You might be forgiven for not recognising Classic, Performance & Retro this month since this is the first issue for a while that hasn’t had a Ferrari on the cover! Yep, finally we have an everyday, affordable classic on the front page. That doesn’t mean that the Wolseley 8 is an ordinary car…far from it. In fact there are only 22 examples of the type known to survive and the delightful car in our ten-page feature is one of them. The car really was one of those genuine ‘barn finds’ and it’s great to see it back on the road where it belongs.Bringing things right up to date, it seems the ‘supercar’ manufacturers over in Italy have been rather busy lately. Pagani have just revealed its replacement for the iconic Zonda, although it is rapidly becoming known as the Pagani Thingy, thanks to its almost unpronounceable name! The Thingy…sorry, the Huayra, looks like it is going to pick up where the Zonda left off, and if the published performance figures are anything to go by, boy it’s going to be fast!Another new car to emerge from Italy recently is the Ferrari FF. Apparently, the FF stands for ‘four-wheel drive’ and ‘four seater’ since these are both attributes of the new car. It’s certainly a break from the norm as far as the Maranello builder is concerned and few would have expected Ferrari to produce a ‘shooting brake’ style car, but who is going to buy it? Will it become the latest shopping car on the streets of Dubai? Possibly, but we can’t see many from Ferrari’s traditional customer base wanting to buy such a car. We will be watching this one with great interest! Finally, we hope you enjoy reading Classic, Performance & Retro magazine as much as we enjoy writing it, but if you would like to see it get even bigger and better, then we need your help! We need to get the word out and that’s where you come in. In this modern day world many people use Facebook, Twitter and post on internet forums and chat rooms. Bentley Breaks Ice Record

The Latest Automotive News From Around The World!

Finland’s four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen drove a Bentley Continental Supersports convertible on the hazardous frozen waters of the Baltic Sea, off the coast of Finland, at a breathtaking 205.48 mph (330.695 km/h) to set a new world speed record on ice.Kankkunen was in irresistible form with his all-wheel drive, 6-litre, 12-cylinder Continental Supersports convertible which, in line with the Company’s CO2 strategy, ran on biofuel. The “world’s fastest soft top” enabled Juha to shatter his own 2007 world ice speed record of 199.83 mph (321.6 km/h) set in the Continental GT at the same location.With the help of his own experienced team and Bentley engineers, Kankkunen overcame the challenges of temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees, sudden snow blizzards and potentially dangerous crosswinds on the 16.5km track on a 70cm-thick layer of sea ice. The record attempt was driven on a 1,000m long measured distance with the speed certified by officials from the Finland Traffic Police. His new world record was based on the average of two runs in opposite directions with measured speeds ratified by a representative of The Guinness Book of Records.“The last time, I narrowly missed the magical 200 mph mark in a Continental GT. about the Supersports I was determined to go record breaking again with the Bentley Boys. This time, with over 600bhp under the bonnet, a Quickshift transmission and the security of the all-wheel drive system, the Supersports convertible was the perfect car to go for the record. ” Kankkunen said.“200mph came up after 5km on sheet ice. Then it was just a question of getting everything right in the timing zone and hoping the snow kept away. There’s nothing to beat driving a Bentley at these speeds; the conditions may be perilous but the car responds so well to the slightest adjustment which gives you the confidence to push even harder.”As with the previous record-breaking drive in the Continental GT the Anglo-Finnish team used a car with minimum modification. A fully-welded, heavy-duty safety roll-cage, along with Pirelli winter tyres (Pirelli SottoZero II 275/40R20) and a rear bumper-mounted parachute provided reassurance in case of an emergency. Front and rear spoilers provided optimum high speed stability on the treacherous surface.Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley’s new Chairman and Chief Executive, said: “The ice speed record is an amazing feat by Juha Kankkunen, whose skill and courage in extreme conditions truly make him one of the modern-day Bentley Boys. We will be celebrating this achievement with a very special ‘extreme’ Bentley, which will be the most powerful model ever to bear the famed Winged B emblem.”A limited edition of just 100 examples of this most extreme Bentley will be made and the car will make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 1st March.

Following the success of the 2010 Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, the event organisers have confirmed that this year’s Pageant will be even bigger and more action-packed, extending to a third day for the first time (Friday 15 to Sunday 17 July 2011). The inclusion of a Friday Preview Day will allow visitors to get behind the scenes in the pit area and view the international field of famous cars, racing drivers and motorcyclists as they take to the 1.2-mile sprint track for practice runs before the competitive race action starts on Saturday. The Cholmondeley Pageant of Power is located in the Cholmondeley Estate in Cheshire, and was created to celebrate power and performance in its many forms. In 2011, the fourth Pageant will feature a range of thrilling displays unmatched in the UK, making it the perfect family day out. A full event schedule and list of participants will be announced over the coming months, but the Cholmondeley Estate has already revealed some enticing details. On display and completing high-speed laps will be legendary vehicles celebrating the 40th anniversary of Tyrrell’s first Formula 1 World Championship, the Lotus that Stirling Moss famously piloted to victory at Monaco in 1961, the world’s only collection of four-wheel drive Formula 1 cars and, from Founding Sponsor Bentley, a Speed 8 endurance racer. The Pageant will not only be a draw for petrolheads and motorsport fans. Four different classes of international powerboat will undertake full-throttle runs on the lake neighbouring the race track. For those that like action of a more explosive nature, there will be a display of British Army combat power, featuring tanks, troops and field artillery all engaged in a breathtaking battle simulation. Taking to the skies will be the largest private helicopter gathering in Europe, facilitated by event sponsor, Eurocopter. Also set for a return in 2011 are the daring Breitling Wingwalkers, and a WWII fighter-plane flypast. The Firework Concert that proved so popular in 2010 – raising over £75,000 for Help for Heroes in the process – will be back on the evening of Saturday 16 July.

Bloodhound SSC Takes ShapeWork has finally started on an ambitious jet-powered car which its makers hope will capture the World Land Speed Record. The Bloodhound SSC is a project headed by Richard Noble, the man behind the Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC programmes which both produced cars which clinched the record.Construction of the Bloodhound’s primary structure started after the project’s Chief Engineer Mark Chapman handed over the first batch of technical drawings to West Midlands based Hampson Aerospace, the company tasked with building the car.The fist job to be tackled was fabrication of the car’s rear chassis. This is one of the major structural parts of the car and it has to be capable of handling the 47,000lbs of thrust from the Eurojet EJ200 jet engine and cope with 30 tonne suspension loadings.220 high-tech engineering companies across the UK are now starting work producing key components for the car while the chassis takes shape. Build will take approximately 12 months to complete prior to runway testing in the UK. The team aims to be on the Hakskeen Pan, Northern Cape in South Africa to begin high speed runs by summer 2012 where the car will be driven by current record holder Andy Green.

