They earned over 5000 blue PRIDE tickets by demonstrating positive behaviors in Personal Best, Respect, Trustworthiness, Responsibility and Active Listening. The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) committee set the 5000 ticket goal at the beginning of the year. To celebrate this accomplishment the PBIS committee organized a Dance Day on Friday, November 7 th . We played fun music seven times throughout the day over the school intercom so kids and staff could have a dance break. The play list included oldies and newbies. At 3:15 we all went to the hallway and danced the Electric Slide. Our lunchroom turned into a disco tech and everyone had a GREAT TIME! Now we are reaching for that next 5000 ticket mark so we can celebrate the kids’ behavioral success again.

WALKING SCHOOL BUS During the November PTA meeting a group

of individuals from the community came to speak about the possibility of a Walking School Bus at Cleveland. This provides a safe and fun way to enable groups of students to walk to school together. The purpose is to help children improve their physical, mental and emotional health by walking to school. The students are accompanied by trained adult volunteers. One adult leads the “bus” and the other follows. The bus follows a set route and timetable and may include several stops where additional children may join the route. It does take volunteers to get this started. If you are interested in finding out how you can help, please contact the main office at 558-2463.

STUDENTS WALKING TO SCHOOL AND STRANGER DANGER TIPSMany Cleveland students are walking without an adult to and from school. Having your

child walk to school and back is a wonderful way for them to get some exercise. For older kids, it’s a great way to teach independence and responsibility.

Any child who walks to school without an adult needs to be educated on the important safety rules. If your child is a walker, please read the tips below from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. You should begin reinforcing these safety tips as soon as your child is old enough to understand. Please make it a priority to talk with your child. Awareness of these safety tips can help children be less susceptible to stranger dangers.

• Travel with a friend, or better yet, a group of friends when riding your bike or walking to or from school or other destinations.

• NEVER approach a stranger’s vehicle. • If a stranger offers you a ride somewhere, say no, and run away. Define “stranger” to

a young child as anyone they don’t know. • If someone follows you on foot, get away as quickly as you can. Go to someone’s house

you know, or run to other people, or just run away. • If someone is following you in a car, turn around and go in the opposite direction or

take a path where a car would not go. • Never leave school or any other extracurricular activity or event with someone who

you don’t know or with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable. • If a stranger tells you that there is an emergency or that a family member is hurt or that

a pet has been in an accident, always check with your mom or dad or other trusted adults. This is a common trick used by many molesters or kidnappers.

• Help your child identify “safe houses” where they feel comfortable in knocking on their door at any time a situation warrants it. Examples would be homes of trusted neighbors or friends.

• Parents should not become lax about kids going to a friend’s home in a neighborhood, even if it is only a few doors away. Snatchings can happen in an instant; even under a parent’s watchful eye. Older youth should be instructed to call when they arrive at a friend’s home for peace of mind and as a good safety tip practice.

• Parents should be cautious about blatant use of a child’s name on a back pack or jacket. Children sometimes believe that a person can’t be a stranger if they know them by name, when the reality is that their name was easily readable on their attire.
