    THE BELGRADE FORTRESS

    The Belgrade Fortress was builtas a defensive structure on a ridge

    overlooking the conuence of the

    Sava and the Danube during the

    period from the 1st to the 18th

    century. Today the fortress is a

    unique museum of the history of

    Belgrade. The complex is made

    up of the Belgrade Fortress itself,

    divided into the Upper and Lower

    Towns (Gornji/Donji grad) and the

    Kalemegdan Park. Parts of the

    walls and some individual buildings

    from dierent periods have been

    preserved in the Upper and LowerTown, such as gates, museums,

    monuments, towers and churches.

    The entire area of the Fortress

    along the river banks gives you the

    unique and breathtaking view of

    the conuence, New Belgrade and

    Zemun. Kalemegdan, the most

    beautiful and largest of Belgrades

    parks is also the most important

    historic location, dominated as it

    is by the Belgrade Fortress. The

    Kalemegdan Park is in the citycenter and easily reached from Knez

    Mihailova Street (pedestrian street).

    Kalemegdan contains the Cvijeta

    Zuzori Art Pavilion, the Music

    Pavilion, and the Great Staircase

    (Veliko stepenite), the Zoo,

    childrens fun fair, and a number of

    monuments, sculptures, sports and

    catering facilities.

    OLD BELGRADE

    The oldest parts of the historiccenter of the town nestle directly

    against Kalemegdan. Take a walk

    through Kosaniev venac, up to

    the Princess Ljubicas Residence,

    National Bank of Serbia to the Knez

    Mihailova Street. This pedestrian

    precinct and main city street, now

    protected by law, is one of the oldest

    and most valuable city environments,

    with a whole range of impressive

    buildings and town houses which

    sprung up at the end of the 1880s.Today it is the main business area

    of Belgrade and the headquarters

    of many national institutions.

    Republic Square the main town

    square is a favorite meeting spot

    where are National Theatre, the

    National Museum, the Monument

    to Prince Mihailo Obrenovi III and

    the Monument to Branislav Nui,

    famous Serbian writer.

    SKADARLIJA

    The old Bohemian quarter of

    Belgrade grew up at the end ofthe 19th and beginning of the

    20th century when the cafs

    were frequented by the leading

    lights of Belgrade cultural life. It

    is most frequently compared to

    the Paris quarter of Montmartre,

    both because of its appearance

    and its happy, ebullient, creative

    ST SAVAS CHURCHSt Savas Church is one of thelargest Orthodox churches inthe world. The construction ofthe church began in 1935 andit was resumed in 2000. It wasdesigned in accordance with basicconstruction principles for Serbian

    and Byzantine churches. It has a

    form of a Greek cross with a domeover the nave. It occupies 3,650m2. Its three choir galleries mayhost 700 members of the choir,whereas the church itself may host10,000 persons. The entrance isfree and the church is open untilmidnight.www.tob.co.rs

    PALACES

    Today there are two palacecomplexes in Belgrade the onein town comprising the Old Palace(Stari dvor) and the New Palace(Novi dvor), and the one in Dedinje,which includes the Royal Palace(Kraljevski dvor) and the WhitePalace (Beli dvor).If you are taking a walk in the citycenter, in the very vicinity of Terazijesquare you will find The Old andthe New Palace. A very nice park inbetween will give you a chance torelax and enjoy the view of beautiful

    architecture.Today the Old Palace houses theBelgrade City Assembly and theMayors Office. New Palace isthe Office of the President of theRepublic of Serbia.

    NIKOLA TESLA MUSEUMThe Nikola Tesla Museum is locatedin the center of Belgrade. It is a

    worldly unique scientific and culturalinstitution. It is the only museum thatpreserves the original and personallegacy of Nikola Tesla. It possessesextremely valuable collections:- Over 160,000 original documents- Over 2,000 books and magazines- Over 1,200 historical and technical

    ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUMThe Ethnographic Museum was

    founded in 1901. The collecting ofethnographic objects had startedin the mid 19th century. In its first

    days, the Ethnographic Museumpossessed 909 objects, 32 books,a small number of photographs, aswell as a valuable album containingwatercolors and drawings ofnational costumes, made byNikola Arsenovi. Currently, theEthnographic Museum possesses

    one of the richest professionallibraries in Europe. The permanentexhibition of the EthnographicMuseum is displayed on threelevels, and it provides an insight intothe everyday life and the traditionalculture in general.     ADA CIGANLIJAOn the river Sava, close to whereit flows into the Danube, just 4 kmfrom the city center, lies AdaCiganlija, at one time an island,now a peninsula. Covered withthick deciduous trees and dottedwith clearings and fields, Ada