BAHRAIN gP CANCELLEd

The Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix, scheduled for March 13, has been cancelled following violent anti-government protests around the country. The decision was taken by the state’s authorities so they can “focus on its process of national dialogue.”Speaking through the official F1 website, Bahrain’s Crown Prince HRH Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa said: “At the present time the country’s entire attention is focused on building a new national dialogue for Bahrain. “Although Bernie Ecclestone had graciously made clear that a decision on the race was entirely Bahrain’s to make and was not yet required, we felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain’s Formula 1 race to a later date. He added: “I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Bernie Ecclestone for his support and understanding.” Ecclestone responded saying: “It is sad that Bahrain has had to withdraw from the race, we wish the whole nation well as they begin to heal their country. The hospitality and warmth of the people of Bahrain is a hallmark of the race there, as anyone who has been at a Bahrain Grand Prix will testify. We look forward to being back in Bahrain soon.”At the time of writing, no firm plans have been made to reschedule the race, which means that the first race of the new season will be the Australian Grand Prix which takes place on March 27.

The biggest surprise at the Motor Racing Legends Awards Dinner at the Royal Automobile Club on Wednesday January 26, was not a winner... but one of the actual trophies. The silverware presented to Alan and Jason Minshaw, for their performance in the new-for-2010 Stirling Moss Trophy series, was itself an incredible piece of motorsport history: none other than the actual trophy awarded to Stirling Moss for his first ever Grand Prix win – the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree, in the W196 Mercedes.As Duncan Wiltshire of Motor Racing Legends explains: “Back in the autumn I mentioned to Stirling and Susie that we needed a trophy to be able to present at the end of the year. Susie disappeared into the cupboard, clattered a few pots and pans, and emerged with this magnificent testament to the silversmith’s art…” Just one of the many awards presented to the various winners of Motor Racing Legends’ three race series (Stirling Moss Trophy, Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy and Pre-War Sports Car Series), the stunning silver trophy caused jaws to drop, when the 200-plus guests were told exactly what it was. And while Alan and Jason Minshaw were unable to be there on the night themselves, as they’re both away racing in South Africa, Jon Minshaw accepted the trophy on their behalf from – of course – none other than Sir Stirling himself.

The F1 season hasn’t even officially started yet and fingers are already being pointed! The latest claims and counter claims came after the new Williams FW33 car set a fastest lap time during recent testing at Jerez, Spain. Rubens Barrichello put in a blistering lap time that was far quicker than any of his 23 rival drivers. One unnamed driver said he ‘didn’t believe’ that the car’s performance was genuine and rumours soon circulated suggesting that the car was running with low fuel, super-soft tyres and was underweight after the KERS unit was removed. Further speculation suggested that this had something to do with the imminent sale of a 27% stake in the outfit on the stock market. A championship contending car would certainly add value to any shares sold.Williams denied the claims, with the team’s Technical Director, Sam Michael, describing the rumours as “Absolute nonsense.” He added that the time was real and that anyone who knows the team should know that they don’t run underweight cars. However, Michael did confirm that the car was on the super soft tyres and running with a light fuel load, but stressed that the KERS unit was indeed fitted.

Over 110 people from all over the world attended the annual Aston Martin Owners’ Club annual prize-giving ceremony in January. Prizes were presented for a wide variety of categories at both club and competition level. Viscountess Downe was on hand to hand over a number of the awards. Among the winners were Jean-Pierre Frottier, who came over from Germany specially to receive the Mike Clayton Trophy and John Stinsmen travelled from the US to receive an Award of Merit. www.amoc.org

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the MG Midget, an endurance event to run from Abingdon to John O Groats via Lands End is being planned by the MG Car Club.The club has released details of the schedule and it sounds like a packed few days for the lucky participants. The event will begin on Monday June 13, with a welcome at the Abingdon HQ, followed by a tour of the original test routes along with photo opportunities for cars at some of the original photo spots. After an early lunch the cars will depart for Lostwithiel where crews will have an evening meal at the Best Western hotel. After an early breakfast on the Tuesday, the cars will depart for Lands End and the start of the LEJOG trial. Lunch will be taken en route before arriving at the Best Western Limpley Stoke Hotel Bath for an overnight stop and evening meal. The following evening the group plans to make a stop at the Best Western Shap Wells Hotel near Penrith. Thursday will see the cars heading to lunch at the Forth Road Bridge before making their way up to Inverness for an overnight stay at Best Western Lochardil House Hotel. Thursday should offer some exciting driving as cars tackle the road from Inverness to the chosen destination of John O Groats. Finishers will receive a commemorative award and after lunch they will retrace their route back to have our final celebratory meal and evening stay at Inverness. The event will raise money for Cancer Research and a web page will be set up for sponsors to subscribe. Entry fee: £20 members £24 non members which includes route books and commemorative award, but excludes hotel charges. All entries must be registered by May 13. Just how do you follow the madness that is the Pagani Zonda? A car so

fast, so powerful and just so completely insane, it caused many motoring journalists to simply implode when

they saw it. Surely Pagani, the Italian manufacturer responsible for unleashing the Zonda, a car which should have carried its own health warning, wouldn’t be able to improve on what seemed

photos dropped onto my desk, the sleek, edgy lines of the car made an instant impact. I started reading the information sheet to myself, until I came to the name. “Huayra….?” I exclaimed out load. “Bless

you,” countered a colleague across the office. I must have spent several minutes trying to figure out how to pronounce the strange name that Pagani had chosen for its new creation. I settled initially on

