The Foxcroft is published twice a year for alumni and friends of Foxcroft Academy. If you are receiving duplicate copies of the
Foxcroft or have a change of address, please contact the Foxcroft Academy
Alumni/Development Office at 975 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.
E arly last summer, I was appointed Head of School while the trustees conduct a formal search for a permanent Head. Having served in this capacity once before, I am pleased to be able to help again. Foxcroft Academy has always been a special place to me.
I had three children attend the Academy, been a trustee and a student here myself. I am looking forward to helping this year in any way that I can.
The 2009-10 school year got off to a great start. We have 440 students, 82 of whom are boarding students from Europe, Asia and South America. They add a remarkable dimension to the educational experience at Foxcroft Academy and mark the beginning of a 24-hour seven-day-a-week program on campus with the opening of the new residence hall on the hill. Day program enrollment has declined to levels not seen since 1997. So, as the boarding program grows, the Academy is able to sustain the breadth and depth of our offerings in spite of the decline in local tuition support.
Adding to our strength are the gifts from our alumni and friends highlighted in this report. Last year, 456 contributed more than $235,000 to the endowment, operations, and special funds of the Academy. This is a remarkable sum. I cannot thank our alumni and friends enough for helping to provide the resources necessary to support the learning experience here at Foxcroft Academy.
I especially look forward to using my experience as a financial officer with our family business, Pride Manufacturing, for more than 20 years. My first priority this year is to support our outstanding faculty and programs. I hope to reach this goal through the prudent deployment of our resources, by developing programs that will generate income for the Academy and serve the needs of our community, by seeking secure investments for our endowment, and encouraging individuals to contribute to the growth of the endowment to ensure its permanence and the quality of our programs and facilities.
These being no small challenges, I encourage alumni to consider including Foxcroft Academy in their will, or other estate plans. If you need any help with this, please let me know. And I hope everyone will begin or continue to give to the annual appeal. Much of what we have today was funded by the generous gifts of our founders. I do hope that spirit of generosity continues into, and well beyond the 21st century.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with your own thoughts and memories. I would be pleased to hear from you. I can be reached at [email protected]
Until then, to all those who sent their support this year, thank you for your gifts. In a year marked by financial turmoil, we are honored that you chose and were able to give to Foxcroft Academy.
Sincerely,
Vandy Ellis Hewett ’75 Head of School

Mrs. Jamie Gaudion attended the Frost Place Con-ference on Poetry and Teaching held in Franconia, NH. The Frost family farm, located deep within the White Mountains National
Forest, is on the historic national register. Attending the conference were poets and fellow teachers from throughout the country, all with the common goal of fostering writing in the classroom and sharing teaching techniques to literature. “It was a week of intensive listening, sharing and writing, rounded out with evening lectures by professional writers.”
I am grateful to the Horizon Scholarship Program for encouraging and making it possible for both students and teachers to participate in opportunities beyond the classroom.”
History Depart-ment Head Mr. Thomas along with Mr. Willette attended a two-day Maine Department of Education spon-sored Advanced Placement American History workshop
at Colby College in August. The workshop was designed to highlight the latest trends in teaching Advanced Placement American History.
Mrs. Julie Willcott attended a week-long Physics Institute at Bates College last August. This annual event attracts physics and chemistry teachers from throughout Maine and New
England. Sessions included demonstrations on electrical circuitry, how to incorporate graphing into the physics curriculum, and using “clickers” to get immediate feedback
on student learning. She also participated in a lab demonstrating how various metals react to stress.
Mark and Stephanie Chevalier joined the Foxcroft Academy faculty this fall. Mark holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowdoin, Boston University and Fatih University(Istanbul) in English, Economics and Journalism. He will be teaching in the English department. Stephanie has been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) for seven years both overseas
in South Korea, Spain, and Turkey and in the U.S. She and Mark serve as dormitory masters in the new residence hall.
This past fall, art instructor Mrs. Jane Blay attended the Advanced Placement Profes-sional Learning Collaborative in Northport, Maine, Among the items on the agenda were
project ideas, scoring and evaluation of student work, use of on-line materials and options for Advanced Placement Studio Art in the classroom.
Ruby and Rob Canning attended a course for teachers of Chinese this summer at Husson University. Ruby works in the admissions office with international students and Rob
teaches English and Chinese. They are dorm parents in the Honors Dorm.

