June 5th - 9th 6:00 - 9:00pm

Age 4 - 5th Grade

We are again offering a free meal to make it easier for parents to send kids to VBS right after work. Dinner will be served from 5:30-5:50 each night. The meal is only for children attending VBS. Our volunteers need an idea of how many to cook for each night, so we ask that you RSVP (816-452-5761) by 1:00pm each day, or if

you know in advance that your children will be there for the meal every night, go ahead and RSVP for the whole week!

Children will not be released to walk home without a parent. Parents must check their children in and out. ID bracelets will be placed on the children and matching tags for parents must be pre-

sented at end of the night to release your child to you.

VBS DevotionsVBS Devotions   William Tyndale, along with other reformers, was convinced that the Bible alone held the words of eternal life. The reformers views on salvation, which were contrary to the Roman Catholic Church's are summarized by the five solas:  Sola Scriptura (By Scripture alone) The bible is the supreme authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice in every area it touches on. We learn about salvation only through the pages of the bible.  Sola gratia (Grace alone) Salvation comes by the free grace of God. Man cannot‐‐and need not‐‐do any work to earn God's fa‐vor. Salvation is not based in any way upon human merit.  Solus Christus (Christ alone)  Christ is the only mediator between God and man. Thus an individual can go directly to God through Christ.  Sola fide (Faith alone) Faith in the Person of Christ is the instrumental means of salvation. The Roman Catholic church taught that, while initial grace was infused at baptism, the person had to cooperate with that grace until God had accepted him as righteous.  Soli Deo Gloria (For God's glory alone) Salvation is exclusively God's work, and so He alone is worthy to receive praise and thanksgiving. This sola expresses the highest motive for all the Christian's deeds‐‐the glory of God alone.  Only the Bible gives the complete way of salvation‐from the need for it (Adam's disobedience and subsequent punishment was passed to all men because all have sinned) to the provision for it (the last Adam came to redeem mankind from the curse of sin given in Genesis 3) Apart from the Bible, how can we determine what sin is? How can we determine that we need to be saved from it?  As we discuss the true account of salvation with the children, let's be careful to show them that we rely on Scripture to tell us the truth about the condition that we're in (For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God‐Romans 3:23) and how we can be rescued from it (For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.‐Ephesians 2:8‐9)  Thank you for continuing to pray for VBS!    Amanda Eichler   VBS Director

GGENERATIONENERATION 412 412 June Update   

This past month in Generation 412 has been great. The youth have been learning how to share the Gospel with those around them. We have looked at the Gospel through the entire story of 

Scripture. We have also seen what exactly the Gospel means to us now and in the future. Lastly, we looked at the Romans road and how we can use it to share the Gospel with those around us.  And now for an update on the Spaghetti fundraiser we did on May 21st. This was a fundraiser to help pay for camp this summer for the youth. There was a lot of hard work put into it and I want to recognize a few people. The youth did an awesome job in decorating, serving, and tear‐ing down everything! They all worked extremely hard and I am proud of them for that. The parents were awesome with helping and supporting them as well. Rhonda was so gracious to help throughout the process 

and cooked all of the sauce and prepared the other food items as well. I am so thankful for her help and support, as are the youth!  I also want to mention my wife Dani and all the hard work she put into it as well. She helped with decorating and also preparing the food with Rhonda. Jay also helped to get things ready the day of the lunch and helped to serve along with Scott. John was a big help also with serving and tearing down and cleaning up. He has been awesome to me and the youth in many, many ways. Thank you to everyone who came and helped to support the youth in this event. Your help meant a lot to all of us, and the youth most of all!