‘hugh-aey-rah,’ although I also heard it being called ‘hoi-rah,’ ‘how-ee-rah’ and even ‘hoo-rah.’ Apparently the correct pronunciation is ‘huh-wire-ah.’The revelation of a new supercar should have had

me thinking about speed, tyre smoke and that oh-so-sexy engine sound that only cars of this calibre can make. In reality, it actually reminded me of the 1980s film ‘The Man With Two Brains’ starring Steve Martin. In the film, Martin plays the part of Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr, and one of the continuous gags running throughout the movie is watching people struggle to pronounce his surname. “Hfuhrururrrrrrrrrrr!” hisses Martin, as yet another hapless character gets his

name wrong.Like Dr. Hfuhruhurr, Pagani’s new machine has a name, that English speaking people at least, will struggle with, but what does it actually mean? Well, according to the press release…“Ancient legends tell of Aymara Huayra Tata, God of Wind, who controls the breeze, the winds and hurricanes that affect the mountains, ravines and slopes of the Andean cordillera. It is said that Tata Huayra living in the hills and valleys left them

associations, saying the name out load still sounds like the sort of noise that Venus Williams makes when smashing a ball down the centerline at Wimbledon!So what about the car itself? We only have the manufacturer’s data to go on here, but careful examination of the figures indicates that this car could be…well…a bit mad really! To give you an idea; the 6.0-litre AMG V-12 engine produces a whopping 730bhp and 811lb/ft of torque. Now

just think for a second. All that power is wrapped in a body that weighs a mere 1,350kg. That’s the same power to weight ratio as the lightning fast Bugatti Veyron Super Sport! The Huayra is the brainchild of company founder Horatio Pagani, who says he started working on the new car as far back as 2003. So why was he producing a replacement for a car which had only been available for three years when he started? Well, apparently

he was worried that the Zonda would start to look out-dated next to cars like the Ferrari Enzo and Carrera GT. As it turned out, his fears were unfounded, and the Zonda grew from a standard ‘supercar’ to an automotive legend as it left the factory with an increasingly unbelievable spec list. Five years of work went into creating the Huayra’s body alone. It was constantly tweaked, and re-tweaked, until the designer was happy that

perfection had been reached.The all-new monocoque body is constructed from carbon-titanium. Pagani says that it conducted extensive research on the application of advanced composite materials which were first tested on the Zonda R, in order to achieve the highest levels of body rigidity combined with the lightest possible weight.The result is stunning; the fashionable wedge shaped

front end merges beautifully with the ‘bubble type’ cockpit area, which in turn slopes down to an equally fashionable squared-off rear end. The basic design is lifted straight from the ‘How to built a Supercar’ manual, and to be fair you could stick the badge from any Italian supercar manufacturer on it and nobody would be any the wiser, but it is the detailing that makes this car so exquisite.

Take the rear end for example. The main feature here is the cluster of four exhaust tailpipes grouped together high up above the centre of the rear valance. These are flanked on either side by the small circular LED tail lights which add a splash of colour to the mix of dark grey carbon and black steel mesh. It looks industrial, functional, almost German yet unmistakably Italian. It all looks great…until you look

at the door mirrors. Hideous is the only word for these. I can only assume that whoever created these submitted the plans as a joke and someone signed them off without looking at them! I can only describe them as carbon fibre Tulips; very graceful and artistic, but they simply do not belong on a car like this. The detailing on the outside of the car maybe impressive, but it is nothing when compared to the interior. The manufacturer says that every piece used on the car is of the very highest quality. In fact, rumour has it that Mr Pagani stated that each part should be attractive enough to go on display in a case in a museum or gallery! When you look at the interior, you can see that particular goal has easily been reached…and surpassed! Just look at the sculpted gear selector with

its exposed linkages, or the machined aluminium pedals, and the centre-console looks like it was taken straight from Flash Gordon’s space rocket!Even the gauges on the dashboard are bespoke pieces; Pagani could have bought and fitted mass produced, off-the-shelf-items, but instead turned to Swiss watch makers to produce the gauges at a cost of around £2,000 per car.

The gear knob, handbrake handle and steering wheel are works of art in their own right. The dashboard is a riot of alloy, carbon and leather decorated with the red and blue glow from the LED lighting. The overall result is anything but subtle. In fact, one friend of mine described it as looking like “an explosion in a West Midlands curry house!” Now that might be a little on the harsh side, but maybe he has

point. Some people will think that this interior is absolutely horrible; others will love it. As always, it comes down to personal taste (or lack of it!), and let’s face it, you don’t buy a Pagani built car if you want to blend in with the crowd. No, the Huayra is a statement, and it screams ‘look at me’ louder than just about any other car in its class. The suspension is largely similar to that which was used on the last version of the Zonda R, although the geometry is different. The wishbones are made from a copper-rich aluminium alloy

called Avional which is made in Switzerland. These are mated to fully adjustable Ohlins dampers, which along with the specially developed Pirelli tyres, make a major contribution to the car’s handling. However, the sculpted bodywork does a fair amount of the work too, by clever use of aerodynamics to keep the car pressed against the road.For example, the engine radiators at the front of the car are inclined, and the air that flows through them vents ahead of the windscreen so it doesn’t cause lift. Either

side of these are the rads for the intercoolers. Air is vented through these radiators and directed at the Brembo carbon brakes. This provides ‘air conditioning’ for the brakes, since the rads will cool the air on a hot day, or warm it on a cold day. As with any race set-up, carbon brakes don’t function well when cold, so pumping warm air over them is a neat idea.The radiator fit is just one part of the aerodynamic package. Another is the set of four computer-controlled flaps that allow the down-force on each corner of the car to be

controlled independently. As far as performance goes, a lot of the figures are still unofficial as the car is still in development. What we do know is that it should have a top speed of over 230mph and a 0-62 time of around 3.0 seconds which suggests it will be slightly quicker than the Ferrari 458 yet not as fast as the Bugatti Veyron. Like the Zonda, the Huayra will undoubtedly gain a ‘cult’ following and will almost certainly cause a few sleepless nights for the development teams at rival manufacturers. Watch this space!

The Morris Minor has a huge following and there are some beautiful cars out there, but how do you avoid buying a disaster on wheels? Simon Hazeldine speaks to Minor expert Ian Allen and finds out that really good Minors have great legs and a nice bottom!

When it comes to car designers, few can claim to have created as many iconic vehicles as Alec

Issigonis. He was perhaps most famous for designing the Austin Mini, a car that won the affection of the entire British nation, but there was another design of his which almost equalled the Mini is sales and popularity – the Morris Minor.Towards the end of World War two, Issigonis was working for Morris on plans for an all-new family car. It was based on a monocoque shell and featured a brand new flat-four engine which powered the front wheels, coil spring and wishbone suspension and rack and pinion steering.

