Tuesday February 3rd 2015, the NPRA and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) contacted Orbiton. Skjeggestad bridge, located near Holmestrand on the E18, Norway’s main highway, had collapsed due to a landslide.

No one was hurt, but due to the risk of further collapse, a large area was cordoned off and deemed unsafe to send in ground crews. Orbiton mobilised a two man team and flew one of its unmanned systems to conduct a detailed inspection of the structures. 14 flights were carried out and in record time Orbiton obtained large quantities of inspection and geo data for further analysis by NPRA and NVE engineers. Orbiton’s data was quickly uploaded to a central server and used at government level in the decision making process. It was determined that the bridge needed to be demolished as quickly as possible. Orbiton was then asked by the NPRA to deliver data to geologists and engineers as soon as the 2700 tonne structure was taken down. In addition, Orbiton was commissioned to provide infrared surveillance of the area prior to the demolitions. This enabled police and security crews to ensure that no unauthorized person had breached the security zone, an area with a 500 meter radius from the blast point.sprengningspunktet.

THE MISSION

DATA COLLECTION“DRONE DATA WAS AN INVALUABLE ASSET”

In just 36 hours Orbiton delivered inspection and geodata to geologists and engineers in the form of electro-op-tical RGB film and video, interactive spheres, orthophotos, digital elevation models, 3D models and validation reports.

The data provided by Orbiton helped to determine that the damaged bridge should be taken down as quickly as possible to avoid further, uncontrolled collapse and landslides.

Decommissioning was to be carried out with explosives in a complex operation, to avoid further landslides of quick clay. The bridge director in the NPRA stated that “drone data was an invaluable asset” in order to make quick, accurate decisions in a crisis situation.

RESULS

1. Validation reports showed that the 3D models generated from the drone had a planimetric accuracy of 1.5 cm.

2. The geo data supplied by Orbiton was used by both NPRA and NVE to extrapolate other information necessary to assess the condition of both the bridge and the surrounding terrain.
