As Calgary’s lead economic development agency, we work with businesses to facilitate and
expedite local, national and international business investment and trade development opportunities
and to promote sustainable economic growth in the Calgary region.
Calgary Economic Development is a corporation funded by The City of Calgary, private industry
and other levels of government and managed by an independent board of directors.
Key areas of focus and related initiatives
Calgary Economic Development promotes the Calgary Region as the location of choice for people
and business. Vision We are recognized as a key influencer in Calgary’s economy. Mission We
strategically influence the economic vitality and well-being of Calgary. Mandate To lead, facilitate
and advance Calgary’s economic development efforts.
Our services
Calgary Economic Development acts as a connector, bringing businesses, organizations, government and community together in projects and initiatives that benefit Calgary’s long-term economic well-being. Our goal is to assist businesses and the community at large to achieve greater results that will not only benefit their organizations but our city and region as a whole.
We do this by assisting businesses in the following areas:
Business retention and expansion
> Facilitate corporate site selection and real estate and development solutions
> Provide customized solutions for expanding businesses
> Facilitate film scouting, production and permitting services
Business investment and attraction
> Position Calgary as an ideal location to do business
> Assist companies in the development of a business case to invest in Calgary
> Provide orientation services for incoming companies
> Accelerate business results through introductions and business linkages
Trade development
> Support businesses with export development resources
> Provide programming and resources to assist companies in doing business globally
> Provide in-region contacts
> Assist clients in accessing markets through incoming and outgoing trade missions
Workforce development
> Support Calgary businesses with best practices in workforce retention and attraction
> Assist businesses with making connections to meet workforce needs
> Provide relevant labour market information for the attraction and retention of talent
> Support Calgary businesses with workforce attraction efforts
Research and information
> Provide regional economic and industry information
> Supply bi-annual state of the economy reports and an annual economic outlook
> Undertake sectoral and competitiveness research
> Provide access to business directories for sourcing products and services
The Alberta Creative Hub: The Alberta Creative Hub will provide much needed infrastructure and facilities to grow Calgary’s film, television and digital media industries and will enable collaboration, technological innovation, economic and cultural diversification and education for the creative industries. Transportation and Logistics Opportunity Study: To support growth of the Transportation and Logistics industry with the participation of industry leaders, a long-term growth strategy is being developed to promote Calgary’s role as Western Canada’s transportation hub.
3. Global Reach Global Business Centre for Southern Alberta: The Global Business Centre is a highly visible, easily accessible facility designed to increase international trade activity. The Global Business Centre will promote the development of new markets, coordinate incoming and outgoing trade missions and be the leader in presenting international business forums. Corporate and Community Engagement: The success of Calgary Economic Development is dependent on aligning interests across many stakeholders. Our Action Calgary partnership program is designed to do just that, by engaging the leadership and financial resources of corporate, community and government leaders to execute Calgary’s 10-year Economic Development Strategy.

WORKshift:WORKshift is a global leading initiative to promote, educate and accelerate the adoption of telework in the business community. WORKshift offers tools, best practices and resources to businesses in the Calgary region to assess and effectively implement telework programs. LiveinCalgary.com: An authoritative website with a comprehensive range of information about Calgary, valuable for both Calgarians and those considering a move to Calgary. It is an important toolkit for businesses attracting talent provincially, nationally and globally.
2. Business and Enterprise Global Energy Centre:Building upon the strengths of the hydrocarbon sector, the Global Energy Centre project will support Calgary’s goal to become the world’s leading centre for integrated energy activity and position Canada as a global clean energy superpower. Productivity Alberta: Promoting innovation and productivity improvement solutions to Calgary region businesses through the identification, development and implementation of programs, tools and educational experiences. Financial Services Investment Attraction: The creation of the Financial Sector Advisory Committee is a collaborative effort between Calgary Economic Development and key industry influencers that seeks to position Calgary as a global financial centre. An investment attraction strategy and market analysis is being developed in support of this effort.