The ambitious project was called the ‘Mosquito’ and had it seen the light of day in its intended form it would have been hailed as a car ahead of its time.Sadly, the innovative car failed to impress Morris’ head, Lord Nuffield, who famously described the car as looking like a ‘poached egg.’ Undeterred, Issigonis and his team pressed ahead, gradually making changes to the design to try and placate the obstructive management. Out went the flat four engine,

replaced by a straight four 918cc side valve engine. The front wheel drive set up was also dropped in favour of the more traditional rear wheel drive and by 1947 the car was ready for production.Still the management stalled on the project, and it was a year later in 1948 that the car was finally unveiled at the Earl’s Court Motor Show in London. By then, Lord Nuffield had insisted that its name be changed from Mosquito to Minor, the name previously given to the pre-war open

tourer of 1928-1934.Issigonis himself also made one last, and some would say fairly major, change just before the launch. He had one of the prototype mock-ups cut in half down the centre of the car from front to rear. He then had his engineer Reg Jobs move the two halves apart until the designer was happy with its aesthetic appearance. He then instructed he team to “make it so.”As a result, the Minor was now four inches wider than the planned car and you can see

evidence of this on any Morris Minor. Have a look at the bonnet on any Minor and you will see a four inch wide strip running down the centre. The car was an immediate hit with the press and public, and the rest as they say, is history.Owning a Morris Minor can be a very rewarding experience and it can be a brilliant introduction to classic motoring. However, buying the ‘right’ car can make the difference between years of trouble free pleasure or a succession of problems and expensive repair bills.One man who knows just about everything there is to know about Morris Minors is Ian Allen, owner of Cambridgeshire based Minor Services. Ian has been fixing and restoring Minors since the 1980s and owners from all over the UK and the rest of Europe

running restoration project or cars at the lower end of the price range. Unlike the Mini Travellers where the wooden frame is purely decorative, on the Morris the woodwork is part of the car’s structure.

UnderbodyAt least any problems with the woodwork should be fairly easy to spot by any potential buyer, but unfortunately most of the Minor’s ‘gotchas’ are hidden from view underneath the car. I asked Ian to explain what buyers should look for and what are the most common problems.“Starting underneath at the front of the car, the front chassis legs, or chassis rails as some people call them, have a reinforcing web where the eye bolts are fitted. The metal is double thickness in that area and moisture tends

to get in between the layers and cause corrosion. There are drain holes but they are often blocked, so the front chassis legs can rot out. It’s a critical point and if they are in poor condition they will need replacing. You can get repair sections which are fine if they are fitted properly”I guess this is a fairly common

problem on a lot of cars. The front chassis is exposed to road dirt and water, and being underneath the car they rarely get any sort of preventative care, so rule 1 when buying a Minor is make sure it has nice legs!Moving further back, Ian highlighted another problem under the car. “The centre

cross-member can also suffer from corrosion which can cause major problems. It runs right across the middle of the car and the torsion bar suspension mounts on to it, so all the weight of the car comes back onto those mounting points. Like the chassis legs, they collect moisture and dirt and can rot horribly. In extreme cases they can even break and go up through the floor of the car. Again, you can

buy repair sections and weld them in once the rot has been cut out, but I prefer to replace the whole thing as it makes for a stronger repair.”

said that they often become blocked. If they do, then trapped water can cause the sills to rot from the inside out. The solution? “Make sure the drain holes are clear,” says Ian, “and like any box section on a classic car, make sure it is filled with a wax rust prevention product to stop the corrosion.”If you can, remove the sloping kick plate on the top of each sill. These are held in place with a few screws, but can hide a lot of problems.Moving towards the rear of the car, Ian highlights the rear spring hangers as another point to look at. They can rot out or the surrounding metalwork can corrode which weakens the area and could lead to failure in extreme cases. Repair sections can be welded in but it must be done properly as a poor job could

Check The SillsAnother area that seems to be a common problem on many classics is the sills, and the Minor is no exception. Ian pointed out a number of tiny drain holes in the bottom of each sill assembly and

affect the geometry of the car.Another classic rust point is the boot floor corners. This is a problem on both the Travellers and the Saloon cars and will require surgery with an angle grinder and welder. “The best way to detect any of these problems,” says Ian, “is to tap them gently with a small hammer. If it makes a nice metallic sound when you tap it, and it sounds like you are hitting solid metal, then it should be okay. If it makes a dull thudding noise and you can see flakes of rust falling away, then things are not as they should be.” The good news is that all of these problems can be fixed, and if you are confident at cutting and welding, then there are readily available repair sections for all these areas.The nightmare starts when you buy a Minor that has nice shiny paintwork on top, but has been neglected underneath. Ian told me several stories about owners of just such cars; some who had paid top prices only to find later that the car was rotting away underneath and then had to spend thousands more on repairs. “For me, the value of the car is entirely in the under-body area,” added Ian. I often get customers asking me to repaint their cars, and the first thing I do is look underneath. If it’s rotten, I refuse to paint them. If the car isn’t going to last another five or six years, then the customer would just be wasting their money.”

I asked Ian about any mechanical issues. He told me that a lot of owners are unhappy if their car is leaking oil. Not surprising really as it makes a horrible mess on the driveway, but I was surprised to learn that Minors were actually designed to leak!“There is a split-pin fitted in a hole in the bottom of the gearbox bell-housing. Many owners don’t know why it is there, but they were fitted at the factory for a very good reason. Morris knew that oil was going to leak from the

rear main engine bearing and seep into the bell-housing. The hole in the bottom of the housing allows the oil to drain out, because the last thing you want is for it to fill up with oil. The split pin is in the hole to stop it from clogging up. It moves around with the vibrations from the car which keeps the hole clear”So is it possible to stop the oil from leaking out of the engine in the first place? “It is, but it’s very expensive. Topping the oil up occasionally is much cheaper. To cure the

leak means taking the engine out, having it line-bored and fitting a new crank, so you are talking about at least £1,500. My advice to most people would be don’t bother. They leaked oil from the day they left the factory”

that Ian says needs close inspection is the front suspension trunnions. These should be greased at regular intervals but are often neglected on many cars. Lack of grease can cause metal-to-metal friction, increased wear and even failure of the trunnion which means the wheel assembly can collapse.

Needless to say, if you are driving when that happens, the results can be disastrous. It is difficult to check for, especially during a pre-purchase inspection. To do this, the car has to be jacked up, and then a second jack needs to be placed under the wishbone to take the weight of the suspension unit. With the car in this configuration you can check for play in the trunnions. If there is any, replacement is the best option. To have the work done professionally will cost around £250.00 per side, so it pays to keep them well greased.

Upper BodyMoving around to the upper body, there are still plenty of rust traps for the unwary buyer to be aware of. One such nasty is the lower portion of the flitch panel just in front of

the door A-Post. Part of it is hidden by an inner section of the front wing, and it’s a great place to trap mud and other debris. This builds up over the years and holds water like a sponge and before long, holes will appear in the flitch panel. Careful cleaning along with copious amounts of wax-based rust inhibitor are the only ways to prevent this from happening. Door bottoms are also susceptible to rot, again due to blocked drain holes, and while the repair panels might be inexpensive at around £25.00 each, the paintwork required to finish the job properly won’t be cheap. Remember, if you are paying to have the work done, a solid second-hand door might be a cheaper option than cutting, welding, filling and spraying. Bootlids tend to rust along the lower edge where moisture

gets trapped between the inner frame and outer skin and even the bottom edge of the boot aperture itself is prone to rusting.The good news is that just about every body panel is available for the Morris Minor, especially the later ones. They are very inexpensive too, and even if you don’t need a full panel, there are repair sections for all the most common problem areas. Body parts for the very earliest ‘low light’ and ‘split screen’ cars are harder to find, so occasionally fabrication will be required, or sometimes parts from later cars can be modified to fit.

