JUF's Jewish Day School Night

The curtain is up on another CJHS musical talent showcase! This year's spring festival highlighted the talents of our vocal ensemble, our jazz band, and our special cadre of senior performers! Singers Becca Abrams, Elizabeth Barras, Zach Becker, Talia Canter, Sarah Comar, Coby Drexler, Arielle Kaye, Hana Lieber, Maya Michaelewicz, Emma Siegel, Gabrielle Pretekin, and Orly Schlessinger performed a seven part medley from Les Miserables. Arielle Kaye, Alana Spellman, Ayelet Spertus, and Talia Canter presented selections from smash Broadway musicals Oliver! and Once, and even our music directors Ms. Danielle Brothers and Mr. Peter

Roothaan appeared for a surprise cameo from Cabaret. Talia Canter, Tali Shapiro, and Jacqueline Geraty gave us "The Chain" by contemporary songwrite Ingrid Michaelson. Senior soprano Arielle Kaye performed Den Vieni Non Tardar, Susanna's aria from

Mozart's The Magic Flute. And Elliana Faletsky, Jacqueline Geraty, Liana Geraty, Jonah Glick-Unterman, van Gorstein, Joe Kupferberg, Yadid Licht, Jack Rubinstein, Josh Swatez,

and Ayelet Spertus, the comparable CJHS Jazz Band, took the stage by storm with a survey of modern jazz styles, the highlight of which was "Ayelet's Blues," an original composition by rising freshman star Ayelet Spertus.

Curriculum and Beyond

Tuesday evening, over 30 prospective families entered our building for Curriculum and Beyond to the lively music from our talented CJHS jazz band. Also on the agenda for the evening was the premiere of our "Student Life" video, which received rave reviews from our guests. Thanks to Tara Seymour for the countless hours that went into producing a video that truly captures the energy, commitment, and enthusiasm of our students as they experience life at Chicagoland Jewish

High School. Joshua Silverman, president of Va'ad HaStudentim, also did a great job showcasing the varied and rich opportunities available to all students at CJHS.

Not to be outdone, the faculty did a wonderful job preparing and

implementing interactive and dynamic mini-lessons. As the evening progressed, Ms. Friedman read and discussed passages from Romeo and Juliet, teaching guests how to bow and curtsy in proper Renaissance fashion, Mr. Bob Taylor showed visitors how to extract DNA from a strawberry, Sra. Claudia Linda led a Spanish exercise in CJHS school spirit, while Ms. Becky Charous explained the statistical probability of catching CJHS FEVER! Rabbi Ayal Robkin modeled how we develop intentionality (kavannah) in prayer, Dr. Rebecca

Schorsch studied Abraham's conversation with God to show how even leaders have room to grow and change. History teachers Mr. Joseph Eskin and Mr. Dan Kassner presented Hammurabi's Code to apply to a modern day scenario, while Gvt. Ela Moskovich played Hebrew games. Many thanks to student ambassadors Joshua Silverman, Eliana Kaufman, Avidan Halivni, Felix Rosen, Zahava Vales, Joe Kupferberg, Eli Schrayer, Bobbi Hochberg, and proud alumnus Daniel Fishbaum ('13). stalwart varsity Tigers defeated Fasman Yeshiva Wednesday night in the semifinals of the IHSA Regionals, 57-45. Senior Nathaniel Moses had 14 points, and three others added 10 each in an amazing, fast-paced game. Now, on to Arlington Heights Saturday night for the championship game! Two Torah teams will play: one will advance to glory! Join us at 8:00 p.m. for a rematch against the Ida Crown Academy Aces. Wear your brightest whites and come on out to Christian Liberty Academy (502 W. Euclid Ave, Arlington Heights) at 8:00 p.m. to cheer on our Tigers as we try for our third IHSA championship banner!

Debate Scrimmage

The CJHS debate team had a fabulous debate scrimmage on Wednesday. Thirty-one debaters from three other schools from across the state came to match wits with the Tigers and each other. They debated in two forms of debate, Public Forum (PF) and Congress. In PF, they debated the resolution, Resolved: Single Gender classrooms would improve the quality of American public education, and in Congress they debated various bills from the docket which will be used at IHSA state in March. Congratulations to the PF team: Josh Lederman, Henry Wolle, David Weiskopf, and Seth Wein, and to the Congress: Elan Karoll, Eli Krule, Daniel Silver, and Jonathan Schrag. Stay tuned for results!

Model U.N. is on the Move! The twice-decorated CJHS Model U.N. team is in a flurry of preparations for next week's big conference in New York, and thanks to rookies Maya Resnick and Arielle Small, the CJHS Model U.N. blog is open for business! Our students will post narratives, photos, and video logs from the Big Apple next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. Follow their progress at http://cjhsmun.wordpress.com.