WHITE NAMED PONIES HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
Danny White ’03 hails from a family of talented athletes. His grandfather was the first to score 1,000 car-eer points in the late 1930’s. Uncles David and Trey Anderson along with his father Jere White ’72 played
football. His brother David, who graduated from FA in 2007, was also a football player. So when the Academy needed a football coach this fall, White was a natural.
Danny was a stand-out in football, basketball and baseball at FA. As he said, “I started playing football in 6th grade.” He went on to play baseball at Husson University, graduating in 2007 with a degree in business administration.
He has served as assistant basketball coach at FA for three years and was assistant football coach last year. This helped prepare him for the head coach spot he stepped into this fall.
Of his style, he says it’s all about getting the best out of his team. They need to be “mentally prepared,” he added. “First and foremost, of course, is their education. Most of our players will never go on to NCAA Division I or the NFL. They are in high school once. That should be their priority right now,” White added.
White inherited five co-captains, exper-ienced players on a mission to capture the title this year, along with veteran coaches Gary Worthing, Tom Nason ’80, Mark Stroud and Joe Champeon ’78. Stroud’s and Champeon’s sons are captains on the team.
The Ponies have been fortunate, he said. ‘We’ve always had a good core of leader-ship.” “Filling holes left by graduating seniors always is a challenge,” White said. “But each year we have players willing to step up and continue the great Pony tradition”.
This year the team is looking to repeat their 2003 Division Championship perform-ance. That was the year Danny was named Class “C” MVP as a running back for the Ponies.
“This year’s team feels like they are on a mission --something to make up for when they went down to Division champions John Bapst in a close match last year,” White said. “There’s a lot of spirit. They want that trophy.”
When he is not on the practice field, Danny is in leadership training at Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union. He will spend part of next summer in their executive training program in Wisconsin. He and his wife Tara Stone ’03, live in Sebec.

6 FOXCROFT ACADEMY ALUMNUS
Scaling New HeightsBy Elissa McNeil ’10
Though I wasn’t sure about applying for a Horizon Scholarship to join Outward Bound last summer, I said, “You can do this. Don’t worry.” So I did.
There were a couple of reasons why. The most important was that it would be a challenge. Of course, getting in shape would be a bonus, but I had no idea that climbing Big Spencer Mountain in the north woods of Maine could do such damage to your legs!
Our group camped at the summit and I have never seen anything so beautiful as the sunset that day. The next day we hiked, or should I say, bushwhacked through the woods. It took two days to get back to Spencer Bay on Moosehead Lake.
All the while, storms flooded the rivers and blocked trails. But we finally made it. From Spencer Bay we canoed five or six hours every day until we reached Duck Cove. That was the beginning of our “solo.”
The idea of the “solo” journey is to get in touch with ourselves. I thought about my life, how I often take things for granted – especially my dad. He is the reason I keep going when times get tough. Then I thought about my senior year at Foxcroft Academy and how this is the year I’ve been waiting for and how much fun I’m going to have.
After my “solo,” I rejoined the group. The final challenge was a four-mile run at which I mostly walked. In our camp circle that night, we shared our experiences. Many said they saw me as a leader, something which I could never see myself as.
There are many things I thought I could not do until I made this journey. It showed me that I could do anything I really wanted if I tried. I came out with scars, muscle aches and pains, tanned legs, new friends and experiences and skills I hope I will have for the rest of my life.
Student Attends Harvard Course via the InternetBy Paige Miles ’10
The Horizon Scholarship opened up a great opportunity for me! I was able to take an online class through Harvard about Neurobiology. The class covered the biology, anatomy and chemistry of the brain and nervous system. It brought together how this works in an interesting manner. The Professor, Dr. Murphy, taught my classmates and I about the different parts of
the brain and nervous system. This class enabled me to expand my horizons and look into a subject field which I one day hope to receive a doctorate in. The class also showed me how rigorous college work can be and what one has to do to pass. The three exams that were given during the course were taken at Harvard. This allowed me to see the
campus and what a real college classroom is like. The exams were both exciting and nerve racking. The scholarship has allowed me to gain a once in a lifetime experience and I am very appreciative of it! I would like to thank the families of Everett & Evelyn Hall Johnston ’28 who gave to make this experience possible.

