AIRCRAFT APPROVED? Members and readersshould note that the inclusion of all advertisements inthe commercial or classifi ed sections of this magazinedoes not necessarily mean that the product or serviceis approved by the LAA. In particular, aircraft types, orexamples of types advertised, may not, for a variety ofreasons, be of a type or standard that is eligible for theissue of a LAA Permit to Fly. You should not assumethat an aircraft type not currently on the LAA acceptedtype list will eventually be accepted.
IMPORTED AIRCRAFT? Due to unfavourableexperiences, the purchase and import of completedhomebuilt aircraft from abroad is especiallydiscouraged.
TIME TO BUILD? When evaluating kits/designs,it should borne in mind that technical details,performance fi gures and handling characteristics areoften quoted for a factory-produced aircraft fl yingunder ideal conditions. It is wise, therefore, to seekthe opinion of existing builders and owners of thetype. You should also take your own skill andcircumstances into consideration when calculatingbuild times. The manufacturer’s build time should betaken as a guide only.
AMATEUR BUILDING All LAA aircraft buildersand potential builders are reminded that in order toqualify for a LAA Permit to Fly, homebuilt aircraft mustbe genuinely amateur built. For these purposes theCAA provide a defi nition of amateur built in theirpublication CAP 659, available from LAA. An extractfrom CAP 659 reads “The building and operation of theaircraft will be solely for the education and recreationof the amateur builder. This means that he would notbe permitted to commission someone else to build hisaircraft”. An aircraft built outside the CAA’s defi nitioncould result in an expensive garden ornament.
