Some of the rights in the Bill of Rights and in the original Constitution, were in response to the grievances in the Declaration of Independence.

Civil War (Reconstruction) Amendments

• Amendment 13 – abolished slavery • Amendment 14 – protects citizens against

actions of the state governments (intended to help ex-slaves)– Due process– Equal protection

• Amendment 15 – voting cannot be denied because of race

Required Responsibilities

• Obey the laws• Accept responsibility for own behavior• Pay taxes• Serve on a jury• Testify in court• Attend school• Serving in the armed forces if called