O n the morning of November 8, 2008, Foxcroft Academy lost one of our treasured faculty members of the English Department, Jim Brown, also an alumnus of the Class of 1970. At the request of his family, a memorial fund was established to benefit a student wishing to pursue a learning opportunity outside the walls of Foxcroft Academy, otherwise known as a Horizon
Scholarship. This past year the Jim Brown Horizon Scholarship was presented to Elissa McNeil ’10 allowing her to participate in an Outward Bound program here in Maine. (see article pg. 6)
Mr. Brown was again honored at a faculty meeting held this past September. Jim’s wife, Barbara Brown, was presented with a trustee chair honoring Jim’s years of service by trustee Donna Hathaway. Mrs. Hathaway recalled how, for 34 years, Mr. Brown inspired generations of students. She ended her presentation by reciting the essay by Lynn Keyworth, How Do You Measure the Worth of a Man?
Following the ceremony, faculty members greeted Mrs. Brown with their own recollections of Jim and expressed their appreciation for all he had done to help his students as well as the community where he lived, taught, and raised their family.
The following is a list of donors who gave to that fund as well as those who gave to the 2008-09 Annual Giving Campaign in memory of Mr. Brown.
Scholarship Fund in memory of Jim Brown Helps Student Attend Outward Bound
Libby Family Establishes FundIn the summer of 2008, the Glenn Merle and Margaret G. Libby Fund was established through the bequests of Glenn Merle and
Margaret G. Libby and dedicated to the general endowment of Foxcroft Academy. This Fund joins others created by the Libby family including the David O. Libby Fund established in 1997 in memory of their son, David ’64, as well as the Foster and Theodora Gray Fund established by the bequests of Foster and Theodora Gray, brother and sister-in-law of Margaret G. Libby.
The Libby and Gray families have been supporters of education at Foxcroft Academy for many years. Margaret graduated in 1935 and her sister Dorothy in 1938. Her father Clair and brother Foster did not graduate for personal reasons, but Glenn moved from the area before graduation. Members of the Gray and Libby families also gave generously to the campaign to construct the gymnasium.
The trustees of Foxcroft Academy are grateful for the care and thought demonstrated by the Libby family and for their gifts that will be used to preserve the quality of programs and assist those who manage them at Foxcroft Academy in perpetuity.

Egyptian Museum Director Returns to Visit Foxcroft Academy
Dr. Wafaa El Saddik, Director of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and mother of Foxcroft senior Hadi El Rabbat, spent five days at the Academy last spring during which she gave presentations on topics ranging from the Egyptian Museum’s permanent collection to the exhibit there on Tutankhamun and the lost City of Atlantis. Dr. El Saddik also lectured on the Islamic faith and added several pieces to the Academy’s collection of replica artifacts contained in the Egyptian Museum, a collection she began during her visit last year. While at the Academy, Dr. El Saddik’s husband, Dr. Azmy El Rabbat, lectured in science classes on the medicine of ancient Egypt and mummification.
Hewett Appointed Head of School
Peter Culley ’61, President of Foxcroft Academy’s Board of Trustees, announced that the board has appointed Vandy Ellis Hewett ’75 as the new Head of School. Earlier the
board accepted the resignation of Dr. Raymond Webb who served as Head since 2005. In addition to being an alumna and parent, Mrs. Hewett has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1990. As a trustee, she served as President, Vice-Presi-dent, Secretary, Chair of Superintending Committee, Chair of Scholarship Committee, and a member of both the Buildings and Grounds and Finance Committees. Prior to beginning her new duties, Mrs. Hewett was the chief financial officer at Pride Manufac-turing for 17 years and worked in Bangor at Abundant Life Church as its Treasurer. Mrs. Hewett lives in Dover Foxcroft with her husband Russ Hewett ’73 who will be teaching part-time in the music department.
Alumna Recognized for Volunteer Service
Foxcroft Academy welcomed Nancy Stone Page ’60 back to school this fall. Nancy worked as a guidance counselor at Foxcroft Academy between 1978 and1985. Last summer, Jay Brennan, Associate Head for Admissions and Residential Life, asked Nancy if she would like to help out in the new dorm with the arrival of a new class of international students. Nancy thought it would be wonderful opportunity and has been coming one or two evenings each week helping students with their studies during the dorm “structured study time.” During the day, Nancy has been helping out in the main office and in counseling services. “It’s great to see alumni helping around the Academy”, said Vandy Hewett, Head of School. “We will miss Nancy when she and husband Rick ’60 return to Florida for the winter. But are looking forward to her return next May. We already have a list of items needing Nancy’s special attention,” Hewett added.

