NOTES ON PROGRAMWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) — This divertimento was originally written for three basset horns in B-flat, likely composed in 1783, and later published for string trio and even piano. Part of a set of three trios with varying details such as order, keys, movement order, and repeat placement, this version was published in 1804.

William Grant Still (1895–1978) was an American composer, conductor, and the first African American to conduct a professional symphony orchestra in the United States. Though a prolific composer of operas, ballets, symphonies, and other works, he was best known for his Afro-American Symphony (1931). Miniatures is a musical composition in five movements, composed for trio in 1948 and arranged for quintet in 1963. It is based on folk music from the United States, Mexico, and Peru.

Graham Cohen (b. 1999) recently earned a bachelor’s degree in viola performance from The Julliard School and will continue his music studies there in the master’s program. Cohen has won the Morton Gould Award for Young Composers multiple times and was the Charlotte Bergen Award scholarship recipient in 2009. MusicaNova has premiered several of Cohen’s orchestral compositions, and he is often a soloist or performer in the MNO viola section.

Eric Ewazen (b. 1954) studied composition under Samuel Adler, Milton Babbitt, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Schwantner, Warren Benson, and Eugene Kurtz at the Eastman School of Music and The Juilliard School (where he received numerous composition awards, prizes, and fellowships). He has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School since 1980 and is a lecturer for the New York Philharmonic’s Musical Encounters Series. He has also served on the faculties of the Hebrew Arts School and the Lincoln Center Institute. He served as vice president of the League of Composers-International Society for Contemporary Music from 1982 to 1989 and was also composer-in-residence for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Roaring Fork was commissioned by the Borealis Wind Quintet and premiered in the 1993–94 season. The first movement depicts the lush, rich sounds of Maroon Creek’s flowing rapids; the second is alternately gentle and expansive, evoking the serenity of Snowmass Lake, a glacial lake ringed by peaks of 13,000 feet and surrounded by delicate and fragile white columbine flowers. The final movement portrays the sense of exhilaration, excitement, and quiet amazement experienced at the top of Buckskin Pass, with its arduous ascent and unbounded view of mountain ranges, lakes, streams, and dark green valleys.

Valerie Coleman (b. 1970) is an American composer and flutist as well as the creator of the quintet Imani Winds. Coleman was named Performance Today’s 2020 Classical Woman of the year and was listed as “one of the Top 35 Women Composers” in The Washington Post. UMOJA was written for quintet in 2002, and an orchestral version, UMOJA Anthem for Unity, was commissioned and performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2019, marking the first time a living African American woman composer was commissioned by the orchestra.

A graduate of Mannes College of Music and a student of Julius Baker, Coleman is known for her many contributions to wind chamber music and has released several studio albums with Imani Winds, one of which was nominated for a Grammy® for Best Classical Crossover Album in 2005. Coleman’s compositions frequently combine diverse styles, such as jazz and classical music, often incorporating political or social themes. UMOJA was listed as one of the “Top 101 Great American Works” by Chamber Music America in 2002. Currently, Coleman is an assistant professor at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Kwanzaa is an African American celebration that takes place between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Today, we hope to send you out the door into a healthier future, celebrating a new beginning after the isolation of the pandemic.
