Mfuleni residents have gone out on arampage and torched the house of acouncillor and the local community

hall.The incident took place last Thursday and

Ward 108 Councillor Themba Honono wasthe target, with the residents venting therage, setting his house, furniture and caralight.

Honono was out of town when the resi-dents, who had just been evicted from a landthey had illegally occupied by Law Enforce-ment officials, stormed into his house caus-ing massive damage.

Honono said the incident was “politicallymotivated”, but he did not elaborate.

“You cannot go to a private property and

loot if you are not happy about the servicedelivery. The ANC is not in power in thisprovince and people know where to go toraise their grievances about service deliv-ery...this is politically motivated. I do notunderstand this. It just does not add-up,”Honono said.

He said the looters went as far as takinghis fridge, microwave, clothes and food.

His Audi had broken windows and itsbody damaged, and furniture-which was lat-er recovered by some residents who inter-vened-were still lying in the yard when byFriday noon.

Thembakazi Honono, the councillor’s sis-ter, who rushed to the house during the inci-dent, said she was shocked to find the dam-age at her brother’s house.

“The house was petrol-bombed...luckily

the smoke-detectors in the house sprinkledwater and the fire was extinguished beforeit could spread. They stole television sets,microwaves, his laptop and other belong-ings.

Some residents gave chase to them(loot-ers) and managed to recover some of theitems...I thank God that no one was injured,”she said.

Thembakazi also said this was the secondtime the councillor’s house was damaged.

The first incident happened two days afterhe took office in 2011.

However, some residents were adamantthat they had done the right thing.

Patrick Yako said: “We are tired of falsepromises by our councillor. It is almost amonth. He promised us that he was going tolet us occupy the piece of land opposite the

flats,” .Yako, 45, vowed that he and others would

occupy the disputed piece of land behind ablock of flats on Ngubela Street.

Residents allege the councillor had saidthey could occupy the land, but that whenthey moved in, law enforcement officersbroke down the shacks the next day.

Thandile Mbuyazwe, of the Mfuleni Back-yarders, said, “Residents are demandinghouses but they go about it the wrong way.”

JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Memberfor Safety and Security, said the protestersalso damaged three City vehicles and oneprivate car.

Captain Nomathemba Muavha, communi-cation officer at Mfuleni police station, said“Mfuleni police are investigating a case ofmalicious damage to property,”

in power for 27 years! Not possible. Butthe news said it was. We listened to theBBC. We went to the streets. We sawpeople dancing. It was possible.Only it was not. Later we learnt that

the coup had been suppressed. The coupplotters had been rounded up. And thepeople were disappointed. You could seeit on their faces. This is more-or-lesswhat happened last week.At one time we were happy. At another

we were disappointed. Why? Because theman did not do the right thing: he didnot resign. He disappointed lots of SouthAfricans: black and white.And this is not about race. It is about

headed by the EFF they checked theabuse of power by the president. Theytook the cause to the constitutional courtbecause the majority of MPs are stooges.They are not there to fight for the

people. They are there to fight for oneman. The court found this man guilty. Hehas abused his powers. The funny thingis that not so long ago this man was oneof us. He suffered injustices like we did.But now he is on the other side. Hisgovernment, as Blair points out, is abovethe people. Question is; will they everserve us? Police nab a lot of suspectsA total of 488 suspects were arrested in theNyanga Cluster, as 12 firearms and a sub-stantial amounts of drugs and booze wereconfiscated at the weekend.The busts included 167 suspects arrested

for dealing and possession of drugs, while 12suspects were arrested for possession of un-licensedandprohibited firearmsandammu-nition.ConstableNoloyisoRwexana said: “One of

the confiscated firearms was used to shootand kill a 32-year-old man. The firearm wasnot reported stolen and its owner, a 45-year-old man, was also arrested for failure to re-port the loss of the firearm.”Arrests were alsomade for crimes against

women and children,murder, robberies andthree crimes. Most suspects are expected toappear in the Athlone, Bishop Lavis, Philip-pi andWynberg magistrates’ courts on vari-ous charges.