This is the same engine that was fitted to the Morris Eight Series E (and the Wolseley Eight featured elsewhere in this issue) and although it is quite reliable, spares are becoming difficult to source.Next came the first of the BMC A-Series engines that the Minor would retain until the end of its production. The first one was a tiny 803cc version. Owners of these cars have joked that they would go faster is they harnessed a horse to the car!That was followed by the 948cc unit, the same as fitted to early MG Midgets and Austin Healey Sprites. These engines were extremely reliable and could easily clock up over 150,000 miles before requiring any serious work. They are also regarded by many as the nicest running

engine of the A-Series units used in the Minor.As far as a potential buyer is concerned, there are plenty of signs to look for when the unit does start to wear out. First of these will be exhaust smoke under power, noisy tappets and reduced performance. You might also hear big-end knocking when the engine is started, timing chain rattle and the oil light maybe slow to go out due to reduced oil pressure. Exercise caution if the car has been warmed up prior to you arriving for the pre-sale inspection – it is an old trick to disguise the big end knocking.After the 948cc engine came the 1098cc powerplant which provide a little more power and cars fitted with these engines are popular for their ability to just about keep up with modern traffic. A common

modification is the fitting of a 1275cc A-Series engine. These were never fitted as standard, but were used in cars like the MG Midget and Mini Cooper. They drop straight in without the need for major reworking of the engine bay and the gearboxes fitted to the 1098 cars seem to cope reasonably well with the extra power.

aftermarket kits available which allow you to convert the drums to discs and you can even fit a brake servo for extra stopping power. Making these changes will make the car more usable in modern traffic and perhaps a little safer too, but don’t blame us if you are targeted by the ‘originality police!’Overall the Morris Minor is a great car to own and benefits from a wide network of spare parts suppliers and excellent support from the Morris Minor Owner’s Club. Membership of the latter is highly recommended as experienced members are often available to answer any questions you

might have about the cars via the club’s excellent website.Just remember Ian’s words and you shouldn’t go too wrong: “All of the car’s value is in the under-body.”

Achilles HeelTalking of gearboxes, these are sometimes regarded as the ‘Achilles heel’ of the Minor series as they tend to be rather weak by modern standards. None of the variants had syncromesh on first gear, and where it is fitted on other gears, it seems to give up rather easily. Look out for noisy gearboxes and problems with the car jumping out of gear, especially in second.Gearbox parts supply is variable, with later cars having the best spares availability. Parts for the early gearboxes are getting increasingly hard to find. One option around this problem is to fit a five-speed gearbox conversion kit, which uses the box from a Ford Sierra to replace the standard unit. Expect to pay around £4-500.00 for the kit.

BrakingOne problem with fitting bigger engines and gearboxes is that it will allow the car to go considerably faster than the manufacturer intended. “Great!” you might be thinking, but don’t forget that the brakes on the Minor were barely adequate in the first place. Thankfully, there are several

Professional aviation photographer Keith Wilson likes to spend his spare time tending to a very special 1946 Wolseley Eight, sometimes referred to as an ‘upmarket Morris Eight’ Simon Hazeldine takes a closer look at this rare classic.

As World War Two rumbled to its dramatic conclusion in 1945, the

last thing the population of Great Britain had on its mind was the state of its car industry. After all, they had far more pressing things to deal with, like rebuilding the bombed

out cities and repairing the fractured supply lines that would ensure a steady supply of food could reach the shops and finally end rationing.Automotive development had stagnated during the war years. There was no market for new cars as most of the

car owners and drivers in the 1940s were men…and they were overseas fighting for their country. Even if potential buyers had been there, they wouldn’t have found any cars because most of the factories had been taken over and were producing munitions, tanks

and even aircraft. If there was an available factory, it wouldn’t have been any good as all the steel was being used for military purposes. No customers, no factories and no raw materials; it’s a miracle that any car manufacturers survived the war, but survive they did. One of those was Wolseley.The story of Wolseley – one of Britain’s earliest car

manufacturers – is a long and interesting one, and probably worthy of its own feature, but let’s take a look at a slightly condensed version. The Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company was formed in 1901 as an offshoot of the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company. The first Wolseley cars emerged later that same year and were built at the manufacturer’s Adderley

Park factory in Birmingham. By 1914 the factory had grown in size from 3½ acres to 21 acres and between the wars, Wolseley had grown to become Britain’s largest motor manufacturer, turning out some 3,000 cars each year. The Adderley Park factory even became the largest motor vehicle production plant in Europe at one point, and it seemed that a great future

lay ahead for the British car builder.However, things started going wrong for the company in the mid-1920s, when inefficient working practises led to Wolseley making a loss for the first time in its history. Downturn turned to

disaster when it eventually went bankrupt in 1927 and the remains of the company, including both its factories, were bought by none other than William Morris, the man behind Morris Commercial Cars Ltd.Under its new Morris

parentage, Wolseley continued to produce a number of cars of its own design, such as the Viper, and Wasp. In 1935 Wolseley became a subsidiary of Morris Motors Ltd and by the end of the decade, Wolseley was producing cars which were basically re-badged Morris cars with a few other tweaks and refinements.One of those cars was the Wolseley Eight, which was in fact a ‘Wolseley version’ of the hugely successful Morris Eight Series E, and it is one of these that is the subject of this feature. The prototype Wolseley Eight was built just before the outbreak of World War Two, and had been scheduled for a 1940 launch, but thanks to the impending hostilities, it didn’t actually start rolling off the

production line until late 1945, after the war had ended. While the Wolseley shared many of the same components with its Morris stable mate, there were one or two major differences. The most obvious one was the redesigned front end which incorporated a stylish radiator grille, complete with the traditional illuminated Wolseley badge. The bonnet hinged upwards, and while access to the engine and ancillaries was adequate, it wasn’t as good as the earlier Morris cars.Round at the back end of the car the boot lid was hinged from the bottom while the Morris car had a top-hinged lid. Before the outbreak of the war, Wolseley had a reputation for producing cars with lavish interiors, and while the Eight’s was better than most, it was

