the City Archives, researchers can

study archive collections and receive help from the staff. The SINETTI

archive database is maintained for conducting searches in archive

collections and their documents, and the City Archives has also

digitised printed document collections of municipal administration.

These can be found at: www.hel.fi/hki/tieke/en/City+Archives.

The City Archives contributes to bringing Helsinki’s past to the public

knowledge through articles, lectures and exhibitions.