1937 Class Endowment Nears Completion
A few years ago, Martha Green Rollins and classmates Murray Stanhope and Margaret Sanborn Webber got together to talk about establishing an endowment fund to honor the Class of 1937. With Martha’s able assistance as class secretary, the class has been meeting every five years since their tenth reunion in 1947. By the 65th reunion in 2002, only a few were still able to return. When classmate Bill Davis passed away in 2003, it was the suggestion of his son Rick ’68 to begin an endowment to honor the memory of his father and other deceased members of the class. The
idea took off. Martha got the word out. To date, more than $4,800 has been received toward the goal of $5,000 needed to name the fund. “I only wish we had started earlier,” Martha said of their efforts. “But it looks like we’ll make it for sure now.”
An option for classmates to consider would be to name the 1937 Fund in their will. Gifts will be placed in the Fund as part of the Academy’s permanent endowment. After the Fund reaches the goal of $5,000, only interest income will be spent to benefit Foxcroft Academy.
“If every class did something like this, it would be enormously helpful to the Academy,” said Ted Randall, Director of Development and Alumni. “And it’s so easy to do,” he added.
For more information about the Class of 1937 Endowment, or how to set up an endowment fund to honor or memorialize your class, call the Alumni Office at Foxcroft Academy (207) 564-6542.

Bud has offered his plane and piloting skills in the past and we are deeply grateful for his assistance and his love of flying.
Day Students Tour New Residence Hall
Area day students were invited to tour the new residence hall during the opening days of school in September. Residents in the new hall represent eleven countries and comprise slightly more than half the 82 international student population enrolled at the Academy in the fall term.
Designed by Portland architects Scott Simons, the new hall is home to 48 students and six faculty families. 24 boys and 24 girls occupy the east and west wings of the building respectively. Faculty families live in apartments at each end of the building. Wondering if they could visit their boarding friends in the new hall, Director of Residential Life and Admissions Jay Brennan invited and encouraged them to visit as often as they like. After the tour, day student comments ranged from, “what a beautiful building” to, “I wish I had a room like that.”
Head of School Search Committee Outlines Steps
Over the next several months, the trustees of Foxcroft Academy will be con-ducting a search for a new Head of School.Leading that effort will be board Vice-Chair Ken Hews ’65. The first step in the process was to develop a description of the skills and competencies the Academy is seeking in its next leader. This information was gathered in conversations with all the constituencies that make up the Foxcroft Academy community including faculty, staff and students in September. Then a team