toned down considerably in keeping with the austere expectations of the immediate post-war population. After all, it would seem rather vulgar to cavort around in a luxury vehicle while half the country struggled to put food on the table! That didn’t mean that

the interior was completely Spartan; the Eight benefited from pile carpet, leather upholstery and polished wood trim. Back to the present day, and I find myself looking at a very pretty green and black Wolseley Eight basking in

the weak, but surprisingly warm winter sunshine. It looks stunning as the sunlight sparkles in its highly polished chrome and paintwork. Its owner, Keith Wilson, carefully wipes away some of the dust that has settled on the bodywork during its winter

hibernation.‘Winston’ – as this particular car is known – is a 1946 Wolseley Eight and is one of only 22 examples known to survive out of the 5,344 produced. Its history can be traced back to its first owner, a farmer in Norfolk, who bought

the car when new and used it as his daily transport. He ran it for a number of years and clocked up around 60,000 miles until it eventually broke down. Rather than scrap it or repair it, he simply pushed it into the back of a barn and purchased another car. The Wolseley gradually faded from memory and in typical ‘farmer fashion’ the car ended up with more and more clutter and farm equipment stacked around it until it all but disappeared from view.The years went by, and then in the early 1990s the farmer sadly passed away. His children inherited the farm and set about clearing out the barn and other out-buildings. Much to their surprise, there at the back of the barn sat the long

forgotten Wolseley. The family eventually decided to sell the car and it was purchased by a local man who set about having it restored by a Norfolk-based specialist.It seemed that fate was conspiring against the little car to prevent it from ever running again, as part way through the rebuild the new owner ran out of funds and had to put it up for sale. It was around this time that Keith, its current owner, was told by his wife Carol that she would actually quite like a classic car to run around in, and not being one to miss out on such an excellent opportunity, he started looking for a suitable car. After a little searching, he eventually came across the Wolseley. When he

first saw the car the restoration was almost complete and it just needed finishing off. After some careful consideration, he decided he simply had to have it, and once Keith had agreed a price with the restorers, the car was his. Within a few months, the car was finished

and Keith took it back to his home as a present for his wife to celebrate the birth of their first son, Sam. As I mentioned earlier, the car looks wonderful, but surely it must be difficult picking up spares for a vehicle of this age?

The Wolseley Eight was sometime scalled an ‘upper class Morris Eight’ thanks to its polished wood dashboard and leather trim. Although the interior was basic compared to some, it did have an air of luxary not seen in many post-war cars.In reality, the Morris Eight interior didn’t look that much different from the Wolseley’s. The trim was almost identical, and while some of the dashboards did have wooden trim, the gauges usually had plain black faces. These days, many restorers fit leather seat covers and luxary carpets to the Morris cars, so now there is little difference between the two models.

In 1918, Wolseley began a joint venture in Tokyo, with Ishikawajiama Ship Building and Engineering. The first Japanese-built Wolseley car rolled off the line in 1922. In 1949, the company renamed itself ‘Isuzu Motors’ and they are still producing cars today.

“The main problem with operating the Wolseley is that it has a six volt electrical system,” said Keith. “For the first three or four years I used to go off to motorcycle shows and hunt down 6V light bulbs and other electrical items. The batteries were not so much of a problem, because cars like the early MGBs have 6V systems, so they tend to be readily available.”I asked Keith what the spares situation was like on the rest of the car; items such as body panels for example. “Thankfully I haven’t needed any panels since the car was restored so that hasn’t been a problem. Quite a few of the Morris Eight parts fit the Wolseley, but there are lots more that don’t. As for other

parts, the internet has made finding them so much easier because now I just type a part number into a search engine and I get a list of the places I can buy it from, which is just

fantastic. Perhaps surprisingly, some of the hardest parts to find are items for the ignition system. The spark plugs are quite special; the rotor arm and all the parts inside the

distributor cap can be a pain to find. You can get away with running different condensers though; I currently have a 12V one fitted which gives a slightly fatter spark than the original 6V part”.One area of contention for Keith is petrol, or rather the

quality of it. He has noticed that the performance of the car has deteriorated slightly over the last three or four years and that is something he puts down to the ever decreasing quality of unleaded fuel.“I use the unleaded petrol with a fuel additive to prevent

valve seat recession, but it still isn’t anywhere near as good as leaded petrol. The compressions are definitely down, and it’s getting to the stage where I have to consider taking the head off and fitting hardened valve seats. I’m reluctant to do that because the car is exceptionally original; the engine is still as it was when it left the factory and no major work has ever been done on it and I kind of like that originality.”I like Keith’s sentimental attitude and it is certainly reflected in the car’s overall appearance. It looks and feels very original, just the way a car like this should be.As far as maintaining the car, Keith is happy to let a local garage deal with most of the complicated or time consuming jobs. He would

love to do all the work himself, but he makes his living as a photographer shooting air-to-air photographs of aeroplanes and often travels internationally on assignments. Some of the jobs can also be rather demanding as he explained. “It’s a very difficult car to work on without a pit or a ramp and it’s not easy to jack up. Luckily, there is a garage in the local town that is used to dealing with classic cars so if there are any major jobs that need doing, I take the car to them. To give you an example, one such job was when the exhaust manifold was leaking at the point where it joined onto the main system. It would be a simple job on most other cars, but on the Wolseley it is a real pain! The bolts that hold it together can only

be accessed from under the car and it would have meant jacking the car up, placing it on axle stands and crawling underneath to try and do the work which would probably take a whole afternoon. At the garage they just put it on the ramp and it becomes a ten minute job. The guys there

actually enjoy working on the older cars and are usually happy to it for ‘beer rates,’ so it saves me a lot of hassle and doesn’t cost too much either.” When Keith does work on the car, he is ably assisted by his 14-year-old son Oliver. “He loves working on the car and he has almost adopted it as

his own! He has driven it on private land and he has a great mechanical aptitude so he is quite happy working with spanners and hammers.”Keith describes the Wolseley’s driving characteristics as “interesting” while also being a lot of fun to drive. “I wouldn’t like to repeat some of the expletives we have used when

we have driven it flat out! Its acceleration is pedestrian and the clutch is quite hard which can make your legs ache after a ‘longish’ drive. It will cruise quite happily at around 50mph, but if you go above that speed up to about 55mph, it lets you know about it! Its lateral stability at higher speeds, especially on its cross

ply tyres, leaves a little bit to be desired. At those speeds, any sort of crosswind will get your attention very quickly, so generally I tend to run it at about 45-50mph. The brakes are pretty much what you would expect from a car of its age. The all-round drum set up is adequate, but nothing more. You press the pedal and wait for something to happen, but you aren’t really going that fast so if you drive accordingly, it’s not a problem. The gearbox syncro-mesh is not brilliant; going from fourth to third is fine, but third to second requires a certain amount of double-declutching. Reverse can be hard to find but otherwise works well.”One unusual feature on the Wolseley is what Keith jokingly calls its ‘air conditioning’ system. He is of course