Let My Hands SpeakLet My Hands Speak �Drama. The folks at Merriam‐Webster define drama as “a state, situation, or series of events involving interesting or intense conflict of forces.” It’s a word 

that gets used a lot in modern times and we all can think of examples of situations that contain lots of drama. Pastor Scott has referenced that sometimes we can encounter that drama when we spend a lot of time with our brothers and sisters in Christ and we all know we can encounter it in family life. As a general rule, pro‐longed drama is not healthy for relationships, so how do we avoid it? I ran across a decent analysis of it from, of all people, Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots. He was discussing why he has fewer coaches on his staff than many NFL teams and this was his conclusion:  

“As long as everybody is busy, as long as everybody feels productive, they feel good about what they’re doing and they feel like they’re contributing. I think when people have lag time and…not 

enough to do, that leads to getting distracted and complaining or being less productive.”  His conclusion is that being busy and accomplishing things can keep away drama. That makes a lot of sense. So if being busy is a key to avoiding drama how should we as Christians keep busy? Not surprisingly, the Bible can shed light on that:       James very practically spells out one key way to be busy (and of even greater emphasis – what we should do to please God): Take care of those who need it. Now, how do we find those who need it? I have good news! There are exactly two places in the world where you will find hurting people or people in need: 1)  Inside the church. 2) Outside the church. So if you can find yourself either of those two places you should be able to find people that you can be busy serving! Recently, this is something that God has been repeatedly drawing to my attention. There are so many people in need that we should not ever run out of ways to stay busy in service of our Lord. The key is that we need to open our eyes and simply look for them. We cannot sit back and wait for needs to fall into our lap or onto our Facebook news feed if we want to be about the work that God has commanded us to do. (Believe it or not, many people only share the good things going on in life unless we really engage with them!) The more that I’ve been intentional about checking in with people recently, whether friends or co‐workers, the more struggles and pain I’ve found out are being dealt with all around me while I’ve been oblivi‐ous. It is very convicting to come to that realization and it pushes me to not let it continue.  Now, I do realize that there are things that we have to do in life, necessary things, that do hinder our ability to be about this important business at all times. So what should we do then? 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “pray constantly.”  Well there you go. Problem solved. You can avoid the idle hands that can lead to drama and dis‐cord very simply. Pray. It’s funny because I distinctly remember reading that verse when I was a kid and thinking “How could I ever come up with enough to pray about to pray all the time?!” I laugh now, because when I take the time to think about it, I never stop coming up with people or things that need prayer.

world” (James 1:27) 

I could continue on, but those two things should be enough to keep us busy for a while! If we are going to successfully do life together while we reach a hurting world, taking care of those in need and praying con‐stantly must be top priorities. There’s a song by the band, Disciple, called “Radical” that has a poignant refrain that I hope can be a daily reminder to us of what we need to be about:

A hymn's long journey A hymn's long journey The beloved hymn “How Great Thou Art” came together across many years and miles. In 1885, when Swed-

ish preacher Carl Boberg wrote a poem titled “O, Great God,” he probably never dreamed he’d hear it performed years later to an old Swedish tune. Or that a Russian version would impact Stuart Hine, an English missionary to Poland, several decades later. Hine penned his own English version, resulting in the now-familiar lyrics. From “the rolling thunder” echoing off the Carpathian Moun-tains, to the “woods and forest glades” of Romania, to powerful conversions to Christianity, Hine was inspired to craft each verse. Sometimes the Holy Spirit takes time to complete a work, and that journey is as important as the destination.

The origin of Father's Day The origin of Father's Day   One Sunday in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a sermon honoring mothers. Her mother had died some years before, so her father had raised her by himself. Dodd wondered why there wasn’t a day to honor fathers, so she arranged a tribute to her father at a church in Spokane, Washington. The date was June 19, 1910. Many people believe this was the beginning of Father’s Day.   Another account holds that a West Virginia church held a tribute service for fathers in 1908, following a mine explosion that killed 360 men. Regardless of which story is correct, President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to designate a special day to honor fathers. In 1924, he proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

“From that moment, many of his disciples turned back and no longer accompanied him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” 