Dr. Mary Chandler-Lowell Award Recipient 2009 Arthur “Skip” Hanson ’62
The Dr. Mary Chandler-Lowell Award is named for one of the first women to earn the degree of Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Law and Doctor of Jurisprudence. When describing Foxcroft Acad-emy in her book Old Foxcroft she states, “She (Foxcroft Academy) has experienced her anxieties, perplexities, indeed earnest struggles; but her children have kept their faith and been loyal in her support, and her Board of Trustees have labored fearlessly.” As recipient of this award, Skip joins Dave Mallett ’69, Susan Stitham ’61, and last year’s award winner, Lt. Col. Daniel Joyce ’77.
Skip Hanson ’62 earned his BS in education from the University of Maine at Presque Isle and subsequently his Master’s from UMO. He received his doctorate in education from the Nova Southeastern University and went on to post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.
In 1967 he began his teaching career at Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, Maine, and in 1969 entered the halls of Foxcroft Academy as a teacher, coach, assistant head and athletic director, a position he held until 1980. In 2008, Skip retired as superintendent of schools in Exeter, NH, after 11 years. Throughout his career he oversaw both new construction and renovations to many schools, as well as co-founding two charter schools in Exeter.
However, in the historical annals of Foxcroft Academy, Skip is perhaps best known for coaching the 1975 State Class B cham-pionship team. He remains close with many members of that team today including Kevin Nelson, David Ingraham, Jeff Dunn, and Dick Hatt, to name a few.
Skip had many family members in attendance at the Alumni Banquet to see him receive his award. They include his wife Peg; son and daughter-in-law Chad and Joy; his granddaughter Reagan; his two sisters Rhonda Hanson Weaver ’67 and her husband Lloyd and Sharon Hanson Young ’60; as well as his mother Jean and two grandsons Thomas and Kyle. Also joining the Hanson table was a familiar face to the 70’s grads of FA: Rusty Clukey and his wife Bonnie. Rusty taught, was assistant football coach, head wrestling coach, and assisted Skip with his 1975 championship basketball team. Rusty is currently in the cabinet of the county school district in Naples, Florida.

Mr. Gary Wakeland Presented the Tillson D. Thomas Award
Retired faculty member Gary Wakeland was presented the Tillson D. Thomas Award, given to a former faculty or staff member who, in the opinion of their former students, have served the students of Foxcroft Academy with the highest degree of profes-sionalism. Gary joins other award winners: Bob Beek, Constance MacPherson, and Dick Millett. Gary was nominated in 2005 by a member of the Class of 1989 Capt. Bruce M. Drake, United States Army, who said “his love of government and history helped fuel his desire to serve his country.” Very fitting given that our award winner is a retired Air Force veteran who ended his military career with a rank of major. After that, he entered the field of education.
Bruce was contacted by the Alumni Office for any further com-ments regarding his former teacher and here is what he said: “His willingness to give his time to me and the many other young men and women who have attended FA has created a legacy that has extended far beyond the tiled walls of FA.” “Knowledge is Power” still rever-berates through my own mind when I counsel young soldiers when they wonder what they will do in their future.” Capt. Drake is sched-uled to retire in 2013 and has an agreement to teach US History and Earth Science at a small community college in the Atlanta area.
Gary was head coach of the wrestling team, along with assisting with varsity track. In 2000-01 he had five state champion wrestlers. He also coached JV boys’ basketball. For years he and his wife Peg sold football tickets when we had the old field with no fence. They are the parents of four children: Teri Wakeland Mace, Tim Wakeland, Tami Wakeland Flanders ’85, and Ted Wakeland ’86. Two of their granddaughters play basketball for the Academy, something they enjoy following when not in Florida.

The two people who traveled the farthest to attend the Alumni Banquet were from this class: Ryan Varnum and Joan Cross Forester. Thank you to all for making it a great 40th!

Fifty Classmates for the 50th!Motto for the Class of 1960
By now many of you have heard from Danny Chase, Pep Squad Leader for the 50th reunion to be held August 6 – 9, 2010. He cleverly thought up the motto, hoping to have at least 50 class-mates in attendance. He has asked Walter Lougee and Cyrus Doore to plan a memorial display for the parade to honor classmates who have died. Steve Hall is finding something to ride on in the parade and planning the Friday night decorating fest. Joe Zilinksy is doing name tags. Charlie Merrill and his wife Jane are hosting a barbecue at their camp on Sebec Lake on Thursday night, August 6th. Nancy Stone Page is working on the creation of a class fund. Rick Page is organizing a breakfast at the Bear’s Den for Sunday morning. Danny already has verbal responses from many classmates who are planning on attending the reunion. For further info, contact Danny at (830)990-2980 or [email protected]
