DRDO Sponsored two days Workshop on Recent techniques on Road Safety
Management
The Department of Civil Engineering conducted two days DRDO sponsored workshop on
“Recent techniques on road safety management” on 6th and 7th March 2014. The workshop is
presided by Er. Kanniappan, Wapco India Pvt Ltd, Mr.Arunachalam, Chairman od Salem District
Road safety association, Dr.Gita Krishnan, IIT Madras and Dr. Partheeban, St. Peters University.
Theme of The Workshop
Pedestrian facilities in Road Traffic Accidents
Overloading on commercial vehicles is it safe
Roadway and roadside objects
Road safety for two wheelers
Safety for Roads – Drivers Role
DRDO sponsored two days workshop on “Recent techniques on Road Safety
Management
Nearly 100 participants got benefitted out of the workshop. The real time need of the hour
has attracted some 60 participants form other institutions also.
The more extensive effort to obtain a comprehensive, holistic design of a road safety system,
utilizing the methodology for the design of social systems developed by Del Valle (1992) has been
discussed in the workshop. Modern Road Safety makes a distinction between the situation and the
management systems necessary to control it, with prevention activities that largely exceeds the
self-evident fields of the traditional 3 E (Engineering, Enforcement, Education) approach. Modern
Management systems have the aims of be inclusive, i.e. to include explicitly all activities part of
such system. It can be used as an outline to assess the completeness of National road safety
programs.

Model Making Contest
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model
that makes the existing model obsolete.”
Models are mainly used as replica and they are important tools to demonstrate and lay out what a
project will look like in the future. The models created by the students were displayed on 8th and 9th
August, 2014 which proved versatile enough to show revisions or improvements done in the middle
of the construction process.

Chief Guest : Dr. Paramasivam, Emeritus Professor,National University of Singapore.
Date : 4th September 2014
National Level Technical Seminar - Climate Change
Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that
change lasts for an extended period of time (i.e., decades to millions of years). Climate change
may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around
longer-term average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change
is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth,
plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as
significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as "global warming".

Transportation professionals the world over have discovered and embraced GIS as an
important tool in managing, planning, evaluating, and maintaining transportation systems. GIS
for Transportation, named GIS-T by the American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials, has been used for diverse purposes:
•From modeling travel demand 20 years in the future to tracking a snowplow
•From analyzing the annual capital improvement plans to identifying noise regulation violations
around airports
•From improving transit service throughout rejuvenated urban centers to planning scenic
byways in recreational areas
National Level Technical Seminar-Recent Trends in Civil Engineering
Chief Guest : Dr K Muthumani, Chief Scientist, CSIR Structural Engineering Research
Centre.
Date : 4th March 2014
When looking at the latest developments in the civil engineering and construction
sectors of the economy, it is already commonly accepted that government policies are one
of the biggest drivers for change. With a majority vote and the stroke of a pen, vast sums
of money can be made available for investment in infrastructure and any company in this
field needs to recognize the importance of current affairs when planning for their future. In
2014, it may be tempting to assume that the economic downturn has taken its toll across
the globe, but the fact of the matter is that there are regular opportunities to tender for
significant contracts.