 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:66‐69).  When the cost of truly following Christ is made clear, two things happen—just like happened in the above verses. One group—the ones tagging for the entertainment, ‘feel‐good,’ ‘what’s in it for me?’—hits the road out. Gone. The other group—the ones truly impacted by the glori‐ous grace of God which brings us salvation—while they may be somewhat bewildered, frightened, or even hesitant, responds like Pe‐ter, “We have nowhere else to go. You are the One, the Messiah, who speaks and teaches the truth.”  Now we all know that Peter lived on the rol‐lercoaster of getting it and not getting it. After Jesus had been crucified…after Peter had de‐nied knowing Jesus three times, he just went back to what he had known, fishing. It was at that point that Jesus found him and restored him: “Peter do you love me? (3 times)… grieved that he asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” (John 21:15‐17)  ‘Grieved,’ means distressed, cut‐to‐the‐heart. Our sin, when we face it honestly, will grieve us. I’m also convinced that situations in life grieve us. The loss of a long‐time friendship. The cutting remarks of a family member antagonistic to our faith. The rejection of the Gospel of Jesus amid an evangelis‐tic encounter. Grief. Grief and sorrow. Life sometimes hurts. There is also a sorrow of persecution. Like I just mentioned, there are friends and family and people we encounter who reject the Good News. Some will be outright antagonistic about it. When those people hold positions of power in our community, they could carry out another level of persecution…like what Daniel’s three friends ex‐perienced in the Old Testament.  In these times, our Lord never changes. He is there. His purpose will be done. I pray, that like Peter and those three guys, I have the courage, commitment, and character to admit that I am hurt and I need Jesus’ answer…no matter what He chooses to do. I want to be able to sing this new song from MercyMe called, “Even If,” with as much zeal and assurance in a time like that as I do when things are going smoothly…

TWELVE Practical Ways for Men to Impact Fatherless Kids 1.  Be a mentor to a boy without a father through Big Brother or some other agency 2.  Contact your local junior or senior high school to tutor a needy kid 3.  Teach Sunday School 4.  Adopt a child or be a Foster parent 5.  Meet one‐on‐one weekly, with a boy in your church or neighborhood who doesn’t have a father 

in the home 6.  Become a leader in Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts 7.  Coach Little League or some other sport 8.  Volunteer to work with needy kids in an inner city ministry 9.  Hire a potentially “at risk” kid for yard work or in your business 10.  Become active youth leaders in your local church or a parachurch organization 11.  Start a church‐based sports league that reaches out to needy kids in the community 12.  Lead a Bible study in a juvenile detention center or group home

Measuring upMeasuring up   

While hanging out with her father in his workshop, a preschooler tried to imitate him by using a tape measure. When she couldn’t quite reach the distance she wanted to measure between herself and an object, she moved the object closer to her!   No matter how much we try to finagle God’s rules, his standard of holiness won’t be moved. As sinful beings, we can’t reach that standard on our own. We’re stuck without Jesus’ grace. Thank God that he helps us measure up!  

You’ll never miss it You’ll never miss it Frustrated that income never covered expenses, a longtime church treasurer re-signed. Another member, who owned the town’s grain elevator, volunteered to take over with one stipulation: He wouldn’t submit a report for the first year. The puzzled board members agreed because they knew he was an honest man. After all, they trusted him to process their grain. By year’s end, the new treasurer gave a glowing report. The church’s building debt had been erased. Staff salaries had increased 15 percent. And the budget showed a healthy balance. When the shocked but delighted congregation asked for an explanation, the treasurer said, “Most of you bring your grain to my elevator. When I paid you, I simply withheld 10 percent on your behalf and gave it to the church in your name. You never missed it!” Imagine what we could do for God if we willingly returned the first tenth of his gifts back to him.

The best Father The best Father   Unlike an earthly prince, God didn’t take a high‐and‐mighty ti‐tle, notes 17th‐century British preacher Thomas Watson. In‐stead, God calls himself Father to encourage us to pray to him.   

But God isn’t just any father. Watson offers these reasons why God is “the best Father”:   

• He is the most ancient (Daniel 7:9).  • He is perfect (Matthew 5:48).  • He is the wisest (Romans 16:27).  • He is the most loving (Zephaniah 3:17; 1 John 4:16).  • He has unsearchable riches (Ephesians 3:8).  • He can reform his children (Acts 9:11).  • He never dies (1 Timothy 6:16; Revelation 1:8).