referring to the hinged windscreen which can be cranked open with a small handle mounted in the centre of the dashboard. “It’s a great feature on hot summer days,” says Keith, “and it always attracts a lot of interest whenever we take the car to shows.” Talking of shows, Keith and Oliver try and take the car to at least a couple of shows during the summer months, but when I quiz him about future plans for the car, Keith has one or two great ideas. “I’d love to see the Wolseley used in a film of TV programme. There are a number of period dramas that it would be ideal for, even if it was just used as a stationary prop, it would be great to see how it looks on a realistic 1940s film set.” So Mr Spielberg, if you happen to be

reading this…One final question for Keith; why is the car called Winston? “Simple. It begins with W and the name Winston was quite a topical one back in 1946, thanks to a certain Mr Churchill, so Winston the Wolseley it was!”Overall, the Wolseley Eight is a captivating little car. It looks

fantastic, as did the Morris Eight, but the Wolseley has a bit more exclusivity to it thanks to its rarity. Is it fair to describe it as an upmarket Morris Eight? Maybe, but one thing’s for sure, Winston the Wolseley will be a treasured part of the Wilson family for a long time to come…especially if Oliver has anything to do with it!

Everybody knows that if you want a car with space for a set of golf

clubs and room for a couple of kids in the back, you don’t buy a Ferrari. Apart from the odd exception, cars emerging from the Maranello factory are almost exclusively two seaters. The word ‘practicality’ is completely absent from Ferrari’s business plan. Until now that is.The Italian manufacturer has just released the first official images of the all-new Ferrari FF; a four-seater, four-wheel-drive, shooting-brake style car. If ever Ferrari were going to produce a ‘Marmite car,’ this is it. You’ll either love it or hate it.It has certainly caused a huge

amount of debate already in the dark, seedy world of the automotive journalist. Lets face it, if Ford or Vauxhall had produced this car, motoring hacks would be wetting themselves with delight, but Ferrari…no.So what do we know about the FF? Well, according to the manufacturer the car is the company’s most powerful, versatile four-seater ever, as well as its first ever four-wheel drive car. It says that the FF - an acronym for Ferrari Four (four seats and four-wheel drive) - ushers in an entirely new GT sports car concept, adding that it represents a “decisive break with the past, the new car represents not so much an evolution as a true

revolution.” Okay, but who is going to buy it? It is unlikely to appeal to the traditional Ferrari customer base that craves two seater, ultra-sleek sportscars, and while it might have four-wheel drive, it wont end up replacing all the ‘Chelsea tractors’ currently cluttering up the streets of West London, so it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly who Ferrari think will buy the FF.Delving into the blurb that accompanied the first pictures gives very little hint as to what the market could be.Ferrari says that the new V12 melds to an unprecedented level an extremely sporty, high-performance character with incredible

versatility, superb comfort and sophisticated elegance, guaranteeing both driver and passengers an absolutely unique driving experience. The car was designed by Pininfarina, and Ferrari says that the shape and proportions perfectly interpret the FF’s harmonious blend of sporting DNA and extraordinary usability. The FF features the company’s first ever four-wheel drive system. Ferrari’s exclusive, patented 4RM (four-wheel drive) apparently weighs 50% less than a conventional four-wheel drive system, which

helps the car maintain its weight distribution (53% over the rear axle). The manufacturer says that the four wheel drive system is completely integrated with the car’s electronic dynamic control systems, which allows it to deliver record levels of performance on all terrains and in all conditions via continuous and intelligent predictive torque distribution to all four wheels. The FF is also equipped with the latest magnetorheological damping system (SCM3), as well as the most recent development in carbon-ceramic brakes from

Brembo. Power comes from the new 6,262 cc direct injection engine which develops 660 CV at 8,000 rpm. In tandem with its transaxle dual-clutch F1 gearbox, the car should return acceleration figures of 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. The new model’s class-leading weight-to-power ratio of 2.7 kg/CV, along with its ideal weight distribution, is designed to ensure exceptionally responsive handling. The result is that owners will be able to enjoy the FF’s prowess over a wide range of uses: city driving, on low grip or snow-

covered surfaces and on the track. Ferrari says that its latest model also offers standards of passenger space, comfort, in-car spec and equipment previously unheard of in such a high-performance car. It can comfortably accommodate four people and their luggage, thanks to the best cabin space and boot capacity (450 litres extendable to 800) figures in its category. A vast array of personalisation options and accessories has also been developed for the FF. These include six model-specific exterior colours and interior trim incorporating specially selected and treated aniline leather. The FF is set to make its debut appearance at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland on March 3-13.It will be interesting to see how it sells...and who buys it!

Keeping Automotive History Aliveautodrome

The Stondon Transport Museum

While sticking virtual pins in the (Google) map in a seemingly

hopeless attempt to determine which museum I would visit this month for Autodrome, I came across the website for the Stondon Transport Museum in Bedfordshire. Now this was a new one to me, but since it claims to have the largest privately owned 70 CPR Magazine

collections of car in the UK, it certainly warranted a closer look.I was already sort of aware of its existence as it is located close to RAF Henlow and when I flew into the base with a friend a couple of years ago, I couldn’t help notice the museum, thanks mainly to the giant landmark by the main entrance, but more about that

later. However, although I was aware that it existed, I didn’t know much more about it than that.The museum itself is easy enough to find as it is only a ten-minute drive from the A1. Just come off at junction 8 or junction 10 and follow the brown signs. If you get lost, just follow the red signs to RAF Henlow and then take

the road for Stondon. The entrance is basically a gap in a large hedge, easy to miss if you are not looking out for it.The site was a garden centre in a previous life and the gravel car park is typical of the kind you find at such places – plenty of space, but if it’s wet, lots of puddles too! A wooden archway bearing the word ‘Entrance’ in faded lettering guides visitors to the rather uninspiring front door. Passing through this, the first thing you encounter is a

reception area that doubles up as the museum shop and cafeteria. This area was undergoing some renovation work when I visited, but the welcome was friendly and the staff members were happy to chat about the museum.Now before I go any further, I need to clarify a few things. There is no polite way of putting this, but it has to be said. The museum buildings have seen better days...much better days. This isn’t one of those state funded museums

