    Descendants of John H. ClancyGeneration 1

    1. John H. Clancy-1[1] was born on 22 Apr 1834 in Ireland[1, 2, 3]. He died on 30 Jul 1914 in St. ElizabethHospital, Utica, NY[1, 3]. He married Mary Ann Donovan Clancy on 1855[4], daughter of Jeremiah

    Donovan and Catherine Coughlin Donovan. She was born on Oct 1836 in Amsterdam, NY[1, 2]. She

    died on 12 Dec 1911 in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica, NY[1, 5].

    Notes for John H. Clancy:

    The family was living in Redfield, NY in 1860, 1870 and 1880. In 1860 they had a son Jeremiah

    who was born in 1859 and never showed up again on another census. John was listed as a Day

    Laborer.

    In the 1870 Census, the family was still living in Redfield, NY and John was listed as a carpenter. In

    the 1880 Census, the family was still living in Redfield, NY and John was listed as a farmer. In the

    1900 Census, the family was living in Utica, NY. He owned his own house free of a mortgage.

    He immigrated in 1854 and was listed as a laborer.

    John died of heart disease. He had been ill for about a year. His death certificate said he died of

    Organic disease of the heart. When John Clancy came to America, he landed in New York City. He

    first saw celery when he landed in New York. He wanted to bring flowers to the people who weremeeting him. He bought a bunch of celery thinking it was flowers. He went to work for the New York

    City Police Department as a janitor. He met his wife in New York City and they went to Oswego

    County, Town of Redfield to settle.

    He was found family in 1900 City of Utica Census, ward 11, page 8. He was unable to read and

    write. Came to America in 1854 or 1851 Naturalized. Owned a home free of mortgage at 256

    Sunset Ave., Utica,NY.

    He came to America 50 years ago from Ireland according to his obituary. He was a member of St.

    Patrick's Church and lived in Utica for 29 years. The 1887-90 Utica Directory listed John living at 38

    Perkins Ave., Utica and in 1891 he was living at 256 Sunset Ave.

    Notes for Mary Ann Donovan Clancy: Died ofDiabetes and had been ill for 2 years.

    Had 11 children. Eight of them living in 1900. Able to read and write.

    Member of St. Patrick's Church and the Sacred Heart Society. Came to

    Utica 25 years ago. Lived in New York Mills in 1888. Children of John

    Notes for John H. Clancy:John was a mill hand in 1900 and a bartender in 1915. John died suddenly at the

    home of his sister, Mrs. William Nelson. He was a bartender and a member of St.

    Patrick's Church, Utica, NY. He was not married.

    Notes for Hannah Clancy Allen:

    In the 1860 Redfield, NY census, Hannah's name was Honora and she was listed as being 3 years

    old. That would make her date of birth in 1857 not 1859 as her obituary said. In the 1870 Redfield,

    NY census, she was listed as 13 years old. In the 1880 Redfield, NY census, she was listed as 23.Therefore, I believe she was born in 1857 not 1859.

    Hannah had been in ill health for about six years. Hanna came to Utica in 1885. She was a

    member of St. Patrick's Church. Hanna lived at 904 Green St., Utica, NY in 1925 Census (9th

    Ward). The 1900 Ward 3 City of Utica census said she had 6 children with 5 of them living.

    Notes for Hiram Allen:

    Fred had been employed for some time at the courthouse. He attended

    St. George's Church. He was listed as a teamster in 1915.

    William was a retired wheelwright for the O. W. Mott Co. He lived at 1626 St.Agnes Ave. at the time of his death.

    Utica, NY[12, 19], M: 24 Apr 1911 in St. Patrick's Church, Utica, NY.

    in Madison, NY[28]. He died on 14 Jun 1945 in Utica, NY.

    had worked as an Iron moulder for many years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. The

    1887 Utica Directory listed George as a moulder living at 96 Fayette St., Utica, NY.

    in St. Joseph's Church, Utica, NY [10, 13], son of Bernard Burlbach and Catherine Burlbach. He was

    In 1912 Jennie and Michael owened and operated the Windsor Hotel in Sylvan Beach.

    They lived in Albany in 1914 and 1916.

    In the 1920 Harrisburg Census, Jennie was listed as J. E. Clancy and her daughter, Irene lived

    with her. Jennie was a waitress and Irene was a keeper in a Restaurant.

    She lived in Harrisburg, PA in 1925.

    In the 1900 Utica Census, Michael was listed as a clothing cutter. Children

    Notes for Gertrude Cathrine Burlbach Griffin:

    In the wedding announcement of Gertrude and Wilfred, it stated that they were

    going to make their home in Montana and were leaving in the train right after the

    wedding. Gertrude died when her row boat capsized in Oneida Lake. She had

    only been married a few months.

    1910 - divorced. Lived at 504 Sunset Ave. He came to Utica as a boy and learned bridgeconstruction work and was employed on the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. He was awell know athlete. Electrician by trade. On October 23, 1910 he was severely scalded when one ofthe caps on a high pressure steam pipe in the plant of Utica Gas & Electric Co. at the foot ofWashington Street blew off. Member of St. Patrick's Church. As a young man he took a prominent

    part in local athletic events and displayed ability of a high order.

    Notes for James W. Roberts:

    James had attended Utica schools. He worked eight years for the Utica

    Gas and Electric Company, 24 years for the Schiller Motors and for the lasttwo years with the transportation department of the Central New York PowerCorporation. The 1910 Census said he lived on Wiley Street and was amachinist. The 1920 Census showed him living at 1523 Lincoln Ave., Uticaand working as a superintendent in a garage. The family lived in Albany in

    the 1930 census.

    Walter was educated in Utica schools. He was a veteran of World War II and

    served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He saw service in Algeria and French

    Morocco. He had been employed for many years by Dick Smith's Restaurant inWest Utica. Prior to that he was employed at Firestone Tire Company and C. J.Fletcher, Inc. He did not have any children.

    Notes for E. Gardner Roberts:

    "Gardy" had lived in Syracuse for the past 25 years. He was retired from Ford MotorCredit in Dewitt after 23 years of service. He had previously been the Branch

    Manager for Commercial Credit in Utica for 16 years. He had received his B.A. in

    Business Administration from Utica College of Syracuse University and had served

    in combat while in the Navy during World War II.