    Museum of Yugoslav History Ada Ciganlija

    is surrounded by more than 7km of well-kept shingle beaches,whose water is warmer and cleanerthan in the river. The lake is idealfor mass recreation, swimming,rowing, kayaking, water polo, diving,wind-surfing and other sports,and a number of international and

    domestic championships havebeen held there. Ada Ciganlijahas more than 50 open-air sportsfields, including a golf course andcable-ski circuit. There are footballpitches, tennis courts, handball,volleyball and basketball courts, aswell as baseball, rugby and hockeypitches. There are also beachvolleyball courts and inflatable watersoccer pitches, and facilities for theextreme sports of bungee-jumping,wall-climbing and paintball. Foranglers there is the Ada Safari Lake,

    covering 6 hectares, stocked withprize and rare fish of strictlycontrolled quality. At this lake onecan find numerous cafes, clubs andrestaurants creating a maritimeatmosphere in the summer months.Boat transportation. It is aunique experience to arrive to Adaby private boats or small shipsoperating from Brankos Bridge andBlocks 45 and 70A.     ZEMUN GARDOThis part of Belgrade is situatedalong the right bank of the Danube.For most of its history, it developedseparately from the Belgrade, which

    lies across the Sava River, butdevelopment of New Belgrade inthe late 20th century joined themtogether in a continuous urban area.The Fortress is the oldest buildingin Zemun and is mentioned asearly as the 9th and 11th centuries.

    The remains that can be seentoday date from the 15th century.Walk through Zemun will give youcompletely different experience thenthe other parts of Belgrade, not onlyconsidering architecture, but thespirit, atmosphere and river facilities.

    AVALAThe mountain overlooking the cityof Belgrade. Nicknamed one of two

    Belgrade mountains (the otherone being the mountain of Kosmaj),it is situated in the south-easterncorner of the city and provides agreat panoramic view to Belgrade,Vojvodina and umadija, as thesurrounding area on all sides is

    mostly a lowlands. The mountainis covered with deciduous andconiferous woods and the Avalanature reserve has been protectedby law since 1859. It is very nice forwalking tours, picnic possibilities andoutdoor sport activities.

    and is widely renowned for itssites of exceptional archaeologicalinterest. The prehistoric site ofBelo brdo is right on the banks ofthe Danube and is a site knowninternationally for the remains of alarge Neolithic settlement foundthere, in a cultural layer 10.5 m

    (34.5 ft) deep and covering anarea of nearly 10 hectares (25acres).

    Each of the layers that haveaccumulated, and which markthe individual phases of life inVina (covering the period fromabout 4,500 BC to 3,200 BC)contains a veritable treasure troveof the most diverse artifacts:

    tools and weapons of stone andbone, everyday domestic vessels,richly decorated ritual vases, alarge quantity of figurines in theshape of humans and animalsin exceptionally striking style,jewellery of various rare types andexpensive materials and countlessother articles and works of artproduced at Vina itself or broughtin from distant parts from Central

    TOPIDER PARKThe wooded and well-kept TopiderPark stretches over 111,336 m2,

    in the Topider River valley, and for150 years has been a favorite picnicspot of the people of Belgrade.

    During the first decades of the19th century this area was fullof vineyards and country housesbelonging to the wealthy. In thisarea of ponds, reeds and rushes,the first park in Belgrade emerged.Between 1831 and 1833 plane

    trees were planted in what werethe old lime pits around PrinceMilos Residence, and they stillstand there today. The planting ofTopider was carried out by ableCzech gardeners. The centralsection made up of flower beds isof symmetrical design and facesMilos residence, finishing in frontof a stone obelisk (erected in 1859)thereby emphasizing the formal

    character of the area. After theSecond World War, regulation ofthe Topider River was carried out,which led to this natural complexbecoming Belgrades mostfrequented picnic spot. Within thebeautiful woodland surroundingsare the Topider Church

    (Topiderska crkva), the GuardHouse (Dom garde), and a numberof restaurants.