Meanwhile, 210 suspects were arrested in

theMitchells Plain Cluster’s clamp down oncrime. Suspects were arrested for drug pos-session, house breaking and theft, theft ofmotor vehicles, possession of stolen proper-ty, robbery, drunken driving, murder, pos-session of dangerous weapons and traffic vi-olations during stop and searches. 78 houseswere searched for drugs.During these operations, 1kg of dagga, 802

mandrax tablets, 278 grams of tik and halfa kilogram of heroin were confiscated and15 suspects were arrested for cases relatedto domestic violence.Rwexana said: “Cops are also going to for-

eign-owned spazas to ensure safety and pre-vent business robberies and xenophobic at-tacks. Seven firearms were confiscated andsix suspects were arrested. They are facingcharges of possession of illegal firearms.”Twelve firearms were confiscated in the

Nyanga Cluster and seven in the MitchellsPlain Cluster at the weekend.

Based in Khayelitsha, members are al-ready accusing its founder of fraud, claim-ing non-burial of members, and living infear of their lives after exposing the shenani-gans of the founder.The founder’s name is known to City Vi-

sion, but cannot be named because he hasnot appeared in court on any of the allega-tions levelled against him.He is also the founder and former Arch-

bishop of the United Nations ChristianChurch, which has since ceased to exist,with congregants citing embezzlement onhis part. Zwelonke Burial Association,which has about 500 members, was formedin 2015.Lieutenant Marcellus Rajap, corporate

communication at Khayelitsha Police Sta-tion, confirmed that a case of fraud was be-ing investigated by the police and that no ar-rests have been made at the time of going topress.Three committeemembers have come for-

wardwith information they claim is authen-tic, alleging that funds are misused and thata number of members had their burialclaims for relatives turned down without somuch as a valid explanation.

However, Princess Lusaseni, thefounder’smother,whoalsodoublesupas thesecretary, dismissed all the claims againsther son, saying it was only a minute factionof members who wanted to oust her son.The members said they started noticing

SiteC, chaos reigned supremeas othermem-bers were denied access by taxi ownersanddrivers allegedly hired by the founder.

“Only those who possesed receipts of pay-ment for April were allowed into the hall,”they further claimed.One of the agrieved members is Cebo Sit-

hole, who claims that he was not paid for aclaim to bury his cousin, Sylvester Kola,who died in March this year.“I think justice was not done there, be-

cause I was up to date with my payments.

Black publisher opens first Kasi bookstore after rejectionEven as hewas being turned down bymorethan 30 publishers, author andmotivation-al speaker Tshepo Nketle did not despair.On Saturday he will be at theWay of LifeChurch in Khayelitsha to launch a noveltyin South African publishing.Nketle now heads his own publishingcompany called Lesedi House will belaunching the first ever bookstore inKhay-elitsha called Passage of Black Ideas.“We established Lesedi House last year

after many battling to find a publishingcompany that would accommodate us.They kept on rejecting my first book un-til I was later joined by Pastor Xola Sko-sana, and we formed a partnership,” hesaid.Nketle said Lesedi House’s vision is toassist aspiring authors to get started inwriting their own books and getting thempublished.Since its establishment, Lesedi House

has already attracted the likes PastorNozewu who has published a book calledImihlinzo.Others include musician Don Laka whowrote the Re-Introduction Of African His-tory,NalediMoleo (SAfmpresenter), Andi-le Gaelesiwe (Khumbulekhaya presenter)and other authors.Their aim is to “reach out to African au-thors and help them get their stories out.”Nketle said the bookshop was the first

lo Ulutho Technologies and has 33 opera-tional branches in and around the town-ships in the Cape.He has recently opened more businesses

in the Eastern Cape.He sells second-hand computers, runs in-

ternet cafes, a computer school and installssoftware. His goods and services are afford-able, which means many entrepreneurshave access to much-needed technology.The Schwab Foundation for Social Entre-

preneurship is the sister organisation of theWorld Economic Forum (WEF). The win-ners were announced by the board of theSchwab Foundation in Geneva.The 11 entrepreneurswill get the opportu-

nity to attendWEF conferences throughoutthe world and interact with other globalbusiness people. Thousands of entrepre-neurs from around the world entered, butin the endRaniwas one of the fewwhomadethe cut.Rani ventured into entrepreneurship

while he was an accounting and businessteacher at Kwamfundo Secondary School in2004. It was the year the government intro-duced Outcome Based Education (OBE) in-to the curriculum, which meant teachershad to use computers.“Many of my colleagues had never used

a computer before and I sold them second-hand computers to help,” he said.He quit his teaching job to sell computers

norm. Deaths are a daily reality.Unlimited “human rights” are killing

the Black nation. The young are leavingschool at primary level and yet we areexpecting engineers, lawyers and doctorsfrom them.Every year the government is empha-

