ABOUT OUR SERVICES

Contained within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Center for Geographical Studies provides technical and related support for faculty research programs and grants. The Center’s mission is to promote and foster the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology in education and research at California State University, Northridge and the larger Southern California community. We seek to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, students, and groups in the local community who can benefit from using geographical information and spatial analysis.

Housed in the Department of Geography, Center personnel enjoy access to two GIS laboratories completely dedicated to Center use, as well as the Department’s fully-functional GIS and cartography laboratories. These labs offer an extensive selection of current software applications for GIS, image analysis, digital cartography, statistical measures, graphic design, and desktop publishing.

data creation, collection and processingHave a plan for a GIS project, but need data, equipment, or staff? We can collect data, create a well-organized spatial database, and process data to meet your project goals. Our expertise lies in spatial and relational database management, GPS surveys, orthorectification, digitizing and more!

GIS data analysis & map productionNeed GIS data analyzed and/or visualized, but require technical assistance with methodology? We can take your data and/or ours and perform technical analysis to provide the insight needed for successful projects and decision making. The Center’s faculty and staff have years of training and experience in the analysis of spatial data, map production, graphic design and geovisualization.

expert trainingAre you developing GIS at your school or company and need expert training? We can provide you with a series of introductory training courses in GIS or create a customized training program to suit the needs of your organization.

expert consultationNeed advice on how to implement GIS or how GIS might be used to the best advantage? Our expert staff and faculty can consult with you to help you successfully develop your GIS and even implement your project from beginning to end.

Center personnel also have access to networked storage and spatial data servers as well as workgroup laser printers and large-format scanners and plotters. In addition to our GIS/Cartography labs, we also have a full suite of field equipment including several high-end GPS units to suit your surveying needs.

Our goals are to...•Foster geospatial research within the university and the Southern California region.

•Provide geospatial technical services to the regional community.

•Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, students, and groups in the local community who can benefit from using geospatial technology.

•Provide real-world work experience opportunities for students allowing for the development of critical workplace competencies.

HIGHLIGHTED PROJECTS

Water ResourcesBasin Plan ProjectComprehensive services were provided to create GIS layers and associated attribution of regional and statewide water quality standards. A complex relational database was developed in Oracle, and utilized ESRI’s ArcSDE product in conjunction with custom web-based user interfaces to organize and manage the information. Client: State Water Resources Control Board

National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Updates Updated the NHD using various methodologies such as conflation and editing, and developed mapping standards and business rules. Client: U.S. Geological Survey

Wetland Status and TrendsCollaborated with Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) to develop a methodology to assess the change in extent, distribution and type of wetlands in the state of California. Client: The California Wetlands Monitoring Workgroup with funding from the United States Environmental Protection Agency

Municipal GISLA Water Course PermitsDeveloped a geospatial dataset of watercourse permits in the City of Los Angeles from scanned and georeferenced maps. Client: City of Los Angeles

Newhall County Water District Landscape MappingDigitized and classified land cover types in landscaped areas of all single family residential parcels to create more equitable water rates for residents. Client: Newhall Water District

InfrastructureCaltrans Public RoadsDevelop and modify existing transportation data to update Caltrans’ Linear Referencing System (LRS) for all public roads in Southern California. This data is part of a coordinated statewide LRS roads layer that also satisfies federal reporting requirements. Client: Caltrans

Broadband TestingProvide wireless field verification testing in Southern California to assess the capacity of the California Broadband network in consultation with the Geographical Information Center (GIC) at CSU Chico. Client: California Public Utilities Commission

Historical EcologySynthesize diverse historical data (maps, photographs, textual accounts, etc.) to enhance understanding of the ecological, hydrological, and geomorphic conditions of a particular region prior to major Euro-American modification. Generate illustrated technical reports describing historical conditions and discussing implications for management and restoration. Previous study areas include: Tijuana Estuary, Ballona Creek, San Diego Lagoons, San Gabriel River, and the Ventura River. Clients: Various