which are lavishly decked out with polished wood, chrome and glass. No, this is an old garden centre where the greenhouses now host cars instead of plants. I’m sure it looked great back in the 1980s, but it all looks a bit jaded now. That might sound a bit depressing, but all you have to do is look at it from a different angle. Lower your expectations a little, and what you find here is something of a motoring treasure trove.We have all heard stories of those mythical barns in the middle of nowhere, stacked full of forgotten cars from days gone by. Most of us would happily pay a small fee to look around just such a place and that is pretty much what the Stondon Transport Museum is like. Once you have purchased your ticket, you are directed down a narrow corridor which leads into Hall 1. The first car on show is a 1932 BSA three wheeler. These were produced from 1929 until 1936 and are extremely rare now. Like most of the vehicles in the museum

it is in good original condition. Many of the cars look like they have been driven in, parked up and left. One or two seem to have been restored at some point, but most appear to be

wearing their factory paint.Further on in Hall 1 are a 1935 Morris 8 Series 1, a 1930 Rover 10, a 1934 Morris 10/4 and two Model T Fords. These are all very collectable

cars and like the BSA are in good original condition. They are not perfect by any means; some display signs of surface corrosion and faded chrome-work, but it’s nothing that a really good cut and polish wouldn’t sort out.Now to give you an idea if the diversity of cars on display, Hall 1 also houses a 1992 Vauxhall Cavalier, a 1983 Vauxhall Astra and three Rolls-Royces from the 1970s.It’s a bizarre mix of cars for sure; I stood scratching my head wondering what the Cavalier was doing in a car museum and then it suddenly dawned on me. How many other 1990s Cavaliers are being preserved for future generations? Very few I would imagine and I can’t remember

the last time I saw on the road. What I was looking at was a car that could become a very rare (and valuable!) future classic! Moving from Hall 1 to Hall 2, it soon became apparent that there were quite a few ‘future classics’ on display, though none quite as modern as the Cavalier. Among the cars to catch my eye were a De Tomaso Deauville, a very presentable 1982 Porsche 911 Carrera, a 1966 Jensen CV8 and an absolutely massive 1958 Ford Fairlane Skyliner Retractable.One area where this museum really scores well is the way visitor can relate to the exhibits. For example, I overheard several visitors pointing out types of car that

they had owned or driven in the past. I too could relate to some of the cars on display; the Mk1 Ford Fiesta, the Triumph Spitfire and Ford Capri were the first three cars I ever owned…and here were

similar examples on show in a museum. If only I had known at the time that I was driving museum pieces I would have taken more care of them!One thing I must say is that the lighting in most of the

halls is excellent. Perhaps that isn’t too surprising as the buildings are converted greenhouses and they still have a lot of glass in the roofs, but it made a pleasant change from some of the dark, gloomy museums I have visited in the past. On the downside, the roof was leaking in numerous places with water dripping and splashing onto the exhibits. One of the cars even had a strategically placed bowl located on its boot lid to catch the falling water. I mentioned this problem to one of the staff members and was assured that this problem was going to be addressed in the summer, so hopefully next winter things will be a little drier inside. Still, maybe the water was hinting at what was to come. After all, where’s there’s water…there’s boats, and

the Stondon museum has a big one! If you recall earlier I mentioned a giant landmark that made the museum stand out from the air. Well the item in question is a full-scale replica of Captain Cook’s HM Bark Endeavour.The replica was built at the site from copies of the original plans and even if you are not into boats, you would still have to admit it’s impressive! The Endeavour is open to the public, but only when accompanied by a museum tour guide. Tours of the ship are given daily at 12.00 and 15.00 and visitors can get a taste of what life must have been like for the ancient mariners that served on these ships.Heading back into the car museum, the pathway from the Endeavour leads into Hall 6 where most of the museum’s larger exhibits are displayed. The first thing you see as you walk through the door is

a massive Russian ZIL-137 military truck carrying a rather menacing looking SAM 3 missile! I guess it’s one way of keeping your neighbours

under control. Also in Hall 6 is a collection of fire engines, including an American built Mack that previously served with the New Jersey Fire

Department. Nearby is a small collection of military vehicles including a small tank. Aviation enthusiasts will also find something of interest at Stondon as hanging from the ceiling in Hall 7 are a few aircraft, including a replica of Mignet HM.14 Pou-du-Ciel and a Penn-Smith Gyroplane.

There is an impressive collection of vintage motorcycles and next to it sits a Skoda Rapid convertible…hmmm.Last but not least is Hall 8. The first thing you see as you enter this hall is a large Romany gypsy caravan, complete with all its

furnishings. Scattered around this is what appears to be the contents from several house clearances, including cuddly toys and other assorted bric-a-brac. Sat in one corner is a replica of Stephenson’s Rocket, the famous steam locomotive built in 1829. The original is currently preserved at the Science Museum in London, although it looks very different to the Stondon replica which represents the Rocket in its famous yellow and black paint scheme. Overall the Stondon Transport Museum is an interesting experience. It lacks the class and prestige of some of the UK’s better funded museums, and some of the buildings are in a poor state of repair, but some of the exhibits are well worth seeing. As I mentioned previously, this museum scores high with the ‘I had one

of those’ factor and the variety of exhibits means there should be something of interest to most people. I certainly intend to go back again later this year after the planned work has been carried out on the halls, so watch out for an update in a future issue of Classic, Performance & Retro.

Coys - Autosport International ShowNEC, Birmingham, UK.January 15, 2011.

Barons held another successful auction at Sandown Park, Surrey, on February 8. According to the auctioneer, the number of entries was down slightly on the previous year but the quality of the lots was well up to standard with around 80% of them finding new homes. The star of the show was a beautiful 1933 MG J2 Midget, which came with five decades of history, and sold for a deserved £24,300. Another car attracting a lot of interest was an AK427 Cobra Replica, which had covered just 950 miles from new and was sold for £35000. A beautiful Rolls-Royce MPW two-door Coupe, which failed to sell in December, was re-presented correctly with reams of build history, looking like a different car and made £14,651. Just goes to show that presentation and attention to detail can make all the difference!

1933 MG J2 Midget ‘Star of Show’ At Sandown Park

A 1968 Bizzarrini 5300GT was the star performer at the annual Coys auction during the recent Autosport International Racing Car Show at Birmingham’s NEC. The rare Italian exotic was the subject of a fierce telephone bidding war which was finally settled when the auctioneer accepted a final bid of £215,000, amounting to £238,000 including premium, £58,000 more than the guide price.Other notable sales at the event included a right-hand drive Ferrari 365GTB/4 from 1971 which sold for £151,000 including premium and a 1994 left-hand drive Jaguar XJ220 with less than 4,000km on the clock for £130,750 with premium.