sizing on building infrastructure fordevelopment. But where is our nationheaded. Who will build the roads,schools and clinics for these develop-

ments.The only solution is to force the youth

back into the classroom, without adisturbance to the hours of learning.Every school must have a library. Nochild should be beneficiary of socialgrant if they are not attending school.Education should be a priority. The

quality and standard of education mustbe set to higher outcomes.Government should ensure that

prisoners do not have it easy, anddeprive them of any benefits.Do not make the life of convicts seem

tantalizing enough for people to brazenlycommit crimes, knowing that they areguaranteed three meals a day and freeeducation.

are bought with food parcels and t-shirtsin order to keep the government inpower, the public transport system isworse than it was. We are still deniedhigher education due to the exorbitantfees on registration. This goes againstthe spirit of the Freedom Charter.We are told that there are bursaries

available, but NSFAS is a loan scheme.It would seem that we were taken for

a ride in all manners of our freedom.This Freedom was imposed on us in theknowledge that the political space wewill dominate, but not the economy ofour country.

IRhafu nganyeinxulunyaniswe neqondo lokucuthwa kwamanzi elimiselwe ubuncinane kumyingewe-10% lerhafu yokuCuthwa kwamanzi edityaniswe kuMthetho kaMasipalaojongene naManzi ngokwesiqhelo iya kuba yirhafu esetyenziswayo kodwaIya kuphinde iqwalaselwe kamva xa kunokubakho ezinye izithintelo zamanzieziyimfuneko. Older Persons took place atthe Green Point Athletics Sta-

dium on Wednesday last week.As per custom, more than 4 000

seniors registered to attend theevent, which aims to promotehealthy living and active ageing.More than 1 300 of them partici-

pated in a host of races and gamesincluding Jukskei, 25- and 50-me-tre sprints, duck walks, hula-hoop-ing, boules, and bowl the hole.

‘This is the third instalment ofthe Cape Town Games for OlderPersons and the event is proving aspopular as when we first started.

This event is designed to cele-brate active ageing and is a won-derful platform for our seniors toshowcase healthy lifestyles.We hope that the younger gener-

ationwill follow their example andengage in sporting activity to keepfit and healthy, but also to steerclear of negative social influences,’says Councillor Suzette Little.

Off the track, attendees could al-so have free health checks done, in-cluding blood pressure and diabe-tes screening tests, and receive ad-vice on the benefits of a healthylifestyle.

The more than 200 seniors clubsfromacross the city participated ina march past to round off proceed-ings, including competing for aprize for the most beautiful ban-ner.

It all started as a training activity for offi-cials in the South African Army in 1990,but now it is spreading its tentacles to ac-commodate residents of Khayelitsha.Mbuyiselo Damba, secretary general of

Endurance Walking Association of SouthAfrica (Ewasa) is inviting anyone interest-ed to be a part of the club which is to beformed soon in the area.

Khayelitsha Endurance Walking Club isa partnership with Velokhaya Life CyclingAcademy and members of the public, re-

gardless of age.Damba said each team in the club needs

six people to be able to compete with otherteams. The competition is over two days.The first day sees competitorswalking 40

kilometres which is followed by 35 kilome-tres on the second day.

Those who arrived on the final destina-tion first, without running, are regarded aswinners.

“It is about team work. It helps to keepin a good shape in health.

There are people who are not good inrunning, but they can walk so this sport is

good for them too.We appeal to those interested to come

and join us,” Damba said.Damba, who is a correctional officer at

Pollsmoor prison, said they need a mini-mum of 20 people to form the sport in thearea.

The clubs are formed with categoriessuch as 0 to 21 years for juniors, 22 to 39years for seniors, 40 to 49 years for veteransand 50 upwards for masters.

He said the sportwas formedby the armyin 1990 and was adopted by the department

of correctional services, in 1996.There are series of competitions planned

for April 23 and 24 in Pretoria, June 25 and26 in Limpopo, August 27 and 28 in Ladis-mith in the province and the last one inNo-vember 25 and 26 at Pollsmoor prison.

It kicked off on Friday with defendingchampionsWanderersFConawinning startagainst Flamingo whom they beat 2-0.

Opening games were hectic with everyteam determined to proceed further in thetournament.

The sizeable crowdwhich came towitnessthe games went home pleased with the per-formances.
